Family Of Origin Stress, Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms, And Resource Loss For Couples During Covid-19: A Longitudinal Analysis, Betsy Hughes Barrow
Family Of Origin Stress, Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms, And Resource Loss For Couples During Covid-19: A Longitudinal Analysis, Betsy Hughes Barrow
Theses and Dissertations
The pandemic affected daily life on an unprecedented global scale resulting in the need for adaptation and flexibility to cope with ongoing stress, uncertainty, and loss that may affect couple relationships. Understanding resource loss in the context of mass stress events is critical because resource loss has been defined as the primary agent of stress (Hobfoll, 1989). As such, it is important to understand what factors may have shaped the degree of resource loss incurred during the pandemic. Extant research implies that considering early life adversity may be useful to explore as it may be a form of resource loss …
Exploration Of The Impact Of Gender-Affirming Care And Social Support On Executive Functioning And Mental Health In Gender-Diverse Autistic And Non-Autistic Adults, Karys Michaela Normansell-Mossa
Exploration Of The Impact Of Gender-Affirming Care And Social Support On Executive Functioning And Mental Health In Gender-Diverse Autistic And Non-Autistic Adults, Karys Michaela Normansell-Mossa
Theses and Dissertations
Between 4.8% and 26% of adults presenting to gender dysphoria clinics have an autism diagnosis. Both autistic people and gender-diverse people have higher rates of mental health conditions including anxiety and depression and more difficulties with executive functioning, all of which impact quality of life. Some work suggests that gender affirmation leads to better mental health outcomes, including better executive functioning, but this has not been studied directly in autistic adults who identify as gender-diverse or transgender. As such, we elected to explore the relationships among these variables at this intersection of gender diversity and autism. In a sample of …

Mental Health Literacy In Polynesian Native Hawaiians And Other Pacific Islanders: A Pilot Cross-Sectional Study, Kealoha Sarah Reiko Snow
Theses and Dissertations
Background: High prevalence of mental health problems and underutilization of mental health treatment are more severe among the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (NHPI) population and remain misunderstood and understudied. Examining mental health literacy (MHL)–the knowledge and beliefs about mental disorders which aid their recognition, management, or prevention–has been shown to identify barriers to seeking and receiving care. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the level of MHL in Polynesian NHPIs and identify associated demographic variables. Methods: Data for this pilot cross-sectional study were collected from 298 US Polynesians via an online questionnaire of the Mental Health Literacy Scale …
Silver Sagebrush (Artemisia Cana) Survival And Regrowth After Fire In The Mixed Grass Prairie, Marcus A. Comfort, Eric G. Lamb
Silver Sagebrush (Artemisia Cana) Survival And Regrowth After Fire In The Mixed Grass Prairie, Marcus A. Comfort, Eric G. Lamb
Western North American Naturalist
Silver sagebrush (Artemisia cana) is a low shrub species that is common in northern mixed grass prairies and that provides important wildlife habitat. Silver sagebrush habitat has historically experienced frequent wildfires, but postsettlement fire control efforts have reduced fire frequencies. The effects of fire on silver sagebrush growth and regeneration are not clearly understood; this study examined the effects of fire on silver sagebrush regeneration by evaluating postfire plant size and distribution data from one season. Sites were located in the northern mixed prairie in Saskatchewan, Canada, and included pastures where the plant community was recovering from both …

Nest Success By A Female Black-Chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus Alexandri) With Male-Like Plumage, Cooper M. Farr, John Middleton
Western North American Naturalist
Female-limited polymorphism, a phenomenon in which female animals can exhibit male-like coloration, is known to occur in approximately 25% of hummingbird species, but it has not previously been recognized in Black-chinned Hummingbirds (Archilochus alexandri). Between May and July 2021, we documented a Black-chinned Hummingbird with male plumage features that built a nest, incubated eggs, and successfully fledged 2 chicks in Salt Lake City, Utah. The bird’s gorget feathers, including the chin and upper throat, were predominantly dark with a small number of white feathers interspersed. Because the bird participated in nest building, presumed egg production, and incubation—behaviors not …

First Line Acne Treatment: Comparison Of Cost And Efficacy, Michael P. Mcneil, Karlen E. Luthy, Christine R. Platt, Michael S. Robinson, Janelle L.B. Macintosh
Student Works
Acne vulgaris is a common skin concern that may cause permanent disfiguration and encumbering effects on self-esteem and mental health. Additionally, it is often associated with expensive treatment costs for patients. When selecting the most appropriate therapeutic approach, nurse practitioners must also consider the price of the medication. For the majority of mild to moderate cases of acne (both comedonal and inflammatory), effective first-line treatment recommendations include a combination of a topical retinoid, benzoyl peroxide, and a topical antibiotic such as clindamycin. Generic and compounded medications are typically more cost-effective for patients than brand name formulations.
Ebi2 Knockdown And Effects On B-Cell Migration, Jordan Mabey, Dr. Brian Poole
Ebi2 Knockdown And Effects On B-Cell Migration, Jordan Mabey, Dr. Brian Poole
Journal of Undergraduate Research
B cells are specialized cells which participate in the normal immune response to an infection. As B cells encounter antigens in the body, they become activated and travel to what is known as a B cell follicle within a lymph node. At the outer follicle B cells combine with T cells and move to the inner follicle to become specialized immunity participating cells. Normally upon reaching the outer follicle, the B cell up-regulates Epstein-Barr virus induced molecule-2 (EBI2) which causes it to pause until the cell can complex with the proper T cell. Once this connection between the two cells …

Improving Restoration Success Of Winterfat: Influences Of Hydrophobic Seed Coatings And Planting Depth On Seedling Emergence, Kyle Andrew Cook
Improving Restoration Success Of Winterfat: Influences Of Hydrophobic Seed Coatings And Planting Depth On Seedling Emergence, Kyle Andrew Cook
Theses and Dissertations
In western North America, winterfat (Krascheninnikovia lanata (Pursh) A. Meeuse & Smit) is a valuable protein-rich subshrub whose restoration has been limited by poor seed flowability and low rates of seedling establishment. Seed flowability can be limited by a dense covering of hairs on winterfat fruits that can cause them to clog in mechanized equipment. Seedling establishment can be limited by premature germination of fall-sown seeds that can cause over-winter seedling mortality from freezing, pathogen attack, and winter drought. Seed coatings may provide a way to overcome both of these barriers to winterfat restoration. Coatings can compress hairs against the …

Shortening Remediation Time In A University Excel Course Through Custom, Automated Feedback, Kainalu Barino
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
This project aimed to implement an automated feedback tool for students taking IS 110. Implementing a feedback tool was identified by a previous research group as one of the best ways to shorten remediation time (Colby, 2018, p. 1). They chose a design for their feedback tool that resulted in faster turn-around times and better scores on assignments, but their design did not improve test results by a significant margin. Our project redesigned the feedback tool in the hope that it not only maintains the benefits of the previous tool, but achieves long term learning results as well.
Evaluating Effects Of Urban Growth Within The Greater Salt Lake Area On Local Meteorological Conditions Using Urban Canopy Modeling, Corey L. Smithson
Evaluating Effects Of Urban Growth Within The Greater Salt Lake Area On Local Meteorological Conditions Using Urban Canopy Modeling, Corey L. Smithson
Theses and Dissertations
The increasing urbanization of the greater Salt Lake City area (GSLA) has contributed to the development of an urban canopy over this area. This canopy refers to the effects of building profiles, varying land surface properties and anthropogenic heating on local meteorological conditions including temperature, humidity, and wind velocity. Urban Canopy Models (UCMs) can be used to represent these characteristics on a mesoscale without needing to develop models accounting for effects of individual buildings. One method used to classify urban areas are Local Climate Zones (LCZs), which assign different properties to different types of urban areas. A baseline model that …

Semantic Memory And Decision-Making: An Fmri Study Regarding Covid-19 Vaccine Misinformation, Morgan Chase
Undergraduate Honors Theses
With the continued use and prevalence of social media, misinformation is likewise becoming more prevalent. Information about the COVID-19 pandemic was an example of the way misinformation spreads and presents challenges to society through polarization and discord. As people made decisions regarding whether to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, misinformation may have impacted their decision making. The goal of this study was to understand how misinformation and corrections to misinformation differentially activate the brain, in contrast to how correct information activates the brain, and how misinformation impacts decision making.

Experiential learning programs, such as service learning, help students in Spanish medical interpreting classes to increase their interpreting proficiency, which includes their cultural understanding, linguistic performance, and professionalization (Rudvin & Tomassini, 2011). Currently, the Spanish Medical Interpretation class at Brigham Young University uses a community service-learning project in which students volunteer six hours of their time interpreting within the community. While largely beneficial, not all community partners offer the same learning opportunities. Some include training and shadowing programs, while others do not. This thesis seeks to determine the impact that shadowing opportunities and community partnerships have on interpreting proficiency and …
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Motivational Speeches In Sports Films, Brenna Seeman
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Motivational Speeches In Sports Films, Brenna Seeman
Theses and Dissertations
This paper applies Aristotle's historic modes of persuasion, namely ethos, logos, and pathos, to the motivational speeches found in 20 popular sports films. Through this analysis, major themes concerning how coaches utilized persuasive tactics were found and used to compile a list of important characteristics of motivational speeches. This initial analysis found pathos to be the most effective form of persuasion among motivational speeches in sports films. Because of this finding, a deeper analysis took place with five of the speeches, focusing specifically on how the visual, sound and other thematic elements contributed to the overall pathos of those rhetorical …

The Effects And Reversibility Of Combination Inhaled Corticosteroids On Phonation Threshold Pressure (Ptp) And Phonation Threshold Flow (Ptf) In Ex Vivo Rabbit Larynges, Melanie Elizabeth Blauer
Theses and Dissertations
Although combination inhaled corticosteroids (ICs) are known to cause voice disorders in otherwise vocally healthy individuals, it is unknown whether those adverse effects can be reversed by the cessation of treatment. Quantitative aerodynamic measures such as phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and phonation threshold flow (PTF) can be used to identify the development of, and recovery from, vocal pathologies. We examined the effects and reversibility of ICs on laryngeal aerodynamics. This study was a mid-project investigation as part of a larger ongoing project. The 18 larynges were from rabbits that received ICs, a control condition, or no treatment. Experimental group rabbits …

Non-Tuberculous Mycobacterium Correlation With Geochemical Characteristics Of Soil And Basalt In Hawaii, Leeza Marie Wells
Theses and Dissertations
Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) cause opportunistic lung disease though environmental exposure pathways. Among the United States, Hawaii has a significantly higher infection rate. Preliminary studies have shown certain environmental factors, such as phosphorus and other select soil geochemical characteristics, to be statistically significant to NTM occurrence. However, a model to predict NTM occurrence based on soil geochemistry had yet to be attempted. A selection of 40 NTM positive and 40 NTM negative soils from Oahu were selected for a geochemical analysis to search for possible correlations to mineralogy and elemental abundances that may promote, or inhibit, NTM growth in the environment. …

Women, Divorce, Tobacco, And Outplacements Of Children: Uncovering Family Secrets In Switzerland, Tito Craige
Swiss American Historical Society Review
From early in the nineteenth century until the 1950s, tens of thousands of Swiss children were taken from their homes and placed with foster families or sold at auction. The mothers of the outplaced children were usually poor and divorced; some were alleged to be prostitutes. One of these mothers was the author’s great-grandmother, Dorothea Hürlimann. In 1895, because she was divorced and managed a tobacco store in Geneva’s red-light district, her three children were sent to live with foster families. The middle child, Dora, was four years old when she was placed with a family in Winterthur and began …

Theses and Dissertations
Rationale: The severity of insomnia symptoms, including difficulty falling asleep and returning to sleep when awakened in the night, are major risk factors for more severe suicidality including suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and death by suicide. As a modifiable risk factor, insomnia is a potential target for suicide prevention. There are several commonly observed gaps in the literature studying the association between insomnia and suicidality including little exploration of potential mediators, limited assessments of insomnia and suicidality, and a lack of sample diversity and representativeness. As such, the models that explain the association between insomnia and suicidality remain unclear and …
