A Q-Sort Comparison Between Cultural Expectations Of Chinese And Cultural Perceptions Of Returned Latter-Day Saint Missionaries From The United States Who Had Been Assigned To Chinese Missions, Gary G. Y. Chu
Theses and Dissertations
This project was designed to generate information relative to a specific intercultural communication situation, especially directed toward diversity between cultural expectation and performance in the following areas: first, Chinese expectation of American Latter-day Saint missionaries' performance in Chinese contexts; and second, performance of the missionaries, as reflected by their knowledge of proper conduct in Chinese contexts at the end of their missions.
Using Q-card sorting procedures and t-test analysis, an analytically developed instrument consisting of seventy statements grouped in six behavior categories was applied in the specific areas. Twenty-nine of the seventy statements showed significant diversity. Four of the hypothesized …

A Documentary History Of The Lord's Way Of Watching Over The Church By The Priesthood Through The Ages, Rex A. Anderson
A Documentary History Of The Lord's Way Of Watching Over The Church By The Priesthood Through The Ages, Rex A. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Since the days of Adam the Lord has called upon the priesthood to watch over the families: To see that fathers are doing their duty as patriarchs over their families, and to assist and encourage the fathers in this responsibility. Thus thwarting the efforts of Satan to lead the children of men astray. The principle has always been for the priesthood to watch over the families. But the process of how this is done has changed from time to time according to the needs of the people. This treatise covers the history of these changes in documentary form.

The Mormon Role In Irrigation Beginnings And Diffusions In The Western States: An Historical Geography, Kelly C. Harper
The Mormon Role In Irrigation Beginnings And Diffusions In The Western States: An Historical Geography, Kelly C. Harper
Theses and Dissertations
Irrigation has played an important part in the development of the Western States. Its beginnings have often been associated with the Mormon settlement in Utah. However, irrigation had its inception in the West long before the Mormons came to the Great Basin in 1847. The spatial extent of irrigation before this date included limited acreage in nearly every Western State.
Before their arrival in the Great Basin the Mormons had become acquainted with irrigation methods. Knowledge of irrigation had diffused to them primarily from the Spanish in the Southwest. Thus, they were well prepared to begin their irrigation enterprises in …

Kelsey, Texas: The Founding And Development Of A Latter-Day Saint Gathering Place In Texas, James Clyde Vandygriff
Theses and Dissertations
Kelsey, Texas, was a flourishing Latter-day Saint colony for more than a quarter of a century, beginning at a time when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was encouraging its converts to stay in the mission field. Kelsey was an attempt by the Church to provide Latter-day Saints from the southern states a safe haven from persecution which existed in the South, while leaving them in a geographic area in which they could be comfortable.
The growth and success for many years of the Kelsey Academy was the result of an interesting partnership, not always tranquil, between the …

Ecology Of Sceloporus Magister At The Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, Wilmer W. Tanner, John E. Krogh
Great Basin Naturalist
The natural history of Sceloporus magister was studied in populations at the Nevada Test Site, Mercury. Individuals were marked and kept under surveillance from 1965 through 1970. Reproductive cycles were examined by field observation and by autopsy. Hatchlings appear in the population in July and August. Growth is rapid for the first year. Sexual maturity is reached before the second hibernation or soon after emergence from it. Territoriality is a pronounced behaviorism; individuals have been observed to remain in a small area for several years. Food consists of arthropods, with ants the predominant item. Reproduction occurs during May and/or June …

I. An Isothermal Titration Microcalorimeter. Ii. Importance Of Micronutrients In Nutrition. Iii. Zinc Bibliography, John Willard Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
I. An isothermal titration microcalorimeter having a colume of 4 ml and capable of temerature control to ±2 x 10-5°C is described. Major components include a constant temperature water bath controlled to ±3 x 10-4°C, a platinum reation vessel, and an isothermal control circuit consisting of constant Peltier thermoelectric cooling and variable Joule heating controlled by a thermistor in an AC Wheatstone bridge circuit. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and was found to produce data accurate to ± 0.1% where small samples are used such as in the investigation of many biological systems.

Helminth Parasites Of Dogs In Two Central Utah Communities, Lari Michael Norton Cowgill
Theses and Dissertations
Parasitic helminths probably consitute one of the most important groups of disease agents in dogs. In the Southern and Central United States dogs are often fatally infected with the canine esophageal worm, Spirocerca lupi, and the ca nine heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis. Cestodes which can limit the growth of a dog are found throughout the United States.
Fate And Metabolism Of Bas 290-H In A Model Ecosystem, Kuo-Mei Chang
Fate And Metabolism Of Bas 290-H In A Model Ecosystem, Kuo-Mei Chang
Theses and Dissertations
The use of chemicals to control economic pests has grown in this century both in the amount and the diversity of materials used (Headley and Lewis, 1967). About ten billion pounds of pesticides have been used in the United States since 1945. It is estimated that there are 340 million acres of cultivated lands in the Continental United States. Of this amount, approximately 119 million acres were sprayed with herbicides, 97 million acres were treated with insecticides and 25 million acres were treated with fungicides and other minor pesticides (Matsumura, 1972).
Interaction Between Triiodothyronine (T₃) And Thyroxine (T₄) In The Chick And The Rat, Kurtis George Cornish
Interaction Between Triiodothyronine (T₃) And Thyroxine (T₄) In The Chick And The Rat, Kurtis George Cornish
Theses and Dissertations
The secretion of two hormones with identical function by the thyroid gland has been questioned, What is the relationship between these two hormones? Why does the thyroid secrete two hormones when either one can provide for all the activity of the thyroid (Greer, 1972). Little work has been done on the relationship between the two hormones. There is some evidence showing that thyroxine (T4) is deiodinated to triiouothyronine (T3) at the tissue level in mammals. Chambers (1970) found that there was a negative interaction between T4 and T3 when pharmacologic doses were administered to the rat. The present study was …

Effects Of A Nuclear Detonation On Arthropods At The Nevada Test Site, Dorald M. Allred
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
Fifty-three arthropod species were studied in an area affected by an underground nuclear detonation. These were represented by 10 species of ants, 17 beetles, 5 orthopterans, 4 scorpions, 6 solpugids, and 11 spiders (Table 16). Relative populations were determined prior to the detonation and at three periods after the detonation–(1) one and two months after (August and September 1962), (2) 11 months after (June 1963), and (3) 13 months after (August 1963). One and two months after the detonation, the number of species was reduced from the expected by 48 percent, by 52 percent after 11 months, and by 66 …

An Ecological Survey Of The Algae Of Huntington Canyon, Utah, Lorin E. Squires, Samuel R. Rushforth, Carol J. Endsley
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
A quantitative and ecological study of the algae of Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, was conducted from March 1971 to April 1972. Net plankton, nannoplankton, periphyton, and visible attached algae were studied. Certain physical and chemical parameters in the waters of Huntington Creek and a small pond along its course were also measured.
Huntington Creek contains a wide diversity of genera and species of algae. Diatoms are the main constituent of the flora of this stream throughout the year. Hydrurus foetidus is prevalent in Huntington Creek from late winter to early summer, and filamentous blue green algae abound in the …

The Peregrine Falcon In Utah, Emphasizing Ecology And Competition With The Prairie Falcon, Richard D. Porter, Clayton M. White
The Peregrine Falcon In Utah, Emphasizing Ecology And Competition With The Prairie Falcon, Richard D. Porter, Clayton M. White
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
This study was undertaken to record the known history of the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) in Utah as we have been able to construct it from both the literature and from our original research that extends over about a 30-year period in the state. The present total population of the peregrine in Utah is possibly only 10 percent of what it has been in historic times. In an effort to find explanations for the decline, we have explored hypotheses of climatic changes, impact of pesticides, disease, and human disturbances. We conclude that pesticide contamination and climatic changes may …

Breeding Ecology Of Raptors In The Eastern Great Basin Of Utah, Dwight G. Smith, Joseph R. Murphy
Breeding Ecology Of Raptors In The Eastern Great Basin Of Utah, Dwight G. Smith, Joseph R. Murphy
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
A comparative study of the breeding ecology of 12 raptor species was conducted in the eastern Great Basin from 1967-1970. The project was designed to determine the composition and densities, habitat selection, territoriality and predatory habits of raptorial birds in a semiarid environment. All topics were analyzed comparatively, relating the requirements and activities of the 12 raptor species.
Average yearly population densities of all species approximated 0.5 pairs per square mile, but much of the available habitat was not utilized. Predominant raptors were the Ferruginous Hawk and Great Horned Owl. Other important raptors included the Golden Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk and …

Ulrich Braker, The Life Story And Real Adventures Of The Poor Man Of Toggenburg, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Have you not sometimes wished to know in some detail how your (Swiss} ancestors, say of the 18th century, have lived, what kind of daily or unusual troubles they have faced, and what hopes and fears have sustained them? Derek Bowman's translation of t he autobiography of the "Poor Man of Toggenburg" makes just such a portrait available to American readers. It was painted by a writer who was unusual less in his external life-path than in his clarity of vision and in his power of description.
