Potential Use Of Great Salt Lake Water For Lobster Culture, Roger W. Mickelsen, Richard A. Heckmann, Rex C. Infanger Sep 1979

Potential Use Of Great Salt Lake Water For Lobster Culture, Roger W. Mickelsen, Richard A. Heckmann, Rex C. Infanger

Great Basin Naturalist

Three experiments were conducted to determine if water from the Great Salt Lake altered in chemical composition and dilution can be used successfully to sustain a species of hermit crab Pagarus sp. and the American Lobster (Homarus americanus). Great Salt Lake water altered by freshwater dilution will not sustain the hermit crab or the American lobster. Great Salt Lake water can be altered chemically by dilution to support growth of the American lobster.

American lobsters maintained in Instant Ocean synthetic sea water (control) grow at a more rapid rate than animals sustained in altered Great Salt Lake water. …

Chemical Composition Of Some Important Plants Of Southeastern Utah Summer Ranges Related To Mule Deer Reproduction, Jordan C. Pederson, K. T. Harper Jun 1979

Chemical Composition Of Some Important Plants Of Southeastern Utah Summer Ranges Related To Mule Deer Reproduction, Jordan C. Pederson, K. T. Harper

Great Basin Naturalist

Chemical composition of some major forage plants of mountain summer ranges of southeastern Utah is reported. Grasses are shown to contain significantly less nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium than either forbs or shrubs. Forbs and shrubs are demonstrated to differ significantly only in potassium content; forbs tested contained more potassium than shrubs. The chemical composition of the forage plants is discussed in relation to mule deer reproductive rates. It is concluded that protein and mineral content of the forage of the two ranges considered (the LaSal and Henry mountains) is less likely to affect reproductive rates than is the …

Ants From Northern Arizona And Southern Utah, Dorald M. Allred, Arthur C. Cole Mar 1979

Ants From Northern Arizona And Southern Utah, Dorald M. Allred, Arthur C. Cole

Great Basin Naturalist

Ants of 22 species were collected in can pit-traps from 16 different vegetative associations to determine distribution, seasonal and annual occurrence, and population as bases for monitoring environmental impact. Thirteen species were sufficiently abundant and distributed to qualify as indicator species. Myrmecocystus mexicanus was the most widespread ecologically. Pogonomyrmex occidentalis was the most abundant species, but second in ecological distribution. The greatest number of species was found in the juniper-Ephedra-grass association, and the fewest species in Ephredra-Coleogyne-Grayia.

Beetles From The Environs Of Lake Powell In Southern Utah And Northern Arizona, Dorald M. Allred, Vasco M. Tanner

Great Basin Naturalist

Sixty-eight species of beetles of 14 families were collected in pit traps in 12 major vegetative communities during environmental monitoring studies in the summers of 1971 to 1973 in southern Utah and northern Arizona. Seasonal and plant community differences and correlations in population and composition were noted for the 16 sites studied. Highest populations and the most species were found in a grass community, but occurred in different months in each of the three years. Lowest populations were found in a Coleogyne community, and fewest species in an Artemisia-grass community.

Representative Mormon Short Stories 1890 To 1940: Evolution Of Sentimentalism Toward Realism, Alice Gardner Jan 1979

Representative Mormon Short Stories 1890 To 1940: Evolution Of Sentimentalism Toward Realism, Alice Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Previously, no one has analyzed the short stories of Mormon periodicals from their inception in the late nineteenth century until 1940. The body of this study attempts to do so and has two main aims.

First, it evaluates the literary development of largely sentimental stories written for Mormon youth. Sentimentality in fiction was an extreme form of romanticism which flourished in America throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. As other forms of realistic writing became more acceptable in the nation, Mormon writers gradually accommodated their literary styles to conform with national trends. They retained a significant amount …

The Child's Sex And Birth Ordinal Position: Its Effects Upon Fathers' Interaction With Their Natural Five-Year-Old Children In A Selected Provo Utah Mormon Sample, D. Wayne Brown Jr. Jan 1979

The Child's Sex And Birth Ordinal Position: Its Effects Upon Fathers' Interaction With Their Natural Five-Year-Old Children In A Selected Provo Utah Mormon Sample, D. Wayne Brown Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Thirty-nine fathers were observed to determine if they interact differently with their child as a result of the child's sex or birth ordinal position.

Results indicated that fathers expected more of their sons, had a higher readiness of explanation for them, and criticized them more often. Fathers gave more praise, physical contact and supportive behavior to their daughters. Birth ordinal effects paralleled and interacted wiith the child's sex.

Stepwise regression yielded a mean value of 44.16 in explaining the overall variance in dependent variables. It emphasized the number of hours the father spent with his child and family, the father's …

Collection localities include Crowley County, Colorado, and Bernalillo, Chaves, and Valencia counties in New Mexico. A key to the species of ♂ Meringis is given.

Effect Of Irrigation On Survival Of Third-Stage Haemonchus Contortus Larvae (Nematoda: Trichostrongylidae), Graham R. Bullick, Ferron L. Andersen Dec 1978

Effect Of Irrigation On Survival Of Third-Stage Haemonchus Contortus Larvae (Nematoda: Trichostrongylidae), Graham R. Bullick, Ferron L. Andersen

Great Basin Naturalist

During May through October 1976, samples of sheep pellets containing laboratory-reared, thirdstage Haemonchus contortus larvae were placed on irrigated and nonirrigated pasture plots at Provo, Utah. Periodically thereafter, grass clippings, soil scrapings, and remaining pellets were collected and baermannized to determine their comparative survival from the two environments. Water was added to the irrigated plots in accordance with a weekly sprinkling regime designed to furnish sufficient moisture to maintain pasture grass in this semiarid region. Meteorologic measurements were collected daily from both irrigated and nonirrigated sections. During the year the nonirrigated section received a total of 131 mm of precipitation, …

The Effects Of Radiation From Uranium Mill Tailings On Tradescantia, E. A. Rechel, W. F. Campbell Dec 1978

The Effects Of Radiation From Uranium Mill Tailings On Tradescantia, E. A. Rechel, W. F. Campbell

Great Basin Naturalist

To assess the potential hazard from radioactive wastes, a plant with known radiosensitivity, Tradescantia clone 02, was grown in radioactive soil obtained from uranium mill tailings. The levels of radiation on these tailings varied from 0.03mR/hr (background) to a maximum of 3.00 mR/hr. Tradescantia grown in soil with a radiation level greater than 0.10 mR/hr evidenced significantly reduced reproductive integrity and fecundity, as measured by the number of stunted hairs per stamen, pollen viability, and numbers of somatic mutations. Based on these data, the radioactivity from uranium mill tailings has the potential to alter normal plant succession due to its …
