The Baby Catcher, Caroline P. M. West Jan 1985

The Baby Catcher, Caroline P. M. West

Inscape

The dream recurred always with a colorless sky. Featherless birds, huge and reptilian, flew wheeling, maddeningly slow, low over the gravelly, eroded bluffs at the mouth of the canyon. Each bird's craw was crammed full, bulging with something, like a stork's bill full of fish. Whenever one cawed, a bundle fell. Roughly swathed in strips of chalky white gauze or linen, the bundles plummeted like stones toward the highway ad the rushing shallow river. It was her job to catch the bundles.

The Jens Nyholm Papers, William K. Beatty

The Bridge

The Chicago area has benefited from the careers of two Danes who had the same first name but completely different occupations: the one indoors and the other out. Both men were alike in having achieved national reputations in their chosen fields. Jens Nyholm served for 24 years as a university librarian; Jens Jensen devoted many years to working with nature in the designing of private and public landscapes in the Midwest. Northwestern University has enjoyed, and still enjoys, the fruits of the labors of both these men for it was at this institution that Nyholm devoted over two decades of …

Ii. My Life, Maurice E. Perret

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In a high valley of the Jura Mountains, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchatel, is the center of watchmaking. It is the city where I was born, 19 May 1911. My passion for travel, geography, history, railroads, maps, is inherited. Among the family papers on my father's side I found a little yellow book titled "Expenses during the travel in Italy" and dated 1799. It contains the schedule of the stagecoaches between cities in Italy and among the expenses are purchases of one map of the Cisalpine Republic, another map and the History of Rome by the Latin historian Polybius. My …

Hip Glands In A Natural Population Of Montane Voles (Microtus Montanus), Craig R. Groves, Barry L. Keller Jul 1984

Hip Glands In A Natural Population Of Montane Voles (Microtus Montanus), Craig R. Groves, Barry L. Keller

Great Basin Naturalist

We recorded the occurrence of hip glands in a population of montane voles (Microtus montanus) in southeastern Idaho. Sexual maturity was positively associated with the presence of hip glands in both males and females. Significantly more males than females possessed hip glands. Males and females with hip glands were significantly heavier than individuals without glands. The possible function of hip glands in scent marking, aggression, and population fluctuations is discussed.

Mule Deer Passage Beneath An Overland Coal Conveyer, Charles L. Greenwood, Larry B. Dalton Jul 1984

Mule Deer Passage Beneath An Overland Coal Conveyer, Charles L. Greenwood, Larry B. Dalton

Great Basin Naturalist

Presently, information pertaining to migration and daily movement patterns of big game in relation to overland conveyors or large diameter pipelines is sparse. A literature review showed that moose (Alces alces), caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti), reindeer, and dall sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) will pass beneath or over large diameter pipeline systems. But no information was found relative to big game crossing coal conveyor systems. Mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) passage beneath an overland coal conveyor in Carbon County, Utah, was studied during spring 1981. Deer avoided crossing at underpass opportunities where the clearance …

Ecological Studies Of A Regulated Stream: Huntington River, Emery County, Utah, Robert N. Winget Apr 1984

Ecological Studies Of A Regulated Stream: Huntington River, Emery County, Utah, Robert N. Winget

Great Basin Naturalist

A 36.9 × 106 m3 reservoir constructed on Huntington River, Emery County, Utah, resulted in changes in physical habitat, water quality, temperature, and flow regime. The greatest changes in physical habitat resulted from: (1) sediment additions from dam and road construction plus erosion of reservoir basin during filling; and (2) changing stream flow from a spring high runoff regime to a moderated flow regime. Elimination of spring nutrient concentration peaks and overall reduction of total dissolved nutrient availability in the river plus moderate reductions in pH were the most apparent water quality changes below the reservoir. Water temperature …
