Assessment Of Influence That The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Has On Exercise Habit Of Members Living In Utah County, Gary L. Preston Jan 1987

Assessment Of Influence That The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Has On Exercise Habit Of Members Living In Utah County, Gary L. Preston

Theses and Dissertations

This study identified and analyzed the influence the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had on the decision of 309 respondents to exercise. The data obtained from the questionaires were analyzed using chi-square to compare males and females. Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were justified: women were more influenced by the LDS Church to exercise than men; LDS males and females exercised more than average American adults; walking, jogging, and aerobic dance were the most popular choices of LDS exercisers; and, there is a need to improve the awareness of LDS members concerning the Physical …

The Danish Immigrant Experience In The Fiction Of Enok Mortensen, Rudolf J. Jensen

The Bridge

Here are several short quotations from Enok Mortensen 's fiction for the purpose of showing its primary themes: " . .. for you emigrants, nothing is ever as good as it was in Denmark . .. you always have to compare . .. Over here one always possesses a peculiar unrest-only another hundred dollars, a thousand, or a million dollars more. In the old country everything was ordered and secure . .. Sons followed in the footsteps of their fathers, but as a rule they didn't get any farther either . .. Here in America it was the Golden Chance …

Religiousness And Mental Health Reconsidered: A Study Of An Intrinsically Religious Sample, Allen E. Bergin, Kevin S. Masters, P. Scott Richards

Faculty Publications

Despite the existence of strong viewpoints, the relation between religiousness and mental health is not yet clearly understood. The Religious Orientation Scale has provided researchers with a valuable tool for differentiating between intrinsic (/) and extrinsic (E) religious orientations, thereby clarifying some of the confusion in this area. In the present study we assessed correlations between these two scales and anxiety, personality traits, self-control, irrational beliefs, and depression. Results generally indicated that / is negatively correlated with anxiety and positively correlated with self-control and "better" personality functioning, whereas the opposite is true ofE. Correlations were generally not found with irrational …

A Reclassification Of The Genera Of Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Stephen L. Wood Dec 1986

A Reclassification Of The Genera Of Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Stephen L. Wood

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

A taxonomic revision of the genera of Scolytidae (Coleoptera) in the world fauna is presented. Included are 215 valid genera and 273 invalid generic and subgeneric names. The type-species for each genus-group name was examined, including the type-specimen of the type-species in those taxa where a holotype, lectotype, or neotype has been designated—with the exception of four contemporary genera, the type-series of which are lost, and six fossil genera for which no effort was made to locate the types. Taxonomic keys to the families of the Curculionoidea, and to the subfamilies, tribes, and genera of Scolytidae are presented. Descriptions and …

John C. Freemont's Expeditions Into Utah: An Historical Analysis Of The Explorer's Contributions And Significance To The Region, Alexander L. Baugh

Theses and Dissertations

John Charles Fremont conducted five expeditions to the West during a period of twelve years (1842-1854). On four occasions, during three of these expeditions (1843-1844, 1845, and 1854), the explorer entered the Utah region. His explorations in northern Utah in 1843 focused primarily on the scientific analysis and survey of the Great Salt Lake. In 1844, Fremont again entered the Utah area and made scientific observations and calculations about the region, including accurately defining the geographic region known as the Great Basin, the name given it by Fremont. In 1845, Fremont proceeded through Utah while enroute to California and spent …

Hydrology Of Bear Lake Basin And Its Impact On The Trophic State Of Bear Lake, Utah–Idaho, Vincent Lamarra, Chuck Liff, John Carter Oct 1986

Hydrology Of Bear Lake Basin And Its Impact On The Trophic State Of Bear Lake, Utah–Idaho, Vincent Lamarra, Chuck Liff, John Carter

Great Basin Naturalist

Bear Lake is a large, relatively pristine lake located in a graben valley. The lacustrine environment is more than 35,000 years old. Over that period of time, the Bear River intermittently flowed into Bear Lake. Approximately 10,000 to 8,000 BP, the Bear River ceased flowing directly into the lake. Between 1912 and 1924, channels were dug that diverted Bear River flows into the lake. An analysis was conducted to determine the impacts of Bear River flows upon the hydrologic and nutrient budgets of the Bear Lake ecosystem. In addition, the resulting limnological conditions were evaluated. Based upon eight years of …

Biogeographic Aspects Of Leeches, Mollusks, And Amphibians In The Intermountain Region, Peter Hovingh Oct 1986

Biogeographic Aspects Of Leeches, Mollusks, And Amphibians In The Intermountain Region, Peter Hovingh

Great Basin Naturalist

Some biogeographical and paleobiological aspects of leeches, mollusks, and amphibians in the Intermountain Region are reviewed. Areas of eastern Nevada and western Bonneville Basin as well as the tristate region of Nevada, Utah, and Idaho are poorly inventoried with respect to many aquatic-dependent animals. Observations of Batracobdella picta in the Wasatch Mountains and Erpobdella punctata in Tule Valley in the Bonneville Basin extends the western ranges of these leeches in the Great Basin. Life history and size of leeches varies among the study sites in the northern hemisphere. Aquatic mollusk species have diminished greatly in both prehistoric and historic times, …

Parasites Of The Woundfin Minnow, Plagopterus Argentissimus, And Other Endemic Fishes From The Virgin River, Utah, Richard A. Heckmann, James E. Deacon, Paul D. Greger

Great Basin Naturalist

Two hundred woundfin minnows, Plagopterus argentissimus, from four sites along the Virgin River, Utah, were examined on two dates during summer 1985. The foreguts of 211 woundfin and variable numbers of other fishes from the Virgin River near Beaver Dam Wash, Arizona, and Mesquite, Nevada, were examined for cestodes on four dates throughout 1979. Seven parasites were found in P. argentissimus: Posthodiplostomum minimum (metacercariae), Diplostomum spathaceum (metacercariae), Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, Gyrodactylus sp., Lernaea cyprinacea, Trichodina sp., and Ichthyophythirius multifiliis. Fungal infections were noted on two fish during the study. Seventeen Virgin River roundtail chub, Gila robusta seminuda, were examined …

Movements By Small Mammals On A Radioactive Waste Disposal Area In Southeastern Idaho, Craig R. Groves, Barry L. Keller Jul 1986

Movements By Small Mammals On A Radioactive Waste Disposal Area In Southeastern Idaho, Craig R. Groves, Barry L. Keller

Great Basin Naturalist

Average linear movement by populations of Dipodomys ordii, Microtus montanus, Perognathus parvus, and Peromyscus maniculatus was investigated over a 15-month period by live trapping on a low-level, radioactive waste disposal area in Idaho. No significant differences in movement among habitats were observed seasonally, excepting M. montanus in spring. Average linear movements within habitats ranged from 20 to 70 m for all species, but some patterns varied seasonally and among age classes for individual species. Although predation on contaminated small mammals from the disposal area is a vector of radionuclide transport, local movements by these rodents do not appear to be …

The Unusual American Career Of The Swiss Politician Emily Frey (1838-1922), Hans R. Guggisberg

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The title of this paper may arouse the expectation that we will concern ourselves mainly with a number of adventurous anecdotes from the biography of a prominent Swiss politician of the late 19th and early 20th century. I do not want to disappoint such expectations altogether. I shall indeed relate several episodes from Emil Frey's life which appear to be worth relating because they are not only quite unusual but - at least to my knowledge - also very little known. Frey's biography is linked to the history of Switzerland and Basel on the one hand, and quite particularly to …

Some Guidelines For Management Of The Black-Footed Ferret, Tim W. Clark May 1986

Some Guidelines For Management Of The Black-Footed Ferret, Tim W. Clark

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Management guidelines are specified for monitoring and protecting the Meeteetse black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) population and habitat and for dealing with a series of special management considerations. The Meeteetse ferret population and habitat status are summarized as background. An annual management schedule is outlined including methods and sources of existing baseline data with which to compare future results. The public support and organizational arrangements needed for successful overall management and recovery of the species are briefly discussed.

Descriptive Ethology And Activity Patterns Of Black-Footed Ferrets, Tim W. Clark, Louise Richardson, Steven C. Forrest, Denise E. Casey, Thomas M. Campbell Iii May 1986

Descriptive Ethology And Activity Patterns Of Black-Footed Ferrets, Tim W. Clark, Louise Richardson, Steven C. Forrest, Denise E. Casey, Thomas M. Campbell Iii

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Aspects of the aboveground ethology and activity patterns of the black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigipes) are described for a population in northwestern Wyoming as a first step in building a descriptive ethogram and quantification of activity patterns. We observed at least 237 individual ferrets for 208 hr on 441 occasions from 2 December 1981 through 25 September 1984. Mainenance behaviors (locomotion, alert, grooming, and sunning, defecation and urination, digging, and predation) and social behavior (reproduction, ontogeny, maternal, play, agonistic) are described as well as some ferret-human interactions. Ferret vocalizations are subjectively described. We located ferrets during most months including …
