Benjamin Franklin And Heinrich Zschokke, Donald H. Crosby Nov 1994

Benjamin Franklin And Heinrich Zschokke, Donald H. Crosby

Swiss American Historical Society Review

History has not seen fit to couple the names of Benjamin Franklin and Heinrich Zschokke. To attempt to do so at this 1ate date, then, may well suggest dilettantism or even charlatanry. What can be said in defense of what might seem to be a whimsical coupling, one which flies in the face of time-tested historical judgment? To proceed logically: one begins, as an American, with a study of colonial history before, during, and after the Revolution, where one very quickly encounters the towering figure of Benjamin Franklin. Then, as a student of Swiss history and culture, one turns to …

Geostatistical Analysis Of Resource Islands Under Artemisia Tridentata In The Shrub-Steppe, Jonathan J. Halvorson, Harvey Bolton Jr., Jeffrey L. Smith, Richard E. Rossi Oct 1994

Geostatistical Analysis Of Resource Islands Under Artemisia Tridentata In The Shrub-Steppe, Jonathan J. Halvorson, Harvey Bolton Jr., Jeffrey L. Smith, Richard E. Rossi

Great Basin Naturalist

Desert plants can influence the pattern of resources in soil resulting in small-scale enriched zones. Although conceptually simple, the shape, size, and orientation of these "resource islands" are difficult to study in detail using conventional sampling regimes. To demonstrate and alternative approach, we sampled soil under and around individual Artemisia tridentata (sagebrush), a dominant shrub of cool desert environments, and analyzed the samples with univariate statistics and geostatistics. Univariate statistics revealed that soil variables like total inorganic-N, soluble-C, and microbial biomass-C were distributed with highest mean values within about 25 cm of the plant axis and significantly lower mean values …

Timing, Distribution, And Abundance Of Kokanees Spawning In A Lake Tahoe Tributary, David A. Beauchamp, Phaedra E. Budy, Brant C. Allen, Jeffrey M. Godfrey Apr 1994

Timing, Distribution, And Abundance Of Kokanees Spawning In A Lake Tahoe Tributary, David A. Beauchamp, Phaedra E. Budy, Brant C. Allen, Jeffrey M. Godfrey

Great Basin Naturalist

We counted kokanee spawners and carcasses every 1–7 days from mid-September through mid-November in 1991 and 1992 in Taylor Creek, a tributary to Lake Tahoe, California–Nevada. Less than 1% of the spawning run entered Taylor Creek before flow from Fallen Leaf Lake was increased on 2 October 1991; in 1992 the peak occurred on 30 September or 1 October after flows increased on 29 September. In both years spawners concentrated in the middle three of five stream reaches below the impassable Fallen Leaf Lake dam. From tab-and-recovery experiments, the average longevity of male spawners in the stream was 3.5 days …

Resolving Conflicts Of Worldviews: Lds Women And Television, Daniel A. Stout Apr 1994

Resolving Conflicts Of Worldviews: Lds Women And Television, Daniel A. Stout

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

While disagreement exists about the impact of television viewing on LDS family life, this research takes an audience-focused approached to the question of "media effects" by examining how a sample of LDS women describe experiences with television in their own words. Three "interpretive communities" reflecting different strategies for resolving television-related conflicts in the home are identified. These diverse perspectives about the role of television in LDS family life provide a useful point of departure for counselors and other professionals seeking to understand the relationship between television viewing and family conflicts.

Investigating The Age Effects Of Family Structure On Adolescent Marijuana Use, John P. Hoffmann Apr 1994

Investigating The Age Effects Of Family Structure On Adolescent Marijuana Use, John P. Hoffmann

Faculty Publications

This study examines differences among older and younger adolescents in the influence of family structure, family relations, and peer relations on marijuana use. Data from a longitudinal sample of adolescents from the United States were stratified by age and used to assess these potential differences. Precise measures of family structure were constructed to account for the various manifestations of family forms. Multivariate analyses indicate that a recent divorce attenuates attachment among younger adolescents and leads to less family involvement among older adolescents. Moreover, older adolescents from stepparent families are less attached to their families. Changes in these family relationship variables …

Divorce In Mormon Women: A Qualitative Study, Rondi Mattson, Janet S. Scharman Apr 1994

Divorce In Mormon Women: A Qualitative Study, Rondi Mattson, Janet S. Scharman

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Divorced women who reentered as undergraduates at BYU were interviewed using the naturalistic inquiry model for qualitative research. All respondents reported some negative reaction related to their divorced status from fellow Church members. Women who divorced non-member men received more support from ward members than those who divorced active members. Identification of the religion with ward relationships meant that insensitive treatment by leaders during divorce could precipitate a spiritual crisis and potential departure from the Church. However, renewed spiritual strength was reported after some resolution of isses.

Alfred Gozenbach And The Making Of The Valley Queen Cheese Factory Of Milbank, South Dakota, Patricia J. Frazee Feb 1994

Alfred Gozenbach And The Making Of The Valley Queen Cheese Factory Of Milbank, South Dakota, Patricia J. Frazee

Swiss American Historical Society Review

At the age of ninety-one, Alfred Gonzenbach, co-founder of Valley Queen Cheese, Milbank, South Dakota, still projects many of the qualities it took for _him as a young man of twenty-two to pack up, leave his home in Switzerland, and journey to America. He is witty, willing to tackle new adventures, unwilling to let old age's minor and major ailments get him down, and possesses an uncanny memory for dates and figures. He still has the twinkle in his eyes that helped him win the heart of Gertrude "Trudy" Hauser, his wife, over 58 years ago. The spirit that kept …

What's In A Name? Book Of Mormon Language, Names, And [Metonymic] Naming, Gordon C. Thomasson Jan 1994

What's In A Name? Book Of Mormon Language, Names, And [Metonymic] Naming, Gordon C. Thomasson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Anthropological perspectives lend insight on names and on the social and literary function of names in principle and in the Book of Mormon. A discussion of the general function of names in kinship; secret names; and names, ritual, and rites of passage precedes a Latter-day Saint perspective. Names and metonymy are used symbolically. Examples include biblical and Book of Mormon metonymic naming, nomenclature, and taxonomy. Biblical laws of purity form the foundation for a pattern of metonymic associations with the name Lamanite, where the dichotomy of clean/unclean is used to give name to social alienation and pollution.

The Allegory Of The Olive Tree: The Olive, The Bible, And Jacob 5, Stephen D. Ricks, John W. Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

In the Book of Mormon, the allegory of the olive tree—written by a prophet named Zenos and later quoted by the prophet Jacob to his people—stands out as a unique literary creation worthy of close analysis and greater appreciation. Besides its exceptional length and exquisite detail, this text conveys important teachings, deep emotion, and wisdom related to God’s tender devotion and aspirations for the house of Israel on earth.

In The Allegory of the Olive Tree, 20 scholars shed light on the meaning, themes, and rhetorical aspects of the allegory, as well as on its historical, cultural, and religious …

Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

This volume in the collected works of Hugh Nibley features the gifted Latter-day Saint scholar’s reflections on the thoughts of Brigham Young regarding politics, education, leadership, and the environment. Nibley has brought together a priceless collection of the early Mormon leader’s counsel to the Saints of his era—counsel that is still relevant today. Add to these prophetic insights the scholarship and plain speaking that characterize Dr. Nibley’s works and the result is an eye-opening and sobering invitation to reevaluate our priorities.

The timeliness of Brigham’s counsel on these topics will quickly become apparent to readers, as will the unique insights …

Risk-Taking Predispositions Among Mormon Women: Improving Communication About Health And Environmental Risks, Shelly Nicholls Jan 1994

Risk-Taking Predispositions Among Mormon Women: Improving Communication About Health And Environmental Risks, Shelly Nicholls

Theses and Dissertations

This study measures risk-taking predisposition among a conservative religious population of women, in this instance Mormon women. Risk taking is defined as a recognition of some probability of negative consequences to an action, which can include the loss of a potential reward as well as a punishment. A risk-taking predisposition results when individuals are not risk aversive but, in fact, enjoy risk taking.

Survey research collected at two conferences in Utah reveal the likelihood of moderate levels of rebellious and adventurous risk-taking predisposition among the over 500 Mormon women respondents. It is suggested that religious affiliation or economic and educational …

Other-Centeredness And Depression In A Sample Of Mormon Women, Janice G. Nielson Jan 1994

Other-Centeredness And Depression In A Sample Of Mormon Women, Janice G. Nielson

Theses and Dissertations

Other-centeredness and depression were examined to see if a relationship existed between the two. One scale measuring other-centeredness and another measuring depression were given to a sample of married Mormon women who did not work outside the home. Other-centeredness and depression were significantly negatively correlated. The women scoring in the top one-third of the range of other-centeredness scores suffered no depression on the depression scale. The factor most predictive for depression was the relationship the women had with her husband, and other-centeredness was found to overlap with this variable to some extent. The factors of health, income, and education were …
