State Department Of Environmental Quality V. Landmine Company, Melissa Christensen Jan 1996

State Department Of Environmental Quality V. Landmine Company, Melissa Christensen

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The State Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is initiating action against the Landmine Company on the grounds of violation of the Clean Air Act. Section 107(a) of the Clean Air Act declares that each state "shall have the primary responsibility for assuring air quality within the entire geographic area comprising each state." Responsibility to "ensure a safe and healthy environment for all residents, maintain healthy ecosystems needed for the development of tourist activities and promote economic development" has been conferred on the State DEQ through state law. Therefore, the DEQ has adequate standing to bring a suit against the Landmine …

Conversation In Nauvoo About The Corporeality Of God, Jacob Neusner Jan 1996

Conversation In Nauvoo About The Corporeality Of God, Jacob Neusner

BYU Studies

Religion scholar Jacob Neusner looks at the corporeal nature of God through the lens of Mormonism and Judaism. He addresses anthropomorphism and incarnation, and concludes that the way to know God is through “our relationship with him, not through our act of the incarnation of God in heart and mind and soul.” Neusner appreciates the powerful doctrine of God’s corporeality taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith in the 1842 King Follett Sermon, which says that men may converse with God “as one man converses with another.” He says, “In the formative documents of the Torah in its oral version, that …

Health Insurance And Early Retirement: Evidence From The Availability Of Continuation Coverage, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 1996

Health Insurance And Early Retirement: Evidence From The Availability Of Continuation Coverage, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

The dramatic postwar decline in the labor force participation of older men in the United States has motivated a sizable body of literature on retirement behavior. Three factors, in particular, have been studied extensively: the growth of the Social Security program (see, for example, Burtless 1986; Burtless and Moffitt 1984; Diamond and Hausman 1984; Hausman and Wise 1985; Sueyoshi 1989), the increased availability and generosity of private pensions (Stock and Wise 1990a, 1990b), and the expansion of federal disability insurance (Bound and Waidmann 1992). One potentially important factor that until recently has not received much attention is the availability of …

A Naturalistic Study Of The History Of Mormon Quilts And Their Influence On Today's Quilters, Helen-Louise Hancey Jan 1996

A Naturalistic Study Of The History Of Mormon Quilts And Their Influence On Today's Quilters, Helen-Louise Hancey

Theses and Dissertations

This interpretive study investigated the "quilt" and its significance to Latter-day Saint Women. Mormon master quilters were chosen because of their knowledge of fabrics, patterns, and symbolism, their skill levels, and their intense interest in quilting. The researcher conducted interviews with the master quilters from July 1995 to April 1996. Field notes were taken and data concerning both observed actions and verbal comments regarding the importance of the quilt were collected, charted, coded, and analyzed.

Several dominant patterns and themes emerged from analyses of the data, including: quilting is an enjoyable and active art form among Mormon women, pattern selection …

Methazolamide For Essential Voice Tremor, Christopher Dromey, Karen Busenbark, L Ramig, William C. Koller Jan 1996

Methazolamide For Essential Voice Tremor, Christopher Dromey, Karen Busenbark, L Ramig, William C. Koller

Faculty Publications

We studied the safety and efficacy of methazolamide (average dose 168 mg/day) in a placebo-controlled blinded investigation in nine patients with essential voice tremor. There were no significant differences for physician or patient clinical rating scores. Digital audio tape recordings showed no difference for amplitude modulation, but frequency modulation was significantly altered by methazolamide. Side effects were common with the drug. We conclude that methazolamide has limited usefulness in the treatment of essential voice tremor.

The Parkinson Larynx: Tremor And Videostroboscopic Findings, Christopher Dromey, Kathe S. Perez, Lorraine Olson Ramig, Marshall E. Smith

Faculty Publications

Summary: Patients with Parkinson's disease have a high incidence of speech, voice, and laryngeal abnormalities. To characterize laryngeal abnormalities, visual-perceptual ratings of endoscopic and stroboscopic examinations of 22 patients diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease and 7 patients with Parkinson's-plus syndromes were carried out by four trained viewers. Incidence of tremor, tremor location, phase closure, phase symmetry, amplitude, and mucosal waveform were scored. Tremor was observed in one or more of these conditions--rest, normal pitch and loudness, or loud phonation--for most of the 29 patients. Fifty-five percent of the idiopathic Parkinson's disease patients had tremor, with the primary location being vertical …

Kinetic Analysis Of The Fate Of Nitric Oxide Synthesized By Macrophages In Vitro, Randy S. Lewis, Snait Tamir, Steven R. Tannenbaum, William M. Deen Dec 1995

Kinetic Analysis Of The Fate Of Nitric Oxide Synthesized By Macrophages In Vitro, Randy S. Lewis, Snait Tamir, Steven R. Tannenbaum, William M. Deen

Faculty Publications

To investigate the fate of nitric oxide (NO) synthesized by activated macrophages, the concentrations of NO and its principal reaction products, nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-), were measured as a function of time in suspension cultures of RAW264.7 macrophages attached to microcarrier beads. Synthesis of NO became evident 2-5 h after stimulation of the cells, and steady concentrations of NO were achieved after about 9 h. The appearance of NO in the extracellular fluid coincided with the appearance of NO2- and NO3-, which were formed thereafter at approximately equal and constant rates. Using a kinetic model based on rate constants …

The Crisis Of Switzerland On The Threshold Of The European Union, H. Dwight Page Nov 1995

The Crisis Of Switzerland On The Threshold Of The European Union, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

During the fifty years since the conclusion of World War II in 1945, Europe has undergone more radical changes than during the three preceding millennia. The Treaty of Maastricht, prepared by the twelve members of the European Community in December, 1991, legalizes a process of European social, economic and political unification and homogenization contradicting the evolution of European politics and societies since the fall of the Roman Empire. The majority of the nation states of Western Europe have been generated by a concerted struggle against amalgamation into large transnational empires. Notable examples are France, formed by the dissolution of its …

Classification Of The Riparian Vegetation Along A 6-Km Reach Of The Animas River, Southwestern Colorado, Gillian M. Walford, William L. Baker Oct 1995

Classification Of The Riparian Vegetation Along A 6-Km Reach Of The Animas River, Southwestern Colorado, Gillian M. Walford, William L. Baker

Great Basin Naturalist

Riparian ecosystems are important components of landscapes, particularly because of their role in biodiversity. A first step in using a "coarse-filter" approach to riparian biodiversity conservation is to determine the kinds of riparian ecosystems. These ecosystems vary substantially in plant species composition along a single river reach, as well as between rivers, and yet the river-reach scale has received little attention. We sampled the vascular plant composition of 67 contiguous patches of riparian vegetation along the reach of the Animas River, in southwestern Colorado's San Juan Mountains, that is relatively undisturbed by human land uses. Using cluster analysis and detrended …

Corporation Of The Presiding Bishop V. Amos, Matthew David Dimick Sep 1995

Corporation Of The Presiding Bishop V. Amos, Matthew David Dimick

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The Supreme Court has long sought for a consistent principle in constitutional theory that will "be a master principle that can guide the interpretation of both religion clauses" (Tushnet, 1691). Indeed, at times both the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause seem to contradict. Such an instance arose in Corporation of the Presiding Bishop v. Amos. In this case the Court applied the religious accommodation principle to allow a religious group the right to remain an autonomous entity thereby maintaining protection guaranteed under the Free Exercise Clause, also recognizing "that the government may (and sometimes must) accommodate religious practices …

Book Review: Captain Wirz. Eine Chronik. Ein Dokumentarischer Roman., Leo Schelbert Jun 1995

Book Review: Captain Wirz. Eine Chronik. Ein Dokumentarischer Roman., Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

This work, part novel, part chronicle, part historical reconstruction, pursues the thesis: "All involved with Andersonville were in the main pushed, manipulated, cheated" (189). This tale of misfortune has no heroes: Its central character is Henry Wirz, who for some months towards the end of his life was commander of Andersonville, one of the most notorious Confederate prisons for captured soldiers of the North.

Invertebrate Fauna Of Wastewater Ponds In Southeastern Idaho, Karen L. Cieminski, Lester D. Flake Apr 1995

Invertebrate Fauna Of Wastewater Ponds In Southeastern Idaho, Karen L. Cieminski, Lester D. Flake

Great Basin Naturalist

Water column invertebrates were sampled with 3.8-L activity traps in 15 sewage, industrial, and radioactive wastewater ponds at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory in southeastern Idaho. One collection was made per pond, per month, during all months the ponds were ice-free from June 1990 through July 1991. Arsenic, barium, boron, lead, selenium, and mercury were detected in ponds. Sewage ponds generally had higher nitrogen and phosphorus levels than industrial and radioactive ponds. Of the 30 aquatic invertebrate taxa collected, the most ubiquitous were Rotifera, Daphnidea, Eucopepdoa, Ostracoda, Acari, Baetidae, Corixidae, Notonectidiae, Dytiscidae, and Chironomidae. Activity trap samples from sewage ponds …

Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of The Practices And Beliefs Of Amcap Members, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts Apr 1995

Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of The Practices And Beliefs Of Amcap Members, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Three hundred members of the Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists (AMCAP) were randomly selected and asked about their use of spiritual interventions in their professional work. Two hundred and fifteen (72%) AMCAP members responded to the survey and indicated that they use a wide variety of spiritual interventions. Praying silently for clients, teaching spiritual concepts, encouraging forgiveness, using the religious community as a support, and encouraging clients to pray were used much more frequently than were priesthood blessing by therapists, praying with clients, and asking clients to memorize scriptures. Critical incident case examples provided by the therapists revealed that …
