Two Paradigms For The Market Value Of Liabilities, Robert R. Reitano, Craig B. Merrill Jan 1997

Two Paradigms For The Market Value Of Liabilities, Robert R. Reitano, Craig B. Merrill

Faculty Publications

Financial valuation models can be applied to insurance- related claims. In particular, these models are being employed to calculate the market value of insurance liabilities. The goal of this paper is to introduce the various approaches to valuation that are used in the finance literature and show how the valuation of insurance liabilities fits into the financial valuation framework. The theory suggests that securitization of insurance liabilities may lead to better market value calculations.

The Sound Of Utah: The Presence Of Geographical Elements In Music Written About The State Of Utah, Kamia Walton Holt Jan 1997

The Sound Of Utah: The Presence Of Geographical Elements In Music Written About The State Of Utah, Kamia Walton Holt

Theses and Dissertations

Music is a by-product of place and time. Musicians have opportunities to use the idea of place in their music. Thus, music has regionally distinctive characteristics which reflect human perceptions of the physical environment. Artists of the past and present focus on geographical themes, and paint a picture of ‘place’ in their music. This thesis focuses on the music of a geographical location: Utah. Musicians wrote of Utah in hymns of the past, and contemporary musicians continue to write music about Utah. This thesis answers the questions: Is music characterized by geography? How have the local musicians been influenced by …

The Ability Of Children With Specific Language Impairment To Participate In A Group Decision Task, Lee Robinson, Martin Fujiki, Bonnie Brinton, Valyne J. Watson Jan 1997

The Ability Of Children With Specific Language Impairment To Participate In A Group Decision Task, Lee Robinson, Martin Fujiki, Bonnie Brinton, Valyne J. Watson

Faculty Publications

This study examined the ability of 6 children with specific language impairment (SLI), ages 8:10 to 12:5 (years; months), to participate in a group negotiation task. Each child interacted with two peers to select toys that children their age would enjoy. Performance was compared to both chronological age-similar (CS) peers and language similar (LS) peers performing the same task. Analyses of the resulting interactions indicated that subjects with SLI produced significantly fewer utterances than the other children in the triad. Similar differences were not observed in the CS or LS triads. Additionally, significantly fewer utterances were addressed to the children …

The Ability Of Children With Specific Language Impairment To Access And Participate In An Ongoing Interaction, Lee Robinson, Martin Fujiki, Julie Campbell Spencer

Faculty Publications

This study investigated the ability of 6 children with specific language impairment (SLI), ages 8;10 to 12;5 (years;months), to enter and participate in an ongoing dyadic interaction. Performance was compared to that of 6 chronological age-matched (CA) peers and 6 language-similar (LS) peers. All children in the LS and CA groups successfully accessed the interaction, and most did so quickly. Two children from the SLI group did not access, and the 4 remaining subjects required varying amounts of time to access. Following successful access, the triadic interactions of subjects were examined. The accessing children with SU talked significantly less, were …

Helminths Of The Southwestern Toad, Bufo Microscaphus, Woodhouse's Toad, Bufo Woodhousii (Bufonidae), And Their Hybrids From Central Arizona, Stephen R. Goldberg, Charles R. Bursey, Keith B. Malmos, Brian K. Sullivan, Hay Cheam

Great Basin Naturalist

The gastrointestinal tracts, lungs, and urinary bladders from 77 Bufo microscaphus, 61 Bufo woodhousii, and 8 of their hybrids were examined for helminths. One species of trematode (Glypthelmins quieta), 1 species of cestode (Distoichometra bufonis), and 5 species of nematodes (Aplectana incerta, A. itzocanensis, Rhabdias americanus, Physaloptera sp., and Physocephalus sp.) were found. The greatest prevalence (41%) and mean intensity (231.7) were recorded for Aplectana incerta in Bufo woodhousii. It appears hybrids harbor fewer parasites than either parent species.

Western Balsam Bark Beetle, Dryocoetes Confusus Swaine, Flight Periodicity In Northern Utah, E. Matthew Hansen Nov 1996

Western Balsam Bark Beetle, Dryocoetes Confusus Swaine, Flight Periodicity In Northern Utah, E. Matthew Hansen

Great Basin Naturalist

The flight periodicity of western balsam bark beetle (Dryocoetes confusus Swaine) in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, was studied during the summer months of 1992, 1993, and 1994. Contents of baited funnel traps were tallied by species up to 3 times weekly. Two main periods of flight activity were observed each year. The first and, generally, largest occurred in early summer soon after flight was initiated for the season. A 2nd period was observed in late summer, generally August. Timing of the 2 periods was influenced by unusually warm or cool weather in each study year. The 1st period had …

Inmates Of Honor: Mormon Cohabs In The Idaho Penitentiary, 1885-1890, Fred E. Woods, Merle W. Wells

Faculty Publications

While stories of Idaho's Mormon polygamists' capture and trial are well known, the prison experiences of these men are not. Since prison overcrowding was a nineteenth-century problem too, they served their sentences in several states. Many kept diaries or journals, and from these personal accounts we can learn a good deal about their life in prison.

Patent Protection In The European Community, Carey Nuttall Sep 1996

Patent Protection In The European Community, Carey Nuttall

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

When firms develop products, they desire to protect their investment and seek to prevent other firms from producing the same products. Patents are the most common form of protection sought by these firms. Once the patent has been obtained, they can exclusively control the production and distribution of the products, or they can license other businesses to perform these tasks. Patents give companies a monopoly on the product that is protected. Companies gain from these monopolies; so, naturally, they want to maintain as much control as possible over the production and distribution of their patented goods.

A Lengthier Treatment Of Length, Brian D. Stubbs Jul 1996

A Lengthier Treatment Of Length, Brian D. Stubbs

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Book of Mormon language frequently contains lengthy structures of rather awkward English. Some may consider these to be instances of poor grammar, weakness in writing (Ether 12:23–26), or the literary ineptness of a fraudulent author; however, I see them as potentially significant support for a translation from a Near Eastern language in an ancient American setting. Many of these examples of awkward, lengthy structures in English parallel Semitic (and Egyptian) patterns, particularly the circumstantial or hal-clause. In response to critics of my previous proposal to that effect, this article is a lengthier treatment of these lengthy structures found in …

Perceptions Of Utah Alfalfa Growers About Wildlife Damage To Their Hay Crops: Implications For Managing Wildlife On Private Land, Terry A. Messmer, Sue Schroeder Jul 1996

Perceptions Of Utah Alfalfa Growers About Wildlife Damage To Their Hay Crops: Implications For Managing Wildlife On Private Land, Terry A. Messmer, Sue Schroeder

Great Basin Naturalist

We conducted a survey of Utah alfalfa (Medicago sativa) growers in 1993 to identify wildlife damage problems to bay crops. Such surveys can provide wildlife managers with important insights regarding landowners' wildlife damage management concerns and needs. Pocket gophers (Thomomys spp.) and mule deer (Odecoileus hemionus) were perceived by growers as causing the most damage. Respondents reported a total annual loss of $350,000 or $24.79/ha (2.8% of the total crop value) because of wildlife damage in alfalfa crops. Decreased hay quantity was the most frequently cited problem caused by wildlife. Compensation and incentive programs were …

The Fruit Of The Vine: Wine At Masada And In The New Testament, Jo Ann H. Seely

BYU Studies

Blessed art Thou, O Lord, our God, King of the Universe

who created sweet wine, good must from grapevines,

that is pleasing to a person and good for man,

that gladdens the heart and makes the face shine.

It is consolation to mourners, and those of bitter spirit forget their misery.

It is medicine to all who drink it. (to him who drinks it sensibly).

It is heart's joy, gladness, and great delight to its drinkers.

He, our God, created it of old for pleasure,

among the works established from the beginning,

so that all who drink it shall bless …

A Final Visit To The Land Of My Birth Baselland, Switzerland June 1994, Ernest Albert Thurkauf Jun 1996

A Final Visit To The Land Of My Birth Baselland, Switzerland June 1994, Ernest Albert Thurkauf

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Mother was exiled 30 years in America -- so I spent 30 days in Liestal, one for every year she was isolated and banished! My mind was constantly on such thoughts as I daily walked the streets of Liestal. Tired as I was, I never reached the point of exhaustion such as she did - - especially when she walked behind the harrows with a four-horse team [One Small Lifetime, page 79.] My 30 days for her 30 years was poor compensation for a devoted mother who almost died to bring me into the world! [One Small Lifetime, bottom of …

A Return Visit To The Land Of My Youth Alberta, Canada, Ernest Albert Thurkauf Jun 1996

A Return Visit To The Land Of My Youth Alberta, Canada, Ernest Albert Thurkauf

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In my old years, I often had the urge to revisit the scenes of my youthful days in Alberta, Canada. Florence, my beloved wife, and I had hoped to do it together, but because of her failing health and serious strokes, it was never to be. After her passing in 1985, I purchased a new auto with intentions of_ making a North-Western journey alone. But after numerous trips -- up to North Carolina and New York State -- in the two years after her death, I began to have serious misgivings about a long journey alone. My two sisters, as …

Increasing Husbands' Involvement In Domestic Labor: Issues For Therapists, Kipling S. Rasmussen, Alan J. Hawkins, Kenneth P. Schwab Jun 1996

Increasing Husbands' Involvement In Domestic Labor: Issues For Therapists, Kipling S. Rasmussen, Alan J. Hawkins, Kenneth P. Schwab

Faculty Publications

As a result of the dramatic increase in women's participation in the work force, more relationship therapists are seeing couples who are dissatisfied with how domestic labor is divided in their homes. Although, this issue may seem therapeutically straightforward, there are many aspects which make its renegotiation surprisingly problematic and complex. This article is an effort to delineate some of these issues such as engaging men in therapy, exploring emotional issues connected with housework, and the mechanism of gatekeeping. Also included is a therapeutic framework for addressing client concerns about domestic responsibilities.

Effects Of Douglas-Fir Foliage Age Class On Western Spruce Budworm Oviposition Choice And Larval Performance, Kimberly A. Dodds, Karen M. Clancy, Kathryn J. Leyva, David Greenberg, Peter W. Price Apr 1996

Effects Of Douglas-Fir Foliage Age Class On Western Spruce Budworm Oviposition Choice And Larval Performance, Kimberly A. Dodds, Karen M. Clancy, Kathryn J. Leyva, David Greenberg, Peter W. Price

Great Basin Naturalist

The western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman) prefers to feed on flushing buds and current-year needles of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco). Budworm larvae will not typically consume older age classes of needles unless all current-year foliage is depleted. We tested the following null hypotheses: (1) budworm larvae can feed on foliage with a wide range of qualities (i.e., current 1-, 2-, or 3-year-old needles) without measurable effects on fitness; and (2) budworm adults do not show any oviposition preference linked to the age of the foliage they fed on as larvae. We used both laboratory and field …
