The Selection Of Narrow Wavebands For Optimizing Water Quality Monitoring On The Great Miami River, Ohio Using Hyperspectral Remote Sensor Data Jan 2001

The Selection Of Narrow Wavebands For Optimizing Water Quality Monitoring On The Great Miami River, Ohio Using Hyperspectral Remote Sensor Data

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Remote sensing data were successfully used to estimate spatial and temporal variation of optical water quality parameters such as chlorophyll a, turbidity and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) of the Great Miami River, Ohio. During the summer of 1999, spectral data were collected with a hand-held spectroradiometer, a laboratory spectrometer and airborne hyperspectral sensors. Approximately 80 km of the Great Miami River were imaged during a flyover with a Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) sensor. Approximately 10 km were imaged during a second flyover to repeat coverage of the urban and industrial influences around the city of Dayton, Ohio. Instream measurements …

13-C Nmr Analysis Of Soot Produced From Model Compounds And A Coal, Mark S. Solum, Adel F. Sarofim, Ronald J. Pugmire, Thomas H. Fletcher, Haifeng Zhang

Faculty Publications

Soot samples, including the associated organics, produced from an Illinois No. 6 coal (five samples) and two model compounds, biphenyl (three samples) and pyrene (two samples), have been studied by 13C NMR methods. The coal soot data served as a guide to selection of the temperature range that would be most fruitful for investigation of the evolution of aerosols composed of soot and tars that are generated from model compounds. The evolution of the different materials in the gas phase followed different paths. The coal derived soots exhibited loss of aliphatic and oxygen functional groups prior to significant growth …

The study of children's social and emotional development requires that attention be paid to such factors as dispositional/biological factors (e.g., temperament), familial interactions and relationships, social contexts (e.g., school, neighborhood), and culture. For example, Hinde (1995) has advanced the notion that development be considered from a multi-level perspective beginning with individual characteristics and progressing the interaction, relationship, and group levels of analysis and conjecture. At the level of the individual child, developmental scientists have studies such constructs as temperament that might lead to problematic social or behavioral outcomes. One such interpersonal characteristic is that of "difficult" temperament – a phenomenon …

Varieties Of Religion-Family Linkages, John R. Snarey, David C. Dollahite Jan 2001

Varieties Of Religion-Family Linkages, John R. Snarey, David C. Dollahite

Faculty Publications

The 4 articles in this special issue make important contributions to both family and religious studies as well as to their interface. This commentary begins by considering 4 unifying themes present across all of the articles, including meaningful religion-family linkages, the importance of gender differences in the faith-family interface, the significance of intergenerational relationships, and the need for better theory. The authors then discuss the unique major strength and secondary limitations of each study. Finally, the commentary focuses on two challenges inhibiting the contemporary study of religion and the family–a relative lack of racial and religious diversity in samples and …

Seismic Adjustments: The Influence Of Inconvenience And Efficacy Perceptions, State Of Residence, And Demographic Factors, Nicole Elise Anderson Dec 2000

Seismic Adjustments: The Influence Of Inconvenience And Efficacy Perceptions, State Of Residence, And Demographic Factors, Nicole Elise Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that peoples' perceptions of household seismic adjustments, in addition to their perceptions of earthquakes themselves, should predict the likelihood that seismic adjustments are performed. However, little research has been done to address this issue. While recent research has found peoples' perceptions of the effectiveness of household adjustments to influence adjustment levels, people's perceptions of inconvenience of household seismic adjustments - namely the cost, time effort, required cooperation and required knowledge involved in making these adjustments - have been found to not influence seismic adjustment. However, this study did find that the higher the perceived inconveniences …

Gender Differences In Sexual Behaviors And Factors Associated With Nonuse Of Condoms Among Homeless And Runaway Youths, Duncan A. Mackeller, Linda A. Valleroy, John P. Hoffmann, Donna Glebatis, Marlene Lalota, William Mcfarland, Johnny Westerholm, Robert S. Janssen Dec 2000

Janssen

Faculty Publications

Few studies have examined gender-specific factors associated with the nonuse of condoms among homeless and runaway youths (HRYs)–a population at high risk for HIV infection. In this article, we evaluate these factors and explore gender differences in background experiences, psychosocial functioning, and risk behaviors among HRYs from four U.S. metropolitan areas. Of 879 sexually active HRYs sampled, approximately 70% reported unprotected sexual intercourse during a 6-month period, and nearly a quarter reported never using condoms in the same period. Among males and females, having only one sex partner in the previous 6 months had the strongest association with nonuse of …

My Journey Through The World In Happiness And Sorrow, Ida Mooser Hattemer, Theodore Alphonse Hattemer

Swiss American Historical Society Review

This is my mother's story of her Swiss family's immigration from Switzerland to Kentucky in 1895, and the story of her own American family. My mother, Ida Mooser Hattemer, dearly loved her native Switzerland, her family, and her Swiss relatives whom she talked about so much that her children felt as if they knew them intimately.

Status Of Descurainia Torulosa (Brassicaceae), Jerald S. Bricker, Gregory K. Brown, Tricia L. Patts Lewis Oct 2000

Status Of Descurainia Torulosa (Brassicaceae), Jerald S. Bricker, Gregory K. Brown, Tricia L. Patts Lewis

Western North American Naturalist

Descurainia torulosa was established in 1983 based on material collected in northwestern Wyoming. The species is now known from 2 disjunct populations in southwestern Wyoming, and recent collections have expanded the known distribution within the northern portion of its range. The north-south disjunct distribution and apparent habitat differences have stimulated questions concerning the degree of relatedness between the disjunct elements to the point that the southern populations have been suggested to be a distinct taxon. Recognition of D. torulosa as a distinct species has also been questioned. This paper is based on field examination of D. torulosa populations, study of …

C3 And C4 Species Changes Identified By Δ13C Values Of Soil Organic Matter In A Colorado Prairie, Penelope Sinton, Tim Seastedt, Barry Bennett, Carl Bock, Jane Bock Oct 2000

C3 And C4 Species Changes Identified By Δ13C Values Of Soil Organic Matter In A Colorado Prairie, Penelope Sinton, Tim Seastedt, Barry Bennett, Carl Bock, Jane Bock

Western North American Naturalist

We measured carbon isotope signatures (δ13C) from 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm soil depth intervals for grassland soils near Boulder, Colorado. These grasslands included tall-, short-, and mixed-grass prairies that were grazed, ungrazed, or hayed. Soils exhibited δ13C signatures consistent with observations that current sites are a mix of C3 and C4 species, with C3 plants more abundant in mixed-grass than in native tall- or shortgrass prairies. The δ13C signatures were not significantly different for grassland types; however, management treatments (grazing, no grazing, haying) significantly influenced changes in soil δ13 …

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Acetaminophen, Cyclooxygenase 2, And Fever, Daniel L. Simmons, David Wagner, Kenneth Westover Oct 2000

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Acetaminophen, Cyclooxygenase 2, And Fever, Daniel L. Simmons, David Wagner, Kenneth Westover

Faculty Publications

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently used antipyretic agents that most probably exert their antifever effect by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX)–2. Thus, COX-2–selective drugs or null mutation of the COX-2 gene reduce or prevent fever. Acetaminophen is antipyretic and analgesic, as are NSAIDs, but it lacks the anti-inflammatory and anticoagulatory properties of these drugs. This has led to the speculation that a COX variant exists that is inhibitable by acetaminophen. An acetaminophen-inhibitable enzyme is inducible in the mouse J774.2 monocyte cell line. Induction of acetaminophen-inhibitable prostaglandin E2 synthesis parallels induction of COX-2. Thus, inhibition of pharmacologically distinct COX-2 enzyme activity by …

Establishing The Church Simply, John P. Livingstone Oct 2000

Establishing The Church Simply, John P. Livingstone

BYU Studies

The Church's concern for Native Americans led to the development of guidelines for simplifying curriculum and organization, thereby allowing indigenous priesthood leaders to move the Church forward more quickly and effectively where there are special language or cultural needs. The author, a former district and mission president, explores that development and shares his personal experience with the Church's simplified program.

Recent Notes About Olives In Antiquity, Wilford M. Hess Oct 2000

Recent Notes About Olives In Antiquity, Wilford M. Hess

BYU Studies

When a group of LDS scholars collaborated in 1994 under the auspices of the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies to publish a book on the allegory of the olive tree in Jacob 5, few substantial works on olive production in the ancient world existed. Now, two new archaeological books add a wealth of information to our understanding of the importance of the olive in ancient life. Although expensive and technical, these new volumes offer further insights for anyone interested in olive culture as reflected in the scriptures, especially in the Book of Mormon.

Replication: Regressive Reproduction Or Progressive Evolution?, Graham Wright Sep 2000

Replication: Regressive Reproduction Or Progressive Evolution?, Graham Wright

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Increasing numbers of organizations are "replicating" the programs of successful microfinance institutions (MFIs). This approach allows rapid start-up using tested models and systems. These strengths are also weaknesses, though, since the models being replicated usually require substantial modifications to make them appropriate for local conditions. Furthermore, close adherence to "blueprints" is likely to substitute for careful research into the needs and opportunities for the provision of financial services to the poor--and thus the design of appropriate systems. Replication also risks the suppression of innovative ways of providing still better financial services--particularly when promoted by powerful apex funding organizations, as is …

Impact Assessment Of Microfinance And Organizational Learning: Who Will Survive?, James G. Copestake Sep 2000

Impact Assessment Of Microfinance And Organizational Learning: Who Will Survive?, James G. Copestake

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

To what extent is it possible for organizations to reflect honestly on their own performance, draw appropriate conclusions, and then act on them? For many microfinance organizations this is now a question of survival. This paper argues that formal impact assessment can assist in the transition from donor-controlled replication projects to autonomous and adaptable organizations--but it often fails to do so. Pitfalls include inadequate attention to methodological detail and to the links between impact assessment and wider aspects of organizational change. The paper starts by highlighting the complexity of the overall task to which impact assessment is expected to contribute. …

Banking On Customer Loyalty, Craig Churchill Sep 2000

Banking On Customer Loyalty, Craig Churchill

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Enhancing customer loyalty is a microfinance institution's most important business strategy. Every critical element involved in managing microfinance operations--from product pricing to staff incentives, from marketing to eligibility requirements, from client screening to the menu of available services--can (and should) be formulated to promote loyalty. While most MFIs recognize the importance of client retention, few have designed business strategies to maximize customer loyalty. Hopefully that will change. This article details the economic impact that customer loyalty has on a microfinance institution (and the negative effect of desertion).

The Monument To Brigham Young And The Pioneers : One Hundred Years Of Controversy, J. Michael Hunter Sep 2000

The Monument To Brigham Young And The Pioneers : One Hundred Years Of Controversy, J. Michael Hunter

Faculty Publications

For more than a century, the Brigham Young Monument in Salt Lake City has been the center of sometimes acrimonious controversy. The idea and organization to create a monument were begun in 1891. The statue of Brigham Young was completed by Cyrus Dallin in 1893. Many delays in raising funds caused the monument not to be finished until 1900. Thereafter it often became the target of those trying to improve traffic conditions in the downtown area. In 1993, the monument was moved just north of the intersection to improve the flow of traffic. On the monuments one hundredth anniversary, "The …

A Comparison Of Riparian Condition And Aquatic Invertebrate Community Indices In Central Nevada, Tom B. Kennedy, Adina M. Merenlender, Gary L. Vinyard Aug 2000

A Comparison Of Riparian Condition And Aquatic Invertebrate Community Indices In Central Nevada, Tom B. Kennedy, Adina M. Merenlender, Gary L. Vinyard

Western North American Naturalist

The importance of maintaining healthy riparian communities to sustain natural stream processes and function is well documented. Land management agencies in the West are currently developing methods to assess and monitor riparian community condition to adapt land use practices that would better protect rangeland ecosystems. To determine whether these methods also provide an indication of abiotic and biotic stream condition, we compared the classification system of riparian communities developed by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to physical parameters of stream condition and to aquatic invertebrate community assemblages. Thirty-three sites in 19 different streams of the Toiyabe Range in central Nevada …

Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Henshawi) Spawning And Downstream Migration Of Juveniles Into Summit Lake, Nevada, Gary L. Vinyard, Alice Winzeler

Western North American Naturalist

The only remaining self-sustaining native population of lacustrine Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi) not affected by nonnative salmonids is in Summit Lake, Humboldt County, Nevada. Annual spawning runs in 1993 and 1994 were monitored at a fish trap on Mahogany Creek, the only spawning tributary for Summit Lake. Number of spawners was similar in both years, with 1290 upstream migrants observed in 1993 and 1255 in 1994. In 1993, 137 postspawners (10.6% of upstream migrants) returned to the lake, and in 1994, 434 postspawners (34.6% of upstream migrants) returned downstream through the fish trap. Two distinct groups …
