Using Language Corpora To Enhance Grammatical Proficiency In Chinese, Hsiao-Chien Chen Jul 2012

Using Language Corpora To Enhance Grammatical Proficiency In Chinese, Hsiao-Chien Chen

Theses and Dissertations

School curriculum and pedagogy change over time and are affected by changes in technology. One little used technology in foreign language classrooms is the electronic language corpus. In corpus-based linguistics, language corpora are often used as tools to analyze and observe various language features, including discourse, pragmatics, and syntax. However, language corpora can also act as a tool to assist language teachers by providing greater exposure to features of the language. Using language corpora is especially helpful in exposing learners to so-called authentic language used in a target language culture. Moreover, students can gradually enhance their language proficiency by using …

Iotacism And The Pattern Of Vowel Leveling In Roman To Byzantine Era Manuscripts: Perspectives From The Thomas Gignac Corpus, Craig Meister Jan 2012

Iotacism And The Pattern Of Vowel Leveling In Roman To Byzantine Era Manuscripts: Perspectives From The Thomas Gignac Corpus, Craig Meister

Student Works

After centuries of debate surrounding the change of the Greek simple vowels and diphthongs ι, υ, η, οι, and ει into the phoneme /i/, the process known as iotacism (sometimes referred to as itacism) has become not only an anomaly of philological analysis, but the phonetic reality of this vowel shift and leveling from the phonemes /i/, /oi/, /e:/, /y/, and /ei/ to /i/ have yet to be linguistically analyzed successfully within various systems of linguistic modeling. In order to fill this important gap within the history of the Greek language, this research seeks to use the Roman and Byzantine …

The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, Donald W. Parry Jan 2010

The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, Donald W. Parry

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

This paper examines various significant aspects of what may be designated the Dead Sea Scrolls Bible: its contents and description, scribal conventions, variant readings, use by modern English Bible translations, as well as parabiblical texts and their possible affiliation with the DSS Bible, canonicity, scriptural commentaries, tefillin, and mezuzot. An examination of the DSS biblical texts, which date to nearly a thousand years earlier than previously known texts of the Hebrew Bible, demonstrates a high degree of accuracy in the transmission of our Bible texts. Most variants offer only minor corrections to our biblical texts. Thus the scribe's professionalism overall …

History Of Latter-Day Saint Education In Nauvoo 1839-1845, Marnie Hopkins

Student Works

Understanding the history of education within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is essential in order to comprehend the full history of the Church, its people and culture. As the records of the Church have continued to be explored, members and non- members alike have been enriched by the lives of the early saints. Historians have made wonderful progress to provide the common reader with access to the records and history of the Church. However, there is still a substantial amount of research to be performed. One major gap in the research can be found during the Nauvoo …

Defining An Immigrant, Helle Mathiasen Jan 2004

Defining An Immigrant, Helle Mathiasen

The Bridge

Before emigrating in August 1965, I had already experienced America while a child living in Denmark. My first American memory is the smell of Wrigley's Doublement gum. I also remember the green gum package containing the thin, shiny silver paper with the jagged edge you had to remove in order to touch the delectable candy. For me, as a child, chewing gum was America. I was born in Vangede in 1940, the year the Germans invaded Denmark. During much of the five-year Nazi Occupation, our family lived in Sydhavnen, in Copenhagen, on Sjcel0r Boulevard number 3, in a onebedroom apartment. …

What's In A Word?, Cynthia L. Hallen

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The use of the word judge in the scriptures can cause confusion. By researching the etymologies and scriptural uses of the words judge and righteous, Cynthia Hallen observes that there is a difference between judging and judging righteously.

Editor's Introduction: “What Has Athens To Do With Jerusalem?”: Apostasy And Restoration In The Big Picture, Daniel C. Peterson

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

Introduction to the current issue, include editor's picks. Latter-day Saints appear to approach theology and history in ways that fit remarkably well into the Hebrew thought-world from which Christianity emerged rather than from the Hellenization that eventually emerged.

Philosophy And Early Christianity, Daniel W. Graham, James L. Siebach Jan 1999

Philosophy And Early Christianity, Daniel W. Graham, James L. Siebach

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

The early church was unable to continue once the apostles had departed. Bishops were only local officials and could not speak for the entire church. Beginning with the later second century, philosophy plays an increasingly important role in the church—this appears to be an effect rather than a cause of the apostasy.

Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, And Latin: Languages Of New Testament Judea, Roger T. Macfarlane

A trilingual inscription placed by Pontius Pilate upon the cross proclaimed "Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews." This titulus was able to be read by many of the Jews, John says, not only because of Golgatha's proximity to the city, but also because the text was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Pilate's declaration addressed the multilingual population of Jerusalem, both its residents and also its visitors, who were filling the city during the Passover. Weeks later, on the day of Pentecost, Peter and some Apostles addressed Jews, residents of Jerusalem who had gathered from every nation, and …
