Spatiotemporal Variation Of Alfalfa Leaf Area Index And Crop Water Productivity In An Irrigated Alfalfa Field, Keegan Dillon Hammond
Spatiotemporal Variation Of Alfalfa Leaf Area Index And Crop Water Productivity In An Irrigated Alfalfa Field, Keegan Dillon Hammond
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the world, there continues to be increasing demand for freshwater resources. With urban expansion, increased demand from a growing population, drought, and climate change, growers must produce more crops using less water. One approach to water conservation is with a variable rate irrigation (VRI) system. VRI technology allows growers to irrigate crops according to site-specific within-field variation instead of a uniform rate across the field. This thesis addresses aspects of within-field variation of irrigated alfalfa as it relates to the potential for VRI. Chapter 1 examines measurement of within-field variation of leaf area index (LAI) to inform variable-rate irrigation …

Byu Forum Address, Now On Video, Considers Authorship Issues
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
On 27 May 1997, Noel B. Reynolds, president of FARMS and professor of political science at BYU, presented an address at a BYU Forum Assembly. His topic: "The Authorship of the Book of Mormon." Reynolds brought students and faculty up to date on the state of knowledge on authorship issues related to the Book of Mormon, drawing on the research of many LDS scholars presented in two books he has compiled on the subject, the first in 1982 entitled Book of Mormon Authorship: New Light on Ancient Origins, and the second published this year under the title Book of …
Benefits And Challenges Of Computer-Assisted L2 Chinese Learning In Higher Education, Min Hu
Benefits And Challenges Of Computer-Assisted L2 Chinese Learning In Higher Education, Min Hu
Theses and Dissertations
The first article is a literature review that analyzed 32 articles on computer-assisted L2 Chinese learning in higher education from 2005-2021. Findings revealed current trends, such as mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) and the use of Web 2.0 technologies, and the importance of speaking as the most researched language skill. Most studies employed mixed methods and showed the positive effects of computer-assisted learning on L2 Chinese skills. Challenges identified included limited access to technology, technical difficulties, lack of time and support, and insufficient online/blended pedagogies and competencies. The second article used Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior to examine L2 Chinese instructors' …
Using De Novo Transcriptomes To Decipher The Relationships In Cutthroat Trout Subspecies (Oncorhynchus Clarkii), Andrea Leena Kokkonen
Using De Novo Transcriptomes To Decipher The Relationships In Cutthroat Trout Subspecies (Oncorhynchus Clarkii), Andrea Leena Kokkonen
Theses and Dissertations
Cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) is a salmonid native to Western North America. For almost 200 years, the taxonomy of these species has fluctuated as ichthyologists and fisheries managers alike have tried to understand the diversity seen within these fishes. In the 1950s, Robert Behnke reexamined the cutthroat trout and identified 14 subspecies based on morphological observations, Pleistocene events, and modern geographic ranges. These designations were instrumental in preserving the remaining diversity of cutthroat trout. Over time, molecular techniques (i.e. karyotypes, allozymes, and mtDNA) have largely replicated Behnke's phylogenies. However, these studies have revealed that some of these relationships are consistently …

Scrolls Examined From An Lds Perspective In A Long-Awaited Book
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Latter-day Saints love ancient religious records. In addition to the scriptures we now have, we look forward with anticipation to receiving the "words of the lost tribes of Israel" (2 Nephi 29:13), to the unsealing of a large portion of the golden plates, and to the restoration of other ancient texts authored by Adam, Enoch, Joseph, and others.

Review Looks At Old And New Subjects
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The most recent issue of the FARMS Review of Books examines books that attempt to promote the faith of Latter-day Saints in the Book of Mormon and presents lively critiques of books that attempt to destroy that faith. It reviews books on several aspects of scripture studies, particularly Book of Mormon geography. This issue reviews Ethan Smith's View of the Hebrews and gives more commentary on the B. H. Roberts question. It also reviews a selection of internet pages that discuss Mormonism, a novel based on the Book of Mormon, and reflections on the Book of Mormon by a well …

Once again the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies provides access to the most recent research on the Book of Mormon. The current issue covers a wide variety of topics, including the doctrinal messages of salvation in the Book of Mormon, a non-Mormon perspective on the Book of Mormon wars, the rod and sword as representations of the word of God, and a discussion of seemingly awkward sentence structures in the Book of Mormon.
Physics-Guided Modeling Of Acoustic Environments Using Limited Spatio-Spectro-Temporal Data, Mylan Ray Cook
Physics-Guided Modeling Of Acoustic Environments Using Limited Spatio-Spectro-Temporal Data, Mylan Ray Cook
Theses and Dissertations
When creating data-based models it is important to include the underlying physical characteristics and constraints of the data. If physical characteristics are not properly included in the model, results may be infeasible or physically impossible. Acoustic environments are better characterized by ensuring that models include the fundamental spatial, spectral, and temporal characteristics of noise sources, or how they change based on location, frequency, and time. When model data are limited, in availability or in reliability, additional care must be taken to ensure models predict feasible results. This dissertation focuses on physics-guided modeling of acoustic environments using limited data, taking into …

Rare Religious Documents Given To Farms
Rare Religious Documents Given To Farms
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Two sets of authentic religious documents were recently donated to FARMS. BYU alumni Orin and Rita Parker donated a sixteenth-century abridgment of the Hadith, a compilation of the Islamic prophet Muhammad's official statements on Islamic beliefs and practices. The rare book, copied by hand in 1549 in exquisite Arabic script, reads from back to front and from right to left. After working in Iraq for five years, Orin received the book at a farewell party held in the deputy foreign minister's house in Baghdad.
