Macroinvertebrate And Zooplankton Communities Of Utah Lake: A Review Of The Literature, James R. Barnes, Thomas W. Toole Feb 1981

Macroinvertebrate And Zooplankton Communities Of Utah Lake: A Review Of The Literature, James R. Barnes, Thomas W. Toole

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Early studies on the macroinvertebrates and zooplankton of Utah Lake were taxonomic in nature. Since the late 1960s, macroinvertebrates studies have concentrated on the Goshen Bay area of Utah Lake. The rocky shore macroinvertebrate community along the eastern shore of Goshen Bay is the most diverse and productive in Utah Lake (Toole 1973). The dominant organisms are the amphipod Hyatella azteca and the chironomid Dicrotendipes fumidus. Also present along the eastern shore is an extensive zone of the sponge Meyenia fluviatilis (Smith 1972). Two taxa, Chironomidae and Oligochaeta, dominate the silty-ooze community in the southern portion of Utah Lake …

Geology Of Utah Lake: Implications For Resource Management, Willis H. Brimhall, Lavere B. Merritt Feb 1981

Geology Of Utah Lake: Implications For Resource Management, Willis H. Brimhall, Lavere B. Merritt

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Utah Lake is a remnant of Lake Bonneville, from which it originated about 8,000 years ago. Analysis of sediment cores reveals significant variations in lake salinity and sedimentation rates. Notable examples are a very dry, high-salinity period between 5000 and 6000 years ago; a major freshening, wet period between 2700 and 3000 years ago; and a very dry, high-salinity period between 1400 and 2600 years ago, smaller variations are interspersed through the lake's history.
Long-term sedimentation rates are estimated at about 1 mm (0.039 in) per year in most of the lake, but post-colonization rates appear to be about 2 …

Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin Jan 1981

Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin

Theses and Dissertations

Recently the need for a more clearly defined structural basis for American local history has become acute. Concepts used in national history often fall short of the needs of local history. As a result, both professionals and amateurs are producing a rash of community histories without the benefit of adequate guidelines.

This thesis draws together a number of concepts useful in the development of American local history as a viable academic field of study. It tests these concepts in presenting the history of community in Winder, a small, rural population set in southeastern Idaho.

Population Movement And Growth In Utah County, Utah 1940 To 1980, Brian W. Maxfield Jan 1981

Population Movement And Growth In Utah County, Utah 1940 To 1980, Brian W. Maxfield

Theses and Dissertations

Utah County, Utah, and more particularly the Utah Valley area, has undergone an enormous change during the last forty years. Rapid growth and urbanization brings with it the problems of urban sprawl. Controlling this sprawl is determined often times by an effective growth policy. Mapping and analyzing growth patterns and trends is a useful method in determining the effectiveness of the "growth towards the cities" policy of Utah County. Research was conducted by using maps, air photos, and field work in locating the growth history of the county.
Growth has been influenced by several factors among which are the physical, …

Danes And Danish On The Great Plains: Some Sociolinguistic Aspects, Donald K. Watkins Jan 1981

Danes And Danish On The Great Plains: Some Sociolinguistic Aspects, Donald K. Watkins

The Bridge

The number of Scandinavians in the upper Midwest in 1850 was insignificant compared to the tens of thousands who arrived annually after the Civil War; but the early settlements, primarily in northern Illinois and eastern Wisconsin, typically served as way stations for the Scandinavians who came later, staying near the Great Lakes for shorter or longer periods of time before moving westward where more favorable conditions beckoned. It is in this connection one finds the nominal beginnings of a Danish presence in the prairie states, the region of the country most favored by the somewhat more than three hundred thousand …

In Memoriam Michael Hoffman (+1908), Christian B. Hoffman

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Michael Hoffman was born at Altendorf, Canton St. Gallen, Switzerland, on December 15, 1837. He died at his home near New Basel, Dickinson County, Kansas. It is a far reach from the mountains of the little republic to the great central plains, the very heart of the great republic. The life, the struggles and hardships, the hopes and ambitions and the accomplishments of this man are typical of the development of our country.

Rasmus Sorensen And Danish Emigration, 1847-1863, Frederick Hale Jan 1981

Rasmus Sorensen And Danish Emigration, 1847-1863, Frederick Hale

The Bridge

Probably no individual played a more seminal role in the limited Danish emigration to North America before and during the Civil War than Rasmus Sorensen. From the late 1840s until the early 1860s this author, educator, politician, and social reformer led three groups of his countrymen to Wisconsin and, through numerous booklets, speeches, and letters encouraged others to settle elsewhere in the United States and Canada. Yet Sorensen has generally been little more than a supernumerary in the historiography of this transatlantic migration. Its pioneering historian, Peter Sorensen Vig, devoted twelve pages to him in his mammoth compendium, a dozen …

Zonation Patterns In The Potholes Of Kalsow Prairie, Iowa, Jack D. Brotherson Dec 1980

Zonation Patterns In The Potholes Of Kalsow Prairie, Iowa, Jack D. Brotherson

Great Basin Naturalist

Kalsow Prairie, a mesic prairie remnant in central Iowa, was acquired by the state in 1949 and later established as a botanical reserve. This study concerns a complex of 14 potholes and adjacent drainage areas within the prairie. The potholes varied in depth and degree of fill and are thus useful in studies of plant succession. All 14 potholes exhibit zonation patterns. A total of 36 transects were taken in the various community zones. Canopy cover data were taken in every zone. The zones are ordinated into three-dimensional space as well as clustered. Interspecific association patterns are elucidated. A successional …

Flood Frequency And The Assemblage Of Dispersal Types In Hanging Gardens Of The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, George P. Malanson, Jeanne Kay Dec 1980

Flood Frequency And The Assemblage Of Dispersal Types In Hanging Gardens Of The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, George P. Malanson, Jeanne Kay

Great Basin Naturalist

Hanging gardens of the Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, are plant communities growing at permanent seeps on the canyon walls. The gardens are isolated from each other and from other plant communities by vertical expanses of sandstone. Gardens consist mostly of herbaceous species less than 1 m tall. Though not individually species-rich, the hanging gardens are diverse as a group, and very dissimilar.

This study considers two explanations of the heterogeneous distribution of species in hanging gardens. The assemblages of dispersal types in gardens of different spatial attributes and disturbance frequencies are examined. The GH statistic, a log likelihood …

The Successional Status Of Cupressus Arizonica, Albert J. Parker Sep 1980

The Successional Status Of Cupressus Arizonica, Albert J. Parker

Great Basin Naturalist

Several investigations (size-class analysis, age-determination inquiries, and germination tests) suggest that Cupressus arizonica of southeastern Arizona is a pioneer species. The tree requires disturbance to remove or reduce soil litter, which otherwise inhibits the reproduction of the species. Reduction of light intensity caused by canopy closure appears to be less important than litter accumulation in restricting C. arizonica reproduction. Following disturbance, successful establishment of seedlings may occur over an extended period (50 to 100 years), as litter gradually accumulates. The absence of C. arizonica seedlings in present populations suggest that fire suppression policies on federal lands where C. arizonica occurs …

Printed Maps Of Utah To 1900: An Annotated Cartobibliography, Riley Moore Moffat Aug 1980

Printed Maps Of Utah To 1900: An Annotated Cartobibliography, Riley Moore Moffat

Theses and Dissertations

Old maps are valuable research tools in many fields. Finding and identifying them, however, is often difficult. This annotated cartobibliography attempts to identify all maps of Utah printed before 1900. Entries give the distinguishing features, peculiarities, inaccuracies, and a general description as well as the map's provenance and citations in other lists and bibliographies.

The maps are listed chronologically and include all maps located in research collections in Utah, and in the catalogs of the Library of Congress and the Bancroft Library. Although the first entry is dated 1777, the first map of Utah made from actual observation, earlier maps …

Habitat And Plant Distributions In Hanging Gardens Of The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, George P. Malanson Jun 1980

Habitat And Plant Distributions In Hanging Gardens Of The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, George P. Malanson

Great Basin Naturalist

Hanging gardens are insular plant communities of the Colorado Plateau. This study examines hanging gardens in the Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah. The floristic similarity of gardens and the presence of species in classes of variables which characterize the habitat are disclosed. Although the gardens are isolated and dissimilar, the individual species are not restricted in the range of habitat found. Floristic dissimilarity cannot be attributed to differences in habitat. These results are compared to studies of hanging gardens in eastern Utah.

Reproduction In Three Sympatric Lizard Species From West-Central Utah, John B. Andre, James A. Macmahon

Great Basin Naturalist

Data on reproduction by the lizards Uta stansburiana, Crotaphytus collaris, and Cnemidophorus tigris are presented from a community where they are sympatric in west-central Utah. Data are compared to a previous study of these species at the same site and to data from other sites in the United States.

Some Aspects Of Succession In The Spruce-Fir Forest Zone Of Northern Utah, David J. Schimpf, Jan A. Henderson, James A. Macmahon Mar 1980

Some Aspects Of Succession In The Spruce-Fir Forest Zone Of Northern Utah, David J. Schimpf, Jan A. Henderson, James A. Macmahon

Great Basin Naturalist

A site in the Rocky Mountain subalpine forest zone with which a series of hypotheses concerning ecosystem succession was tested is characterized. Succession from herb-dominated meadows to climax forests of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir can follow at least four identified pathways. After fire, spruce and fir may reinvade a site directly, follow invasion by aspen, or follow invasion by lodgepole pine, the pathway depending on a combination of physical and biotic factors. In other cases, succession begins with long-established meadows which do not owe their existence to fire. In this latter pathway, aspen invades meadows by suckering and changes …

The East Asian Collection At The University Of North Carolina At Chapel Hill: A Description Of Its Contents Using A Sampling Technique, Edward Martinique

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Many academic collections of East Asian library material were begun less than two decades ago when the federal government enabled many universities to begin or augment educational programs in area studies. The collections acquired to serve these educational programs were subsidized with federal government monies and therefore grew fairly rapidly. The development of the East Asian collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) may be typical of many of the East Asian collections created in the early 1960's. Collecting East Asian language materials at UNC-CH began in earnest in 1964, and in the first five years …

The Diffusion And Dispersion Of The Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints: An Overview, Diane D. Peffers Jan 1980

The Diffusion And Dispersion Of The Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints: An Overview, Diane D. Peffers

Theses and Dissertations

The diffusion patterns of cultural characteristics and ideas is an area of geographic research which has gained considerable attention in recent years. This thesis is a study of the diffusion of the Reorganized Church as its members and missionaries have spread worldwide from their origins in the American Mid-West.

The slow expansion of the RLDS faith has been studied in terms of its past and present geographic locations, its pattern of movement from one place to another and its difficulties in achieving a large, international membership.

Multi-Colored Maps From False Color Separations: Kirtland Examples (1800-1900), James D. Bryan

Theses and Dissertations

Cartographers utilize primary and secondary colors in producing color maps. It is relatively easy to print the primary colors of magenta, cyan, and yellow on photo paper. It is considerably more difficult to print the secondary colors of red, blue, green, orange, purple, seagreen, and leafgreen consistently.

This thesis has solved the problem associated with producing photographic color for cartographic maps. A new system of developing color maps has been developed. This system has produced: (1) pure blacks, (2) suitable secondary colors, (3) pastel colors, and (4) mid-value and dark colors.

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank Jan 1980

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank

Theses and Dissertations

In the struggle for self-government which occupied the Mormon population of Utah between their entry into the Great Basin in 1847 and statehood in 1896, the issue of polygamy dominated public discussion. The non-Mormon population of the United States generally objected to the practice of polygamy, in large part because of Victorian attitudes towards sexual activity and the presumed physical and mental results of violating Victorian sexual norms. It was assumed by most Americans that polygamy, by violating those norms, caused real physical damage to the Latter-day Saints in Utah; damage that disqualified them from holding full and equal political …

The Educational Philosophy Of N.F.S. Grundtvig A Century Of Influence: A Case Study Of A Lutheran Congregation, Omaha, Nebraska, Ruth Thorup Herman

The Bridge

When the editor of The Bridge asked if I would write my reaction to my dissertation, I did a great deal of thinking. How would I write about my feelings which covered the four years during which I did the research and writing of this paper? I concluded that a historical review would give me the best opportunity to present my reaction to my research. Then, when he asked me to review my own study since it related my experiences, I concluded that both could be incorporated in one effort if I were permitted to make personal references.
