Greenland 1948-1985: From Reorganization To Home Rule And Beyond, Bent Thygesen Jan 1984

Greenland 1948-1985: From Reorganization To Home Rule And Beyond, Bent Thygesen

The Bridge

This article is not, strictly speaking, Danish American in content. However, Greenland has long been a concern of the United States. Secretary of State Seward who purchased Alaska from the Russians in 1867 gave some serious thought to the acquisition of Greenland also. Since the early days of World War 11, United States troops have been stationed in Greenland as part of our strategic defense system. The Danish American Heritage Society has always taken a broad view of what is Danish American, and we believe this article fits into that broad view.

Desert Rodent Adaptation And Community Structure, Michael A. Mares Aug 1983

Desert Rodent Adaptation And Community Structure, Michael A. Mares

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Desert rodent communities are compared for evidence of convergent evolution at various levels of organization, including the systemic (physiological, anatomical, etc.), autecological, and synecological. Convergence is quite pronounced at the systemic level, less pronounced at the autecological level, and even less detectable at the synecological level. This is not to imply that community convergence does not occur, but rather that our current abilities to quantify and detect convergence at the community level are rudimentary-and our data base is still far from adequate to the task of rigorously comparing community attributes. Most research on the ecology, behavior, physiology, and community structure …

Desert Rodent Populations: Factors Affecting Abundance, Distribution, And Genetic Structure, James C. Munger, Michael A. Bowers, W. Thomas Jones Aug 1983

Desert Rodent Populations: Factors Affecting Abundance, Distribution, And Genetic Structure, James C. Munger, Michael A. Bowers, W. Thomas Jones

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Literature concerning North American nocturnal desert rodents is reviewed to delimit current knowledge of the importance of various factors to abundance, distribution, and genetic structure. In addition, strategies for further study are suggested. Abundance: That increased rodent abundance often follows flushes of annual plant growth that follow favorable rains is well established. The ultimate reason for this pattern has not been established. Competition is important as well, but predation and parasitism have received little consideration. Distribution: Patterns of distribution have been shown to correspond to temperature, moisture, substrate, or vegetative parameters. An important question that remains is to …

Comparative Successional Roles Of Trembling Aspen And Lodgepole Pine In The Southern Rocky Mountains, Albert J. Parker, Kathleen C. Parker Jul 1983

Comparative Successional Roles Of Trembling Aspen And Lodgepole Pine In The Southern Rocky Mountains, Albert J. Parker, Kathleen C. Parker

Great Basin Naturalist

A review of the ecological distribution and successional roles of lodgepole pine and trembling aspen in the Southern Rocky Mountains suggests that the two species have different strategies for occupying disturbed sites. Lodgepole pine's easily dispersed seeds and faster growth from seed in unsuppressed conditions allows it to colonize severe burns, even from remote seed sources. Aspen appears to compensate for ineffective development from seed by vegetative reproduction from durable root stocks, which promotes geographic persistence. Such persistence is achieved by the maintenance of a forest structure conducive to light surface fires, which stimulate suckering and retard conifer invasion, and …

A Re-Evaluation Of The Postglacial Vegetation Of The Laramie Basin, Wyoming–Colorado, Deborah L. Elliott-Fisk, Betty S. Adkins, Jeanine L. Spaulding Jul 1983

A Re-Evaluation Of The Postglacial Vegetation Of The Laramie Basin, Wyoming–Colorado, Deborah L. Elliott-Fisk, Betty S. Adkins, Jeanine L. Spaulding

Great Basin Naturalist

Previous work by Wells in the Laramie Basin suggested that a coniferous forest/woodland covered the basin floor in the recent past (until the latest Holocene). We have found no evidence for this woodland and suggest instead that these scattered woodlands along sandstone outcrops and their immediate margins are outliers of the montane forest of the Medicine Bow Mountains, existing in their apparently anomalous locations due to favorable microenvironments set up by the topography and substrate.

Species Composition, Distribution, And Phytosociology Of Kalsow Prairie, A Mesic Tall-Grass Prairie In Iowa, Jack D. Brotherson Jan 1983

Species Composition, Distribution, And Phytosociology Of Kalsow Prairie, A Mesic Tall-Grass Prairie In Iowa, Jack D. Brotherson

Great Basin Naturalist

Species composition, distribution, and phytosociology of an 8 hectare area of tall grass prairie was intensively studied. Elevation and soils data were correlated with species distribution patterns. All species showed a response. Nine general patterns of distribution were observed in relation to elevation and soil types. Ordination and interspecific association analyses were used to identify clusters or groups of species having similar ecological amplitudes. Sporobolis heterolepis is the dominant plant of the upland prairie. The vegetation of the prairie is best described and represented by the continuum concepts of phytosociology.

A Study Of Sensitive Lands In Provo, Doris R. Monson Jan 1983

A Study Of Sensitive Lands In Provo, Doris R. Monson

Theses and Dissertations

Sensitive lands are being developed in great quantity. Because of problems caused by the development of sensitive lands, Provo City has developed land use ordinances. This thesis examines the development of Provo's ordinances along with the development of its sensitive lands. It determines ways that the city can strengthen their land use ordinances and avoid some of the problems found in sensitive land development.

Select Functions Of Price, Supply, And Demand In Market And State Economies. Study Ii, Gilbert Almquist Jan 1983

Select Functions Of Price, Supply, And Demand In Market And State Economies. Study Ii, Gilbert Almquist

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

More than any other market aspect, price has the most direct linkage to supply and demand. Suppliers make product decisions according to production costs. Consumers decide their purchases after considering prices. Most prices are not set arbitrarily. Many factors must be analyzed before proper prices are applied. For this reason, the market manager must consider pricing strategies, evaluate applicable factors, set the price, predict its effect on the market, then observe the outcomes. Sometimes the outcomes are not in accord with the predictions. Prices and their effect on market supply and demand are not absolute. There are varying aspects in …

Invertebrate Faunas And Zoogeographic Significance Of Lava Tube Caves Of Arizona And New Mexico, Stewart B. Peck Sep 1982

Invertebrate Faunas And Zoogeographic Significance Of Lava Tube Caves Of Arizona And New Mexico, Stewart B. Peck

Great Basin Naturalist

A field survey in caves near Grants, New Mexico, and Flagstaff, Arizona, found only an exceptionally poor fauna of 14 species with no strong patterns of cave restriction. The faunal poverty is judged to be correlated with and influenced by the similarly impoverished boreal forests in nearby mountains. Species of flightless arthropods, suitable for cave colonization and restricted to cool-moist litter of boreal (Hudsonian-Canadian Life Zone) forests, are apparently not now present in suitable, nearby mountain habitats. They may not have dispersed to all available montane sites from the Southern Rocky Mountains during glacial conditions. Either the forests did not …
