Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In "The Formation of the Canon of the Old Testament," in Religion and Law: Biblical, Judaic, and Islamic Perspectives, (edited by Edwin Firmage, Bernard Weiss, and John Welch and published in 1990 by Eisenbrauns), David Noel Freedman discusses the legacy of Moses and his Torah to the Western world. This legacy, he believes, is "the merger of law and religion, the inseparable joint expression of the divine will, communicated by his prophet. If true religion involves the right relationship between humanity and deity, then the law 1s the way in which that relationship is defined and regulated." Freedman concludes …

Rust of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill discusses images of eating and drinking (and the lack thereof) from the Book of Mormon and the ways in which these images are used to "define the essential nature of people, emphasize problems of survival, illustrate degradation, characterize social relationships, reinforce covenants, poetically define a hope for eternal life, and suggest a response to the book as a whole."

Assisted by a grant from the Foundation, Carl L. Johannessen, Emeritus Professor of Geography at the University of Oregon, is now in India with an assistant searching for sculptured images of sunflowers and other American crop plants. Their earlier studies documented that images of maize from the New World had been carved on temple sculptures in India dating to medieval times, centuries before the Spaniards and Portuguese could have carried the plant to Asia after A.O. 1500, as scholars commonly suppose (Johannessen and Parker, "Maize Ears Sculpted in 12th and 13th Century A.O. India as Indicators of Pre-Columbian Diffusion," Economic …

In 1982, Erich Robert Paul published an article in BYU Studies entitled "Joseph Smith and the Manchester (New York) Library." Essentially Paul shows that, while Joseph had potential access to a wide range of books there, "it is likely that during the 1820s he simply was not a part of the literary culture." This article has long been available as a F.A.R.M.S. Reprint.
