Identification of species in natural populations has recently received increased attention with a number of investigators proposing rigorous methods for species delimitation. Morphologically conservative species (or species complexes) with deep phylogenetic histories (and limited gene flow) are likely to pose particular problems when attempting to delimit species, yet this is crucial to comparative studies of the geography of speciation. We apply two methods of species delimitation to an ancient group of lizards (genus Xantusia) that occur throughout southwestern North America. Mitochondrial cytochrome b and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit 4 gene sequences were generated from samples taken throughout the geographic …

Conjoint Marital Therapy: Proxy Voice Intervention And Softening In The Context Of Couple Enactments, Ryan B. Seedall
Conjoint Marital Therapy: Proxy Voice Intervention And Softening In The Context Of Couple Enactments, Ryan B. Seedall
Theses and Dissertations
This study evaluated the effectiveness of proxy voice intervention, embedded within couple enactments, on client-perceived softening. During enactments, direct couple interaction is the focus while the therapist coaches from the periphery. In the context of an enactment, the therapist may use proxy voice when partners appear to be distressed and expressing themselves in terms of secondary emotions by modeling appropriate attachment and self-concept expression. The primary research question was whether therapist use of proxy voice in an enactment would be more likely to bring about softening effects, or whether use of proxy voice was counter-intuitive to enactment conceptualization and would …

Intermountain Freshwater Mollusks, Usa (Margaritifera, Anodonta, Gonidea, Valvata, Ferrissia): Geography, Conservation, And Fish Management Implications, Peter Hovingh
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
Field collections at more than 2900 sites and the examination of many museum collections and literature allowed me to map the historical and current distribution of several freshwater molluscan faunal groups in the Intermountain region of the United States (Great Basin, Colorado River drainage basin, and upper Snake River subbasin). Historical and current records show that Margaritifera falcata, Anodonta californiensis, and Ferrissia rivularis have drainage-specific distributions, while Valvata utahensis has a specific drainage pattern, and V. californica (new combination) has a dispersed pattern. Shell morphometric data of Valvata and Ferrissia show extensive shell variation between and within populations. Current surveys …
Cumorah's Cave, Cameron J. Packer
Cumorah's Cave, Cameron J. Packer
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The significance of the Hill Cumorah in the restoration of the gospel goes beyond its identification as the ancient repository of the metal plates known as the Book of Mormon. In the second half of the 19th century, a teaching about a cave in the hill began surfacing in the writings of several leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In their view, the hill was not only the place where Joseph Smith received the plates but also their final repository, along with other sacred treasures, after the translation was finished. This article cites ten different accounts, …

What's In A Word?: Pairs And Merisms In 3 Nephi, Cynthia L. Hallen, Josh Sorenson, Elang 324 Students
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Cynthia Hallen invited students in her History of the English Language course to search for conjoined word pairs in the scriptures as a term project. They searched for pairs of words linked with conjunctions in order to better understand the meaning of selected set expressions in the King James Bible and the Book of Mormon. Hallen summarizes and comments on their research.

What's In A Name?: The Name Cumorah, Paul Y. Hoskisson
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Unlike the case of some place-names in the Book of Mormon, the book does not explain how the land and the hill Cumorah received their designation in the Nephite record. The name Cumorah lends itself to several possible etymological explanations, which Hoskisson discusses in this article.
The Hill Cumorah Pageant: A Historical Perspective, Gerald S. Argetsinger
The Hill Cumorah Pageant: A Historical Perspective, Gerald S. Argetsinger
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Almost every summer since 1935, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has staged a pageant at the Hill Cumorah. This article starts with the history of the pageant from its beginnings in the 1920s as a Cumorah Conference of the Eastern States Mission convened by mission president B. H. Roberts and held at the Smith Family Farm. Details about the pageant’s move to the Hill Cumorah as well as scripts, directors, music, costumes, props, set design, lighting, and choreography are included. The author concludes with the details of retiring the original script after 50 years of use and …
The Geologic History Of Hill Cumorah, Michael J. Dorais
The Geologic History Of Hill Cumorah, Michael J. Dorais
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
This article discusses the geologic processes that occurred to form the Hill Cumorah and surrounding lands that would have made that area attractive to the Smith family and other early settlers and also presents reasons the hill was a suitable location for storing the golden plates for hundreds of years. The causes of glaciation, the definitions and types of glaciers, and the origin and characteristics of drumlins are explored.
“Hail, Cumorah! Silent Wonder”: Music Inspired By The Hill Cumorah, Roger L. Miller
“Hail, Cumorah! Silent Wonder”: Music Inspired By The Hill Cumorah, Roger L. Miller
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
A varied body of musical works inspired by the Hill Cumorah’s prophetic history attests to the dramatic and emotional appeal of this great landmark of Mormonism. The author surveys a variety of musical works, including compositions, anthems, hymns, oratories, plays, operas, and musicals, that show a wealth of musical potential in the Hill Cumorah’s history. Despite the variety and quality of works composed thus far, the author considers the potential largely untapped and hopes that the music of Cumorah has only just begun.

A New Beginning For The Pageant: 1948 To 1951, Harold I. Hansen
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Harold I. Hansen directed the Hill Cumorah Pageant from 1937 to 1977 (excluding the years 1943–47 when the pageant was suspended for the duration of World War II). He passed away in 1992. This article is an excerpt from his unfinished history of the pageant. His narrative includes details of his efforts to revive the pageant in 1948 and mentions the assistance of Bishop Thorpe B. Isaacson of the Presiding Bishopric, who visited the pageant in 1949. Because of his visit and recommendation to the First Presidency, the pageant was again established as an annual event and moved from an …
Designing Costumes For The Hill Cumorah Pageant, Rory R. Scanlon
Designing Costumes For The Hill Cumorah Pageant, Rory R. Scanlon
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The costume design for the Hill Cumorah Pageant reflects a strong understanding of the physical and artistic needs of the production as well as a good grasp of the historical setting of the Book of Mormon. Through a rich blending of theatrical techniques, the pageant dramatically re-creates scriptural episodes to underscore the wisdom of human agency based on moral choice—a message made poignantly relevant by the historical realism conveyed in large part by authentic costuming. This article explores the physical challenges of creating costumes for an outdoor drama and the historical research that influences the costume construction while staying true …
Archaeology And Cumorah Questions, John E. Clark
Archaeology And Cumorah Questions, John E. Clark
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The archaeology of New York—and specifically the Hill Cumorah—is persuasive evidence that Book of Mormon peoples did not live in that region. By implication, the Cumorah of the golden plates is not the Cumorah of the final battles—Mormon’s hill and Moroni’s hill are not one and the same. These conclusions follow from a few basic points and assumptions that the author explores in this article.

Theses and Dissertations
This paper uses the current organizational ecology theory to clearly define organizational population ecology constructs of non-governmental development organizations, and offers specific terminology and understanding of main organizational forms and relational dynamics that define the population ecology of these organizations. The paper examines closely the significance of such interaction and interdependence through transactional relationship of obtaining and distributing of resources and forces of competition. Original organizational theory frameworks are offered for future NGDO organizational research.
Dramaturging Education And Educating Dramaturgs: Developing And Establishing An Undergraduate Dramaturgy Emphasis For Brigham Young University, Shelley Graham
Dramaturging Education And Educating Dramaturgs: Developing And Establishing An Undergraduate Dramaturgy Emphasis For Brigham Young University, Shelley Graham
Theses and Dissertations
Though the field of dramaturgy is growing in size and scope in professional theatre, there are relatively few universities or colleges that offer undergraduate or graduate degrees in basic dramaturgical theory and practice. Brigham Young University (BYU) is an ideal setting for the development of such a program. There is a close community within and surrounding the university; the Theatre and Media Arts Department has high pedagogical expectations; and the Theatre program provides multiple opportunities for theatrical production. I saw these qualities as an invitation to develop a dramaturgy emphasis for undergraduate students that would allow them to network with …

The ancient inhabitants of the Maya Lowlands enjoyed a long and fruitful period of growth which climaxed at around AD 800. At that time, millions of people successfully subsisted in a challenging environment that today only supports a population a fraction of that size. These facts, and the subsequent "Maya Collapse", are the impetus of many recent studies that utilize environmental data, in addition to conventional archaeology, to investigate this Maya mystery. Pedological studies and stable carbon isotope analysis of soil organic matter, combined with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are three tools that can be used to answer crucial questions …

Communities, Place, And Conservation On Mount Kilimanjaro, Marie Bradshaw Durrant
Theses and Dissertations
The Chagga people have lived and worked on Mount Kilimanjaro for more than 250 years. Through traditions and social practices within their communities and families, strong bonds are established between the Chagga and their home on the mountain. Kilimanjaro National Park and Forest Reserve (KINAPA) was established in the 1970s to protect and conserve the mountain, based on a long history of colonialism and western ideals. As KINAPA has attempted to preserve the flora and fauna on the uppermost portion of Mount Kilimanjaro, they have alienated local residents from the land through a conservation approach that relies on "fences and …

Estimation Of Air Quality At Trier, Germany - A Case Study With Street 5., Jürgen Junk, Alfred Helbig
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In the course of the European Council Directive on permissible air pollutant limit values, validstarting from 2005 there is an urgent call for action, particularly for fine dust (PM10). Current investigations(Junk and Helbig 2003, Reuter and building Mueller 2003) show that the limit values in certain places incongested areas are exceeded. Only if it is possible to located these Hot Spots purposeful measures to reducethe ambient air pollution can be conducted. For an efficient identification of these Hot Spots complexcomputer models or establishing special measurements networks are to expensive. Using the statistical modelSTREET 5,0 (KTT 2003) a cost-effective screening of …

How Tight Are The Limits To Land And Water Use? – Com-Bined Impacts Of Food Demand And Climate Change, Hermann Lotze-Campen, Christoph Mülle, Alberte Bondeau, Pascalle Smith, Wolfgang Lucht
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In the coming decades, world agricultural systems will face serious transitions. Population growth, income and lifestyle changes will lead to considerable increases in food demand. Moreover, a rising demand for renewable energy and biodiversity protection may restrict the area available for food production. On the other hand, global climate change will affect production conditions, for better or worse depending on re-gional conditions. In order to simulate these combined effects consistently and in a spatially explicit way, we have linked the Lund-Potsdam-Jena Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (LPJ) with a "Management model of Agricultural Production and its Impact on the Environment" (MAgPIE). …

A Multi-Model Approach To Analysis Of Environmental Phenomena, O. Giustolisi, A. Doglioni, Dragan Savic, B. W. Webb
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper introduces a novel data-driven methodology named Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR), which permits the multi-purpose modelling of physical phenomena, through the simultaneous solution of a number of models. Multipurpose modelling or “multi-modelling”, enables the user to make a more robust choice of those models aimed at (a) the knowledge based on data modelling, (b) on-line and offline forecasting, and (c) data augmentation (i.e. infilling of missing data in time series). This methodology is particularly useful in modelling environmental phenomena, for which it is usually impossible to obtain physical data at a laboratory scale. In particular, the non-linearity of phenomena …

European Views Of Egyptian Magic And Mystery: A Cultural Context For The Magic Flute, Kerry Muhlestein
European Views Of Egyptian Magic And Mystery: A Cultural Context For The Magic Flute, Kerry Muhlestein
BYU Studies
Composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and librettist Emanuel Schikaneder lived and created during the height of eighteenth-century interest in and fascination with Egypt. The Magic Flute's Egyptial setting would therefore evoke in their contemporaneous audience notions of a distant land with an exotic and magical culture. The numerous Egyptian elements of the world are representative of its era and are situated near the end of a continuum of European thought about ancient Egypt before the solid foundation of modern day Egyptology had been laid. To Europeans, Egypt was a murky and mysterious landscape, one that easily lent itself to imaginative …
Collaborative Decision-Making Processes For Maintaining Biodiversity: Two Australian Case Studies, C. Pettit, D. Pullar
Collaborative Decision-Making Processes For Maintaining Biodiversity: Two Australian Case Studies, C. Pettit, D. Pullar
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
There have been many models developed by scientists to assist decision-makers in making socio-economic and environmental decisions. It is now recognised that there is a shift in the dominant paradigm to making decisions with stakeholders, rather than making decisions for stakeholders. Our paper investigates two case studies where group model building has been undertaken for maintaining biodiversity in Australia. The first case study focuses on preservation and management of green spaces and biodiversity in metropolitan Melbourne under the umbrella of the Melbourne 2030 planning strategy. A geographical information system is used to collate a number of spatial datasets encompassing a …
Aphid Population Dynamics In Agricultural Landscapes: An Agent-Based Simulation Model, Hazel Parry, Andrew J. Evans, Derek Morgan
Aphid Population Dynamics In Agricultural Landscapes: An Agent-Based Simulation Model, Hazel Parry, Andrew J. Evans, Derek Morgan
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Presently, there are many population models in existence, but these are often case specific, function at a single spatial scale and fail to tackle the complexity arising from individual actions andinteractions that exist in the real-world. A spatially explicit agent-based simulation model has beendeveloped to represent aphid population dynamics in agricultural landscapes. Over time, the aphid agentsinteract with the landscape and with one another. The construction of the model is detailed, includingparameterisation and coupling to a geographical information system (GIS). The results show that a spatialmodelling approach that considers both landscape properties and factors such as wind speed and directionprovides greater …
