The Mormon As Vampire: A Comparative Study Of Winifred Graham's The Love Story Of A Mormon, The Film Trapped By The Mormons, And Bram Stoker's Dracula, James V. D'Arc Apr 2007

The Mormon As Vampire: A Comparative Study Of Winifred Graham's The Love Story Of A Mormon, The Film Trapped By The Mormons, And Bram Stoker's Dracula, James V. D'Arc

BYU Studies

Between 1911 and 1926, novels and films fueled anti-Mormon sentiment in Great Britain. Winifred Graham's novel The Love Story of a Mormon portrayed a mesmerizing polygamist deceiving and enslaving girls. Later, Graham's book was made into the film Trapped by the Mormons. Both the novel and the movie drew images from vampire lore made popular by Bram Stoker's Dracula. The Mormon villain in Trapped by the Mormons has come from a faraway land, promises the possibility of eternal life, and can mesmerize victims, like Count Dracula. Though sensationalistic, the film colored British audience's perceptions of Mormon missionaries as …

Modeling Distributions Of Rare Plants In The Great Basin, Western North America, M. Aitken, D. W. Roberts, L. M. Shultz

Western North American Naturalist

In this 2-phase study, we developed field-validated site and landscape-level predictive models for identifying potential rare and endemic plant habitat in the Great Basin of western North America. Four species were chosen to include a range of environmental variability and plant communities. Herbarium records of known occurrences were used to identify initial sample sites. The geographic coordinates, environmental attributes, and vegetation data collected at each site were used to develop 2 predictive models for each species: a field key and a probability-of-occurrence or predictor map. The field key was developed using only field data collected at the sites on environmental …

A High-Resolution Microscopic Electrical Impedance Imaging Modality: Scanning Impedance Imaging, Hongze Liu Mar 2007

A High-Resolution Microscopic Electrical Impedance Imaging Modality: Scanning Impedance Imaging, Hongze Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Electrical impedance imaging is an imaging technique which has the capability of revealing the spatial distribution of the electrical impedance inside biological tissues. Classical electrical impedance imaging including Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) typically has low resolution. Advances in electrical impedance imaging typically involve methods that either increase image resolution or image contrast. This study investigates the possibility of the resolution improvement for electrical impedance imaging using motion, and presents a novel high-resolution and calibrated impedance imaging method called Scanning electrical Impedance Imaging (SII). SII uses an electrical probe held at a known voltage and scanned over a thin sample immersed …

Hidden Doublings: A Context For Understanding Jean D'Arras's Mélusine Ou La Noble Histoire De Lusignan, Kathryn Rimmasch Feb 2007

Hidden Doublings: A Context For Understanding Jean D'Arras's Mélusine Ou La Noble Histoire De Lusignan, Kathryn Rimmasch

Theses and Dissertations

At the end of the fourteenth century Jean d’Arras rewrote a popular folktale. The tale told how Mélusine, a fairy who was serpent from the navel down every Saturday, married a knight and founded the fortress of Lusignan. In his introduction to the tale Jean d’Arras presents the ideas of four authority figures to convince the reader that fantastical things are possible and that his work should be taken seriously. These authority figures are David, Aristotle, Paul and Gervaise de Tilbury. It is the contention of this thesis that Jean d’Arras presents these figures in his introduction to provide context …

Water In Beaver Dam Wash And Lytle Preserve, Stanley L. Welsh Feb 2007

Water In Beaver Dam Wash And Lytle Preserve, Stanley L. Welsh

Books by Faculty of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

This short work is derived from a manuscript prepared for presentation in a water adjudication hearing, following a proposal to pipe water from wells in Beaver Dam Wash for transfer across state lines to be used for culinary and other purposes in Mesquite, Nevada. The Wash is estimated to yield 2000 acre feet of water annually, mostly as subsurface flow, at the Arizona line. About a third of that amount is already appropriated by users along the Wash in Utah, but there are applications pending for more than 100,000 acre feet in Utah. Thus, the Wash is already oversubscribed by …

The Conversion Of Oliver Cowdery, Larry E. Morris Jan 2007

The Conversion Of Oliver Cowdery, Larry E. Morris

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Shortly after arriving in New York and beginning employment as a schoolteacher in 1828, Oliver Cowdery first learned about Joseph Smith and the gold plates through rumors and gossip. Through the sincere investigations of Oliver and his newfound friend, David Whitmer, and his time as a boarder with the Joseph Smith family in Palmyra, Oliver continued to learn about Joseph and the plates. He received a personal witness and traveled with Samuel Smith to visit Joseph in Harmony. Several events involving Martin Harris, David Whitmer, Joseph Knight Sr., and the Smith family all played a role in Oliver’s conversion, and …

The Hunt For The Valley Of Lemuel, S. Kent Brown Jan 2007

The Hunt For The Valley Of Lemuel, S. Kent Brown

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

A canyon in northwestern Arabia, Wadi Tayyib al-Ism, appears to be a strong candidate for the Valley of Lemuel in the Book of Mormon. Although its rare year-round stream seems to confirm this site as the valley, other locations must be considered. Brown gives arguments both in favor of and against three other propositions, all of which are within a few dozen miles of Wadi Tayyib al-Ism. The aspects of the river and the Red Sea, the drainage areas of wadis, and the character of the valley are all evaluated. Despite his one serious objection to Wadi Tayyib al-Ism—the difficulty …

An Interface Of Drainage Division For Modeling Wetlands And Riparian Buffers In Agricultural Watersheds Jan 2007

An Interface Of Drainage Division For Modeling Wetlands And Riparian Buffers In Agricultural Watersheds

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

In a complex watershed, isolated wetlands, riparian wetlands and riparian buffers provide important functions such as flood attenuation and water quality improvement. For conservation purposes, it is critical to properly delineate drainage areas for these features such that their impacts on runoff, sediment and pollutant transport can be reasonably simulated. However, traditional methods for watershed delineation typically fill depressions or ignore riparian features in order to maintain the continuity of surface flow pattern. In this study we develop an ArcView geographic information system (GIS) interface for watershed delineation that accounts for wetlands and riparian buffers. Based on digital elevation model …

Estimating Land-Use Change Impacts On Direct Runoff And Non-Point Source Pollutant Loads In The Richland Creek Basin (Illinois, Usa) By Applying The L-Thia Model Jan 2007

Estimating Land-Use Change Impacts On Direct Runoff And Non-Point Source Pollutant Loads In The Richland Creek Basin (Illinois, Usa) By Applying The L-Thia Model

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

An export coefficient approach to hydrological and non-point source (NPS) pollution modeling enables quick and simple assessment of long-term impacts for planning purposes. An export coefficient and geographic information system based L-THIA (Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment) model was applied to the Richland Creek basin (Illinois, USA) to assess the impacts of future urban growth on direct runoff, NPS total nitrogen (TN), total suspended particles (TSP), and total phosphorous (TP) loads. The model predicted that mean annual direct runoff and TSP loading would increase by around 7% and 4% respectively by 2030 with moderate and rapid urban growth simulated by a …

Spatial Variability And Prediction Modeling Of Groundwater Arsenic Distributions In The Shallowest Alluvial Aquifers In Bangladesh Jan 2007

Spatial Variability And Prediction Modeling Of Groundwater Arsenic Distributions In The Shallowest Alluvial Aquifers In Bangladesh

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Elevated arsenic in groundwater is the greatest environmental problem in Bangladesh. Spatial variability of arsenic in groundwater has been examined by semivariogram analysis that revealed high degree of small-scale spatial variability in alluvial aquifers. Small-scale variability of arsenic concentrations, indicated by high “nugget” values in semivariograms, is associated with heterogeneity in local-scale geology and geochemical processes. In unsampled locations, arsenic concentrations have been predicted using both deterministic and stochastic prediction methods. Natural neighbor (NN) method predicted better than inverse distance to power (IDP) method, and small-scale variations of arsenic concentrations are preserved. Ordinary kriging (OK) method on the untransformed arsenic …

On The Trail Of The Twentieth-Century Mormon Outmigration, G. Wesley Johnson, Marian Ashby Johnson Jan 2007

On The Trail Of The Twentieth-Century Mormon Outmigration, G. Wesley Johnson, Marian Ashby Johnson

BYU Studies

This article gives an overview of a major history research project that is now coming to a close after twenty years of activity. It is the Mormon Outmigration Leadership History Project, sponsored by the Marriott School of Management. Its focus has been to study the great urban outmigration of the twentieth century, as members of the Latter-day Saint community moved from traditional Mormon lands to all four corners of the United States in search of employment and education. The project has compiled in-depth case studies of individuals and families who migrated to twenty “target cities” across the nation (table 1). …

North American Species Of Astragalus Linnaeus (Leguminosae): A Taxonomic Revision, Stanley L. Welsh Jan 2007

North American Species Of Astragalus Linnaeus (Leguminosae): A Taxonomic Revision, Stanley L. Welsh

Books by Faculty of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

Abstract

This summary revision of the species of Astragalus in North America, north of Mexico, was initially prepared for inclusion in the Flora North America Project. That publication has been postponed indefinitely, and this paper is being presented now to allow those students of the genus with an updated manuscript to review, and to use prior to appearance of the Flora North America treatment. It differs from the Flora North America format in having bibliographic citations to the synonyms, and the type specimens are cited. The present work treats 354 species; 198 varieties; 552 total taxa. Should the 4 7 …

This Is The Right Place: Community-Based Art Education At Utah's Springville Museum Of Art, Mark Graham, Sharon R. Gray

Faculty Publications

The human condition in the post-modern world is increasingly nomadic. A sense of displacement and alienation is pervasive. Schools emphasize abstracted knowledge removed from the experience of students. Many people feel detached from the places where they live and have no particular sense of belonging or responsibility toward their communities. Museums can counter this pervasive restlessness and be a powerful source of community renewal. This article draws connections between place-based education theory and the educational mission of the art museum, as illustrated by the Springville Museum of Art. The small town of Springville, Utah enjoys an unparalleled connection with its …

Market Research Report For The Boy Scouts Of America, Aubrey Janzen, Crissi Farnworth, Michelle Mower, Elise Briggs

Student Works

Recommendations have been made throughout this paper, but in summary, Beaver High Adventure Base should do the following: First, an increase in marketing efforts should be directed toward the Scouts and Scoutmasters who are already involved in other Scouting activities. These are the easiest to reach and the most likely to attend high adventure camps. These efforts should emphasize the factors that are most important to the audience-they want to know they are going to have a great time because there is a variety of activities offered that have been purposefully planned to benefit the Scouts. Just mention shooting something, …
