The Effects Of Migration On Salvadoran Families, Teresa Gomez, Dr. Matthew Shumway
The Effects Of Migration On Salvadoran Families, Teresa Gomez, Dr. Matthew Shumway
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The results of our research were presented on April 14th at the Annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers in the “Immigrants in the USA” session. The presentation was successful. Afterward presenting, we had the opportunity to talk with other professors studying migration that were interested in our research.
All Animals Will Get Along In Heaven, Camila Nagata
All Animals Will Get Along In Heaven, Camila Nagata
Theses and Dissertations
My final thesis exhibition is directed towards children and parents. My goal is to create a connection between parent and child, and their past, present, and future through memory. Such a connection is accomplished through the implementation of these three different ideas in the artwork: 1) creating different layers of understanding, 2) producing everlasting memories, 3) connecting adult viewers to their past. In addition, I use principles as the foundation for each piece, such as the principles of kindness and learning. These principles are presented to the viewer through parables of current social and political issues, illustrated through my own …
Russian Attitudes Toward Us Foreign Policy: From The Cold War To Today, Kelsey Simons, Dr. Tony Brown
Russian Attitudes Toward Us Foreign Policy: From The Cold War To Today, Kelsey Simons, Dr. Tony Brown
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In matters of international politics today, Russia is the wildcard. Its history of power on the international stage, along with an impressive military and large sphere of influence give it a commanding presence, even as it still struggles to find its identity after a swift political and economic change following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is increasingly important to pay attention to Russia, and therefore it is equally important to know the standing the US has in that country. There is no doubt that the US has had a major impact on Russia in the last twenty years. …
Millenniums And Messiahs: Literature Review In Messianic Religions In Context Of The Hmong Diaspora, John Whitton, Dr. Joacob Hickman
Millenniums And Messiahs: Literature Review In Messianic Religions In Context Of The Hmong Diaspora, John Whitton, Dr. Joacob Hickman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Initially, the research proposed consisted of two sections constituting the last two semesters of my undergraduate education. The first included collecting published sources regarding millenarianism and messianism within the larger global context and organizing them into a database. The second included systematically cataloging each source in the database for future analysis, not only for Dr. Hickman’s personal use but also for the larger academic and professional community. These circles will encompass the study of nationalism, religion, globalization, and in Dr. Hickman’s specific use, the Hmong diaspora and generational views of morality.
Division Of Labor And Marital Satisfaction In China And Taiwan, Bryan C. Kubricht
Division Of Labor And Marital Satisfaction In China And Taiwan, Bryan C. Kubricht
Theses and Dissertations
There is evidence that household division of labor is associated with marital satisfaction among Chinese populations. However, little research has compared different Chinese societies, as well as non-rural and rural regions. This study compared the division of household labor, and its association with marital satisfaction, between China and Taiwan, between non-rural and rural regions, and between males and females using data from a large, multinational study of countries in East Asia. The moderating effect of gender role ideology was examined as a potential moderating variable, as well. Overall, division of household labor was significantly associated with marital satisfaction. However, gender …

Medusahead Invasion Along Unimproved Roads, Animal Trails, And Random Transects, Kirk W. Davies, Aleta M. Nafus, Matthew D. Madsen
Medusahead Invasion Along Unimproved Roads, Animal Trails, And Random Transects, Kirk W. Davies, Aleta M. Nafus, Matthew D. Madsen
Western North American Naturalist
Medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae [L.] Nevski), an exotic annual grass, is rapidly spreading and causing ecological damage across the western United States. Because this exotic plant occupies vast areas and because management resources are limited, it is critical that land managers prioritize where they direct treatment and monitoring efforts. Identifying where and by what means medusahead is spreading could provide valuable information to assist in determining where prevention and control efforts should be applied. We compared medusahead invasion levels along unimproved roads, animal trails, and random transects at 6 sites in southeastern Oregon to determine where medusahead was more common …
Do You Know How To Dance?: Mediating Identity Through Film And Dance In Visakhapatnam, India, Kaitlin Patterson, Dr. Charles Nuckolls
Do You Know How To Dance?: Mediating Identity Through Film And Dance In Visakhapatnam, India, Kaitlin Patterson, Dr. Charles Nuckolls
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I went to India to study gender relations in the family, but as I spent more time there I came to know a group of striking individuals and instead focused my research on a similar topic, film as a mediator of culture, but in this case a mediator for the deaf. The Omkar and Lions School for the Deaf (OLSD) looks out onto the bright blue bay of Visakhapatnam, India. Despite the beautiful view, the students rarely spend time in the water; their time is consumed with other things. They have school to go to, homework to complete, temple to …
The Picky Eater Premium?: The Effect Of Product Portfolio Size On The Price Consumers Pay For Fresh Produce, Wayne Sandholtz, Dr. Joseph Price
The Picky Eater Premium?: The Effect Of Product Portfolio Size On The Price Consumers Pay For Fresh Produce, Wayne Sandholtz, Dr. Joseph Price
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this project was to examine whether consumers who buy a wider variety of distinct fresh fruits and vegetables pay lower average prices for fresh fruits and vegetables, by substituting away from fruits and vegetables during price shocks. In order to answer this question, I used Nielsen Homescan data, which records all grocery purchases of a nationally representative sample of households. Using regression analysis, I found little direct evidence that households which buy a wider variety of fresh fruits and vegetables pay lower prices for them. In fact, I was surprised to find that in general, higher-variety household …
Dendroclimatology And Streamflow In Utah County, Nathan Gill, Dr. Matthew Bekker
Dendroclimatology And Streamflow In Utah County, Nathan Gill, Dr. Matthew Bekker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This study was the first step in a larger effort by the Wasatch Dendroclimatology Research (WADR) group, consisting of researchers at Brigham Young University and Utah State University, to develop a better understanding of hydroclimatology in northern Utah. Our specific goals were to develop preliminary reconstructions of streamflow beyond the historical record for the Provo and Weber Rivers and Big Cottonwood Creek, all important contributors to the water resources of the heavily urbanized Wasatch Front.
La Photographie De Rue: The Changed Face Of Doisneau’S Paris, Sarah Carrigan, Dr. James Swensen
La Photographie De Rue: The Changed Face Of Doisneau’S Paris, Sarah Carrigan, Dr. James Swensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I suppose it all started in a textbook. Perhaps this shouldn’t be surprising, but as one who generally avoids superfluous bouts of academic reading, I’m still in a fair amount of awe that this project ever got dreamt up in the first place. Yet how could I resist the delightfully amiable photograph of an old man whose eyes were filled with light and mischief flirting with me from the introduction of my Art History 379 book? A man whom the author took so much care to mention with a tone of distinct fondness despite the fact that there was no …
Gender And The Hindsight Bias: An Economic Experiment, Jacqueline Andros, Dr. Joseph Price
Gender And The Hindsight Bias: An Economic Experiment, Jacqueline Andros, Dr. Joseph Price
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Hindsight bias, or the psychological tendency to think that we “knew it all along,” has been studied for over fifty years but no study has yet thoroughly documented the specific role that gender plays in an individual’s susceptibility to this effect. This is somewhat surprising, since the existing literature on gender differences in other potentially related respects, such as competitiveness and overconfidence, is extensive. I conducted a questionnaire-based behavioral experiment to test two hypotheses: first, that male subjects are more prone to hindsight bias than female subjects; and second, that male subjects are better at correcting for their personal level …
The Relationship Between Urban Leaf Area And Summertime Household Energy Usage In Provo, Jacob Adams, Dr. Ryan Jensen
The Relationship Between Urban Leaf Area And Summertime Household Energy Usage In Provo, Jacob Adams, Dr. Ryan Jensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of our study is to investigate the relationship between urban leaf area, estimated through remote sensing, and household energy usage in the city of Provo, Utah. Anecdotal evidence indicates that trees provide cooling in the summer by shading homes, which reduces the need for air conditioning and the amount of electricity used. This study will attempt to determine this decrease of energy usage based on varying amounts of tree cover as measured by the Leaf Area Index (LAI) obtained from a satellite image. We expect that LAI and household energy consumption will be negatively correlated— as LAI increases, …
Choosing Not To Believe: Realistic Unrealism In The Winter's Tale, Rachel Olson
Choosing Not To Believe: Realistic Unrealism In The Winter's Tale, Rachel Olson
Student Works
The romantic elements of mixing genres and the influence of the supernatural within Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale have led to the critics' rejection of the play. Leontes's, the tragic hero's, interaction with the oracle in the play thus becomes a metaphor for this rejection, as it is a rejection seemingly based on a desire for realism. In reality, it is a rejection predicated on an inability to recognize that the romantic elements of the play are in fact what makes it realistic, a belief that is essential to understanding and appreciating the message of the play. The mishmash of genres …

Historical Context Of The Doctrine And Covenants And Other Modern Scriptures, Volume 1, Kurt Elieson, J. B. Haws
Historical Context Of The Doctrine And Covenants And Other Modern Scriptures, Volume 1, Kurt Elieson, J. B. Haws
BYU Studies
Kurt Elieson's Historical Context of the Doctrine and Covenants and Other Modern Scriptures is a nice self-published surprise. Elieson, a Texas attorney, saw a hole in the corpus of Doctrine and Covenants commentaries and study guides, and he aimed to fill it. He has succeeded on several fronts.
...Elieson has woven together in one helpful book an up-to-date and remarkably thorough collection of diary accounts and documentary evidence to give depth and context to the story of the receipt (and, importantly, the early circulation) of Joseph Smith's revelations. Because of that, Elieson's book should earn a place on many desks …

Blogging In Defense Of Themselves: Social Media Implications For Rhetorical Criticism And The Genre Of Apologia, Ramona Dee Wheeler
Blogging In Defense Of Themselves: Social Media Implications For Rhetorical Criticism And The Genre Of Apologia, Ramona Dee Wheeler
Theses and Dissertations
The advent of social media has provided an arena where barriers to entry are low. Individuals may persuade, question others and defend both their philosophies and their actions. This study examines the classic role of rhetorical criticism as it may apply in new media venues. A blog written by a public figure was examined through a synthesis of rhetorical criticism analyses derived from Ware and Linkugel, Vartabedian, and Downey. Four strategies and associated positioning in the practice of apologia were identified in selected blog posts, indicating the genre of apologia applies to social media apologies and extends the genre of …
Application Of Genome Reduction, Next Generation Sequencing, And Kaspar Genotyping In Development, Characterization, And Linkage Mapping Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In The Grain Amaranths And Quinoa, Scott Matthew Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The grain amaranths (Amaranthus sp.) and quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) are important seed crops in South America. These crops have gained international attention in recent years for their nutritional quality and tolerance to abiotic stress. We report the identification and development of functional single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) assays for both amaranth and quinoa. SNPs were identified using a genome reduction protocol and next generation sequencing. SNP assays are based on KASPar genotyping chemistry and were detected using the Fluidigm dynamic array platform. A diversity screen consisting of 41 amaranth accessions showed that the minor allele frequency (MAF) of the amaranth …
Location-Allocation Optimization Of Supply Chain Distribution Networks: A Case Study, Mark Nicholas Helberg
Location-Allocation Optimization Of Supply Chain Distribution Networks: A Case Study, Mark Nicholas Helberg
Theses and Dissertations
The location of distribution centers is an important strategic decision in supply chain design, particularly as it relates to service quality, productivity, and profitability of the firm. There has been extensive research performed on distribution location models which require the use of complex algorithms and assumptions that make use of these models difficult in practice for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that have limited capital and resources. Studies have also failed to capture and quantify potential business results of using more sophisticated methods. In this study, a deterministic and static location-allocation model is designed using a prototype software tool. The …
Translation As Katabasis And Nekyia In Seamus Heaney's "The Riverbank Field", Gerrit Van Dyk
Translation As Katabasis And Nekyia In Seamus Heaney's "The Riverbank Field", Gerrit Van Dyk
Theses and Dissertations
Translation has been at the heart of Seamus Heaney's career. In his poem, "The Riverbank Field," from his latest collection, Human Chain, Heaney engages in metatranslation, "Ask me to translate what Loeb gives as / 'In a retired vale...a sequestered grove' / And I'll confound the Lethe in Moyola." Curiously, with a broad spectrum of classical works at his disposal, the poet chooses a particular moment in Virgil's Aeneid as an image for translation. What is it about this conversation between Aeneas and his dead father, Anchises, at the banks of the Lethe which makes it uniquely fitting for …
From No Man's Land To The Mosaic Floor: An Autobiographical Sketch Of A "Secunda'', Lorena Gulino
From No Man's Land To The Mosaic Floor: An Autobiographical Sketch Of A "Secunda'', Lorena Gulino
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Biography doesn't have to follow the time line-I know that as a cultural anthropologist. And I also know that we read the past through the lens of the present and that its construction is but one version of possible realities having the imprint of personal vision. Understanding is shaped further by the moment and formed by social surroundings. An anecdote will highlight these opening thoughts.
Joseph Smith, The Times And Seasons, And Central American Ruins, Matthew Roper, Paul J. Fields, Atul Nepal
Joseph Smith, The Times And Seasons, And Central American Ruins, Matthew Roper, Paul J. Fields, Atul Nepal
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
During the time the Latter-day Saints lived in Nauvoo, John Stephens and Frederick Catherwood published Incidents of Travel in Central America, an illustrated report of the first discovery of ancient ruins in Central America by explorers. These discoveries caused great excitement among the Saints, and subsequently five editorials appeared in the Times and Seasons commenting on what these meant for the church. Although the author of the editorials was not indicated, historians have wondered if Joseph Smith penned them since he was the newspaper’s editor at the time. We examined the historical evidence surrounding the editorials and conducted a detailed …
How Much Weight Can A Single Source Bear? The Case Of Samuel D. Tyler's Journal Entry, Matthew Roper
How Much Weight Can A Single Source Bear? The Case Of Samuel D. Tyler's Journal Entry, Matthew Roper
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
In 1838 a group of Latter-day Sints passed through Randolph County, Missouri, on their way to join the Sains at Far West. A journal entry by Samuel D. Tyler, a member of the church who traveled with this group, has led some students of the Book of Mormon to conclude that the Prophet Joseph Smith revealed the location of the ancient city of Manti spoken of in the Book of Mormon. A careful examination of the Tyler journal an dother historical sources suggests that this conclusion is unwarranted.
Letter To A Doubter, Terryl Givens
Letter To A Doubter, Terryl Givens
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
I understand that some doubts have arisen in your mind. I don’t know for sure what they are, but I imagine I have heard them before. Probably I have entertained some of them in my own mind. And perhaps I still harbor some of them myself. I am not going to respond to them in the ways that you may have anticipated. Oh, I will say a few things about why many doubts felt by the previously faithful and faith-filled are ill-founded and misplaced: the result of poor teaching, naïve assumptions, cultural pressures, and outright false doctrines. But my main …
