Biogeography Of Ammophila (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) In The Grand Canyon Ecoregion, Southwestern Usa, Lawrence E. Stevens, Arnold S. Menke
Biogeography Of Ammophila (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) In The Grand Canyon Ecoregion, Southwestern Usa, Lawrence E. Stevens, Arnold S. Menke
Western North American Naturalist
We compiled distribution data on Ammophila collected in the Grand Canyon ecoregion (GCE) in northern Arizona and southern Utah. We report 35 species occurring from 350 to 2865 m elevation. Three new state records are reported for Arizona and one for Utah. A total of 73.8%–80.5% of the 41 Arizona Ammophila species occur in the GCE, and 16 species were detected in Grand Canyon National Park. Four species in Utah’s portion of the GCE are not known to occur in Arizona. Five Ammophila species were frequently captured (A. azteca, A. pruinosa complex, A. breviceps, A. acuta, and A. strenua …
Regional Branching Relationships In Carnegiea Gigantea, A Keystone Cactus, Taly Dawn Drezner
Regional Branching Relationships In Carnegiea Gigantea, A Keystone Cactus, Taly Dawn Drezner
Western North American Naturalist
The large columnar cactus Carnegiea gigantea branches to increase reproductive output. The branches of this keystone species also provide shelter to a large portion of the Sonoran Desert’s fauna. In this study, branch length was used to reconstruct branch establishment at 2 populations to determine branching patterns over time and the relationship across populations. Branches showed high establishment but relatively low survival. Either more branches establish than eventually survive or growth is slow when branches are smaller, thereby biasing the distribution of lengths due to the differences in growth rate. Also, the distribution of branch lengths (i.e., branch generation over …
North Versus South: The Effects Of Foreign Direct Investment And Historical Legacies On Poverty Reduction In Post-Đổi Mới Vietnam, Scott R. Sanders
North Versus South: The Effects Of Foreign Direct Investment And Historical Legacies On Poverty Reduction In Post-Đổi Mới Vietnam, Scott R. Sanders
Faculty Publications
This research examines the factors that account for variance in provincial poverty reduction rates between 2002 and 2008 in Vietnam. In particular, this paper uses spatial regression modeling to show that foreign direct investment (FDI) and the capitalist legacies of southern Vietnam significantly affected provincial poverty reduction during this time period. These findings suggest that although Vietnam as a whole has benefited from post-Đổi Mới economic reform and FDI, the historical capitalist legacies of the former Republic of Vietnam played a strong role in aiding provinces in the south in attracting FDI and subsequently reducing provincial poverty.

Documenting The Paleontological Resources Of National Park Service Areas Of The Southern California Coast And Islands, Justin S. Tweet, Vincent L. Santucci, Tim Connors
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
Paleontological resource inventories for the parks of the National Park Service’s Mediterranean Coast Inventory and Monitoring Network (MEDN) indicate a significant Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic fossil record for the southern California coast and islands. These inventories document over 100 million years of biologic and geologic changes along the Pacific coast of southern California. During 2012, comprehensive paleontological resource data were compiled for Cabrillo National Monument (CABR), Channel Islands National Park (CHIS), and Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SAMO). This recent work expands the paleontological resource data previously compiled for each of the parks in 2003 and during the SAMO …
Defining The Historic Landscape On Eastern Santa Rosa Island: Archaeological Investigations At Qshiwqshiw, Todd J. Braje, Torben C. Rick, Leslie Reeder-Myers, Breana Campbell, Kelly Minas
Defining The Historic Landscape On Eastern Santa Rosa Island: Archaeological Investigations At Qshiwqshiw, Todd J. Braje, Torben C. Rick, Leslie Reeder-Myers, Breana Campbell, Kelly Minas
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
The Chumash village of Qshiwqshiw, located on eastern Santa Rosa Island, is described in ethnographic sources as one of the largest Chumash villages on the northern Channel Islands, with 4 chiefs and 119 baptisms according to mission records. The village is thought to correlate with 2 archaeological sites (CA-SRI-85 and CA-SRI-87) that contain large and dense shell-midden deposits. Despite the importance of these sites for helping understand Late (650–168 cal BP) and Historic (AD 1769–1830) Period Chumash lifeways, only limited surface collections, one small column sample, and 4 radiocarbon dates were previously available, leaving unanswered important questions about the chronology …

Doctrine & Covenants Section 89 is known as the "health code" for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In verse 13 of this scripture, the Lord states, “it is pleasing unto me that they [flesh of beasts and fowls of the air] should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine” (D&C 89:13). Judging from the variety of interpretations this single verse has inspired, it would appear to be deeply enigmatic. Interestingly, most interpretations have been put forward with little supporting evidence. This article is the first comprehensive analysis of the …
Echoes Of Peace: Anti-War Sentiment In The Iliad And Heike Monogatari And Its Manifestation In Dramatic Tradition, Tyler A. Creer
Echoes Of Peace: Anti-War Sentiment In The Iliad And Heike Monogatari And Its Manifestation In Dramatic Tradition, Tyler A. Creer
Theses and Dissertations
The Iliad and Heike monogatari are each seen as seminal pieces of literature in Greek and Japanese culture respectively. Both works depict famous wars from which subsequent generations of warriors, poets, and other artists in each society drew their inspiration for their own modes of conduct and creation. While neither work is emphatically pro-war, both were used extensively by the warrior classes of both cultures to reinforce warrior culture and to inculcate proper battlefield behavior. In spite of this, however, both tales contain a strong undercurrent of anti-war sentiment which contrasts sharply with their traditionally seen roles of being tales …

An Application Of Geographical And Statistical Linked Data To Ecology: The Brazilian Cerrado Ontology Network And Qualitative Reasoning Models, Adriano Souza, Oscar Corcho, Paulo Salles, Luis Vilches-Blázquez
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This work aims to link data about wood plant communities obtained from scientific studies about the Brazilian Cerrado biome, meteorological and environmental data, geographical information (maps) and Qualitative Reasoning (QR) conceptual models. An ontology network was developed in order to integrate data from different sources. Data Cube, AEMET, GeoSPARQL, and Time ontologies and QR formalism were used as general ontologies. In addition, two domain ontologies--Cerrado Concepts and Wood Plant Dynamics Ontology (Ccon) and Fire Ontology (Fire)--were developed to represent scientific knowledge about vegetation ecology focused on vegetation dynamics under different burning regimens. Datasets provided by Brazilian geovernment agencies and those …

We report on agent-based modelling work in the LOCAW project (Low Carbon at Work: Modelling Agents and Organisations to Achieve Transition to a Low Carbon Europe). The project explored the effectiveness of various backcasting scenarios conducted with case study organisations in bringing about pro-environmental change in the workforce in the domains of transport, energy use and waste. The model used qualitative representations of workspaces in formalising each scenario, and decision trees learned from questionnaire responses to represent decision-making. We describe the process by which the decision trees were constructed, noting that the use of decision trees in agent-based models requires …

"Make Them Pay": Charting The Social Topography Of An Old Assyrian Caravan Cycle, Edward P. Stratford
Faculty Publications
With one foot on the Tigris and the other on the Anatolian plateau, Assyrian merchants conducted a brisk trade in tin, textiles, and silver in the late twentieth and early nineteenth centuries BCE. The structural aspects of the shipment and sale of tin and textiles in exchange for silver in caravan cycles have been the subjects of many excellent studies with methodologies including lexical studies and text-type studies. In addition, archival studies have been helpful in giving a sense of the variety of organization and involvement in the trade among different individuals. However, approaches that focus on structural activities like …

Presence Of The Exotic Weevil (Rhinocyllus Conicus Fröelich) At High Elevations In The Rocky Mountains Of Colorado, Julia J. Hicks, Susan W. Beatty, Timothy R. Seastedt
Western North American Naturalist
We examined the presence of the exotic weevil Rhinocyllus conicus Fröelich on native thistles at high elevations in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. We tested whether the distribution of R. conicus was related to elevation by performing 2 separate studies. First, transects along an elevation gradient were sampled in Rocky Mountain National Park and presence/absence of R. conicus was scored to infer relationships between environmental variables and weevil occurrence. Second, an experiment was conducted on Niwot Ridge to determine whether weevils were able to complete their reproductive cycle and overwinter at an elevation where they do not currently exist. Results …

Phylogeography Of The Scaled Quail In The American Southwest, Damon Williford, Randy W. Deyoung, Rodney L. Honeycutt, Leonard A. Brennan, Fidel Hernández
Western North American Naturalist
We used sequences from the mitochondrial control region to examine the phylogeography and historical demography of the Scaled Quail and to determine whether the geographic distributions of mtDNA genealogy were concordant with the distribution of the subspecies. Overall, the Scaled Quail exhibited lower haplotype and nucleotide diversity than other quail species. The highest levels of haplotype diversity were found in 3 Texas counties: Dimmit, La Salle, and Hudspeth. The Scaled Quail exhibited no phylogeographic structure among its 16 haplotypes, and the patterns of genetic variation were not congruent with potential geographic barriers or current subspecies taxonomy. The geographic distribution of …
Questioning The Comma In Verse 13 Of The Word Of Wisdom, A. Jane Birch
Questioning The Comma In Verse 13 Of The Word Of Wisdom, A. Jane Birch
Faculty Publications
The 1921 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants included an additional comma, which was inserted after the word “used” in D&C 89:13: “And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.” Later authors have speculated that the addition of the comma was a mistake that fundamentally changed the meaning of the verse. This article examines this “errant comma theory” and demonstrates why this particular interpretation of D&C 89:13 is without merit.
Discovering The "God Within": The Experience And Manifestation Of Emerson's Evolving Philosophy Of Intuition, Anne Tiffany Turner
Discovering The "God Within": The Experience And Manifestation Of Emerson's Evolving Philosophy Of Intuition, Anne Tiffany Turner
Theses and Dissertations
Investigating individual subjectivity, Ralph Waldo Emerson traveled to Europe following the death of his first wife, Ellen Tucker Emerson, and his resignation from the Unitarian ministry. His experience before and during the voyage contributed to the evolution of a self-intuitive philosophy, termed selbstgefühl by the German Romantics and altered his careful style of composition and delivery to promote the integrity of individual subjectivity as the highest authority in the deduction of truth. He would use this philosophy throughout the remainder of his life to encourage his audience to experience the same process he did.

An Improved Temperature Index Model For Alpine Glaciers Using Derived Degree-Day Factors From Climatic Inputs, Durban G. Keeler, Dr. Summer Rupper
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Glaciers represent one of the most climatically sensitive and dynamic systems under study, and therefore have diverse implications for nations around the world. For example, Switzerland generates 56% of its power from hydroelectric facilities, many of them fed by glacial meltwater (SFOE, 2012). Many nations in the Himalayas are at risk of catastrophic flooding as glacial melt rates increase (Rupper et al., 2012). Attempts to comprehend past glacial changes can help us better understand modern changes in climate. The study of glacial melt rates over time therefore has potential regional and global significance.

Geomorphic Mapping And In Situ Analysis Of Avalanches On Loafer Mountain, Kimball Hansen, Dr. Matthew Bekker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The goal of this project was continue the previous avalanche chronology of Loafer Mountain that my mentor professor started and had me finish in 2011. We wanted to incorporate using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which could help us find better results for our avalanche chronology. By using a GIS we can map our samples and thus provide a more in-depth analysis of the avalanche path by providing the width and magnitude.

Religious Balance In The Middle East: A Study On How Geography Influences Christian Tolerance In The Jordan State, Conor Fishback, Dr. Chad Emmett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Recently three of Jordan’s neighboring states: Israel, Iraq, and Syria have experienced different types of large scale violence within their country. Jordan has remained relatively stable with no major violent conflicts. On October 21st 2012, the Jordanian Government announced that it had foiled a terrorist plot involving 11 Jordanians seeking to target Western interests in Amman. Even though Jordan is near the heart of the Muslim world, it has been targeted by terrorists, as if it was a Western state. This study analyzed the level of tolerance to the Christian faith inside a Muslim state according to the location of …
Correlation Between Streamflow Records In The Southern Wasatch Front, Utah And Regional Tree-Ring Chronologies, Chelsea Decker, Dr. Matthew Bekker
Correlation Between Streamflow Records In The Southern Wasatch Front, Utah And Regional Tree-Ring Chronologies, Chelsea Decker, Dr. Matthew Bekker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The arid and heavily populated Wasatch Front in Utah is dependent on streamflow from snowmelt. Historical records of streamflow go back about 100 years but this is insufficient to provide a complete picture of streamflow variability in the area. Water managers would greatly benefit from a more extensive record of streamflow in the area to adequately plan for future population growth along the Wasatch Front.

Phylogeography Of Patagonian Lizards Of The (Liolaemus Lineomaculatus Complex) Since The Last Glacial Maximum, Rachel Arendt, Dr. Jack Sites
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Patagonia is an area noted for its breathtaking natural beauty. In addition to famous mountains, waterfalls, and coastlines, it harbors a diverse array of lizards. As you walk through the deserts of Patagonia you can observe several of these lizards scampering about, and you immediately notice that many of the lizards are dissimilar. Obviously their differences have arisen due to the forces of natural selection and evolution.

From Symbolic To Social Boundaries: The Utah Minuteman Project, Keaton Robertson, Dr. Charlie Morgan
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Social movements, such as the Utah Minuteman Project (UMP) play an important role in shaping public opinion on critical immigration issues. Utah, regarded as a sanctuary state by antiillegal immigrant movements, is one of ten states that grant in-state tuition to anyone who graduates from a Utah high school without proof of residency. Furthermore, it was the first state to offer driving privilege cards to “Individuals who are unable to establish legal/lawful presence and who are ineligible for a US Social Security Number,” including undocumented immigrants. After the emergence of the Minutemen, numerous so-called “anti-immigrant” legislation has been proposed at …

Modeling Home Market Value Using Remote Sensing Vegetation Indices, Carson Stam, Dr. Ryan Jensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As the principal habitat of the human race, urban areas require a high degree of attention and research. The United Nations has estimated that slightly over 50% of the world’s population now lives in urban areas. This number is projected to increase steadily in the coming decades. The ability to understand our habitat as a species is key to understanding our future. An important component of any urban area is the urban forest. McPherson and Luttinger (1996) stated that “[r]esearch is revealing that with proper management and care, urban forests can contribute to the economic vitality and the quality of …
