An R Package For Open, Reproducible Analysis Of Urban Water Systems, With Application To Chicago, Laura E. Erban, Stephen B. Balogh, Daniel E. Campbell, Henry A. Walker
Open Water Journal
Urban water systems consist of natural and engineered flows of water interacting in complex ways. System complexity can be understood via mass conservative models that account for the interrelationships among all major flows and storages. We have developed a generic urban water system model in the R package CityWaterBalance. CityWaterBalance provides a reproducible workflow for studying urban water systems by facilitating automated retrievals of open data and post-processing with open source R functions. It allows the user to 1) rapidly assemble a quantitative, comprehensive assessment of flows thorough an urban area, and 2) easily change the spatial and temporal boundaries …

Open Hydrology Courseware Using The United States Geological Survey’S National Water Census Data Portal, Jake Nelson, Daniel P. Ames, David Blodgett
Open Water Journal
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the primary U.S. Government agency for water data collection and dissemination. In this role, the USGS has recently created and deployed a National Water Census Data Portal (NWC-DP) which provides access to streamflow, evapotransporation, precipitation, aquatic biology and other data at the national level. Recognizing the value of these data sets for hydrologic science education, this paper presents an effort to bridge the gap between pencil–and-paper-based hydrology curriculum and the USGS NWC-DP resource. Specifically, we have developed an R package, National Water Census Education (NWCEd), and five associated laboratory exercises that integrate R- and …

Investigating Rain And Temperature Changes Using Lars- Wg Models (A Case Study Of Karoon Basin)
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Long-term forecast of climatic variables to be informed about changes as well as considering necessary requirements to balance consequences due to climate change has been considered by researchers and climatologists. LARS-WG is a model downscaling the outputs of GCM models. In the present research, to generate the amount of daily rainfall, radiation, daily minimum and maximum temperatures have been employed in four stations under present and future climatic conditions. In the research, the capability of LARS-WG model to simulate data observed in four stations of Ahwaz, Dezfoul, Shahr-e-Kord, and Yasouj was evaluated. After ensuring about appropriate performance of the model, …

Review Of Natural Born Seer: Joseph Smith, American Prophet, 1805–1830, By Richard S. Van Wagoner, Mark Ashurst-Mcgee, Mark L. Staker
Mormon Studies Review
Around the turn of the century, Signature Books planned a series of three volumes that would cover Joseph Smith’s life in detail. Richard S. Van Wagoner was commissioned to write the first volume of the trilogy, treating the period from Smith’s birth to his move to Ohio. Van Wagoner’s Natural Born Seer: Joseph Smith, American Prophet, 1805– 1830 engages Smith’s family and cultural background, his childhood and formative years, his visionary claims, his translation of the Book of Mormon, and the organization of the Mormon church. Much of the work of Mormon history is done by amateur scholars who contribute …

Peer Reviews And Graduate Writers: Engagements With Language And Disciplinary Differences While Responding To Writing, Kate Mangelsdorf, Todd Ruecker
Journal of Response to Writing
Although peer review as a method of writing response has been examined extensively, only limited research exists on peer review at the graduate level. This study examines graduate students’ peer review interactions in a writing workshop in which first- and second-language students from different disciplines were enrolled. The researchers focused on how students engaged with language and disciplinary differences as they peer-reviewed. Data were collected from two separate writing workshop classes over two semesters and included video recordings, observation notes, writing samples, and end-of-semester surveys. The researchers found that some students could provide only limited assistance when working with peers …

The Word Baptize In The Book Of Mormon, John Hilton Iii
The Word Baptize In The Book Of Mormon, John Hilton Iii
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The word baptize appears 119 times in the Book of Mormon; three speakers (Jesus Christ, Mormon, and Nephi) account for 87% of all of these usages. Each of these individuals have distinctive patterns in how they use the word baptize, indicating that each speaker has his own unique voice. When one accounts for the fact that Christ says relatively fewer words than Mormon, it is evident that per 1,000 words spoken, Jesus Christ uses the word baptize more than any other speaker in the Book of Mormon. This finding holds true for Christ’s words both in and outside of 3 …

Playing To An Audience: A Review Of Revelatory Events, Kevin Christensen
Playing To An Audience: A Review Of Revelatory Events, Kevin Christensen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Ann Taves’s book offers a comparative look at the origins of three groups, among them Mormonism. While she does not address the issue of competing explanations by each group about their origins or how to best navigate among them in terms that are not self-referential, that crucial circumstance is modeled by Thomas Kuhn in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. So I, too, have a pattern that applies to my arguments just as much it does to those offered by Professor Taves. Where her book attempts to solve the puzzle of Joseph Smith, my review offers a test of her rules …

Unveiling Women’S Veils Of Authority, Lynne Hilton Wilson
Unveiling Women’S Veils Of Authority, Lynne Hilton Wilson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The Apostle Paul’s theological explanation for female veil wearing (1 Corinthians 11:2–13) highlights the woman’s head covering as an expression of female empowerment or “authority/exousia.” It appears that the Corinthian saints struggled with this tradition, as Paul preceded the discussion with, “but I would have you know/thelõ de” (1 Corinthians 11:3). Rather than merely restating the dress code for certain prayers, Paul laid out the doctrinal background underlying the imagery. He began with the order of creation from the Garden of Eden. God was the “kephale,” meaning source or origin of Christ, who was the source of man, who was …
Abinadi: A Minor Prophet, A Major Contributor, Andrew C. Smith
Abinadi: A Minor Prophet, A Major Contributor, Andrew C. Smith
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The new edited volume Abinadi: He Came Among Them in Disguise, from the Book of Mormon Academy, is a valuable contribution to Book of Mormon studies. It should find a wide audience and stimulate greater and deeper thinking about the pivotal contributions of Abinadi to the Book of Mormon. It should, however, not be considered the end of the conversation. This review discusses the volume’s importance within Book of Mormon scholarship generally. It also highlights certain valuable contributions from each of the authors, and points out places where more can be said and deeper analysis is needed.
Marjorie Newton’S Account Of The Faith Of The Māori Saints: A Critical Appraisal, Louis Midgley
Marjorie Newton’S Account Of The Faith Of The Māori Saints: A Critical Appraisal, Louis Midgley
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Marjorie Newton’s Mormon and Maori is a version of her 1998 thesis in which she rejects key elements of the Māori Latter day Saint historical narrative. This contrasts with her earlier, faith affirming Tiki and Temple. In Mormon and Maori Newton targets what she sees as Māori/missionary mythology. She has written for different audiences; one was for secular religious studies scholars, while the other was for faithful Saints. Midgley rejects Newton’s claim that a Mormon American cultural imperialism requires Māori to abandon noble elements of their culture. Faithful Saints are liberated from the soul-destroying behavior that results from the loss …
The Geology Of Moroni’S Stone Box: Examining The Setting And Resources Of Palmyra, Benjamin R. Jordan, Warren P. Aston
The Geology Of Moroni’S Stone Box: Examining The Setting And Resources Of Palmyra, Benjamin R. Jordan, Warren P. Aston
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The story of Joseph Smith retrieving gold plates from a stone box on a hillside in upstate New York and translating them into the foundational text of the Restoration is well known among Latter-day Saints. While countless retellings have examined these events in considerable detail, very few have explored the geological aspects involved in this story. In particular, none have discussed in detail the geological materials that would have been required by the Nephite prophet Moroni ca. ad 421 to construct a sealed container able to protect the gold plates from the elements and from premature discovery for some fourteen …

China And The North Korean Refugee Crisis, Christina Ahn
China And The North Korean Refugee Crisis, Christina Ahn
BYU Asian Studies Student Journal
On 8 May 2002, shocking images of five North Korean refugees at a Japanese consulate in northeast China were captured. Although two members of the party—both men—successfully made it inside the consulate, two women and a child were dragged away from the gate of their safe haven by Chinese police (Gittings 2002). All five individuals were eventually detained—and though their fates remain unknown, it is likely they were immediately deported to North Korea, possibly the worst outcome for any North Korean defector.

At eighteen fate placed Ali and his family in the center of hostilities in northern Afghanistan. Warring militant factions killed hundreds of people in his village. Ali helped identify and bury dozens of his friends and neighbors in a mass grave.
We spent days and nights in the mountains and blocked on the borders. I crossed the mountainous border between Afghanistan and Pakistan walking with my handicap. Then it took us another sixteen hours to cross the border between Pakistan and Iran, also in very high mountains of more than 2500 meters. The Iranian police were killing people on the …

Comparing Book Of Mormon Names With Those Found In J.R.R. Tolkien’S Works: An Exploratory Study, Brad Wilcox, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Bruce L. Brown, Sharon Black
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The works of Tolkien and the Book of Mormon have been compared in a variety of ways by multiple authors and researchers, but none have looked specifically at the unusual names found within both. Wordprint studies are one tool used in author attribution research, but do authors use specific sounds more than others — consciously or subconsciously — when selecting or inventing names? Some research suggests they may and that their patterns could create a “sound print” or phonoprint. This constitutes a fresh and unusual path of research that deserves more attention. The purpose of this exploratory study was to …

Jeanusnat’s father, who was chief of a Nigerian community, was murdered by an enemy community. The murderer intended to kill Jeanusnat and his mother as well, but they fled to neighboring Niger. There, Jeanusnat parted ways with his mother, who stayed at the church with a family, and Jeanusnat crossed into Libya in the back of a truck. But once in Libya, danger persisted. He was confronted by some robbers who stabbed him with a knife and beat him, leaving injuries on his legs and shoulder. In Tripoli, a man offered him temporary refuge, where Jeanusnat stayed until he decided …
The Capitalization Of Consumer Financing Into Durable Goods Prices, Bronson Argyle, Taylor Nadauld, Christopher Palmer, Ryan Pratt
The Capitalization Of Consumer Financing Into Durable Goods Prices, Bronson Argyle, Taylor Nadauld, Christopher Palmer, Ryan Pratt
Faculty Publications
Using loan-level data on millions of used-car transactions across hundreds of lenders, we study the consumer response to exogenous variation in credit terms. Borrowers offered shorter maturity decrease expenditures enough to o set 60-90% of the monthly payment increase. Most of this is driven by shifting toward lower quality cars, but affected borrowers are able to o set 20-30% of a monthly payment shock by negotiating lower prices for equivalent cars. Our results suggest that durable goods prices adjust to reflect credit terms even at the individual level, with one year of additional loan maturity increasing a given car’s price …

Defining The Accessibility Of A Literary Text: Contemporary Russian Literature In A Cefr B2 Russian As A Foreign Language Classroom, Sofya Yunusova
Russian Language Journal
In the last three and a half decades, a considerable number of publications in foreign-language methodology have addressed the use of literary texts (LTs) in foreign-language classrooms. While at the beginning of the twentieth century learning a foreign language still meant a close study of canonical LTs for linguistic and humanistic purposes following the grammar-translation method (Kramsch and Kramsch 2000; Iatsenko 2017b), by the middle of the century, literature was replaced by more functional models of learning (Carter 2007). The 1980s opened new perspectives on the didactic role of L2 literary reading, which are commonly associated with the confluence of …
