Spinturnicid Mites Of Venezuela (Acarina: Spinturnicidae), C. Selby Herrin, Vernon J. Tipton

The results of an extensive survey of spinturnicid mites of bats from Venezuela are presented in this paper. Approximately 30,000 bats were collected from a wide variety of life zones and localities. A representative sample was searched for ectoparasites. There are 3 genera of the family Spinturnicidae in Venezuela: Cameronieta, Periglischrus, and Spinturnix. Three previously described species of Cameronieta were found in the Venezuelan collection. Of the 7 species of Spinturnix previously described from the New World, 4 are reported from Venezuela. The genus Periglischrus constitutes by far the most significant segment of the Venezuelan collection. It is represented by …

Benthic macroinvertebrate communities of Huntington River, Emery County, Utah were studied to determine effects of sedimentation from construction of Electric Lake Dam, a state highway, and two bridges. Approximately 900 benthic samples were collected from riffle areas above, in, and below the construction zone from January, 1971 to December, 1973. Two settling basins below construction sites were effective in limiting scouring of downstream communities. Heavy silt deposition was limited to a 1-km stream reach. Number of indicators, density, and biomass were reduced in the construction zone during periods of sediment input. During periods of scouring, density and biomass were reduced; …

A taxonomic study of the algae of Huntington canyon, Emery County, Utah, was conducted from March 1971 to April 1972. The algal flora of this cold, fast-flowing, hard-water mountain creek consisted of ninety-five genera, one hundred ninety-six species, twenty-nine varieties, and two forms. This diverse flora was dominated by many different species with usually rather few individuals of Achnanthes, Cymbella, Diatoma, Gomphonema, Lyngbya, Navicula, Nitzschia, Oscillatoria, Synedra, and Ulothrix.

Man's perception and use of his environment is greatly influenced by his culture, which consists of past experience, technology, attitudes, and needs. Fifty-three arthropod species were studied in an area affected by an underground nuclear detonation. These were represented by 10 species of ants, 17 beetles, 5 orthopterans, 4 scorpions, 6 solpugids, and 11 spiders (Table 16). Relative populations were determined prior to the detonation and at three periods after the detonation–(1) one and two months after (August and September 1962), (2) 11 months after (June 1963), and (3) 13 months after (August 1963). Incidence Of Spotted Fever In Wood Ticks Of Utah Recreational Sites, C. Selby Herrin

In 1964, 135 male and 223 female Dermacentor andersoni Stiles were collected at 48 national forest recreation areas in Utah. Using guinea pigs immunological tests were performed on each of 62 samples to determine the presence of the Rocky Mountain spotted fever rickettsia. Thirteen of the samples (21 percent) were positive. These 13 samples contained 35 males and 34 females yielding an infection rate of at least 3.6 percent, assuming one infected tick was in each sample.

A quantitative and ecological study of the algal flora of Huntington Canyon, Emery Co., Utah was conducted from March 1971 to April 1972. Data were collected concerning net plankton, nannoplankton, periphyton and visible attached algae. Certain physical and chemical parameters in the waters of Huntington Creek and a small pond along its course also were measured. The algal flora of Huntington Canyon contains a wide diversity of genera and species. Diatoms are the main constituent of the flora of this stream throughout the year. This is a review of the use of public lands in Wah Wah and Pine Valleys in western Utah for grazing of livestock, mining, and other private enterprises. The total area of the two valleys is approximately 1,440 square miles of which about 30 square miles are privately owned. From the time grazing of domestic livestock was initiated in the 1870's and 1880's until 1934, the land was free public domain and was grazed on a first-come, first-served basis. Passage of the Taylor Grazing Act in 1934 ended free use of public lands. Existing evidence indicates that by 1934 the …
