Microfabrication Of Silicon Carbide And Metallized Polymers Using A Femtosecond Laser, Joseph Taylor Eddy Jul 2023

Microfabrication Of Silicon Carbide And Metallized Polymers Using A Femtosecond Laser, Joseph Taylor Eddy

Theses and Dissertations

Femtosecond lasers deliver a high peak concentration of optical power while maintaining low average power. With an accompanying optical setup, this power can be focused and used for high-precision fabrication of metallized polymers via ablation, creating conductive structures on a thin film. These lasers can also be harnessed in tandem with hydrofluoric acid and the two-photon absorption principle to selectively etch silicon carbide, a very durable and machining-resistant semiconductor with desirable properties. This thesis presents improvements made to the Laser-Assisted Chemical Etching (LACE) technique and the ablation system. , the two- photon absorption coefficient of silicon carbide, is measured and …

The Effects Of Ketones On Brain Metabolism And Cognition, Erin Reiko Saito Jul 2023

The Effects Of Ketones On Brain Metabolism And Cognition, Erin Reiko Saito

Theses and Dissertations

The brain is one of the most energetically demanding organs within the human body and is cognitively susceptible to energetic deficits such that the rise in obesity, insulin resistance, and Alzheimer’s disease in recent decades pose a substantial threat to cognitive longevity. The therapeutic efficacy of ketones are well-established in epilepsy and are currently being applied to other disease states. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by impairments in brain glucose uptake and metabolism in regions relevant to learning, memory, and cognition that progress with the disease. While brain glucose uptake is impaired, ketone uptake is unaltered, potentially enabling ketones to fuel …

Journal Looks At Enigmatic Tree Of Life Stone

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In the early 1950s archaeologist M. Wells Jakeman claimed that a carved stone monument unearthed in Izapa, Mexico, in 1941 depicted Lehi's vision of the tree of life as reported in the Book of Mormon. As is true for any archaeological find, the accuracy of that initial assessment of the stone dubbed Izapa Stela 5 will either stand or begin to fall in light of further evidence and study, though a definitive determination regarding the stela may simply not be possible.

Nibley On The Infancy Gospels

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

A mass of popular fables and miracle stories about Jesus' childhood have come down to us as the "Infancy Gospels." In Mormonism and Early Christianity, Hugh Nibley calls these stories unabashed daydreams in which Jesus is always the "super-boy" whose tricks are the dread and envy of all his fellows.

Relationships Between Running Biomechanics And Femoral Articular Cartilage Thickness And Composition In Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Patients, Hyunwook Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) have demonstrated morphological and compositional changes in femoral articular cartilage. However, it is unclear how running biomechanics are associated with femoral cartilage thickness and composition for both ACLR patients and controls. Objectives: (1) to compare measures of femoral cartilage thickness and composition between ACLR patients and matched non-ACLR controls at resting, (2) to investigate how 30 minutes of running influences the aforementioned measures for ACLR patients and controls, and (3) to investigate relationships between running biomechanics and knee cartilage thickness and composition in ACLR patients and controls. Methods: Twenty ACLR patients (age: …

Article Explains How New Testament Books Were Chosen

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Within a century of the death of Jesus Christ, Christians had produced a body of religious writings that preserved and complemented their presumably rich oral tradition. This small but diverse library included various accounts of Christ's birth, collections of his sayings, reports of his wondrous deeds and the missionary activities of his apostles, Paul's letters, homilies, and more. A few centuries later, some of these writings became canonized as accepted scriptures to the exclusion of others. Who made those crucial decisions? How, when, and under what circumstances was our present New Testament canon determined?

The Bible And The Dead Sea Scrolls

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In the June 1999 issue of Bible Review, Sidnie White Crawford, associate professor and chair of the Department of Classics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, considers what the Dead Sea Scrolls reveal about the position of early Jews on the emendation, authority, and canonicity of biblical texts. Crawford begins by noting that neither a canonical Bible nor even a fixed text of the Torah (Genesis-Deuteronomy) existed when the Dead Sea Scrolls were written (250 B.C.-A.D. 70).

Herculaneum Project Exceeds Expectations

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In February 1999 INSIGHTS reported on a proposed FARMS project involving multispectral imaging (MSI) of carbonized scrolls excavated at Herculaneum, an ancient site near Naples, Italy. One month later, a FARMS team traveled to the Biblioteca Nazionale in Naples to conduct tests on the Herculaneum papyri to see if these fragile, deteriorating texts could be successfully imaged. The test images surpassed all expectations, and the FARMS Center for the Preservation of Ancient Religious Texts (CPART) received permission to image the library’s collection of Herculaneum texts.

The Remnant Of Joseph, John A. Tvedtnes

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In a speech of encouragement to his troops, the Nephite chief captain Moroni spoke of his people as "a remnant of [the seed of] Joseph" who had been sold into Egypt by his brothers (Alma 46:23-24, 27). This phrase and variations of it appear elsewhere in the Book of Mormon as well (e.g., 3 Nephi 5:23; 10:17; 15:12; Ether 13:6-8, 10).

Rock Marks ‘House Of Wisdom’ Jul 2023

Rock Marks ‘House Of Wisdom’

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

A large granite rock quarried from the Wasatch Moun tains now welcomes visitors to the East Stadium House, offices of the Islamic Translation Division of BYU’s Center for the Preservation of Ancient Religious Texts (CPART). The Arabic inscription on the rock transcribes as bayt alhikma, “House of Wisdom.” According to CPART research associate Glen Cooper, this was the name of the association of translators believed to have been patronized by the great Caliph of Islam, al-Ma-mum (died A.D. 833), who translated important Greek scientific and philosophical texts into Arabic. Because CPART publishes editions of important Arabic works with accompanying English …

Pattern-Based Target Selection For Treatment Of Irregular Past Tense: A Single-Case Experimental Design For Children With Dld, Kirsten M. Hannig Russell, Amy Wilder, Julie L. Wambaugh Jul 2023

Pattern-Based Target Selection For Treatment Of Irregular Past Tense: A Single-Case Experimental Design For Children With Dld, Kirsten M. Hannig Russell, Amy Wilder, Julie L. Wambaugh

Faculty Publications

Purpose: Many children with developmental language disorder (DLD) demonstrate difficulty inflecting irregular past tense verbs. We evaluated using phonological-based patterns (i.e., schemas) to select targets for treatment of irregular verb inflection for children with DLD. We hypothesized this approach would result in acquisition of treated verbs, generalization to untreated verbs within the same phonological schema, and increased use of correct irregular verbs in naturalistic contexts.

Method: Treatment was provided to three 7-year-old participants with DLD in the context of multiple baseline design across behaviors and participants. Phonological schemas included vowel change, final alveolar, and dual change irregular verbs. Treatment was …

Caveat Emptor: Scan Quality Of Elsevier's Digital Backfile Pdf Collection, Gregory M. Nelson, Paul K.J. Robbins, Dennis L. Eggett

Faculty Publications

Scans of journal articles originally published in print, otherwise known as digital journal backfiles, benefit library patrons by providing near instantaneous access to important older information and full-text searchability. Digital backfiles can serve as a reliable surrogate for their corresponding print journals which could be removed from the library, freeing up space for other patron services. Both benefits are realized when the scanned articles are of sufficient clarity to replace the print versions. Several studies have analyzed small and subject-narrow sections of Elsevier’s digital backfile. This article contains a scan-quality analysis from 1578 journals that contain nearly four million articles …

The Future Of International Law Freedom Of Journalism: A Transitional Justice Framework, Edward L. Carter Jul 2023

The Future Of International Law Freedom Of Journalism: A Transitional Justice Framework, Edward L. Carter

Faculty Publications

The overwhelming majority of digital and physical attacks on journalists are done with impunity. This results in lower-quality journalism, less scrutiny of government, and less healthy societies and democracies. The international human rights law concept of transitional justice could bolster collective will and inform legal mechanisms to combat such impunity. Judges and investigators in several recent cases of attacks on journalists have invoked transitional justice concepts, including truth-telling, criminal investigations and prosecutions, reparations, and institutional reforms to guarantee non-recurrence. These mechanisms should be fully implemented to protect journalism at local, national, and international levels.

Ally Mediation Of Social Media Use For Adults With Autism, Spring S. Cullen Jun 2023

Ally Mediation Of Social Media Use For Adults With Autism, Spring S. Cullen

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has highlighted the unique challenges young Autistic adults face when using social media. We extend this work by analyzing how guardians and allies, such as service providers, mediate the social media usage of young Autistic adults in order to address and mitigate online risks. Based on analysis of interview transcripts (8 young adults on the Autism spectrum, 4 parents, 10 staff members), we uncover the mediation tactics used, how they differ based on the ally's relationship with the individual, and the tactics' varying degrees of effectiveness. The findings of this research contribute to the literature by informing the …
