A History Of Iosepa, The Utah Polynesian Colony, Dennis H. Atkin Jan 1959

A History Of Iosepa, The Utah Polynesian Colony, Dennis H. Atkin

Theses and Dissertations

The first missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints went to Hawaii in 1850. As native converts joined the Church, many desired to gather in Utah with converts from other parts of the world, in order to perform Church ordinances in the temples located there. Until about 1870, Hawaiians were prohibited by their government from leaving the Islands permanently. As the laws were relaxed they came to Utah a few at a time with returning missionaries until by 1889 about seventy-five were living in Salt Lake City.

Cultural and social problems arose causing the Church officials to …

Brigham Young's Philosophy Of History, H. Carleton Marlow Jan 1959

Brigham Young's Philosophy Of History, H. Carleton Marlow

Theses and Dissertations

"Brigham Young's Philosophy of History" attempts to describe how Brigham Young gave order and unity to the hubbub and confusion in which man lived. The laws which gave form and pattern to the baffling, diverse phenomena of and around man receive major attention. This thesis is an expository type of writing rather than an evaluation of Brigham Young's ideas and principles or laws in reference to other philosophies of history, Latter-day Saint theology, the modern natural exact sciences, or in reference to the current views of his times. This thesis is limited to a digestion of Brigham Young's works in …

The Theory And Practice Of The Political Kingdom Of God In Mormon History, 1829-1890, Klaus J. Hansen Jan 1959

The Theory And Practice Of The Political Kingdom Of God In Mormon History, 1829-1890, Klaus J. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

The history of Mormonism reveals that almost from its beginning, the new church was to be not only a basis for an ecclesiastical Kingdom of God but for a temporal Kingdom as well. This temporal Kingdom, never fully realized, was to develop into a political state preparatory to the inauguration of the Apocalyptic Kingdom. Ultimately, this Kingdom was to rule the whole world.

Theory and practice did not always merge in the organization and administration of this Kingdom. When Joseph Smith organized the nucleus of a political government for the Kingdom of God in 1844 it became rather obvious that …

From the time of his initial election in 1882 as the territorial delegate until his retirement in 1893, he labored in behalf of his constituents. No task proved to be too tiresome or laborious; industry, honesty, and sober self-reliance were personal characteristics of the man …

Nellie Nash: (A Pioneer Biography Of Mrs. Ellen Elvira Nash Parkinson Wife Of William Chandler Parkinson), Carma L. Sandberg Jan 1959

Nellie Nash: (A Pioneer Biography Of Mrs. Ellen Elvira Nash Parkinson Wife Of William Chandler Parkinson), Carma L. Sandberg

Theses and Dissertations

In the writings of mankind there are far more biographies of men than of women. In the histories of the lives of Utah's pioneers the biographical accounts of the pioneer men far outnumber those of pioneer women. Few of these men have been successful without the help of a woman, be she wife or mother, or both. This thesis concerns itself with one of these unsung help-mates.
The events of a wife's life are so interwoven with the events of her husband's life that to write about one must necessitate writing about the other. This writing attempts to maintain the …

The purpose of this study has been to make an analysis of the bird population of this region in order to determine the comparative abundance of the species, their seasonal distribution within the area, and their ecological preferences.

Genetic Variation In Bluebunch Wheatgrass, Max P. Dunford Aug 1958

Genetic Variation In Bluebunch Wheatgrass, Max P. Dunford

Theses and Dissertations

Agropyron spicatum (Pursh) Scribn, and Smith, an important forage grass distributed primarily throughout western United States and northward into Canada, exhibits considerable ecological, cytological, and genetic variation. Twenty-five populations of 100 plants each were scored to obtain data on morphological and ecological variation. Statistical analysis of the data from fourteen of the populations showed that correlations between awn divergence and length, rhizomes with number of culms, adn diameter with number of culms were inconsistent or not significant. However, the correltion between rhizomes and diameter was significant in all populations.

Decahydroquinoxaline : Stereoisomers And Derivatives, Lynn Pendleton Aug 1958

Decahydroquinoxaline : Stereoisomers And Derivatives, Lynn Pendleton

Theses and Dissertations

The preparation of decahydroquinoxaline by four different methods, with no determination of geometrical configuration made, was reported in the literature. The purpose of this thesis was to establish the geometrical configurations of the decahydroquinoxalines prepared by these four methods and to determine if, as the work of previous investigators suggested, the two pure isomers of decahydroquinoxaline isomerized, each giving an equilibrium mixture of both isomers. Decahydroquinoxaline was prepared by three of the four previously reported methods of preparation. Comparison of the properties of the decahydroquinoxalines prepared and the preparation, comparison, and analyses of the diacetyl and the dinitroso derivatives of …

Work was also undertaken to further study the catalytic properties of rhenium heptoxide. The activity of this latter compound had received some study in a previous project. A complete review of the literature has been made on the organic and inorganic chemistry of rhenium trioxide and rhenium trichloride. A survey of the literature on catalytic hydrogenation and the chemistry of rhenium heptoxide has also been included. Rhenium trioxide was prepared by three similar methods. The first two involved the formation …

The Bromination Of 1,1,1-Ethanetriacetic Acid, John A. Gurney Jul 1958

The Bromination Of 1,1,1-Ethanetriacetic Acid, John A. Gurney

Theses and Dissertations

Essential to the entire field of Organic Chemistry is the nature of the carbon to carbon bond. Our current concepts and guiding principles concerning it are almost solely constructed from aliphatic compounds, certain simple ring species, and aromatic systems. Except for special cases, aliphatic and aromatic types are felt to be mildly strained or free from internal tension while the alicylic small and medium ring compounds are the so-called strained molecules. These strained compounds involve bending back or compression of two of the four carbon bonds from an equilibrium position. Distortions of more complex origin occur in the paracyclophanes and …

The External Morphology Of Pseudopanurgus Aethiops (Cresson), Glenn A. Hackwell Jul 1958

The External Morphology Of Pseudopanurgus Aethiops (Cresson), Glenn A. Hackwell

Theses and Dissertations

In comparing the head of Pseudopanurgus with Anthophora and Apis, the general outline appears rather similar, the most significant variation being found on the posterior surface. Extending ventrally from the postoccipital suture to the dorsal wall of the proboscidial fossa is a suture known as the fused hypostomal suture. The hypostomal area is rather small and makes up only a small portion of the dorsal and lateral walls of the proboscidial fossa, the remainder being formed by the postgena. If this is correct, the hypostomal carinae (a term with which the author does not agree) are actually located on the …

A Study Of Physoderma On Three Species Of Portulacaceae, David L. Mumford Jun 1958

A Study Of Physoderma On Three Species Of Portulacaceae, David L. Mumford

Theses and Dissertations

Three species of the Portulacaceae each infected by a Physoderma parasite were collected at several locations in Utah. The hosts have been identified as Claytonia lanceolata Pursh., Oreobroma pygmaeum (A. Gray) Howell, and Erocallis triphylla (S. Wats.) Rydb. Since our present knowledge of Physoderma on members of the Portulacaceae is meager, it seemed desirable to learn as much as possible about the parasite, its hosts, and the relationship between parasite and host. Plants of all three hosts activated from perennating organs were grown for extended periods of time under uniform conditions. Cold treatments were most successful in activating host perennating …

A Study Of Three Photochemical Activities Of Chloroplasts, Jimmy W. Hinkson Apr 1958

A Study Of Three Photochemical Activities Of Chloroplasts, Jimmy W. Hinkson

Theses and Dissertations

Chloroplasts of sugar beet leaves were subjected to treatment by heating, by incubation at pH 8.5 and pH 5.5, by incubation in ion low water, by sonic oscillation, by digestion with enzymes (lysozyme, pancreatin, and lipase), by extraction with digitonin, and by chemical compounds including 8-hydroxy-quinoline, sodium azide, zinc sulfate, phenyl mercuric acetate, potassium cyanide, 1-allylthiourea, 2,4-dinitrophenol, thymol, and p-chloromercuribenzoate. A comparative study was made of the effects of these treatments upon three photochemical reactions (the photoreduction of 2,6- dichlorophenol indophenol, the photoreduction of indigo carmine in the presence of a couple composed of 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol and ascorbic acid, and …

The Photoreduction Of Indigo Carmine Flavin Mononucleotide And Diphosphopyridine Nucleotide, By Illuminated Chloroplasts, M. Odell Hobbs Apr 1958

The Photoreduction Of Indigo Carmine Flavin Mononucleotide And Diphosphopyridine Nucleotide, By Illuminated Chloroplasts, M. Odell Hobbs

Theses and Dissertations

An investigation was made of the photoreduction of indigo carmine dye and flavin mononucleotide (FMN) by an illuminated sugar beet leaf homogenate in the presence of 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol dye (DPIP) and ascorbic acid. DPIP and ascorbate were absolutely required for the reaction. Reconstitution experiments indicated a requirement for a heat-labile factor present in the supernatant fluid following centrifugation of the leaf homogenate. This factor activated the photoreduction of indigo carmine more than 20 times. The photoreduction of FMN was activated 2 times by this factor. Studies on the stoichiometry of indigo carmine photoreduction revealed that one mole of ascorbate was photooxidized …

Factors Influencing The Decisions Of Latter-Day Saint Youth Concerning The Selection Of A Temple Or Non-Temple Type Of Marriage Ceremony, Boyd C. Rollins Jan 1958

Factors Influencing The Decisions Of Latter-Day Saint Youth Concerning The Selection Of A Temple Or Non-Temple Type Of Marriage Ceremony, Boyd C. Rollins

Theses and Dissertations

It is the writer's opinion that deviation from temple marriage in the Mormon culture brings to bear a direct and indirect social pressure so strong that it effects deviation in other areas of the culture. This contention is partly borne out by a tested hypothesis that "Members within the Latter-day Saint Church who were married in the temple would have characteristic patterns of behavior which would differ from patterns of behavior of those members who were married by a Church official or by a civil authority". This hypothesis was tested mainly with respect to behavior after marriage.
The cause of …

This thesis is a biography of Joseph Smith Sr., first patriarch to the Church and father of the illustrious Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. The overall purpose of this treatise is of a four-fold nature. First, it proposes to reveal the kind of personality and character he possessed. Second, it intends to present a near complete and accurate account of his deeds and experiences. Third, it hopes to relate him to the historical period in which he lived. And fourth, by fulfilling the three purposes named, it will attempt to evaluate the assertions that have been frequently made that the Prophet …

An Explication Of Some Philosophical Aspects Of The Thought Of Orson Pratt, Joseph Willard Tingey Jan 1958

An Explication Of Some Philosophical Aspects Of The Thought Of Orson Pratt, Joseph Willard Tingey

Theses and Dissertations

No formalized philosophical system has officially represented the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to this time. Some claim there is need for one while others believe that none is forthcoming or necessary. Let the question be argued elsewhere. It is to be observed that metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and science are all essentially represented in mormonism and should at least be recognized in comparison with their kind.
The useful practices of various epistemologies were employed for verification purposes although authoritarianism dominated the acquisition of knowledge in the infant Church. This need not indicate that the submitting authority was …

An Analysis Of Style Variations In The Book Of Mormon, Glade L. Burgon Jan 1958

An Analysis Of Style Variations In The Book Of Mormon, Glade L. Burgon

Theses and Dissertations

The majority of critics who have opposed the Book of Mormon have claimed the book is the product of one man because of the uniformity of style throughout. If these charges were true, Joseph Smith's claim of divine origin for the book and its contents would be in jeopardy.

Studies have shown Semitisms, enallage, and constructions amidst the Book of Mormon writings which seem to indicate that it is a fairly literal translation. If it is such, style differences among the writers should be evident to some degree.

The mental or emotional state of a writer fashions his writings. The …

A Study Of The Forces Leading To The Adoption Of Prohibition In Utah In 1917, Bruce T. Dyer Jan 1958

A Study Of The Forces Leading To The Adoption Of Prohibition In Utah In 1917, Bruce T. Dyer

Theses and Dissertations

The forces in the campaign that was to bring prohibition to Utah in 1917 had become identified with the prohibition movement by the spring of 1908. On the side of the drys were the various temperance organizations, the churches of Utah and the major political parties. Allied agaist the prohibition group were the combined liquor interests. Uncommitted to either side were the authorities of the Mormon Church, although both groups could seemingly lay claim to the support of the Church authorities when conflicting statements and actions of that body were put before the public view.

A Study Of The Changes In The Contents Of The Book Of Moses From The Earliest Available Sources To The Current Edition, James Roy Harris Jan 1958

A Study Of The Changes In The Contents Of The Book Of Moses From The Earliest Available Sources To The Current Edition, James Roy Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Students and scholars of the L. D. S. Scriptures have long been aware of differences existing in the various publications of the material in our Book of Moses. To our knowledge no one has ever carefully isolated or analyzed these changes nor has any explanation been given either to justify or condemn them.

Our first objective has been to make a linear comparison of all significant publications of the contents of the Book of Moses. By "significant" we refer to those publications in which there are additions or omissions of words. All changes are then considered in the light of …

A History Of The Missionary Activities Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Near East, 1884-1929, Rao H. Lindsay Jan 1958

A History Of The Missionary Activities Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Near East, 1884-1929, Rao H. Lindsay

Theses and Dissertations

In the wake of the Protestant penetration into the Near East, Jacob Spori was sent to Constantinople in 1884 to open a mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Turkey. Spori and later his companion, Joseph M. Tanner, preached first to the Europeans of Constantinople, then projected their efforts down into the major cities of Palestine. Among the German colonists, the missionaries found several valuable converts, most of whom emigrated to Utah.

Ferdinand F. Hintze gained the title "Father of the Armenian Mission" through his extensive preaching tours throughout the interior of Asia Minor. He found …
