Very High Pressure Effects Upon The Epr Spectrum Of Ruby, H. Mark Nelson, D. B. Larson, J. H. Gardner

Faculty Publications

The variation in the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum of ruby as a function of pressure has been observed to beyond 70 kbar for a magnetic field orientation parallel to the crystalline c axis. The data can be interpreted in terms of the usual spin Hamiltonian, where the spectroscopic splitting factor g|| has the same value as at ambient pressures, but where the zero-field splitting deltaincreases in a linear fashion from 0.38 to 0.43 cm. The experimental apparatus has been described previously, although important improvements in the pressure seal and in the pressure calibration have been made and are described …

An Electrophoretic And Chromatographic Study Of The Hemoglobin From Adult And Fetal Pigs, Donald William Green

Theses and Dissertations

Hemoglobin, from the erythrocytes of adult and fetal pigs, was isolated and analyzed by carboxymethylcellulose column chromatography and electrophoresis on polyacetate. These techniques demonstrate the existence of four fetal components (F0, F1A, F1B, F1C) and two adult components (A0, A1) based on their elution pH values and electrophoretic mobilities. The shift from-fetal to adult forms is initiated sometime between eight weeks after birth and one year. The change is not completed until sometime after one year and the major fetal forms (F0, F1A) maintain a 15% level in a mature adult. This report is in contrast with the results of …

Predation Of Leptothrips Mali (Fitch) On Mites In Central Utah Orchards, James G. Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

Predation by thrips was referred to as early as 1882 when Pergande discussed their habits. Later, Plank (1936) found Leptothrips mali (Fitch) to be predaceous on lepidopterous eggs, and Sharp (1938) cited it as a being a predator of the pecan nut caseborer, Acrobasis caryae Grote. Bailey (1939) stated that the six-spotted thrip, Scolothrips sexmaculatus (Pergande), is predaceous on Tetranychus telarius (L.), Tetranychus pacificus McG., Bryobia praetiosa Koch, Paratetranychus citri McG., Paratetranychus pilosus (C & F.), Paratetranychus indicus Hirst, Paratetranychus yothersi (McG.), Paratetranychus ilicis (McG.), and Phyllocoptes oleivorus Aschm. and in 1943 Bailey and Keifer noted that L. mali fed …

A Study Of Thermal Responses Of A Body Of Complex Geometry To A Moving Heat Source, J. Norman Smith Aug 1967

A Study Of Thermal Responses Of A Body Of Complex Geometry To A Moving Heat Source, J. Norman Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of the fusion welding process upon the metals being welded is a matter of great interest and has been the subject of much investigation, both theoretical and experimental. The properties of metals are determined by the structure of their crystals (within limits for any given metal), and the crystalline structure is determined by heating and cooling rates. Thus the knowledge of temperatures, and heating and cooling rates, becomes the key to understanding these effects of heating. Since the greatest part of fusion welding is done using a gas torch or an electric arc, the necessary theoretical study is …
