Frederick Barbarossa And The Lombard League: Imperial Regalia, Prescriptive Rights, And The Northern Italian Cities, David R. Carr Jan 1989

Frederick Barbarossa And The Lombard League: Imperial Regalia, Prescriptive Rights, And The Northern Italian Cities, David R. Carr

Quidditas

The struggle between Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the Lombard League illustrates conflicts between not only imperial and municipal ambitions but also regalian and customary rights. The ability of the emperor to assert and to profit from regalian rights reflected the efficacy of imperial power. Conversely, the power of the Lombard city-states lay in the recognition of the validity of customary rights. While this conflict centers on the differing principles of Roman and "Germanic" law, the present study argues that the purported devotion of Barbarossa to Roman law and of the Italian communes to customary law misrepresents their positions. The Lombards' …

Effects Of A Parent/Teen Workshop, Roberta Magarrell Jan 1989

Effects Of A Parent/Teen Workshop, Roberta Magarrell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effect of a parent-teen structured family facilitation program (PAT). The study compared pre and post workshop scores on a number of dependent variables in a workshop, a replication of the workshop, and a comparison group.
Analysis of the data revealed no significant differences from pretest to post test in either of the groups. However when the groups were combined there were some statistically significant differences from pretest to post test. The fathers increased in their ability to transfer control while the mothers decreased in kindness. A few post hoc analyses …

Christian Hansen, "The Fairy Tale Man", Johannes Knudsen, Gudrun Nielsen, Translator Jan 1989

Christian Hansen, "The Fairy Tale Man", Johannes Knudsen, Gudrun Nielsen, Translator

The Bridge

My grandfather, Christian Hansen, came to Tyler, Minnesota, 100 years ago (1888) to make his home and to assist Pastor H. J. Pedersen in the building and founding of a folk high school. Pedersen had just been selected to be the first pastor of the newly formed congregation and the area was beginning to develop from virgin prairie to an agricultural community. Christian Hansen was a member of the first faculty of the folk school and throughout his long life he contributed much to establishing a Danish-American cultural enclave which became known as Danebod.

Tommaso Campanella's La Città Del Sole: Topography And Astrology, Ilona Klein Jan 1989

Tommaso Campanella's La Città Del Sole: Topography And Astrology, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

At the beginning of the seventeenth century the Dominican friar from Calabria, fra' Tommaso Campanella, had already solidified his anti-Aristotelian theories, had been persecuted and arrested, and was simulating madness in order to save his life while incarcerated in Naples. When Campanella conceived La Città del Sole under these circumstances in 1602, he was interpreting Telesio's naturalistic philosophy in a metaphysical manner, and was expressing in nuce the fundamental theories he would amplify two years later in Del Senso delle Cose e delle Magie.

Creating A Shared History: Serial Narratives In The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894, Sherry Baker

Faculty Publications

"Creating a Shared History: Serial Narratives in The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894" is a cultural press history and textual analysis of contemporary indigenous serial literature in a nineteenth-century Mormon young women's periodical. It tests press historian Catherine Covert's assertions that some of the functions of the press are (1) to be a conservator of values, and (2) to engender harmony and affiliation among community members. The investigator places the Journal within the historical/ cultural context from which it was written, and identifies specific messages in the serial narratives that encouraged the preservation of Mormon values and Mormon community affiliation. The …

Removing Impediments To Water Markets, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

A few years ago it was mostly economists, notably those of a libertarian stripe who were advocating voluntary market exchanges of water in the West. Now these exchanges, or transfers as they are sometimes referred to, are being unabashedly recommended by water users, politicians, bureaucrats, and even environmental organizations, who have come to see their value for achieving a more efficient water allocation. Water markets are an idea whose time has finally arrived.

Moving To The United States, Walter Angst Nov 1988

Moving To The United States, Walter Angst

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In July of 1951, I emigrated with my family to the United States. Today, I shudder when I think of our daring decision to abandon all familiar life, to bundle up two babies and a few belongings, and to trust our luck in a strange country. After all, I had only a vague promise of a job as cabinet-maker, only rudimentary knowledge of English, no money to speak of, and no prospect of getting help from anyone. Why did I change continent, language, culture, profession, home, and leave friends and relatives? The question has often been asked of me. Usually, …

Gaining A Measure Of Success, Walter Angst

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In the spring of 1943, I was able to win a job with a large firm at the Zlirich branch of the "Therma" company. The main plant was in Schwanden, Canton Glarus, and produced electrical bakery ovens, household stoves, as well as refrigerators and air conditioning systems. I was hired as a heliographist, for the copying of technical drawings. Very soon I advanced phenomenally within the firm and for eight years I worked in various positions. I served in the office of chief engineer, kept the time-clock records, did the payroll, supervised the travels of the service personnel, and administered …

Making It At The Smithsonian, Walter Angst

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Once I had a job at the Smithsonian Institution, I had to wait a whole year until my position opened, in January of 1968, and even then my position had first to be approved by Congress as at that time there was a hiring-freeze. I got hired as a "specialist for restoration" with Exhibits. We were a department of two people out of about 800. In order to justify my grade, I passed a mid-level exam, which was rather tough, as it was meant to be administered to generals, admirals, high level administrators, and Ph.Ds. Gordon, my supervisor, had difficulties …

Getting Re-Established, Walter Angst

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

My very first job was with a cabinet-maker called Marx, who had a tiny shop on 6th and K streets in Washington, D.C. He had three other young fellows working for him, one of whom spoke French. He could explain things to me. But coming from precision-minded Switzerland, I was not used to the sloppy ways these guys were doing cabinet work. And when I witnessed how they felt perfectly at ease banging an actual nail between the fence on a circular saw and the body of its grooved (metal) table, I was horrified. After three days I quit.

Tomorrow's Research Library: Vigor Or Rigor Mortis?, Richard Hacken Nov 1988

Tomorrow's Research Library: Vigor Or Rigor Mortis?, Richard Hacken

Faculty Publications

The gamut of futuristic visions in library literature—from optimistic to pessimistic, from realistic to fanciful. Contradictory answers to recurring questions are found: Can we finally say goodbye to Gutenberg? Will the library card be replaced by the telephone credit card? Will book ownership give way entirely to information access. Will "books without pages" and "libraries without walls" necessarily lead to librarians without jobs? Is it possible to set timetables? After past crystal ball gazers are compared, contrasted, and critiqued, positive plans for progress are suggested.

New Heraldic Creations And My Fourteen-Point Ethical Code, Walter Angst Nov 1988

New Heraldic Creations And My Fourteen-Point Ethical Code, Walter Angst

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Most of my contemporaries have many misconceptions about all things heraldic. Most people - if they even know what we are talking about - consider heraldic designs disdainfully as pretentious, superfluous, even silly, or at best arcane frills having to do with royalty. They are wrong. Armorial bearings are an expression of such things as sovereignty, of individuality, of beauty, of sagas, history, past glories and civic achievements. Just fancy our villages and resort places back-home: how poor would they be if they could not display their panoply of colorful community flags fluttering in the alpine breeze. Even here in …

GRANDMOTHER'S PUNS Grandmother Joss had a quiet sense of humor and was not above having a little fun with the language: In Bensenville the church bell was rung at 5 p.m. every Saturday afternoon to remind us that the following day would be Sunday and our presence in church would be appreciated. Grandmother's usual comment was: "Ah, die Kirche bellt schon."
