What I Think I Learned, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii

Faculty Publications

A retrospective review of fifty years of research and development experience showing the connectedness of the author’s theoretical ideas to practical application. An effort to show designers how over the span of a career new ideas begin as work-related insights and discoveries that by problem solving flow together to create a unique personal view of design and designing. Encouragement for individual designers to be willing to experiment with new ideas that may step beyond received practice and to learn from those experiences, even to the extent of testing and adopting new worldviews that may differ from the general view. Encouragement …

Fungicide Data, Amber Johnson Dec 2023

Fungicide Data, Amber Johnson

ScholarsArchive Data

This dataset contains emergence, biomass, and fungal biomass data collected during a laboratory study examining the effects of soil fungal level and seed coating treatment on the growth of bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata). Pathogenesis from soil and seed-borne fungus can limit success when restoring native species. Fungicides can combat fungal pathogens, but in some studies, fungicides treatments are ineffective at improving seedling emergence over untreated, control seed. These studies suggest low fungal presence due to dry conditions may be the cause of the ineffectiveness of fungicide treatments for some years and sites. This study tested if fungicide treatment …

Inference Methods For Token-Level Topic Assignments With Fixed Topics, Stephen Cowley Dec 2023

Inference Methods For Token-Level Topic Assignments With Fixed Topics, Stephen Cowley

Theses and Dissertations

Topic modeling, an unsupervised technique used to gain high-level understanding of a large collection of documents, often involves two major goals: The discovery of topics used in the corpus (topic-discovery) and the assignment of topics to individual words (token-level topic assignment). While Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) normally performs both of these steps simultaneously, some situations require only the token-level topic assignments, using fixed topics. We evaluate three topic assignment strategies using fixed topics -- Gibbs sampling, iterated conditional modes, and mean field variational inference -- to determine which should be used when only token-level topic assignment is needed. Among these …

The Fineview Dataset: A 3d Scanned Multi-View Object Dataset Of Fine-Grained Category Instances, Suguru Onda Dec 2023

The Fineview Dataset: A 3d Scanned Multi-View Object Dataset Of Fine-Grained Category Instances, Suguru Onda

Theses and Dissertations

In the past decade state-of-the-art deep learning models have shown impressive performance in many computer vision tasks by learning from large and diverse image datasets. Most of these datasets consist of web-scraped image collections. This approach, however, makes it very challenging to obtain desirable data such as multiple views of the same object, 3D geometric information, or camera parameters for a large-scale image dataset. In this paper, we propose a 3D-scanned multi-view 2D image dataset of fine-grained category instances with accurate camera calibration parameters. We describe our bi-directional, multi-camera and 3D scanning system and the data collection pipeline. Our target …

John Dickinson's "Falling Away In Politics," 1774-1776, Matthew Harris Dec 2023

John Dickinson's "Falling Away In Politics," 1774-1776, Matthew Harris

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Of all the Founding Fathers, recorded Benjamin Rush, "few men wrote, spoke and acted more for their country from the years [of] 1764 to the establishment of the federal government than [John] Dickinson." He was one of the only Founding Fathers to play a leading role in most of the significant events surrounding the birth of the American republic-from the Stamp Act Congress in 1765 to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Yet his standing today compared to that of his fellow revolutionaries is shamefully obscure in view of his contributions.

Anglo-Saxons And The Irish Sea, Ryan Patrick Crisp Dec 2023

Anglo-Saxons And The Irish Sea, Ryan Patrick Crisp

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Recently, Peter Brown described the Irish Sea in the early Middle Ages as "a Celtic 'Mediterranean of the north."' That assessment may be more than this small sea can measure up to, but sufficient evidence concludes that there was substantial naval activity in this area during the early Middle Ages. Interestingly, the Anglo-Saxons, though they had access to the Irish Sea, never ventured forth upon these waters in great numbers. This fact makes their few voyages upon this Celtic lake worth examining.

The Hungarian Secret Police And The Budapest Uprising Of 1956, Stuart Schulzke Dec 2023

The Hungarian Secret Police And The Budapest Uprising Of 1956, Stuart Schulzke

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

For fourteen days during late October and early November of 1956, Hungary staged a revolution and set up an autonomous government. The Hungarians forced Soviet military personnel to withdraw only to see them reenter the country, reestablish Soviet authority, and overthrow the short-lived Hungarian government. This sequence of events suggests an occupied nation's predictable reaction against foreign influence. However, it obscures one of the most critical aspects of Hungary's Revolution in 1956: the role of the Hungarian State Secret Police. Probably no governmental branch in Hungarian history has been more hated by the Hungarian people than the Allamvedelmi Hatosag (AVH), …

Medicine And The Mines, Troy Madsen Dec 2023

Medicine And The Mines, Troy Madsen

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

When Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad laborers stumbled onto eastern Utah's coal deposits in 1881, they sparked the development of Carbon County's explosive mining communities. Known across the state for their rampant disorder and untamed energy, the volatile coal mining towns of eastern Utah departed dramatically from the ecclesiastical, agrarian societies dotting the rest of Utah's map. Raucous taverns and seamy brothels quickly surfaced along Main Street in Helper. Violent union strikes shook the foundations of the communities' coal companies. Dark clouds of imminent danger hung continually above the portals of the region's somber, murky mines. Deeply rooted ethnic …

When Girl Meets Boy, Robbyn Thompson Scribner Dec 2023

When Girl Meets Boy, Robbyn Thompson Scribner

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Young women in traditional Russian peasant society had little, if any, choice about whom they married. The choice of a spouse was most often made by the father, although occasionally the mother would also have a say in the decision. Olga, a character in Goncharov's Oblomov, says of young women, "We do not marry, but we are given in marriage." The tradition that women had relatively little say in the matter is further highlighted by traditional folk lyrics young betrothed girls would sing, such as: "I've been given away" and "They are making me marry a lout." Laments such as …

Your Mission, Should You Choose To Attempt It, Is To Save The Mona Lisa! Gamification As A Method For Teaching Art, Caleb Ovard

Theses and Dissertations

To increase student engagement in their classroom, the author created an art curriculum using gamification methods that incorporates elements of tabletop role-playing games. The Role-playing Art Curriculum is a key element of this thesis. Possible research approaches involving game-based learning and gamification were examined to point toward future research and reflection regarding games and game-like content into an art curriculum. Action research methods were used to create and run the Role-playing Art Curriculum. The author concludes that the gamified curriculum took extra preparation and required more management to run then other traditional art curriculums.

Harnessing The Power Of Student Voice: A Case Study Of Hybrid Proficiency-Based And Co-Created Curriculum And Assessment, Kaitlyn A. Seamons Dec 2023

Harnessing The Power Of Student Voice: A Case Study Of Hybrid Proficiency-Based And Co-Created Curriculum And Assessment, Kaitlyn A. Seamons

Theses and Dissertations

Assessment has become a dirty word in arts education, because art is notoriously difficult to assess. Assessment, which is often disliked or even disavowed by arts educators, due to its history of incompatibility with the idiosyncratic nature of arts learning, should ideally be utilized as a means of measuring student progress and help teachers understand how to help students succeed. While assessment can also be used to evaluate programs and teachers and to compare student successes relative to those of other students, I will be focusing on measuring individual student progress for my thesis and building a curriculum to support …

An Advanced Sensor Network To Calculate Net Unit Heat Rate Of A Coal-Fired Boiler In Real-Time For Use In Dynamic Optimization, Keane Christopher Stewart Dec 2023

An Advanced Sensor Network To Calculate Net Unit Heat Rate Of A Coal-Fired Boiler In Real-Time For Use In Dynamic Optimization, Keane Christopher Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic operation of dispatchable energy sources is crucial for enabling the efficient integration of intermittent renewable energy into the electricity grid. Coal-fired boilers have been required to increase transient operation as renewable energy expands in order to avoid excess renewable energy going to waste. The frequent transient operation required to meet residual energy demand has created a challenge for coal-fired units to operate efficiently. This work utilizes an Advanced Sensor Network (ASN) to calculate Net Unit Heat Rate (NUHR) of a coal-fired boiler in real time through combustion calculations and statistical correlations to provide the tools for optimizing dynamic operation. …

Understanding The Origin, Evolution, And Dynamics Of Transneptunian Binaries, Benjamin C N Proudfoot Dec 2023

Understanding The Origin, Evolution, And Dynamics Of Transneptunian Binaries, Benjamin C N Proudfoot

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation discusses research that focuses on understanding transneptunian objects (TNOs) using a variety of techniques and approaches. In Chapter 1, I introduce the main concepts used throughout this dissertation and discuss the current understanding of the transneptunian region. In Chapter 2, I discuss my efforts to understand how Neptune's late stages of migration affect the Haumea family, the only known collisional family in the transneptunian region. Using advanced simulations of Neptune migration, I find that the Haumea family can plausibly form before the termination of giant planet migration and show that this extensively mixes the family. The simplest explanation …

Theses and Dissertations

Furo[3,4-c] pyranone is a unique bicyclic molecular structure found in bioactive sesquiterpene isobolivianine and in artificial cytotoxic stilbene derivatives. The structure of furo[3,4-c] pyranone is analogous to cyclopenta[c] pyran structure found in potent cytotoxic iridoids like catapol. Chiral substrates for intramolecular hetero-Diels-Alder (IHDA) reaction have been synthesized in yields ranging from 39% to 81%. These compounds undergo [4+2] cycloaddition via ambimodal/ bispericyclic process to give a mixture of furo[3,4-c] pyranone in yields ranging 40-70% and aryl tetralin lactone derivatives. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to gain insight into the mechanism leading to the formation of these compounds. …

Optimal Method To Obtain Soil Strength Properties In Sands For Laterally Loaded Pile Analysis In Lpile, Troy Roger Washburn

Theses and Dissertations

One common software program developed for analyzing single laterally loaded piles is called LPILE. Soil properties are required as input into LPILE. For sands, the soil properties required are effective soil unit weight, γ’; subgrade modulus, k; and the internal friction angle, ϕ’. There are two commonly used methods to obtain ϕ’ and subsequently k: the API method and Bolton method. Fourteen different pile test sites were used in the analysis of the API and Bolton methods to obtain soil strength properties in sands for laterally loaded single pile tests. Between the fourteen pile test sites, a total of 26 …

Local Atomic And Magnetic Structure Of Multiferroic (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O3, Braedon Jones Dec 2023

Local Atomic And Magnetic Structure Of Multiferroic (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O3, Braedon Jones

Theses and Dissertations

We present a detailed study of the local atomic and magnetic structure of the type-I multiferroic perovskite system (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O3 using x-ray and neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation (μSR) techniques. The atomic PDF analysis reveals widespread nanoscale tetragonal distortions of the crystal structure even in the paraelectric phase with average cubic symmetry, corresponding to incipient ferroelectricity in the local structure. Magnetic PDF analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and μSR likewise confirm the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the paramagnetic state, which grow in magnitude as the temperature approaches the magnetic transition. We show …

Mechanical Characterization Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Forest Microelectrodes For Neural Interfacing, Spencer Mcleod Roberts Dec 2023

Mechanical Characterization Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Forest Microelectrodes For Neural Interfacing, Spencer Mcleod Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

Silicon intracortical microelectrodes arrays (MEA) provide some of the best performance for brain computer interfaces but suffer from lifetime limitations that prevent clinical adoption. A primary contributor of lifetime limitations is the chronic foreign body response (FBR) which remains active in response to the brain tissue strain caused by implanted probes during brain micromotion. Designing probes with softer materials can reduce the chronic FBR and improve device lifetime. A high-aspect ratio CNT MEA could provide several advantages as an intracortical MEA but has yet to be mechanically characterized. CNT MEAs are infiltrated with 3 degrees of carbon infiltration and mechanically …

Motives And Methodologies For Improving 3d Displays, Dylan Charles Barton Dec 2023

Motives And Methodologies For Improving 3d Displays, Dylan Charles Barton

Theses and Dissertations

This work contains two key contributions to the development of 3D displays. First a successful exploratory human trial research study. By comparing multiple real displays in human trials, the factors of ease of use, time, and accuracy were able to be examined in a general setting, instead of isolated to only a specific type of 3D display. These human tests showed that 3D displays in general offer better ease of use and accuracy compared to 2D displays when showing 3D media. This differs from previous studies where only a single display was examined or theoretical papers discussing factors on paper. …

Simulating Government Institutions In Networked Societies, Michael Richards Dec 2023

Simulating Government Institutions In Networked Societies, Michael Richards

Theses and Dissertations

Modern human societies give rise to the expression of complex group dynamics between the members of said society due to the abundance of continued interactions. Of particular interest are how institutions affect these interactions between societal members, alter the resulting group dynamics, and impact society as a whole through their rules. Simulating these dynamics allows for greater insight into how these institutions function and allows researchers to pose interesting questions and test hypotheses within a laboratory setting. We present a novel approach to simulating institutions, particularly governments, within a networked society. This approach builds upon the Junior High Game, which …

Characterization Of Friction At The Tool/Material Interface In Friction Stir Welding, Bryan Gonzalo Ramos Gonzales Dec 2023

Characterization Of Friction At The Tool/Material Interface In Friction Stir Welding, Bryan Gonzalo Ramos Gonzales

Theses and Dissertations

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process development is very costly, and it is still experimental. A predictive model would optimize the weld by changing parameters and obtaining results that reflect the physical process. Friction is the primary adjustable parameter in FSW modeling. Currently, friction model selection is not physic-based. It is based on what is available and contributes to the best fit between the model and experimental data. The research objective is to characterize the interface tool/base material by studying the effect of tool friction coefficient and thermal properties. This is accomplished by changing welding parameters such as force, rpm, and …

Effect Of Parenting Techniques On Anxiety In Children, Amber Burton Dec 2023

Effect Of Parenting Techniques On Anxiety In Children, Amber Burton

Student Works

As anxiety among children becomes more prevalent, understanding how parenting styles affect its development may become more relevant. Anxiety affects various aspects of individuals' lives (socially, intellectually, physically, and spiritually), adding extra challenges. Anxiety can be influenced by genetics but is also potentially impacted by the child’s environment. Evidence suggests that children whose parents display higher levels of warmth through acceptance and caring behaviors tend to experience lower levels of anxiety (Butterfield et al., 2021). Additionally, lower levels of anxiety have been found in children with parents who utilize increased levels of autonomy, giving their children the freedom to make …

Tipping The Mesoscales: Advances In Multipeak Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging, J. Nicholas Porter Dec 2023

Tipping The Mesoscales: Advances In Multipeak Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging, J. Nicholas Porter

Theses and Dissertations

Material failure begins with strain between atoms and cascades upward into macroscopic damage such as cracks. Therefore, our ability to predict (and therefore prevent) material failure is largely limited by our understanding of this process. This understanding, however, has been impeded by the difficulty of directly observing such phenomena. In this thesis, I discuss recent advances in Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) which produce three-dimensional, mesoscopic images of interior strain in microcrystals. In particular, I present a novel algorithm, based on the concept of cyclic-constrained optimization (CCO), for the rapid, coupled reconstruction of a microcrystal from multiple Bragg diffraction patterns. …

Theses and Dissertations

The current study presents an investigation of the Portuguese language use among first generation Brazilian immigrants in Utah County. The research was carried out with 54 first generation immigrants. Several studies have shown that ethnic identity is related to shared cultural characteristics such as practices, beliefs, and languages (Liebkind, 2010; Pennycook, 2010; Reyes, 2010; Souza, 2016). This study explores the relationship between language and ethnic identity by analyzing the attitudes toward the Portuguese language, the contexts and factors that influence language choice, and the purposes for which the Portuguese language has been used by this selected group of immigrants. The …

"How Could Anyone But A Madman Have Thought This Sleeping Girl Dead?": L.T. Meade's Approach To The "Buried Alive" Literary Tradition In Support Of Death Certification Reform, Shelby Johnson Dec 2023

"How Could Anyone But A Madman Have Thought This Sleeping Girl Dead?": L.T. Meade's Approach To The "Buried Alive" Literary Tradition In Support Of Death Certification Reform, Shelby Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

A March 1866 issue of The Lancet observes, "If a newspaper were in want of a startling story with which to enliven a dull copy in the 'off season,' it could not do better than select one with the heading "'Buried Alive'"("Premature Interment" 295). Stories of being buried alive gave readers of all backgrounds a thrill. However, the stories frustrated the medical and scientific communities who were quick to dismiss the threat of live burial as a possibility in a modern world. Drawing on the literary history of "buried alive" stories and medical knowledge surrounding death signs and catalepsy, this …
