Y You Go Scale (Yygs): A Tool For Measuring Religious Commitment, Camron Angell, David Heath, Noah Perry, Taylor Hales
Student Works
Psychology historically has underplayed the role of religion and has not considered its importance in treatment and research. As such, the field is in need of measures of religious commitment and a greater understanding of the religious experience. There have been general measures of religious commitment such as the Religious Commitment Scale (RCS) and the Religious Commitment Inventory (RCI-10) (Dyer et al., 2023; Fox & Bouffard, 2015; Worthington, E., 2003). The issue with general scales is that religious commitment looks different for each religion. In this context, the present study sought to develop a scale of religious commitment for students …
Progress Towards Confinement Of An Ultracold Neutral Plasma With Electric And Magnetic Fields, Ben Farley
Progress Towards Confinement Of An Ultracold Neutral Plasma With Electric And Magnetic Fields, Ben Farley
Theses and Dissertations
Ultracold neutral plasmas represent a regime of plasmas that is not entirely described by theory, but is critical to our understanding of many phenomena. Though their low temperature makes observing them more manageable, even "confined" ultracold plasmas do not remain contained for more than a few hundred microseconds. No steady state or long-term confinement of an ultracold plasma created by pulse ionization has ever been demonstrated. In this thesis, the construction of a Penning trap for calcium ultracold neutral plasma is presented. The trap consists of a uniform magnetic field to trap the electrons radially and a quadrupole electric field …
Bartók’S Romanian Folk Dances: A Consideration Of Sound And Movement, Bailey Frame
Bartók’S Romanian Folk Dances: A Consideration Of Sound And Movement, Bailey Frame
Theses and Dissertations
Béla Bartók (1881-1945) cared deeply about authenticity in his work. He continually passed by derivative versions, and instead sought the oldest, earliest, most inaugural version of each folk tune to use as that launching point for his compositions. As he collected the Transylvanian folk tunes that would become his Romanian Folk Dances, he disregarded inconveniences like bad weather and exhausting travel, and he doggedly lugged with him a newly invented Edison phonograph. Though it was unwieldy and fickle, the device allowed him to capture folk music in the moment it was created. Not one for sterile auditoriums or music studios, …
Resisting Islamophobia: “Westophobia” In Social Media, Peter O'Brien, Jordan Nelson
Resisting Islamophobia: “Westophobia” In Social Media, Peter O'Brien, Jordan Nelson
Comparative Civilizations Review
Both the practice and study of Islamophobia repose on the concept of comparative civilizations. Purveyors of Islamophobia use what Roger Westcott calls a “denotative” understanding to posit an objective conflict (or “clash” à la Samual Huntington) between Western and Islamic civilizations. Scholars who analyze Islamophobia tend to take what Westcott calls a “connotative” approach that views civilizations as subjective, social constructs (à la Edward Said’s “Orient”).
Despite many advantages, the latter approach tends to dismiss the agency of Muslims to resist Islamophobia. This article counters that trend by exploring Islamist resistance to Islamophobia, to which we give the shorthand label, …
Towards The Systematic Cross-Civilizational Comparison: How Civilizations Work - Case 1: The Monotheistic Civilization, Liah Greenfeld
Towards The Systematic Cross-Civilizational Comparison: How Civilizations Work - Case 1: The Monotheistic Civilization, Liah Greenfeld
Comparative Civilizations Review
The purpose of this essay is to offer several hypotheses based on the concept of civilization and the conceptual scaffolding for the study of the cultural reality, proposed in the Spring 2024 CCR paper, regarding the three civilizations coexisting in the world today: the monotheistic, the Sinic, and the Indic. It introduces the modal dimensions along which civilizations may differ on the level of the individual mind — cognitive (pertaining both to the structure and contents of thought), moral, and emotional; and that of the society (separate institutions and institutional systems) and history.

Large wind turbines yield more energy but demand careful aeroelastic blade design. Coupled multiphysics design strategies can reduce wind energy costs exploiting fluid-structure interactions. This work presents the first high-fidelity aerostructural optimization study of a large wind turbine rotor. We use blade-resolved fluid dynamics and structural solvers in a monolithic gradient-based optimization framework to explore steady-state torque and blade mass trade-offs. The coupled-adjoint approach computes gradients efficiently, enabling the optimization of over 100 structural and geometric parameters simultaneously. Our optimization study modifies a DTU 10 MW benchmark with a simplified structure and isotropic material properties. The tightly coupled optimizations increase torque …
Intellectual Risk-Taking And Emotional Intelligence In Educational Systems: A Comparative Study Of The Usa, Finland, Japan, And Singapore, Peter Hecht
Comparative Civilizations Review
This paper examines how intellectual risk-taking (IRT) and emotional intelligence (EI) are integrated into educational systems in the United States, Finland, Japan, and Singapore, arguing that these factors are essential for fostering creativity, resilience, and academic success. In modern pedagogy, IRT is defined as the willingness of students to engage in challenging academic tasks despite potential failure, thereby promoting innovative problem-solving and critical thinking (Beghetto 210; Dweck 6). Complementarily, EI — an individual’s capacity to recognize, understand, and manage emotions — plays a crucial role in classroom dynamics by enhancing self-regulation and interpersonal relationships (Goleman 43; Mayer et al. 197). …
Book Review: Max Weber's Sociology Of Civilizations: A Reconstruction, Stephen T. Satkiewicz
Book Review: Max Weber's Sociology Of Civilizations: A Reconstruction, Stephen T. Satkiewicz
Comparative Civilizations Review
Max Weber (1864-1920) remains one of the most seminal figures in the social sciences, and his influence continues well over a century since his death. His explanation for the connections between the rise of capitalism and the Protestant Reformation still remains his most famous and most highly debated thesis. In spite of his prominence in the social sciences, Weber’s status within the civilizational field can be more ambiguous. He is not seen as a foundational figure at least when compared to others such as Pitirim Sorokin, Arnold J. Toynbee, or Oswald Spengler. That is not to say Weber is never …
Towards The Systematic Cross-Civilizational Comparison: How Civilizations Work Case 2: The Indic Civilization, Monika Monika
Towards The Systematic Cross-Civilizational Comparison: How Civilizations Work Case 2: The Indic Civilization, Monika Monika
Comparative Civilizations Review
Building on Liah Greenfeld’s (2024) framework of Systematic Cross-Civilizational Comparison, as outlined in her Spring 2024 CCR essay, this paper examines the cultural realities of the Indic civilization. Civilizations differ at both the individual level, including cognitive aspects (the structure and content of thought), moral dimensions (values and principles guiding behavior), and emotional patterns (typical emotional responses); and the societal level, i.e., distinct institutions, institutional systems, and historical trajectories (Greenfeld 2024).
In each civilization, these modal dimensions stem from and are shaped by the first civilizational principles — the foundational ideas framing the reality unique to that civilization. In Indic …
Sociological Dichotomies Of Mława, Poland, Over Time: Misplaced Concreteness, Individual Triumph, Social Tragedy, Joseph Drew
Sociological Dichotomies Of Mława, Poland, Over Time: Misplaced Concreteness, Individual Triumph, Social Tragedy, Joseph Drew
Comparative Civilizations Review
For many years, I have been an active member of the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations and Editor-in-Chief of its journal, the Comparative Civilizations Review. Since the 1960s, I have also been a university administrator and a professor, globe-trotting to learn about societies near and far, their rises and falls. Yet even though I lived and worked in Prague, as president of a university, not far from the Polish border, I had never set foot in that country, notwithstanding that my paternal grandfather came from there.

Although religiosity is commonly linked to marital satisfaction in sociological research, few studies have examined how it strengthens marital commitment among women of faith. This study explored the perspectives of religious, heterosexual married women using interviews in the United States from 196 highly religious couples with successful marriages. Three core themes emerged: (1) personal commitment—including the decision to marry, religious beliefs and practices, and the need for effort and sacrifice; (2) moral commitment—highlighting sexual relations before marriage, promises made before God, family, and friends, and views on fidelity and divorce; and (3) structural commitment— emphasizing the role of a religious …

Acoustic Characterization And Modeling Of Heated Supersonic Tactical Jet Aircraft And Launched Rockets, Logan Troy Mathews
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding and accurately modeling the acoustic sources and propagation of high-intensity tactical jet aircraft and rocket noise is essential for vehicle design, environmental impact assessment, and mitigation strategies. Despite progress in the understanding of these sources, significant challenges persist in both predictive modeling and noise mitigation. This dissertation advances both the characterization of full-scale supersonic tactical jet aircraft noise sources and the development of modern empirical prediction models for rocket launch noise. Across multiple measurement campaigns and modeling efforts, the work integrates advanced array signal processing, high-fidelity field measurements, and improved empirical methods to expand the physical understanding of source …
Executive Functioning And Mental Health In Emerging Adults: Type 1 Diabetes Status As A Moderator, Hannah Margot Mcdaniel
Executive Functioning And Mental Health In Emerging Adults: Type 1 Diabetes Status As A Moderator, Hannah Margot Mcdaniel
Theses and Dissertations
Emerging adults (ages 18-26) with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are especially vulnerable to diabetes management challenges when taking on increased disease responsibility during this critical period of development. They may experience higher cognitive and psychological demands compared to peers. The study examined whether having T1DM moderated the association between executive functioning (EF) and mental health symptoms (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress, and disordered eating) in emerging adults. Exploratory analyses investigated the associations between EF, disease management, and mental health symptoms. Participants were 35 emerging adults with T1DM and 35 healthy controls. Participants completed questionnaire measures of mental health and performance-based …

The Association Of Anxiety, Familial Dysfunction, And Child Emotion Regulation Between Family Therapy Sessions 1 And 4, Kaelie Noel Lemmon
Theses and Dissertations
Few studies address how relational factors may be interdependent and impact child-focused problems that could be collectively addressed in systemic family therapy. The current study utilized a cross-lagged panel model to explore the associations of parental anxiety, familial dysfunction, and child emotion regulation between four family therapy sessions. The study included 224 parents who sought family therapy and participated in the Marriage and Family Therapy Practice Research Network (MFT-PRN). Data were collected at two time points across four family therapy sessions. The findings indicated that higher levels of parental anxiety at intake were associated with higher familial dysfunction at session …
Mathematics Student Teachers' Curricular Reasoning During Planning, Erika Breann Miller
Mathematics Student Teachers' Curricular Reasoning During Planning, Erika Breann Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Teaching is a complex practice, in part because of all the decisions teachers make daily. This is especially true for student teachers who have little to no prior teaching experience to inform them about the decisions that need to be made in the classroom and how to reason through all those decisions as they plan and enact the lessons. Secondary mathematics student teachers were introduced to the Instructional Pyramid (Dingman et al., 2021) which organizes and maps teacher’s mathematical reasoning onto four elements of a classroom—teacher, student, mathematics, and curriculum—to examine which curricular reasoning aspects they use while planning mathematics …
Characterizing And Modeling The Nonlinear Behavior Of Additively Manufactured Trapped-Powder Dampers, Jonathan Knight Black
Characterizing And Modeling The Nonlinear Behavior Of Additively Manufactured Trapped-Powder Dampers, Jonathan Knight Black
Theses and Dissertations
Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) can be used to create metal parts with pockets of retained, unfused powder that serve as mechanical dampers. These trapped-powder dampers show promise for reducing the amplitude of vibrations at resonance by orders of magnitude. However, little is currently understood about the nonlinearity and repeatability of trapped-powder dampers, meaning that the design process currently consists of expensive trial-and-error prototyping and iteration. The present work contributes a corpus of experimental measurements for rectangular beams with trapped-powder dampers of various dimensions and locations. Preliminary testing revealed the presence of a memory effect which we hypothesize to be …
Investigating Radiation Induced Rowhammer And Retention Failures In Dram, Tyler Ricks
Investigating Radiation Induced Rowhammer And Retention Failures In Dram, Tyler Ricks
Theses and Dissertations
It is desirable for DRAM devices to be used in harsh radiation environments. Exposure to radiation causes DRAM cells to lose their retention time as their ability to store charge effectively declines. Exposure also worsens the effect of disturbance that causes neighboring cells to flip when a row is opened multiple times: an effect known as the Row Hammer Effect. This thesis evaluates the impact of radiation-induced memory cell degradation by comparing memory cell's retention time and their resilience to the row hammer vulnerability. Three generations of DRAM were placed under a neutron radiation beam. Sections of the irradiated devices …
Ai-Enabled Innovations In Automated Essay Scoring And Feedback Systems, Michael J. Murff
Ai-Enabled Innovations In Automated Essay Scoring And Feedback Systems, Michael J. Murff
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the evolution and educational implementation of Automated Essay Scoring (AES) systems, with particular focus on generative artificial intelligence integration in educational assessment. Through a two-article format, this research addresses the persistent gap between technical capability and educational adoption that has characterized AES development over seven decades. The first article presents a comprehensive methodological review analyzing 122 studies spanning AES evolution from foundational computational linguistics through contemporary hybrid systems. Despite achieving strong correlations with human scoring, modern AES systems face resistance due to validity concerns and misalignment with pedagogical values, revealing an "adoption paradox" where technical sophistication often …
First-Year Writing Student Perceptions Of Graduate Student Instructor Authority, Lacey Madison Hamilton
First-Year Writing Student Perceptions Of Graduate Student Instructor Authority, Lacey Madison Hamilton
Theses and Dissertations
Graduate student instructors (GSIs) are trusted to teach first-year writing (FYW) courses across U.S. campuses, yet many still wonder how their undergraduate students actually perceive their authority, especially when they're new to teaching or sharing a classroom with full-time faculty. While previous research has explored how GSIs view their own authority and how institutional structures shape their roles, we know far less about what students of these GSIs think. This study aims to fill that gap. Building on Reed and Ostenson's work in Big Comp, I conducted a mixed-methods study in Fall 2024 to hear directly from FYW students about …

Compact Heterogeneous Architectures And Algorithmic Methods For Enhanced Real-Time Digital True Time Delay Beamforming And Radar Applications, Nathan Lynn Burnett
Theses and Dissertations
Modern radar and signal processing systems require efficient computational architectures to handle increasing data rates while still being able to maintain dynamic configurability and complex tasks. This thesis presents and explores hardware and algorithmic approaches addressing these demands across several different applications. First, a low-cost tracking platform and architecture for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is developed, which provides detection and tracking capabilities, compliant with new FAA remote ID regulations. Second, a GPU-FPGA based digital true time delay beamformer is implemented to achieve real-time wideband radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation. Specifically this beamformer explores weight calculation and calibration through particle swarm …
A Novel High-Order Absorbing Boundary Condition For Elastic Multiple Scattering Problems, Jordan Gregory Sheppard
A Novel High-Order Absorbing Boundary Condition For Elastic Multiple Scattering Problems, Jordan Gregory Sheppard
Theses and Dissertations
Elastic waves are waves that propagate by causing deformations in an elastic medium such as metal, rock, or rubber. The main characteristic of elastic wave motion is the coexistence of multiple types of waves at once in the medium, including compressional and shear wave components. This type of motion can be used to study the impacts of physical phenomena such as earthquakes. In this paper, we discuss our research on the time-harmonic scattering of elastic waves in a medium by multiple circular cylindrical obstacles that the wave cannot penetrate. Using the Helmholtz decomposition, we break down the vector-valued physical system …
Versatile Waveform Generation And Clocking Techniques For Rfsoc-Based Digital Designs, Michael David Jones
Versatile Waveform Generation And Clocking Techniques For Rfsoc-Based Digital Designs, Michael David Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Within an ever-evolving radio-frequency (RF) environment, designers are required to adapt systems to increasingly constricted parameters. The available tools continually grow to match this need, but so does the complexity in using them. The radio-frequency system-on-chip (RFSoC) is an innovation that combines a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) with an integrated RF chain. Designing with an RFSoC allows for high-precision data transmission, sampling, and processing, but it can be difficult and time-consuming to develop specialized circuits. The open-source CASPER project aims to provide a library of abstracted block-design components to simplify the design process. An arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) is created …
