Theses and Dissertations
A new isothermal titration calorimeter has been designed to facilitate the study of heats of reaction and heats of solution at constant temperature. With this calorimeter, endothermic or exothermic processes can be studied at temperatures constant to ±0.0002°C. Heat effects are compensated by balancing the heat effect of the process taking place in the calorimeter against a variable heat and a constant cooling Peltier device. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and the heat of dilution of aqueous HClO_4 solutions. For these systems heats were measured to an accuracy of ±0.02 calorie. Nesting Ecology And Behavior Of The Golden Eagle In West Central Utah, Franz J. Camenzind
Theses and Dissertations
The Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos canadensis Linn. is facing extinction in much of its range. In the Western Hemisphere its numbers are restricted primarily to the mountainous regions west of the 99th meridian, from extreme northern Alaska to northern Mexico (Hobbie and Cade, 1962) and from timberline in Colorado to below sea level in Death Valley, California (Summer, 1929a).
An Investigation Of A Thyroidal Control Of Water Balance In The Leopard Frog, Rana Pipiens, Scott Mcclung Martin
An Investigation Of A Thyroidal Control Of Water Balance In The Leopard Frog, Rana Pipiens, Scott Mcclung Martin
Theses and Dissertations
A possible thyroidal control of water balance in the leopard frog, Rana pipiens, was investigated by (1) chemically thyroidectomizing intact animals by chronic injections of the goitrogen, 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU ), or making animals hyperthyroid with thyroxine injections, and (2) dehydration of the frogs in a flow of air to enhance the rate of water loss through the skin, followed by rehydration in tap water until the animals regained their former weight. Radioiodine was employed in limited studies on the frog thyroid gland to ascertain the effects on thyroidal function caused by PTU. The frogs were dehydrated in desiccators in which …

Osteology And Myology Of Phrynosoma P. Platyrhinos Girard And Phrynosoma D. Hernandesi Girard, Richard L. Jenkins, Wilmer W. Tanner
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
This study confirms the work of Etheridge (1964) in suggesting the peculiarity of the genus Phrynosoma within the family Iguanidae. The anterior osteology and myology of Phrynosoma platyrhinos platyrhinos Girard and Phrynosoma douglassi hernandesi Girard indicate Phrynosoma to be highly specialized and to differ significantlv from the Iguanid structure as portrayed by Oelrich (1956), Robison and Tanner (1962), and Avery and Tanner (1964). They also differ because of: ( 1 ) absence of lacrimal and postfrontal bones; (2) occurrence of occipital (also mandibular and temporal) spines; (3) posterodorsal shift of the skull elements; (4) divided nature of the M. sternohyoideus, …

During the period from June, 1966, to September, 1967, 27 amphibians of two species, 446 reptiles of eight species, 561 birds of 81 species, and 4050 mammals of 26 species were examined for ectoparasites at the National Reactor Testing Station in southern Idaho. Of seven species of ticks collected, the predominant one was Ixodes kingi, found on mammals of 12 species. Next in abundance was Dermacentor andersoni found on birds of three species and mammals of 16 species. Haemaphysalis leporispalustris was taken from birds of 10 species and six spvecies of mammals. Four other species of Ixodes were taken from …
Notes On The Fern Family Matoniaceae From The Western United States, Samuel R. Rushforth
Notes On The Fern Family Matoniaceae From The Western United States, Samuel R. Rushforth
Theses and Dissertations
A Cretaceous fern flora haas been recently discovered near Westwater, Grand County, Utah. Among specimens collected from Westwater are many forms related to extant members of the fern family Matoniaceae. This family was widely distributed geographically throughout most of the Mesozoic Era, and matoniaceous ferns have been collected from several fossil localities in the United States. The Matoniaceae was especially important in the United States during Lower Cretaceous times. Five species, Matonidium brownii Rushforth, Matonidium lanceopennis Rushforth, Matonidium galleyi (Miner) Rushforth, Matonidium americanum Berry em. Rushforth, and Matonidium sp., and one variety, Matonidium brownii var. extenda Rushforth, are considered in …
An Investigation Of Column Efficiency And The Relationship To Liquid Phase Distribution On Ultra-Low Loaded Glass Bead Gas Chromatographic Columns, Donald G. Nyberg
An Investigation Of Column Efficiency And The Relationship To Liquid Phase Distribution On Ultra-Low Loaded Glass Bead Gas Chromatographic Columns, Donald G. Nyberg
Theses and Dissertations
Studies have been made of column efficiencies, extra-column effects, the liquid phase mass transfer term (C_l), and liquid phase distribution at ultra-low liquid loadings on glass bead gas-liquid chromatographic columns. The advantages of using lightly loaded columns are described in detail along with a critical evaluation of the limitations of this liquid phase reduction ad infinitum. Theories have been presented by Giddings^22,23,25,30,32 which predict the mass transfer term (C_l) as a function of two extreme liquid phase distributions. The first equation assumes 100% "capillary" liquid held at the glass bead contact points and represents a very inefficient column. This prediction …
Studies On The Levels Of Acetylcholine In The Brains Of Thiamine-Deprived And Thiamine-Antagonized Rats, Darwin Leroy Cheney
Studies On The Levels Of Acetylcholine In The Brains Of Thiamine-Deprived And Thiamine-Antagonized Rats, Darwin Leroy Cheney
Theses and Dissertations
Thiamine deficiency has been reported to cause nerve degeneration in the peripheral nervous system and hemorrhage with associated cellular damage in the central nervous system (Prickett, 1934). Koedam (1958) observed convulsions in thiamine-deficient pigeons, but convulsions have only rarely been seen in rats (Gubler, 1961). Rats treated with the thiamine antagonist, pyrithiamine (PTh)* always develop ataxia and convulsions but these neurological symptoms have never been reported in those treated with oxythiamine (OTh), another thiamine antagonist (Gubler, 1961). Hosein, Chabrol, and Freedman (1966) concluded that neurological symptoms occur only when the brain thiamine content is diminished to 2.5%o r less of …
Elevational Occurrence Of The Ticks Dermacentor Andersoni And Dermacentor Parumapertus In Utah County, Utah, William J. Despain
Elevational Occurrence Of The Ticks Dermacentor Andersoni And Dermacentor Parumapertus In Utah County, Utah, William J. Despain
Theses and Dissertations
Considerable research on ticks has been done since it was discovered that the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, was a principal vector of Rocky Mountain spotted fevero Additional disease agents of man are also transmitted by D. andersoni. This tick and a closely related species, Dermacentor parumapertus Neuman, occur commonly in Utah. The two species are often closely associated, although D. andersoni is believed to occur in the mountains, whereas D. parumapertus is in the desert valleys. Diseases affecting animals in nature are transmitted by ticks of both species. Consequently, any interaction between the two may be influential …
Development Of The Marital Dissatisfaction Of Mormon College Couples Over The Early Stages Of The Family Life Cycle, Roy H. Marlowe
Development Of The Marital Dissatisfaction Of Mormon College Couples Over The Early Stages Of The Family Life Cycle, Roy H. Marlowe
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the relationship between stages of the family life cycle during the early years of marriage and marital dissatisfaction. From this basic goal the following three hypotheses were derived and tested:
I. Marital dissatisfaction for both husband and wife is less in the first stage than in the third stage of the family life cycle.
II. For both husband and wife the ideal spouse concept is the same in stage one as in stage three of the family life cycle.
III. For both husband and wife socially undesirable perceived spouse concepts are greater while socially desirable perceived spouse …
Transition From Laminar To Turbulent Flow For Dilute Guar Gum Solutions, Martin L. Palmer
Transition From Laminar To Turbulent Flow For Dilute Guar Gum Solutions, Martin L. Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
Solutions of many natural and synthetic polymers have been found to reduce turbulent friction losses in flow through pipes. The basic mechanism causing these reductions is not entirely understood although two general theories have been advanced.

The Effects Of Force Feeding On The Levels Of Pyruvate, Glucocorticoids And Glucose In The Blood And On Adrenal Weight In Thiamine-Deprived And Thiamine-Antagonized Rats, Ronald Adams Bitter
Theses and Dissertations
The discovery of a substance in rice polishings that was useful in preventing beriberi was first shown by Grijns and Vedder (Wuest, 1962). In 1926, Jansen and Donath (Wuest, 1962} crystallized this substance which was subsequently synthesized independently by Williams and Cline (1936} and Grewe (1936). This substance was named thiamine by Williams (1936) because of its structure having the vital thiazole ring and because it was an "essential amine."
A Taxonomic And Ecological Survey Of The Algae Of Lilly Lake, Ann C. Palmer
A Taxonomic And Ecological Survey Of The Algae Of Lilly Lake, Ann C. Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
A taxonomic and ecological survey of the algae of Lilly Lake in the Uinta Mountains, Utah, was carried on from June 1967 to November 1967. The lake is a typical acid bog lake with an average pH range of 4.5 to 6.9. Extremes of pH in the alkaline range were present due to additional factors. Algae identified included 96 genera and 208 species. These were found in many different types of microenvironmental niches. The main factors which limited the algae to definite areas of the lake were pH, water temperature, light available, and type of substrate. The predominant algal genera …
A Similarity Model For Flow In A Turbulent Boundary Layer, Earl Clark Lemmon
A Similarity Model For Flow In A Turbulent Boundary Layer, Earl Clark Lemmon
Theses and Dissertations
One of the basic goals in engineering is to generate models which will provide a means for analytically predicting observed phenomenon. Such a model is often modified several times to obtain better results. The purpose of this study was to generate a model for an equilibrium turbulent boundary layer for steady flow over a flat plate and compare the results obtained by using the model with experimental data. Part of the objective was to also suggest ways in which the model could be modified to obtain better results.
Developing Turbulent Flow In An Annulus, Dwight H. Kelly
Developing Turbulent Flow In An Annulus, Dwight H. Kelly
Theses and Dissertations
Turbulent flows are encountered in nearly every case where fluid motion is involved. Since turbulent flow through relatively short annular sections occurs frequently in practical applications, e.g., flow through heat exchangers, axial flow turbomachinery and jet aircraft engines, there is a need for detailed information on this subject.
