An Assay Chamber For Quantitative Analysis Of Nitrogen Fixation Using Intact Plants, Thomas Adrie Leslie Apr 1975

An Assay Chamber For Quantitative Analysis Of Nitrogen Fixation Using Intact Plants, Thomas Adrie Leslie

Theses and Dissertations

A unique assay system for quantitative analysis of biological nitrogen fixation by intact plants has been constructed and successfully tested. With the system, it has been possible to detect acetylene reduction by intact legumes in situ under laboratory conditions. This assay method is designed to approximate field conditions and in spite of possible procedural errors in sampling, background noise of the gas chromatograph and ethylene contamination of the acetylene gas used in the assay, this method is sensitive ·enough to detect as little as 1 ppm enrichment of ethylene gas as a result of acetylene reduction by intact soybean plants. …

The Kinetics And Mechanism Of A Free Radical Decay In Aqueous Solution, Denzel Lee Fillmore Apr 1975

The Kinetics And Mechanism Of A Free Radical Decay In Aqueous Solution, Denzel Lee Fillmore

Theses and Dissertations

The decomposition of nitrosyl disulfonate ion was studied in strongly alkaline solution of 10-2 to 5 m sodium hydroxide. The decomposition was found to be first-order in both hydroxide and nitrosyl disulfonate ions. A multi-step mechanism involving sulfite ion, sulfite ion radical and nitrosyl monosulfonate ion radical as intermediates was proposed, with the initiating step being the SN2 replacement of a sulfite ion by a hydroxide ion. The rate constant for the initiating step ranged from 1.2 x 10-7 to 2.25 x 10-5 M-1s-1 for the solution concentration range of the study. The products of the decomposition were identified as …

Composition, Time, And Size Distributions Of Airborne Particulate Material In Utah Valley, Douglas R. Lawson Apr 1975

Composition, Time, And Size Distributions Of Airborne Particulate Material In Utah Valley, Douglas R. Lawson

Theses and Dissertations

The Lundgren impactor is used to determine the variations in time and size distributions of particulate matter in Utah Valley. Charged particle X-ray fluorescence is employed in this study to determine elemental concentrations. Air samples are taken during two 24-hour periods in downtown Provo, 24 hours near U.S. Steel Corporation, Geneva Works, and 12 hours at Lindon Elementary School, and diurnal particulate variations are compared. The amounts of lead and bromine are four times greater on a weekday than on a Sunday in downtown Provo, suggesting the effect of the automobile on atmospheric particulate concentrations. Paraffin coated impaction surfaces are …

Alcohol Assisted Hydrocarbon Fuels: A Comparison Of Exhaust Emissions, Power Output And Fuel Consumption Using Static And Dynamic Engine Test Facilities, Dwight J. Bushnell

Theses and Dissertations

America’s energy crunch— something new for a country that has been used to great affluence. America’s smog— an eye stinging, lung burning situation which the Environmental Protection Agency has "promised" to rectify. These are two outstanding problems that face the engineer and scientist of today. The end of the era of cheap gasoline has brought the beginnings of a quiet revolution to Detroit: an improvement in the efficiency, economy and emission level of the American automobile. Word has penetrated to the automotive engineers that the emissions level, fuel economy and automobile safety are the prime design considerations for the automobile …

Chemotaxonomical Comparison Of Astragalus Megacarpus, Astragalus Beckwithii, And Astragalus Oophorus In Utah, Marzilla Wright Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation was concerned with the taxonomic relationship between Astragalus beckwithii (Torr. & Gray) var. beckwithii, Astragalus oophorus (S. Wats) var. caulescens (Jones) Jones, and Astragalus megacarpus (A. Gray). An attempt was made to relate some chemical constituents and the toxic effects on rats to the taxonomy. A number of parameters were used; rat toxicity, lipid analysis, selenium atomic absorption, various salts and glucose percentages, as well as the usual morphological measurements taken from herbarium specimens, field observations, and pollen measurements. While the weight of the data indicates that A. beckwithii is a type of intermediary or intergressory product of …

Breeding Biology And Ecology Of The Peregrine Falcon (Falco Peregrinus) In West Greenland, William A. Burnham Apr 1975

Breeding Biology And Ecology Of The Peregrine Falcon (Falco Peregrinus) In West Greenland, William A. Burnham

Theses and Dissertations

During the last twenty years marked declines in Peregrine Falcon populations have occurred in many parts of the world (Hickey, 1969). During recent years the peregrine has been placed on the list of Endangered Species. Several factors have been suggested as the cause of its decline. These include changing climatic conditions (Porter and White, 1973), human disturbance (Mattox, pers. comm.), and introduction of chlorinated hydrocarbons as pesticides into the environment (Ratcliffe, 1970). The third factor, introduction of chlorinated hydrocarbons, has occurred on the American, European and Asian continents. Even peregrines nesting in locations far from human population concentrations are exposed …

Evolution Of The Sceloporine Lizards (Iguanidae), Kenneth R. Larsen, Wilmer W. Tanner Mar 1975

Evolution Of The Sceloporine Lizards (Iguanidae), Kenneth R. Larsen, Wilmer W. Tanner

Great Basin Naturalist

Phylogenetic relationships among Sceloporine genera are briefly discussed. Species relationships within the genus Sceloporus are analyzed, and evolutionary lines of descent are proposed. The genus Sceloporus is composed of three monophyletic groups: Group I, the most primitive, probably developed from Sator-like ancestral stock in Miocene times. This group speciated from stock similar to Sceloporus gadoviae in southern Mexico to S. merriami in the North and contains 7 species in 3 species groups. We propose that these species be included in the genus Lysoptychus Cope. Group II arose from Group I and evolved from centrally located Sceloporus pictus in all …

The Identity Of Bocourt's Lizard Eumeces Capito 1879, Hobart M. Smith, Rosella B. Smith, Jean Guibé Mar 1975

The Identity Of Bocourt's Lizard Eumeces Capito 1879, Hobart M. Smith, Rosella B. Smith, Jean Guibé

Great Basin Naturalist

Eumeces capito Boucourt, 1879, is a senior synonym of Eumeces xanthi Günther, 1889. No exception to application of the Law of Priority is recommended in this case. The type locality of E. capito as originally published ("La côte oriental des Etats-Unis") is erroneous. Undoubtedly the correct locality is China, but it is not restricted at present.

History Of Four Mormon Landmarks In Western New York: The Joseph Smith Farm, Hill Cumorah, The Martin Harris Farm, And The Peter Whitmer, Sr., Farm, Rand H. Packer

Theses and Dissertations

As the church returned to Western New York in the early 1900s there was much prejudice against Mormonism. The twenty-four year mission of the Willard Bean family was instrumental in establishing a friendly atmosphere in the Palmyra, New York area and in regaining four historic land marks to the ownership of the Church.

It is still uncertain if the present Joseph Smith Sr., home was completed enough for the family to live in by the time the Angel Moroni visited Joseph Smith. Since 1881 the Sacred Grove was considered the woods where Joseph Smith had his First Vision. The term …

A Comparison Of Mission Programs Used In The Three Language Training Missions Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Rawn Arthur Wallgren Jan 1975

A Comparison Of Mission Programs Used In The Three Language Training Missions Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Rawn Arthur Wallgren

Theses and Dissertations

Since the instigation of the first language training mission in December, 1961, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been vitally interested in the language instruction of its missionaries. As the number of missionaries called to foreign missions increased, the need for more facilities and instruction grew rapidly. During the week of January 18, 1969, Elder Spencer W. Kimball, Chairman of the Church Missionary Committee, announced expansion of the language training mission program that would go into effect on February 8 of that same year. Languages would not only be taught at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, but …

The Creation, Development, And Design Of A Course For Providing Missionaries At The Language Training Mission In Provo, Utah, With The Necessary Communication Skills To Teach The Gospel To The Hearing Impaired Who Use The American Sign Language, Byron F. Crookston

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a course outline to begin the teaching of the American Sign Language at the Language Training Mission in Provo, Utah. Presently there is no program offered to train missionaries to teach the eight discussions to the hearing impaired who use sign language and fingerspelling to communicate. This study attempts to provide such a course outline that can later be developed into a complete training program.

To establish a criterion for this course, existing theories and curriculum guides for teaching sign language were reviewed and summarized. A survey for training interpreters, particularly in …

For God And Country: Mormon Chaplains During World War Ii, Richard Maher Jan 1975

For God And Country: Mormon Chaplains During World War Ii, Richard Maher

Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) is a lay church inasmuch as it has no professionally trained ministers. Because of this, the Chaplains Corps during World War II questioned whether members of the Mormon faith could serve effectively as chaplains. The answer to the effectiveness of Mormon chaplains is found in their performance as many received high praise from their superiors.
During the Second World War, the Mormon Church provided the military services with a total of 45 chaplains, and although only 45 served, they saw duty in all theaters of war and served at such major …

An Analysis Of The Doctrinal Teachings Of President George Albert Smith, Robert K. Mcintosh Jan 1975

An Analysis Of The Doctrinal Teachings Of President George Albert Smith, Robert K. Mcintosh

Theses and Dissertations

George Albert Smith, Eighth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a General Authority during some of the most traumatic years in world history. His teachings and doctrines were practical, rather than philosophical or theoretical, and were applicable to a time when the world needed a message of hope and love. The two key ideas of his teachings were based on the two great commandments of Christ: love of God and love of neighbor. In addition, he also gave vital messages on the importance of obedience to God's laws, the character and attributes of God, the …

Basic Principles Of Orally Communicating The Gospel As Found In The Doctrine And Covenants, Reed Amussen Benson Jan 1975

Basic Principles Of Orally Communicating The Gospel As Found In The Doctrine And Covenants, Reed Amussen Benson

Theses and Dissertations

In view of the large lay ministry of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who are called upon to preach and teach the gospel, this study was undertaken to see if the latter-day volume of scripture, the Doctrine and Covenants, revealed basic principles associated with the oral communication of the gospel.

These principles became evident through the frequency that they were mentioned and the emphasis they received. They were (1) righteousness, in particular diligence, humility and meekness, prayer and fasting; (2) knowledge; (3) authority; (4) the right means of communicating; (5) the correct message--with the gospel, testimony, and …

Reasons For Non-Enrollment And Low Attendance In Lds Early Morning Seminary At Minneapolis-St. Paul, Wayne P. Smith Jan 1975

Reasons For Non-Enrollment And Low Attendance In Lds Early Morning Seminary At Minneapolis-St. Paul, Wayne P. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to determine why only about one half of the potential Latter-day Saint students in grades nine through twelve in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area enroll in early morning seminary each year, why so many students attended poorly or discontinued part way through 1973-74, and what effect the increase in the price of gasoline had on attendance. About 40 percent of the potential students and their parents, all eight of their bishops, and all thirteen seminary teachers responded to a mailed questionnaire.

The main reasons for non-enrollment were inactivity in the LDS Church, disinterest in seminary, and difficulty finding …

Joseph Smith The Colonizer, Brent L. Winward Jan 1975

Joseph Smith The Colonizer, Brent L. Winward

Theses and Dissertations

In written history, Joseph Smith's colonizing efforts have been overshadowed by the Mormon settlement of the west. No one has really made a study of Joseph Smith as a colonizer. To this founder of the Mormon way of life, religion was more than a code of Sunday ethics. According to President Smith, man was created as an actual child of God and his Heavenly Father was concerned with providing for all his needs. Therefore, the revealed word of God in addition to listing a spiritual code of ethics, also contained provisions for the physical, social, political, economical, educational, safety needs, …

The Significance Of Scale Characters In Evaluation Of The Lizard Genera Gerrhonotus, Elgaria, And Barisia, James W. Waddick, Hobart M. Smith Dec 1974

The Significance Of Scale Characters In Evaluation Of The Lizard Genera Gerrhonotus, Elgaria, And Barisia, James W. Waddick, Hobart M. Smith

Great Basin Naturalist

Data taken on external scale characters of 1003 specimens representing nine of the sixteen species of Gerrhonotus sensu Stebbins, 1958, strongly indicate that Tihen's 1949 arrangement of those species in three genera (Gerrhonotus, Elgaria, Barisia) is valid. Misinterpretation of the identity of the head scales in various species of this group has led erroneously to disregard of them as indicators of relationships. Actually the scales are as constant as in most other lizards and seemingly provide firm clues to natural associations.
