Ecological Differences Of C3 And C4 Plant Species From Central Utah In Habitats And Mineral Composition, C. Morden, Jack D. Brotherson, Bruce N. Smith
Ecological Differences Of C3 And C4 Plant Species From Central Utah In Habitats And Mineral Composition, C. Morden, Jack D. Brotherson, Bruce N. Smith
Great Basin Naturalist
Six study sites were established in each of three community life form types (grass, forb, and shrub) containing as dominants or subdominants either C3 and/or C4 plants. Soil and vegetation samples were analyzed for total nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium, zinc, iron, copper, and manganese. Discriminant analysis and analysis of variance statistics were used to evaluate differences in mineral content of soils and plant tissues. C4 plants in all study sites assimilated higher concentrations of potassium, iron, and calcium than did C3 plants. Forbs in all sites contained the highest concentrations of minerals, followed by …

Fall Diet Of Blue Grouse In Oregon, John A. Crawford, Walt Van Dyke, S. Mark Meyers, Thomas F. Haensly
Great Basin Naturalist
The early fall diet of Oregon blue grouse (Dendragapus obscurus pallidus) from Wallowa County, Oregon, was determined from 145 crops obtained during 1981 and 1982. Of more than 50 plant and animal foods in the diet, short-horned grasshoppers (Acrididae), prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola), yellow salsify (Tragopogon dubius), wild buck-wheat (Eriogonum spp.), and snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) occurred in 30% or more of the crops and collectively amounted to 68% of the diet by weight. Seven of the 12 most common foods were consumed differentially by the four sex and age …

The pickup on the mud road behind us pings as it cools. "Do you want to shoot one, Stevey?" Dad says. "You can if you want to." Steam comes out of his mouth when he speaks, and he sniffs loudly. "No," I say, standing close to him so that I can bury my face in his warm flannel shirt. "I think he's just scared," Mike says, cracking the double-barrel open and inserting two shells. A kingfisher makes its laughing sound as it flies down the river channel on the other side of the brush.

The set is dark and a congregation can be heard singing "Gloria Patri. " Shortly, however, whispers can be heard growing louder over the music. They are unintelligible, chaotic, and insistent. just as a word or two can be understood, a woman's voice rises above the intoning of the traditional Latin Mass.

The Wife Of Bath And The Scholastic Concept Of Operatio, Joseph E. Grennen
Quidditas
The loathly lady of Chaucer's Wife of Bath's Tale delivers a lecture to her reluctant swain which is remarkably gracious and persuasive, although hardly unconventional. Her sentiments, which find a parallel in Dante's Convivio, may be summed up in a phrase: Virtue is the true nobility. True virtue, furthermore, is a legacy from Christ, not an inheritance passed on with titles and wealth. The chief difficulty facing a reader is to find a way of reconciling this view with the cynical, maverick personality established for Alice of Bath in her own prologue. We might suppose that Chaucer is here …

A Cluster Analytic Study In Intercultural Communication Of Rokeach's Intrumental Values Among Lds Returned Missionaries, Lisa Bradford
A Cluster Analytic Study In Intercultural Communication Of Rokeach's Intrumental Values Among Lds Returned Missionaries, Lisa Bradford
Theses and Dissertations
Although much has been done in the study of values several important questions relative to the study of values remain. This thesis discusses the questions of what happens to the value systems of those who leave their culture for extended periods of time, do the perceptions of value systems become more accurate after exposure, and how does religiosity affect value systems.
The study was based on the idea that each of the cultures being tested (Latin and United States) had a distinct, general value system which differentiated it from the other and yet unified the individuals within it. In this …

Old Testament And Related Studies, Hugh Nibley
Maxwell Institute Publications
In December 1832, the Lord instructed the Prophet Joseph Smith, “Seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.”
Few members of the Church have followed that admonition as faithfully as has Hugh Nibley, emeritus professor of ancient history at Brigham Young University. As a young man he memorized vast portions of Shakespeare and studied Old English, Latin, Greek and other languages. As a student at Berkeley, in he began reading the southwest corner of the ninth level of the …

Enoch The Prophet, Hugh Nibley
Maxwell Institute Publications
In the Book of Moses, part of the Latter-day Saint scriptural canon known as the Pearl of Great Price, are what the Prophet Joseph Smith entitled “extracts from the prophecy of Enoch.” These scriptures, says the eminent LDS scholar Hugh Nibley, “supply us with the most valuable control yet on the bona fides of the Prophet. . . . We are to test. . . . ‘How does it compare with records known to be authentic?’ The excerpts offer the nearest thing to a perfectly foolproof test—neat, clear-cut, and decisive—of Joseph Smith’s claim to inspiration.”

Internal Control Evaluation: A Computational Model Of The Review Process, Rayman D. Meservy, Andrew D. Bailey Jr, Paul E. Johnson

This study investigated the strategies by which experienced auditors evaluate systems of internal accounting controls. The research method included: (1) observations, using concurrent protocols, of a small sample of practicing auditors performing the internal control evaluation task; (2) extensive interviews with one of the practicing auditors; (3) formalization of auditor processes as a computational model; and (4) validation of the model. The simulation model was Im· plemented as an expert system and tuned to one auditor. The model output consists of a trace of the model processing including: (1) rec• ommendatlons for specific controls to be compliance tested; and (2) …
