Family Life Education In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The 20th Century: A Historical Review, Ray W. Stringham

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reviewed selected educational literature in almost 350 texts published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) from General Authorities and manuals which included content curriculum in adult family life education; for the adult women's organization (Relief Society); for the men's Melchizedek Priesthood; and for parents instructing their children at home (Family Home Evening).

Topics were ranked by century, according to frequencies of occurrence (FO) in the five major publications. Topics were also summarized by each decade. Tables were provided which summarized the top 40 of 78 topics identified. Recurring Themes suggest family is the basis …

Optimal Response To Periodic Shortage: Engineering/Economic Analysis For A Large Urban Water District, Anthony Fisher, David Fullerton, Nile Hatch, Peter Reinelt Jan 1992

Optimal Response To Periodic Shortage: Engineering/Economic Analysis For A Large Urban Water District, Anthony Fisher, David Fullerton, Nile Hatch, Peter Reinelt

Faculty Publications

The problem addressed by this study is how a large urban water district can best respond to a drought or the prospect of a drought. Specifically, what is the least cost combination of alternatives to meet periodic shortages? A solution to this problem may involve structural approaches (such as developing new local storage capacity), a mix of structural and nonstructural (such as conjunctive use combined with water exchanges or sales), or purely nonstructural approaches (such as changes in water pricing). The application is to the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), which includes portions of Alameda and Contra Costa counties …

The Medieval Librarian: Information Management In The Southwest German Empire At The Close Of The Middle Ages, Albert Winkler Jan 1992

The Medieval Librarian: Information Management In The Southwest German Empire At The Close Of The Middle Ages, Albert Winkler

Faculty Publications

The direct precursor of the modern librarian or archivist was the medieval scribe or notary. This person was responsible for the production or identification, storage, and retrieval of information and was the first information manager since antiquity to use vernacular languages in documents and books. The medieval information manager was highly educated and was often a prestigious and powerful official in whom important information and state secrets were entrusted. The civic secular scribes borrowed much from church practices but also worked out their own methods of source composition, verification, arrangement, and preservation. These procedures developed into many of the practices …

“Names, Hypocoristic,” In Anchor Bible Dictionary, Dana M. Pike Jan 1992

“Names, Hypocoristic,” In Anchor Bible Dictionary, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

A hypocoristicon is generally a single-element name resulting from the shortening of an originally longer one. Hebrew names and Semitic names in general, were often composed of two elements (or, as was often the case in Akkadian names and sometimes the case with West Semitic ones, three elements) which formed a nominal or verbal sentence.

The construction of expert systems typically require the availability of expertise that can be modeled. However, there are many important problems where no expertise exists, yet there is a wealth of data indicating results in different situations. Machine learning algorithms attempt to discover rules which capture the regularities that exists in such data.

Two New Species Of Aurealcaulis (Osmundaceae) From Northwestern New Mexico, William D. Tidwell, David A. Medlyn

Great Basin Naturalist

Two new osmundaceous species, Aurealcaulis moorei and A. bransonii, are described from the San Juan Basin of northwestern New Mexico. The area from which they were collected is uncertain, but it is presumed they came from the Lower Eocene San Jose Formation near Angel Peak, southeast of Bloomfield, New Mexico. The species are characterized by having a heterogeneous (A. moorei) to homogeneous (A. bransonii) pith, non- or partial closure of their leaf gaps, exarch protoxylem clusters, formation of their C-shaped leaf traces by fusion of two segments from adjacent xylem strands in their inner cortices, …

Alkaloidal Relationships In The Genus Arctomecon (Papaveraceae) And Herbivory In A. Humilis, Douglas A. Raynie, Deanna R. Nelson, Kimball T. Harper Dec 1991

Alkaloidal Relationships In The Genus Arctomecon (Papaveraceae) And Herbivory In A. Humilis, Douglas A. Raynie, Deanna R. Nelson, Kimball T. Harper

Great Basin Naturalist

The previously reported alkaloids (including protopines, benzophenanthridines, tetrahydrobenzylisoquinolines, and protoberberines) of the genus Arctomecon (Papaveraceae) are discussed in relation to their distribution in the plant kingdom, in the Papaveraceae, and among the three species of Arctomecon. The biological activity of these alkaloids is discussed, and possible implications for herbivore and plant-insect interactions in A. humilis are presented.

Holocene Bison From Arches National Park, Southeastern Utah, Jim I. Mead, Saxon E. Sharpe, Larry D. Agenbroad Dec 1991

Holocene Bison From Arches National Park, Southeastern Utah, Jim I. Mead, Saxon E. Sharpe, Larry D. Agenbroad

Great Basin Naturalist

An artifact constructed from a bison (Bison bison) hornsheath was recovered from the surface of a sandstone shelter also containing skeletal remains of bison and bighorn (Ovis Canadensis). Radiocarbon dating of bison, bighorn, and the artifact indicate that all co-occurred on the central Colorado Plateau, southeastern Utah, either between A. D. 1405 and A. D. 1420, or between A. D. 1535 and A. D. 1605. Skeletal remains of the bison imply that the animal was of the local faunal community during the transition between Protohistoric and Historic time.

Habitat Use And Food Selection Of Small Mammals Near A Sagebrush/Crested Wheatgrass Interface In Southeastern Idaho, David K. Koehler, Stanley H. Anderson Oct 1991

Habitat Use And Food Selection Of Small Mammals Near A Sagebrush/Crested Wheatgrass Interface In Southeastern Idaho, David K. Koehler, Stanley H. Anderson

Great Basin Naturalist

Habitat use and food selection data were collected for deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), montane voles (Microtus montanus), Ord's kangaroo rats (Dipodomys ordii), and Townsend's ground squirrels (Spermophilus townsendii) near a sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata )/crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum) interface in southeastem Idaho. Significantly more captures occurred in the native sagebrush habitat than in areas planted in crested wheatgrass or in disturbed sites. Crested wheatgrass, a prolific seed producer, still accounted for over 30% of the total captures. Montane voles and Townsend's ground squirrels (during periods of aboveground activity) used the …

Habitat Evaluation Procedure For Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep In The Intermountain West, Tom S. Smith, Jerran T. Flinders, David S. Winn Oct 1991

Habitat Evaluation Procedure For Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep In The Intermountain West, Tom S. Smith, Jerran T. Flinders, David S. Winn

Great Basin Naturalist

Several habitat evaluation procedures have been developed for bighorn sheep. However, none of these procedures specifically addresses the Rocky Mountain subspecies nor analyzes both the quantity and quality of potential bighorn habitat with regard to minimum viable population (MVP) criteria. This bighorn habitat evaluation procedure combines (1) a quantitative assessment of bighorn range to determine if there are adequate quantities of resources to support an MVP of bighorn sheep, and (2) a qualitative assessment of a range to predict the probable density of bighorns the range can support. Extensive literature review, intensive bighorn research, and a modeling tool, pattern recognition …

Physical Characteristics Of Blue Grouse Winter Use-Trees And Roost Sites, Peter J. Pekins, Frederick G. Lindzey, James A. Gessaman Oct 1991

Physical Characteristics Of Blue Grouse Winter Use-Trees And Roost Sites, Peter J. Pekins, Frederick G. Lindzey, James A. Gessaman

Great Basin Naturalist

Physical characteristics of winter use-trees and roost sites of Blue Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) were studied in northeastern Utah. Blue Grouse selectively roosted in the largest Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) trees during the day and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) trees at night. Diurnal and nocturnal roosts were typically adjacent to tree trunks in the lower two-thirds of trees. Nocturnal roosts provided greater canopy and denser shelter than diurnal roosts. Roost site selection was consistent with occupation of favorable microhabitat, particularly at night, and foraging strategy during the day. Timber management strategies should perpetuate large trees within …

A Self-Organizing Binary Decision Tree For Incrementally Defined Rule-Based Systems, Douglas M. Campbell, Tony R. Martinez Sep 1991

A Self-Organizing Binary Decision Tree For Incrementally Defined Rule-Based Systems, Douglas M. Campbell, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

This paper presents an adaptive self-organizing concurrent system (ASOCS) model for massively parallel processing of incrementally defined rule systems in such areas as adaptive logic, robotics, logical inference, and dynamic control. An ASOCS is an adaptive network composed of many simple computing elements operating asynchronously and in parallel. This paper focuses on adaptive algorithm 3 (AA3) and details its architecture and learning algorithm. It has advantages over previous ASOCS models in simplicity, implementability, and cost. An ASOCS can operate in either a data processing mode or a learning mode. During the data processing mode, an ASOCS acts as a parallel …
