Swiss American Historical Society Review
Finally I get to write you a few lines from duty. As Papa probably has already informed you, I went from Basel to Monthal, where I met Mama and Werner, as well as Rosa and Manja Labhart from Moscow. Werner was very happy. He is thin but looks strong and healthy. He did not want to answer my question of whether he would like to come back to America with me after the war. But I am decided about bringing him back with me. On the same evening I also visited Onkel Hermann and David in Zurich. I also met …

Coordinated Intelligent Control Via Epistemic Utility Theory, Wynn C. Stirling
Coordinated Intelligent Control Via Epistemic Utility Theory, Wynn C. Stirling
Faculty Publications
An approach to local reactive coordinated intelligent control based on the concept of an epistemic system, together with a principle of action that may be exercised locally, is presented. An epistemic system provides a mechanism for agents to characterize their knowledge corpora, options, goals, and beliefs. Levi's rule of epistemic utility provides a principle of action for decision making by comparing the informational value of rejection with the belief of correctness. Decisions are made locally and reactively, rather than globally. Coordination is implemented between agents by sharing and learning the epistemic systems of other agents. The resulting coordination model is …
Simulation Modeling Of American Marten (Martes Americana) Populations: Vulnerability To Extinction, Robert C. Lacy, Tim W. Clark
Simulation Modeling Of American Marten (Martes Americana) Populations: Vulnerability To Extinction, Robert C. Lacy, Tim W. Clark
Great Basin Naturalist
American marten (Martes americana) are medium-sized mammalian carnivores inhabiting forest communities across northern North America. Martens are susceptible to local extinction from habitat alterations, trapping, and other factors. We (RCL) developed a population model called VORTEX to estimate extinction probabilities for marten populations as a management tool. The model permits managers to simulate various levels of timber harvesting, commercial trapping, and other factors to estimate their effects on marten populations. This paper describes this model and illustrates its benefits by using marten data from the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem of northwestern Wyoming. Results are preliminary. Populations of 50 and …
1993 Update, Checklist Of The Vascular Plants Of Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, John R. Spence, Hayle Buchanan
1993 Update, Checklist Of The Vascular Plants Of Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, John R. Spence, Hayle Buchanan
Great Basin Naturalist
An updated checklist of the vascular flora of Bryce Canyon National Park is presented, including 458 species arranged in 232 genera and 73 families. Four species have been added to the part list based on 1991 fieldwork: Arabis perennans, Arceuthobium divaricatum, Gentiana parryi, and Haplopappus acaulis. Recent changes in nomenclature have been included, and several species identifications have been corrected. The six largest families are, in decreasing size, Asteraceace, Pocaceae, Fabaceae, Brassicaceae, Scrophulariaceae, and Rosaceae. Common names and an index are provided.
Mormon As Editor: A Study In Colophons, Headers, And Source Indicators, Thomas W. Mackay
Mormon As Editor: A Study In Colophons, Headers, And Source Indicators, Thomas W. Mackay
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The Book of Mormon contains various colophons and source indicators that signal documents or authors that Mormon and the writers of the small plates used, quoted, paraphrased, or summarized in composing the final text. Some of these headers have been italicized and separated out by the printer; others form an integral part of the text but could as well have been separated and italicized. Mormon’s extensive notation of sources is another set of evidence for the intricate and complex nature of the text and, simultaneously, of the magnitude of Mormon’s work as an ancient editor and historian.

The process used by Joseph Smith to translate the Book of Mormon from the plates involved both human effort and divine assistance through the seerstone and interpreters.
Lehi's Dream Of The Tree Of Life: Springboard To Prophecy, Corbin T. Volluz
Lehi's Dream Of The Tree Of Life: Springboard To Prophecy, Corbin T. Volluz
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Lehi’s dream of the tree of life is well known in Latter- day Saint circles. Its relationship to the vision of Nephi (1 Nephi 11–14), however, may not be so well known. This paper examines the proposition that Nephi’s vision was an expansive, prophetic interpretation of Lehi’s dream of the tree of life; gives an alternate interpretation of Lehi’s dream as a guide to the afterlife; and links Lehi’s dream, the Garden of Eden, and the temple.
The Radical Reformation Of The Reorganization Of The Restoration: Recent Changes In The Rlds Understanding Of The Book Of Mormon, Louis Midgley
The Radical Reformation Of The Reorganization Of The Restoration: Recent Changes In The Rlds Understanding Of The Book Of Mormon, Louis Midgley
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Beginning in the 1960s, the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS [now Community of Christ]) has modified its understanding of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith’s prophetic charisms. Where the RLDS were earlier permitted to read the Book of Mormon as nineteenth-century fiction, they are now encouraged by their leaders to do so, though they are still permitted to find in it, if they wish, some inspiring passages. These changes have been resisted by a conservative minority that has lost the battle for control of the Reorganization and now tends to worship outside RLDS congregations. …

Comments On The Book Of Mormon Witnesses: A Response To Jerald And Sandra Tanner, Matthew Roper
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Critics of the Book of Mormon frequently claim that some of the Book of Mormon witnesses later doubted or denied their testimony of the Book of Mormon. They also claim that the activities of the Three Witnesses while out of the church cast doubt upon the reliability of their earlier written testimony. I review evidence for these claims and also discuss the issue of what may constitute a witness of the Book of Mormon and whether the witnesses ever doubted or denied their testimony of the Book of Mormon. Evidence for later disbelief in the Book of Mormon by the …

Sariah In The Elephantine Papyri, Jeffrey R. Chadwick
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The Book of Mormon name Sariah does not appear as a female name in the Bible but has now been identified in a reconstructed form in an Aramaic papyrus. A Jewish woman living at Elephantine in Upper Egypt during the fifth century BC was identified as Sariah daughter of Hoshea.

The Effect Of The Postdivorce Relationship On Paternal Involvement: A Longitudinal Analysis, Constance R. Ahrons, Richard B. Miller
Faculty Publications
Longitudinal analyses of data from 64 pairs of former spouses indicate that the quality of their postdivorce relationship had a significant impact on fathers' involvement with their children. The strength of the influence declined over time, however, as the patterns of interaction in the reorganized binuclear family became more stable.
Aquatic Habitats, Life History Observations, And Zoogeographic Considerations Of The Spotted Frog (Rana Pretiosa) In Tule Valley, Utah, Peter Hovingh
Aquatic Habitats, Life History Observations, And Zoogeographic Considerations Of The Spotted Frog (Rana Pretiosa) In Tule Valley, Utah, Peter Hovingh
Great Basin Naturalist
Four populations of the spotted frog, Rana pretiosa, occur in western Bonneville Basin. Only the Tule Valley populations occupy aquatic habitats associated with warm (28 °C) and slightly saline (1700–2700 µmhos/cm) springs. The spotted frog in Tule Valley breeds in cold-water portions of the peripheral wetlands, which exhibit maximum temperature variations (1–25 °C), maximum conductivity up to 3200 µmhos/cm, and maximum pH values up to 9.7. Adult frogs are found in habitats with temperatures of 29 °C, conductivity of 4700 µmhos/cm, and pH above 9.0 in the summer. The increased summer salinity and pH in frog habitats returns to …
Habitat Selection Of Merriam's Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo Merriami) Hens With Poults In The Black Hills, South Dakota, Mark A. Rumble, Stanley H. Anderson
Habitat Selection Of Merriam's Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo Merriami) Hens With Poults In The Black Hills, South Dakota, Mark A. Rumble, Stanley H. Anderson
Great Basin Naturalist
We studied habitat selection patterns of Merriam's Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo merriami) hens with poults in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) ecosystem. Thirty-six radio-marked hens produced 19 broods, and we obtained 230 locations of hens with poults. We described vegetation of habitats using criteria from Rocky Mountain Region, U.S. Forest Service, for determining effects of forest management and monitoring of wildlife populations. Most habitat units were 4–32 ha and corresponded to third-order habitats as described by Johnson (1980). Hens with poults selected large meadows and rarely selected dense ponderosa pine habitats. Younger poults used meadows more frequently …
