Contextual Interference Effects In The Acquisition And Retention Of Motor Tasks By Individuals With Mild Mental Handicaps, William J. Vincent, Mary A. Painter, Kathleen B. Inman Oct 1994

Contextual Interference Effects In The Acquisition And Retention Of Motor Tasks By Individuals With Mild Mental Handicaps, William J. Vincent, Mary A. Painter, Kathleen B. Inman

Faculty Publications

The effects of contextual interference on motor skill acquisition and retention were examined in 24 subjects (mean age 13.9 years) with mild mental retardation and 24 chronologically age-matched subjects (mean age 13.11 years) with no disabilities. Subjects from each group were assigned randomly to either a blocked or a random practice schedule. All subjects performed 15 practice trials for each of three different beanbag throwing tasks, 45 trials total. Following a 10-min filled retention interval, 2 trials of each throw (6 total) were performed in a random order by all subjects. Accuracy scores were measured as absolute error from the …

Spiders: A New User Interface For Rotation And Visualization Of N-Dimensional Point Sets, William A. Barrett, Kirk L. Duffin

Faculty Publications

We present a new method for creating n-dimensional rotation matrices from manipulating the projections of n-dimensional data coordinate axes onto a viewing plane. A user interface for n-dimensional rotation is implemented. The interface is shown to have no rotational hysteresis.

The Structure And Dynamics Of The Cs2 Molecular Ion, Karl Sohlberg, Chan Yibai Sep 1994

The Structure And Dynamics Of The Cs2 Molecular Ion, Karl Sohlberg, Chan Yibai

Faculty Publications

Several common elementary methods of computing molecular properties, prerequisite to molecular dynamics studies, are tested for their validity for CS+2. Judged sufficiently accurate, these methods are then used to aid in investigating the collisionally activated dissociation of CS+2 upon impact with xenon. Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus (RRKM) unimolecular decay rate calculations are presented and compared to experimental studies employing collisional activation. RRKM theory is shown to reproduce the experimental results for collision energies near threshold. When corrected for vibrational anharmonicity, the RRKM calculation shows agreement with the experimental results over a slightly wider range of energies. A discussion is given on the applicability …

Thomas Hobbes's "A Discourse Of Laws", Noel B. Reynolds Sep 1994

Thomas Hobbes's "A Discourse Of Laws", Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The recent discovery that an anonymously published 1620 essay was an early writing of Thomas Hobbes invites investigation of his early thinking. Hobbes relied on mostly classical sources to advance a basically conventionalist theory of law and to anticipate twentieth century analyses of the principles of rule of law such as that made famous by F. A. Hayek.

Nesting And Summer Habitat Use By Translocated Sage Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) In Central Idaho, David D. Musil, Kerry P. Reese, John W. Connelly Aug 1994

Nesting And Summer Habitat Use By Translocated Sage Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) In Central Idaho, David D. Musil, Kerry P. Reese, John W. Connelly

Great Basin Naturalist

We translocated 196 Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus into Sawtooth Valley, Idaho, during March–April 1986–87 to augment a small resident population. Forty-four grouse equipped with radio transmitters were monitored through spring and summer. Nest sites (n = 6) had greater (P = .032) horizontal cover than did independent random plots (n = 7). During summer, grouse used sites (n = 50) with taller live and dead shrub heights, greater shrub canopy cover, and more ground litter (P < .009) than were found on dependent random plots (n = 50) 50–300 m from use sites. Distance to edge and mountain sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata vaseyana …

Identification Of Purshia Subintegra (Rosaceae), Frank W. Reichenbacher Aug 1994

Identification Of Purshia Subintegra (Rosaceae), Frank W. Reichenbacher

Great Basin Naturalist

Populations of Purshia in central Arizona are intermediate in some characters between Purshia subintegra, an endangered species, and Purshia stansburiana, the common cliffrose. These intermediates may represent forms derived from a history of hybridization and introgression between putative parent species. Morphological data were obtained from 216 pressed speciments of P. subintegra, P. stansburiana, and introgressed forms. Over 50 separate discriminant function analyses (DFA) and principal components analyses (PCA) were run on numerous combinations of raw and log-transformed data. The best variable suite, providing the clearest discrimination between groups, used log-transformed data on 15 morphological characters, but …

The Design Of The Liahona And The Purpose Of The Second Spindle, Robert L. Bunker Jul 1994

The Design Of The Liahona And The Purpose Of The Second Spindle, Robert L. Bunker

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The Liahona was given by the Lord as a communicationsdevice for Lehi to determine the appropriate direction of travel. This device contained two pointers, only one of which was necessary to provide directional information. But the Liahona was more than just a simple compass in function, for it additionally required faith for correct operation. Since a single pointer always "points" in some direction, the additional pointer was necessary to indicate whether or not the first pointer could be relied upon. This proposed purpose for the second pointer conforms to a well-established engineering principle used in modern fault-tolerant computer systems called …

The Missing Scripture, D. Lynn Johnson Jul 1994

The Missing Scripture, D. Lynn Johnson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

During his visit to the Nephites, the Savior instructed Nephi to add to their records a missing scripture concerning the resurrection of many of the dead immediately following his own resurrection, as well as their appearance to many people. Good evidence suggests that it was Samuel the Lamanite’s prophecy of this resurrection that was missing. Aspects of the manner of recording, abridgment, and translation of the text of the Book of Mormon are elucidated through this missing scripture as it appears in the English text.

Inversion Of Light Scattering Measurements For Particle Size And Optical Constants: Theoretical Study, Matthew R. Jones, Bill P. Curry, M. Quinn Brewster, Keng H. Leong Jun 1994

Inversion Of Light Scattering Measurements For Particle Size And Optical Constants: Theoretical Study, Matthew R. Jones, Bill P. Curry, M. Quinn Brewster, Keng H. Leong

Faculty Publications

We invert the Fredholm equation representing the light scattered by a single spherical particle or a distribution of spherical particles to obtain the particle size distribution function and refractive index. We obtain the solution by expanding the distribution function as a linear combination of a set of orthonormal basis functions. The set of orthonormal basis functions is composed of Schmidt-Hilbert eigenfunctions and a set of supplemental basis functions, which have been orthogonalized with respect to the Schmidt-Hilbert eigenfunctions by using the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure. We use the orthogonality properties of the basis functions and of the eigenvectors of the kernel …

Inversion Of Light Scattering Measurements For Particle Size And Optical Constants: Experimental Study, Matthew R. Jones, Keng H. Leong, M. Quinn Brewster, Bill P. Curry

Faculty Publications

Measurements of the light scattered by a sample contain information regarding the physical properties of the sample. Laser light-scattering measurements can be made unobtrusively in environments that are inaccessible to other types of measurements, so laser light-scattering techniques have become an important tool in aerosol research. The primary difficulty associated with using light-scattering techniques to determine aerosol particle properties is inverting the measurements or extracting the desired information from the measurements. In this study we use a 15-channel polar nephelometer to measure the light-scattering patterns of monodisperse polystyrene spheres. The light-scattering measurements are inverted, and the particle size distribution function …

A New Job- A New World Washington: 1958-1970, Agathe Burckhardt-Sandreuter

Swiss American Historical Society Review

When on June 28th, 1957, my husband was appointed to the post of Labor Attache in Washington he was informed that he would have to be there on August 1st in order to attend the National Day celebrations with the Swiss colony. We agreed that I would join him later since I had to wind up my teaching obligations at the "Mädchengymnasium Basel," find temporary homes for our three daughters and last, but not least, learn how to drive a car. At that time I also got acquainted with "Protocol" which summoned me to pay my first formal call on …
