The Miraculous Island Of Switzerland In The Midst Of The Third Reich, H. Dwight Page
The Miraculous Island Of Switzerland In The Midst Of The Third Reich, H. Dwight Page
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In the film version of Hermann Wouk's War and Remembrance, the Polish Jewish professor Aaron Jastrow and his American Jewish niece Nathalie fall into the trap of the monstrous Nazi genocidal machine and are interned at Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. Upon their arrival there, they are initially treated with brutality until Professor Jastrow reminds their Nazi captors, "We are under Swiss protection." Thereafter, they receive noticeably better treatment. Although Aaron Jastrow later perishes in a gas chamber at Auschwitz, Nathalie owes her own escape from the same camp and her eventual rescue by the Americans at Weimar, Germany in April, …
A New Artistic Rendering Of Izapa Stela 5: A Step Toward Improved Interpretation, John E. Clark
A New Artistic Rendering Of Izapa Stela 5: A Step Toward Improved Interpretation, John E. Clark
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Aided by creative techniques, Ajáx Moreno carefully prepared more accurate, detailed renderings of the Izapa monuments, including Stela 5, with its complex scenes of gods and other supernatural creatures, royalty, animals invested with mythic and value symbolism, and mortals. The author raises relevant questions about reconciling Jakeman’s view with the new drawing: Are there Old World connections? Can Izapa be viewed as a Book of Mormon city? Did the Nephites know of Lehi’s dream? Are there name glyphs on the stela? The scene, if it does not depict Lehi’s dream, fits clearly in Mesoamerican art in theme, style, technical execution, …
A Māori View Of The Book Of Mormon, Louis Midgley
A Māori View Of The Book Of Mormon, Louis Midgley
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The M?ori people read and understood the Book of Mormon from their own cultural perspective. Rather than examining particular verses for doctrinal content, the M?ori viewed the Book of Mormon as a moral story of a people with failings and strengths. They likened the stories to themselves, feeling they lacked the spiritual strength to stay on a righteous path for long. They saw a tragic story of families in conflict and subtribes and tribes quarreling with each other and bent on revenge for personal insults and factional quarrels. The kinship ties seemed particularly relevant to them. The Book of Mormon …
Ammon And The Mesoamerican Custom Of Smiting Off Arms, Bruce E. Yerman
Ammon And The Mesoamerican Custom Of Smiting Off Arms, Bruce E. Yerman
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Ammon, a Nephite missionary who chose to serve a Lamanite king as his servant, gained fame by cutting off the arms of the king’s enemies. The practice of smiting off arms of enemies as trophies fits a cultural pattern known among the later Aztecs and Maya in pre-Spanish Mesoamerica.
Unlocking The Sacred Text, Marilyn Arnold
Unlocking The Sacred Text, Marilyn Arnold
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Literary analysis provides useful tools in the study of sacred texts, including the Book of Mormon. For the author, three transforming events that enhanced her study of the Book of Mormon included reading the book in earnest as a complex and masterful literary text, the entrance of the Spirit into her study of the book, and a prayerful desire to experience the great change of heart described by King Benjamin and Alma. Nephi begins his record with sincerity and honesty and serves notice that he intends to prepare a true record. The opposition between Nephi and his brothers Laman and …

Riparian Vegetation Along The Middle Snake River, Idaho: Zonation, Geographical Trends, And Historical Changes, Mark D. Dixon, W. Carter Johnson
Riparian Vegetation Along The Middle Snake River, Idaho: Zonation, Geographical Trends, And Historical Changes, Mark D. Dixon, W. Carter Johnson
Great Basin Naturalist
A baseline study was conducted on an 83-km free-flowing reach of the Snake River between Swan Falls Dam and the Idaho-Oregon border. The research had 2 components: (1) field characterization and inventory of existing riparian flora, vegetation, and environment (soils, topography, streamflow), and (2) determination and mapping, using a geographic information system, of historic changes in riparian vegetation based on a time series (1938–39, 1957, 1969, 1987) of aerial photographs.
The flora was diverse, with 185 species of vascular plants identified, 63 of which were exotics. Vegetation was structured vertically along the riverbank gradient into lifeform-defined habitat types: emergent, riparian …

Classification And Ordination Of The Alpine Plant Communities Of Railroad Ridge, White Cloud Peaks, Idaho, Carla A. Richardson, Douglass M. Henderson
Great Basin Naturalist
Alpine vegetation of Railroad Ridge in the White Cloud Peaks, Custer County, Idaho, was investigated to ascertain native communities and describe their distribution with respect to important environmental factors. Percent cover of all species and environmental information were recorded for 69 plots. Data were analyzed by TWINSPAN and CANOCO, which provided a classification and an ordination, respectively. Predominant communities are dominated by (1) Phlox pulvinata, (2) Carex elynoides, and (3) Geum rossii, and other communities of lesser importance are dominated by (4) Artemisia campestris, (5) Eriogonum ovalifolium and Silene acaulis, and (6) Ivesia gordonii. …

Butterflies Of The Toquima Range, Nevada: Distribution, Natural History, And Comparison To The Toiyabe Range, Erica Fleishman, Dennis D. Murphy, George T. Austin
Great Basin Naturalist
Studies of Great Basin faunas can provide information for landscape-level adaptive management by federal agencies and shed light on potential effects of climate change in continental interior landscapes. To provide such information, we characterized the butterfly fauna of the Toquima Range, a mountain range in the heart of the Great Basin with topography typical of the region. We also compared the butterfly fauna of the Toquima Range to that of the adjacent Toiyabe Range, which is more topographically complex and species rich but less representative of the Great Basin on the whole. We explicitly addressed the effects of area and …

Tireless In His Service: Rasmus Andersen, Pastor And Author 1878-1924, Thorvald Hansen
The Bridge
Of the four founders of the Danish Lutheran Church in America in 1872, the one concerning whom the most information exists is Rasmus Andersen. Yet it has been my observation that comparatively little is known about him. A reason for this is that, to my knowledge, no comprehensive biography exists, and there is almost nothing available in the English language. Most of the material that does exist is to be found in the Danes World Wide Archives ("Udvandrerarkivet") in Aalborg, Denmark. According to Birgit Flemming Larsen, who oversees that archive, the Andersen collection is the largest at the Aalborg archive. …

Philosophy And Early Christianity, Daniel W. Graham, James L. Siebach
Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011
The early church was unable to continue once the apostles had departed. Bishops were only local officials and could not speak for the entire church. Beginning with the later second century, philosophy plays an increasingly important role in the church—this appears to be an effect rather than a cause of the apostasy.

How Deep The Chasm? A Reply To Owen And Mosser's Review, David L. Paulsen, R. Dennis Potter
Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011
In exploring the divide between Latter-day Saints and Evangelicals, Paulsen and Potter reply to Owen and Mosser on issues of open canon, continuing revelation, biblical enerrancy, divine finitude, divine embodiment, deification, the Trinity or Godhead, soteriology and anthropology, and postmortem salvation.

Afterword, Daniel C. Peterson
Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011
In response to the articles in this issue, Peterson notes that Latter-day Saints do not extend themselves to expose and attack other faiths. He further discusses, among other things, an open canon and continuing revelation, salvation as outlined in the scriptures, the ordinances of the gospel, revelation following the incarnation and resurrection of Christ, the biblical canon, inerrancy, biblical texts, the Book of Abraham, and the nature of God.

Allen D. Breck Award Winner: “Ples Acsep Thes My Skrybled Lynes”: The Construction And Conventions Of Women’S Letters In England, 1540–1603, James Daybell
Quidditas
The central themes of this essay are delineated by the contrasting examples of two female correspondents. Both women are from similar gentry backgrounds and wrote in the late 1570s to early 1590s. The first is Mary Harding, the court maid of Lady Bridget Manners, herself the daughter of Elizabeth, countess of Rutland, famed for her marriage to Robert Tyrwhit in 1594, which so greatly incurred the wrath of Elizabeth I. Only four of Mary Harding’s letters have survived, all of which were sent to her mistress’s mother in order to keep her abreast of court news, her daughter’s progress, and …
