The Flora Of Great Basin Mountain Ranges: Diversity, Sources, And Dispersal Ecology, K. T. Harper, D. Carl Freeman, W. Kent Ostler, Lionel G. Klikoff Mar 1978

The Flora Of Great Basin Mountain Ranges: Diversity, Sources, And Dispersal Ecology, K. T. Harper, D. Carl Freeman, W. Kent Ostler, Lionel G. Klikoff

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

The high elevation floras of 9 mountainous "mainlands" (3 in the Sierra-Cascade system and 6 in the High Plateau-Wasatch-Teton system) and 15 isolated mountain "islands" in the Intermountain Region have been analyzed. Mainland floras support more species per unit area and show a smaller increase in diversity as area is increased than islands (never exceeding 5 percent of any flora), however; and the island floras are overwhelmingly dominated by species with no apparent modifications for long-range dispersal. Furthermore, the eastern mainland has exerted a far greater influence on the flora and the vegetation of the islands than has the western …

The Biota Of The Intermountain Region In Geohistorical Context, Arthur Cronquist Mar 1978

The Biota Of The Intermountain Region In Geohistorical Context, Arthur Cronquist

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

The present Great Basin Floristic Province had achieved roughly its present topographic conformation by some time in the Miocene epoch and had a climate not too different from the present one, though probably a little warmer, moister, and less continental. Both the flora and the fauna took on a fairly modern aspect during the Miocene, as a result of worldwide evolutionary changes and more specific adaptation to the conditions of the region. Changes in the biota since that time mainly reflect evolution and migration at the level of species and, to a lesser extent, genera, in response to regional conditions …

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas Jan 1978

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas

Theses and Dissertations

Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." These definitions also tend to be statements of value, …

The Founding Of The Samoan Mission, R. Lanier Britsch Jan 1978

The Founding Of The Samoan Mission, R. Lanier Britsch

BYU Studies

The establishment of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Samoan Islands has an interesting and unusual history. Two Mormon missionaries, Kimo Belio and Samuela Manoa, were sent to Samoa from Hawaii and arrived there in 1863. They baptized about fifty people, but the Church struggled, in part because the Samoan Mission was not officially sanctioned by leaders in Salt Lake City. In 1887, Elder Joseph H. Dean sailed to Samoa to revive missionary work. He faced many obstacles, such as tribal warfare and a rumor that it was illegal to join the Mamona (Mormon) Church, but …

The Dufour Effect. Ii. Experimental Confirmation Of The Onsager Heat-Mass Reciprocal Relation For A Binary Liquid Mixture, Richard L. Rowley, Frederick H. Horne Jan 1978

The Dufour Effect. Ii. Experimental Confirmation Of The Onsager Heat-Mass Reciprocal Relation For A Binary Liquid Mixture, Richard L. Rowley, Frederick H. Horne

Faculty Publications

Although experimental verification of Onsager's reciprocal relations has been achieved in a variety of cases, no quantitative test of the heat-mass reciprocal relation for a binary liquid system has previously been reported. We present in this communication experimental proof of the equality of the mass-heat reciprocal relation for the system carbon tetrachloride - cyclohezane.

Some Thoughts On Acculturation, Otto G. Hoiberg

The Bridge

Three years ago an important work entitled Flight to America - The Social Background of 300,000 Danish Emigrants was published by Kristian Hvidt(1), Head Librarian of the Danish Parliamentary Library in Copenhagen. Dr. Hvidt's painstaking demographic study of 58 handwritten volumes of data ralating to America-bound Danish emigrants between 1868 and 1914, together with computer analysis, revealed a wealth of interesting information relating to the age, sex, family status, occupation, motivation and other characteristics of the people concerned.

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor Jan 1978

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations

The primary function of this thesis was to determine, through the analysis of three randomly selected speeches, the speaking style of Heber C. Kimball. The selected speeches were presented in three different utah locations, and they covered a span of nine years (1856-65). All three speeches were presented to a Mormon audience and were religious in nature.

Seven elements of style have been used for the analysis of the three speeches. They are: accuracy, clarity, propriety, economy, force, striking quality, and liveliness. It was determined that President Kimball's speaking style was weak in the areas of accuracy and clarity. In …

Do Your Homework!, Thorvald Hansen Jan 1978

Do Your Homework!, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

I once heard a young American ask a Danish visitor whether or not he was acquainted with the inquirer's uncle in Denmark. It quickly developed that the only thing which the young man knew about his uncle was his family name. Incredible as it may seem, such things happen and though to a lesser degree, they happen frequently when a search is made for overseas ancestors. Denmark is a relatively small country and the unspoken assumption is often made that everyone there knows everyone else and, therefore, one need only know the name and the fact that an ancestor came …
