Behavior Of Desert Heteromyids, O. J. Reichman Aug 1983

Behavior Of Desert Heteromyids, O. J. Reichman

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Activity patterns of desert heteromyids are characteristic of many nocturnal rodents, with a peak of activity near dusk and a second prior to dawn. Seasonal activity varies with environmental conditions, going from activity throughout the winter in larger species to extended periods of torpor by smaller pocket mice. The rodents forage primarily for seeds, with pocket mice tending to feed under shrubs and on relatively low-density seed patches and kangaroo rats frequently foraging in the open for relatively high-density seed patches. The animals are usually solitary, with aggression exhibited between and within species. Burrow construction can be simple to extensive. …

Religiosity And Mental Health: A Critical Reevaluation And Meta-Analysis, Allen E. Bergin Jul 1983

Religiosity And Mental Health: A Critical Reevaluation And Meta-Analysis, Allen E. Bergin

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

For many decades, lassitude and malaise hae afflicted the relationship between psychology and religion. Interest and activity in this relationship are now being renewed, and old controversies with new terms are resurfacing. This article reviews the extensive empirical literature on the topic and shows that religiosity is a complex phenomenon with numerous correlates and consequences that defy simple interpretations. A meta-analysis of 24 pertinent studies revealed no support for the preconception that religiousness is necessarily corelated with psychopathology; but it also showed only slightly positive correlates of religion. Sociological and psychiatric reports were more favorable to religion. The data's ambiguities …

Agency And Certitude: The Dichotomy In Family Decision-Making, Kay P. Edwards Apr 1983

Agency And Certitude: The Dichotomy In Family Decision-Making, Kay P. Edwards

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

There appears to be an increasing emphasis on rule-making and prescription as the preferred means for problem-solving and avoidance of decision risk in individual and family life, and by the institutions which impact on us in our families. Such an approach to family decision-making and the decision-making which affects families is evidence that the principle of agency is losing ground as individuals and families turn increasingly toward certitude in their personal and group decisions. The purpose of this paper is to examine these two approaches to decision-making in families and their relationship to decision context.

Development Of A Computer-Aided Analysis Package For Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, William E. Warkentin Apr 1983

Development Of A Computer-Aided Analysis Package For Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, William E. Warkentin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops an interactive computer-aided analysis package for solving linear elastic fracture mechanics problems. CHILES 2 (an existing finite element fracture mechanics program) was modified to be interactive. The modified program is named CHILES.BYU and is used in conjunction with QMESH.BYU and MOVIE.BYU to form the total software package. An analysis of glass ceramics and glass ceramic/metal interfaces was performed demonstrating the capabilities of the package. This study demonstrates the usefulness of an interactive package of computer programs to allow an engineer to rapidly investigate different crack configurations.

Evaluation Of A Program To Control Hydatid Disease In Central Utah, Ferron L. Andersen, John R. Crellin, Craig R. Nichols, Peter M. Schantz Jan 1983

Evaluation Of A Program To Control Hydatid Disease In Central Utah, Ferron L. Andersen, John R. Crellin, Craig R. Nichols, Peter M. Schantz

Great Basin Naturalist

A program to control hydatid disease in central Utah was evaluated by: (1) surveillance of infection in dogs and sheep, (2) questioning adult residents of two Sanpete County communities (Fountain Green and Spring City) about their knowledge of hydatid disease and their attitudes toward preventive measures, (3) interviewing local officials to evaluate the proposed implementation of proper community-wide measures, (4) analyzing records of prophylactic treatment of dogs with praziquantel, and (5) comparing scores of tests given to third and fourth grade students before and after they colored an educational pamphlet about hydatid disease.

Infection rates of Echinococcus granulosus in dogs …

John Skelton: Courtly Maker/Popular Poet, Nancy A. Gutierrez Jan 1983

John Skelton: Courtly Maker/Popular Poet, Nancy A. Gutierrez

Quidditas

The eight poems in Latin and English written at the time of the English victory at Flodden Field in 1513 are various combinations of praise, vituperation, satire, and polemic, reflecting the attitudes of their authors. John Skelton, Thomas More, Peter Carmelianus, and Bernard André. These courtly makers, homogeneous in both their humanist background and court employment, see the battle essentially the same way–as an occasion to celebrate their royal employer and to abuse his enemy–thus the differing verse forms and slanted treatments are grounded in a common point of view. However, John Skelton, as author of three of the eight …

Petrarch's Rhetorical Reticentia As Politics, Lucia Re Jan 1983

Petrarch's Rhetorical Reticentia As Politics, Lucia Re

Quidditas

A discussion of Petrarch's politics must take into account the historicity of politics itself: political science, as distinct from other disciplines, is generally believed to originate with Machiavelli. It would therefore be anti-historical to attribute to Petrarch a systematic political vision (as it is understood today). The modern claim for the independence of political theory and practice is as alien to Petrarch as the possibility of a theologically integrated political vision: Petrarch could not and would not have written either Il Prinicpe or Dante's De Monarchia. Nevertheless, I will speak of Petrarch's politics not only because, at a very …

Shirley's The Lady Of Pleasure: The Dialect Of Earth And Sky, Tony J. Stafford Jan 1983

Shirley's The Lady Of Pleasure: The Dialect Of Earth And Sky, Tony J. Stafford

Quidditas

At the beginning of James Shirley's The Lady of Pleasure, Aretina's Steward tells her that if she will be patient, she will have her pleasure. Aretina, who has just come up from the country, makes it clear that finding pleasure is precisely her reason for coming to London. Thus introduces to her, we assume that she is the lady of pleasure referred to in the play's title. Indeed, Aretina's constant effort throughout the play to indulge in city fun seems to confirm our first impression. But we miss the play's subtlety if we accept the obvious, for Shirley seems …
