Breeding Birds Of An Ancient Bristlecone Pine Stand In East Central Nevada, Dean E. Medin Apr 1984

Breeding Birds Of An Ancient Bristlecone Pine Stand In East Central Nevada, Dean E. Medin

Great Basin Naturalist

This paper describes features of the breeding bird population of a Great Basin ancient bristlecone pine stand on Wheeler Peak in White Pine County, east central Nevada. The bird population was determined by spot-mapping methods on a 20-ha plot during June and July 1981. The density of breeding birds was 82 pairs per 40 ha. Fourteen species were territorial. The most abundant species were the Dark-eyed Junco, Mountain Chickadee, Mountain Bluebird, and Townsend's Solitaire. Other common breeding species included the Cassin's Finch, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Pine Siskin, and Dusky Flycatcher. There were 410 individual breeding birds per km2. When …

Iv. Intelligence Operations In Switzerland During The Second World War, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The topic of my paper is involved and multifaceted. It deals with well-known organizations and names such as the Rote Kapelle, Dulles and the OSS, Schellenberg, and the Abwehr, but it concentrates on the role that Switzerland played in the field of intelligence during World War II. Due to the volume of materials on almost every aspect of my topic it will not be possible to present more than an overview of the main themes and a glimpse at the issues that have challenged historians over the last forty years.

Methods And Materials For Capturing And Monitoring Flammulated Owls, Richard T. Reynolds, Brian D. Linkhart Jan 1984

Methods And Materials For Capturing And Monitoring Flammulated Owls, Richard T. Reynolds, Brian D. Linkhart

Great Basin Naturalist

Techniques for locating, capturing, and monitoring activities and movements of Flammulated Owls were developed during four years of study. Adults responded to imitated territorial song throughout the nesting season. Nests were found by noting vocalizations and behaviors associated with courtship-feeding and food transfers between the sexes. After fledging, broods were difficult to follow, unless the young or adults were radio-tagged. Adults and young were captured with noose poles, hoop nets, and mist nets. Backpack harnesses and tail-mounted transmitters were used on adults and backpacks on fledglings. Transmitter life was 30–40 nights.

One Wine In New Bottles: Thomas Blenerhasset's Elizabethan Shepherds' Pageant, Lynn Staley Johnson

Quidditas

Though it would be impossible to claim for Thomas Blenerhasset's A Revelation of the true Minerva (15820 a place among the major works of Elizabethan literature, the poem deserves more than the cursory references it sometimes receives as an early indication of the influence of The Shepheardes Calender (1579) upon English verse. Not only does Blenerhasset's narrative poem suggest ways in which an alert and cultivated reader might respond to Spenser's first published poem, but A Revelation contains tantalizing clues to that rare metamorphosis accomplished by English writers in the reign of Elizabeth, a process by which Tudor poets, like …

"Use And Abuse" In Romeo And Juliet, Maurice Hunt Jan 1984

"Use And Abuse" In Romeo And Juliet, Maurice Hunt

Quidditas

Near the midpoint of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence formulates an authoritative-sounding concept which seemingly lends itself to interpreting tragedy. Gathering "baleful weeds" and "precious juiced flowers," the Friar states that everything earthly has a virtuous use and a potential abuse:

O, mickle is the powerful grace that lies

In plants, herbs, stones, and their true qualities.

For naught so vile that on the earth doth live

But too the earth some special good doth give;

Nor aught so good but, strain'd from that fair use,

Revolts from true birth, stumbling on abuse.

Virtue itself turns vice being misapplied, …

A Nurtured Season, Maryan Myres

Inscape

The early morning sun shone on the watered fields where men and women bent to plant the crop that feeds the other half of the world. The stalks were individually placed in the ground with care in hopes the rice would sprout and grow. And I hadn't liked rice until I arrived in Taiwan two months ago . . . ha! I looked out the train window at the neatly organized fields . From a distance they resembled green patchwork quilts.

Another View Of Family Conflict And Family Wholeness, C. Terry Warner, Terrance D. Olson

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

A family life educator's suggested solutions of family problems will spring from his beliefs abou the sources of human conflict. This paper sketches a theory of conflict that is rooted in the individual's betrayal of his/her own fundamental values. Hypocrisy and self-deception ensue, and individuals insidiously provoke each other to do the very things for which they blame one another. This means that people can desist form the attitudes that throw them into conflict and live harmoniously. But because of their self-deception, seeing how to do this is not easy. Ultimately, the solution lies in moral responsibility. Implications for family …

The Bridge

Dana College, Blair, Nebraska, and Grand View College, Des Moines, Iowa, are the two surviving institutions of higher education founded by Danish immigrants in the United States. One part of a year-long celebration of Dana's centennial in 1984 was the publication of a new history of the college and its parent institution , Trinity Seminary. Entitled A Place Called Dana , the book was released October 5 during Dana 's Homecoming observance.
