The Test Of English As A Foreign Language Sample Test As A Measure Of Adolescent Language Ability, Paul Gardiner Osborn Jan 1988

The Test Of English As A Foreign Language Sample Test As A Measure Of Adolescent Language Ability, Paul Gardiner Osborn

Theses and Dissertations

Relative performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language Sample Test (TOEFL-ST) was explored in sixty native English speaking high school students. Subjects also were administered the Fullerton Language Test for Adolescents and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test Revised. The TOEFL-ST was not difficult for this population, indicating that TOEFL tests taken by foreign speaking college students probably assess a level of native English competency well below the high school level. The three tests, including subtests, appear to measure a wide array of subdomains of language competency. The data do not support the conclusion that any of these …

Minerva Teichert's Murals: The Motivation For Her Large-Scale Production, Marian Eastwood Wardle

Theses and Dissertations

It is my thesis that the impetus for Minerva Teichert's prolific mural production came from the lofty ideals of the Beaux Art mural tradition which she encountered and embraced during her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1909 to 1912. Furthermore, it was the great interest in mural decoration during the 1930s, spurred by government patronage, that provided Teichert with the opportunity to apply these ideals to large-scale works.
Research into the Beaux Art mural tradition has been difficult, as recent scholarship on the subject is negligible. An understanding of this early mural movement however, yields a greater …

Pronouns Of Address In The Book Of Mormon, Lyle L. Fletcher Jan 1988

Pronouns Of Address In The Book Of Mormon, Lyle L. Fletcher

Theses and Dissertations

The first section of this thesis is a diachronic examination of second person pronouns in English with special focus on variations in usage such as pronominal shifting between thou (and related forms) and ye (and related forms), as well as an examination of the second person pronoun usage in the English Bible (especially the King James Version) with a similar focus. From the thirteenth century on variations in usage have been common.

The second section is a synchronic examination of second person pronouns as used by Joseph Smith and some of his contemporaries, followed by an analysis of these pronouns …

Cohesion In A Utah Sample Of Latter-Day Saint Couples, Joe Edgar Glenn Jan 1988

Cohesion In A Utah Sample Of Latter-Day Saint Couples, Joe Edgar Glenn

Theses and Dissertations

It was hypothesized by Olson and his colleagues (Olson, et al., 1983) that "Mormons" were more likely to be enmeshed than many other cultural/religious groups. The purpose of this study was to determine if individuals affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) scored significantly more often in the enmeshed category of the cohesion dimension of the Circumplex Model, using FACES III data, than the norming sample for the FACES III instrument. The study also examined the level of satisfaction that the Mormon sample expressed for their level of cohesion. Data from 61 L.D.S. married couples living …

Records Of Exotic Fishes From Idaho And Wyoming, Walter R. Courtenay Jr., C. Richard Robins, Reeve M. Bailey, James E. Deacon

Great Basin Naturalist

One exotic poeciliid (Xiphophorus helleri) and two cichlids (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum and Tilapia mossambica) are recorded as recently established in thermal springs and their outflows in southern Idaho. Misgurnus anguillicaudatus was collected and is considered as established in the Boise River system. Poecilia mexicana and juvenile hybrid tilapias are recorded from the Bruneau River at Bruneau Hot Springs, Idaho. A reproducing population of X. helleri was found in a spring within the boundaries of Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. Poecilia reticulata, previously reported from one spring each in Idaho and Wyoming, is recorded from a second …

Small-Stone Content Of Mima Mounds Of The Columbia Plateau And Rocky Mountain Regions: Implications For Mound Origin, George W. Cox, Christopher G. Gakahu, Douglas W. Allen Oct 1987

Small-Stone Content Of Mima Mounds Of The Columbia Plateau And Rocky Mountain Regions: Implications For Mound Origin, George W. Cox, Christopher G. Gakahu, Douglas W. Allen

Great Basin Naturalist

Mima moundfields were investigated at the Lawrence Memorial Grassland Preserve, located on the Columbia Plateau in southern Wasco County, Oregon, and at three locations in the San Luis Valley and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, southern Colorado, to test the alternative hypotheses of mound origins by erosion, frost action, and soil translocation by geomyid pocket gophers. The concentrations of two size classes of small stones, gravel (8–15 mm diameter) and pebbles (15–50 mm diameter), were sampled along mound-to-intermound transects and at different depths within the mounds. Numbers and masses of small stones per unit soil volume increased from intermounds to mounds …

Giovanni Maria Artusi's L'Artusi Overo Delle Imperfettioni Della Moderna Musica (1600): A Translation And Commentary, Malcolm Litchfield Aug 1987

Giovanni Maria Artusi's L'Artusi Overo Delle Imperfettioni Della Moderna Musica (1600): A Translation And Commentary, Malcolm Litchfield

Faculty Publications

Giovanni Maria Artusi is well known for his conservative role in the debate between advocates of the prima and seconda pratiche. Contemporary authors marvel at Artusi's audacity in criticizing the genius of Monteverdi. Though often viewed as a pedant, Artusi was a significant Italian theorist who understood ancient Greek theory and had innovative ideas for applying this ancient knowledge to modern practice.

L' Artusi, overo Delle imperfettioni deIla moderna musica was written to illuminate and correct errors Artusi found in contemporary scholarship (chiefly in Bottrigari's work) and composition (specifically, certain liberties in Monteverdi's madrigals). Artusi effectively argues for a universal …

Agentive Theory As Therapy: An Outcome Study, Daniel K. Judd Aug 1987

Agentive Theory As Therapy: An Outcome Study, Daniel K. Judd

Theses and Dissertations

The present study evaluated the efficacy of a four-week seminar which emphasized the principles of Agentive Theory. This theory, which is compatible with theories of a phenomenological/ existential perspective, was first developed by C. T. Warner, an American philosopher. Agentive Theorists/Therapists emphasize that our negative emotions, ie., depression, anger, etc. , are assertions or judgments we make and not merely feelings we are responsible for controlling or expressing. Forty-eight outpatients who sought help with personal/emotional problems from a department of behavioral medicine were assigned to either a treatment or waiting-list control Group. Following a four-week treatment phase, the treatment group …

Evidence For Variability In Spawning Behavior Of Interior Cutthroat Trout In Response To Environmental Uncertainty, Rodger L. Nelson, William S. Platts, Osborne Casey Jul 1987

Evidence For Variability In Spawning Behavior Of Interior Cutthroat Trout In Response To Environmental Uncertainty, Rodger L. Nelson, William S. Platts, Osborne Casey

Great Basin Naturalist

The fluctuating characteristics (numbers, biomass, condition, and young-adult ratios) of the Lahontan (Humboldt) cutthroat trout population in Chimney Creek, Nevada, are discussed in relationship to the unpredictable and unstable habitat in which the population occurs. One possible means of adapting to environmental capriciousness, staggered spawning, occurred during 1982, and clues as to the cause of this unusual event are sought by examining the runoff hydrographs of a nearby watershed for 1981 through 1984. The management values of the environmental tolerance of these native trout with respect to restoring viable trout fisheries in degraded Great Basin streams are also considered.

Annotated Inventory Of Invertebrate Populations Of An Alpine Lake And Stream Chain In Colorado, John H. Bushnell, Susan Q. Foster, Bruce M. Wahle

Great Basin Naturalist

Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected during the ice-free season (1 July–20 October) over a five-year period from a chain of alpine lakes and intervening streams in the Green Lakes Valley (3,347–3,615 m) in Boulder County, Colorado. A list of taxa was developed for 1981 and 1982, with taxonomic additions for 1983–1985 and comments on community structure, seasonal and elevational changes in species abundance, and noteworthy occurrences. A total of 111 taxa was collected, of which 84% occurred in streams, 58% being exclusively lotic. Dipterans composed 73–81% of total abundance in streams. The littoral benthic zone of lakes was predominantly trichopterans and …

Flora Of The Orange Cliffs Of Utah, L. M. Shultz, E. E. Neely, J. S. Tuhy Apr 1987

Flora Of The Orange Cliffs Of Utah, L. M. Shultz, E. E. Neely, J. S. Tuhy

Great Basin Naturalist

The vascular flora of the Orange Cliffs area, defined here as part of the Colorado Plateau floristic province, harbors approximately 209 species in 123 genera and 49 families. A species checklist is provided with a discussion of physical and floristic aspects of the region. The flora is compared statistically to the San Rafael Swell flora, which is also a subset of the Colorado Plateau. We define six vegetation types and three edaphic communities; these are described and mapped. Of eleven endemic plant species in the Orange Cliffs, three are local and rare. Sites for Astragalus nidularius, A. moencoppensis, and Xylorhiza …

Effects Of Land Clearing On Bordering Winter Annual Populations In The Mohave Desert, Richard Hunter, F. B. Turner, R. G. Lindberg, Katherine Bell Hunter Apr 1987

Effects Of Land Clearing On Bordering Winter Annual Populations In The Mohave Desert, Richard Hunter, F. B. Turner, R. G. Lindberg, Katherine Bell Hunter

Great Basin Naturalist

Construction of a 10-MWe solar thermal power plant in Daggett, California, involved clearing and leveling 53 ha of desert land. Transient offsite effects of this construction were apparent as a reduced density of annual plants within 100 m downwind of the edge of the cleared area. Schismus arabicus populations recovered within four years, but Erodium cicutarium populations did not. The effects appeared to be related more to an interaction of seed-dispersal mechanisms with the large, open space than to the obvious sand movement and deposition associated with the clearing operations.

Occurrence Of The Musk Ox, Symbos Cavifrons, From Southeastern Idaho And Comments On The Genus Bootherium, Michael E. Nelson, James H. Madsen Jr. Apr 1987

Occurrence Of The Musk Ox, Symbos Cavifrons, From Southeastern Idaho And Comments On The Genus Bootherium, Michael E. Nelson, James H. Madsen Jr.

Great Basin Naturalist

A set of ovibovine horn cores collected from Pleistocene sediments in southeastern Idaho provides additional evidence for sexual dimorphism in the helmeted musk ox, Symbos cavifrons. Specimens previously assigned to Bootherium sargenti are placed in synonomy with Symbos cavifrons as sexual dimorphs (females). Bootherium bombifrons is a valid taxon and is probably not closely related to Symbos.

Parasites Of The Cutthroat Trout, Salmo Clarki, And Longnose Suckers, Catostomus Catostomus, From Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming, R. A. Heckmann, H. L. Ching Apr 1987

Parasites Of The Cutthroat Trout, Salmo Clarki, And Longnose Suckers, Catostomus Catostomus, From Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming, R. A. Heckmann, H. L. Ching

Great Basin Naturalist

Twenty-five cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki) and eight longnose suckers (Catostomus catostomus) from Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming, were collected and examined for parasites in 1985. Cutthroat trout had at least six different species of parasites that included both protozoans and helminths. The greatest number of parasite species on one fish was nine. Parasites added to the known list for cutthroat trout from Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming, were: Myxosoma sp., Diphyllobothrium ditremum, Diphyllobothrium dendriticum, Diplostomum baeri, and Posthodiplostomum minimum. These data were compared with a previous survey (1971) and a checklist of parasites of cutthroat trout in North America. There …
