Observations On Recruitment And Ecology Of Razorback Sucker: Lower Colorado River, Arizona–California–Nevada, Paul C. Marsh, W. L. Minckley Jan 1989

Observations On Recruitment And Ecology Of Razorback Sucker: Lower Colorado River, Arizona–California–Nevada, Paul C. Marsh, W. L. Minckley

Great Basin Naturalist

The Colorado River system downstream from Lake Mohave yielded 42 adult, 19 juvenile, and 39 larval wild razorback suckers (Zyrauchen texanus) between 1962 and 1988. Forty-six additional young captured between 1984 and 1987 may have been wild or stocked, hatchery-propagated fish. Wild juveniles of this endemic, imperiled species, with one exception, have not been otherwise known from the Colorado River basin downstream from the Grand Canyon since the 1950s. A majority of adults and larvae were from the river or its mainstream impoundments, while all but one wild juvenile and all presumably stocked fish were captured from irrigation …

Competition Between Adult And Seedling Shrubs Of Ambrosia Dumosa In The Mojave Desert, Nevada, Richard Hunter Jan 1989

Competition Between Adult And Seedling Shrubs Of Ambrosia Dumosa In The Mojave Desert, Nevada, Richard Hunter

Great Basin Naturalist

Seeds of the perennial shrub Ambrosia dumosa germinated in abundance following 11 days of rain during August 1983 at a study site in the northern Mojave Desert. Seedling establishment, growth, and reproduction were observed in natural vegetation and in an area that had been previously cleared of vegetation. For 5,527 A. dumosa seedlings, percent survival in April 1986 averaged 3% in the undisturbed vegetation and 58% in the denuded area. Seedlings occupying the cleared area had grown to sizes up to 0. 1 m3 m by October 1984; some produced flowers and fruit in the spring of 1985. Surviving …

Utah Chub (Gila Atraria) From The Latest Pleistocene Gilbert Shoreline, West Of Corrine, Utah, Stuart B. Murchison Jan 1989

Utah Chub (Gila Atraria) From The Latest Pleistocene Gilbert Shoreline, West Of Corrine, Utah, Stuart B. Murchison

Great Basin Naturalist

A bulk sampling of gastropods collected near Great Salt Lake, Utah, revealed several fish bones of Gila atraria (Girard). The early date of this find, coupled with the relationship of the Gilbert lake transgression and successive regression of approximately 11,000 years B.P., reveals a death assemblage induced by a series of saline inundations into the freshwater paludal environment.

Aquatic Insects In Montezuma Well, Arizona, Usa: A Travertine Spring Mound With High Alkalinity And Dissolved Carbon Dioxide, Dean W. Blinn, Milton W. Sanderson Jan 1989

Aquatic Insects In Montezuma Well, Arizona, Usa: A Travertine Spring Mound With High Alkalinity And Dissolved Carbon Dioxide, Dean W. Blinn, Milton W. Sanderson

Great Basin Naturalist

An annotated list of aquatic insects from the high carbonate system of Montezuma Well, Arizona, USA, is presented for collections taken during 1976–1986. Fifty-seven taxa in 16 families are reported, including new distribution records for Arizona (Anacaena signaticollis, Laccobius ellipticus, and Crenitulus sp. [nr. debilis]) and the USA (Enochrus sharpi). Larval stages for Trichoptera, Lepidoptera, Megaloptera, Neuroptera, Chironomidae, and Anisoptera were absent even though the habitat lacks fish, and water temperature, dissolved oxygen, available food, and substrata appear adequate in Montezuma Well. The potential importance of alkalinity in restricting these insect groups is discussed.

The Theological Contributions Of Johannes V. Knudsen, Axel Kildegaard Jan 1989

The Theological Contributions Of Johannes V. Knudsen, Axel Kildegaard

The Bridge

"The glory of God is man fully alive." That quotation attributed to lreneus, Church father and first systematic theologian, is about 1800 years old. It affords a clue in my search for the common thread that runs throughout the seemingly diverse theological interests of Johannes V. Knudsen. The Celt, lreneus, Bishop of Lyons, who lived in the volatile second century when the Christian tradition was taking shape, wrote two significant works. One defined the basic Christian teachings, and the other, Against the Heresies, answered false teachings. These works spoke also to the interests of Bishop N.F.S. Grundtvig in 19th century …

Brigham Young's Indian Superintendency (1851-58): A Significant Microcosm Of The American Indian Experience, Wayne Miles Eckman Jan 1989

Brigham Young's Indian Superintendency (1851-58): A Significant Microcosm Of The American Indian Experience, Wayne Miles Eckman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a detailed study of Brigham Young's Indian superintendency within a framework of the federal Indian policy of his era. It focuses on Brigham Young's personal challenges and successes in instituting a conciliatory policy with the natives of the Great Basin. Experience taught Brigham Young that it was "cheaper to feed the Indians than to fight them." Brigham Young pursued his policy in spite of opposition from some Mormon constituents until finally his determination overruled pleas to forcibly remove the Indians from their lands.

Another important emphasis of the thesis is the personal interaction between Brigahm Young and …

The Relevance Of Our Heritage, Johannes Knudsen Jan 1989

The Relevance Of Our Heritage, Johannes Knudsen

The Bridge

Are the traditional fellowship values of the American Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, of Grand View College and the Folk Schools, viable today? This is the most important question facing us as a group, and it is expressed in our theme through the term "relevance." We must therefore ask what relevance means. According to the dictionary it means that something is "lifted up again" or that it "bears upon the matter at hand." When this definition is applied to personal or group values, it means that these values continue to be alive and important or that they are lifted out …

Anti-Mormon Pamphleteering In Great Britain, 1837-1860, Craig L. Foster Jan 1989

Anti-Mormon Pamphleteering In Great Britain, 1837-1860, Craig L. Foster

Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of Mormonism into Great Britain was met with both success and resistence. The major form of British resistence to the Latter-day Saints was through the press. From the introduction of the Church into Great Britain in 1837 to 1860, numerous anti-Mormon pamphlets were published to discourage people from associating with what was considered to be a strange American sect.

The major themes of a number of these tracts have been analyzed in order to gain a better understanding of how the Mormons were perceived by the British. Some of the major themes included the evil character of Joseph …

Competitive Fire: An Historical Descriptive Analysis Of Adherence To Traditional Journalistic Tenets In Television News Coverage Of The Mark Hofmann Salt Lake City Bombings, B. William Silcock Jan 1989

Competitive Fire: An Historical Descriptive Analysis Of Adherence To Traditional Journalistic Tenets In Television News Coverage Of The Mark Hofmann Salt Lake City Bombings, B. William Silcock

Theses and Dissertations

Television news contains factors of time constraints and deadlines that add pressures to the underlying rules of objectivity, fairness, and bias. This study seeks to determine if the elements of "responsible journalism" dissipate in television news coverage of a highly significant, developing news story. In other words, how well do the rules hold up under pressure? The momentous story selected for observation was the Mark Hofmann bombings in Salt Lake City, Utah. The focus centered on the coverage by local stations rather than the network television news operations.

A Key For Evaluating Nephite Geographies, John E. Clark Jan 1989

A Key For Evaluating Nephite Geographies, John E. Clark

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

Review of Deciphering the Geography of the Book of Mormon (1988), by F. Richard Hauck.

The first question in dealing with Book of Mormon geography should be whether the geography first the facts of the Book of Mormon. Clark reconstructs an elemental geography and examines internal clues for distances between locations and the surrounding terrain. To evaluate geographies, Clark summarizes ten simple points having to do with the narrow neck of land, the coastlines, the wildernesses, the valleys, the rivers, a lake, and the relative locations of Zarahemla, Bountiful, Nephi, and Cumorah. Using these criteria, he evaluates the Sorenson and …
