The National Coordinating Committee on Japanese Library Resources (NCC) was established in December 1991 in order to coordinate, develop, and locate funding for projects in cooperative Japanese collection development, improved access, education in Japanese librarianship, and other related activities; to gather information and articulate the needs of librarians, scholars, and others in relation to information resources; and to expand the work of advising and collaborating with funding agencies in developing relevant and valuable programs.

Adaptive Boundary Detection Using “Live-Wire” Two-Dimensional Dynamic Programming, William A. Barrett, Bryan S. Morse, Eric N. Mortensen, Jayaram Udupa Oct 1992

Adaptive Boundary Detection Using “Live-Wire” Two-Dimensional Dynamic Programming, William A. Barrett, Bryan S. Morse, Eric N. Mortensen, Jayaram Udupa

Faculty Publications

An adaptive boundary detection algorithm that uses two-dimensional dynamic programming is presented. The algorithm is less constrained than previous one-dimensional dynamic programming algorithms and allows the user to interactively determine the mathematically optimal boundary between a user-selected seed point and any other dynamically selected "free” point in the image. Interactive movement of the free point by the cursor causes the boundary to behave like a “live wire” as it adapts to the new minimum cost path between the seed point and the currently selected free point. The algorithm can also be adapted or customized to learn boundary-defining features for a …

Soil Loosening Processes Following The Abandonment Of Two Arid Western Nevada Townsites, Paul A. Knapp Sep 1992

Soil Loosening Processes Following The Abandonment Of Two Arid Western Nevada Townsites, Paul A. Knapp

Great Basin Naturalist

Soil compaction was measured at four sites within two abandoned mining camps in the western Great Basin Desert, Nevada. Bulk density and macroporosity values were generated from soil samples collected in areas of different land use intensities in camps that had been abandoned for approximately 70 years. Results show that significant differences remain in bulk density values between abandoned roads and undisturbed areas in both towns, and that the areas around foundation peripheries are still significantly more compacted in one town. There were no significant differences between land use groups as measured by macroporosity. Estimated soil recovery, based on a …

Diatom Flora Of Beaver Dam Creek, Washington County, Utah, Usa, Kurtis H. Yearsley, Samuel R. Rushforth, Jeffrey R. Johansen

Great Basin Naturalist

The diatom flora of Beaver Dam Creek, Washington County, Utah, was studied. The study area is in a warm Mojave Desert environment at an elevation between 810 and 850 m. A total of 99 taxa were identified from composite samples taken in the fall, winter, spring, and summer seasons. These taxa are all broadly distributed and no endemic species were encountered. Three new records for the state of Utah were identified: Gomphoneis eriense Skv. & Mayer, Navicula elginensis var. lata. (M. Perag.) Patr., and Nitzschia calida Grun. The most important taxa throughout the study as determined by multiplying percent presence …

Species Of The Cretaceous Tree Fern Tempskya From Utah, William D. Tidwell, Naomi Hebbert Sep 1992

Species Of The Cretaceous Tree Fern Tempskya From Utah, William D. Tidwell, Naomi Hebbert

Faculty Publications

Nine species of the permineralized stems of Tempskya were investigated from the Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain and Burro Canyon Formations, and the lower Upper Cretaceous Dakota Formation in central and southeastern Utah. Tempskya jonesii, T. stichkae, and T. readii are new and are differentiated on the basis of the radial orientation of their dorsiventral stems, their internodal lengths, the lack of sclerenchyma in the inner cortex of T. jonesii, the three nearly continuous zones of sclerenchyma in the inner cortex off T. stichkae, and the completely sclerotic inner cortex of T. readii. Specimens of T. jonesii and T. minor were …

When Lehi's Party Arrived In The Land, Did They Find Others There?, John L. Sorenson Jul 1992

When Lehi's Party Arrived In The Land, Did They Find Others There?, John L. Sorenson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

A number of statements in the Book of Mormon text indicate the presence in Lehi’s promised land of peoples other than those descended from Lehi’s party. Reasons the topic is not addressed more explicitly in the record include a focus on the Nephites (and not on other people), a generic treatment of Lamanites, an a desire not to waste space on something obvious or insignificant. Clear evidence for the presence of others in substantial populations is present in the Book of Mormon. The demographic or cultural history of Lehi’s literal descendants must take into account these other groups.

Limhi In The Library, John Gee Jul 1992

Limhi In The Library, John Gee

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Analysis of comparative data and historical background indicates that the quotations in Mosiah 7–22 are historically accurate. Further examination of the quotations of Limhi shows that they depend heavily on other sources. This implies some things about the character of Limhi and provides as well attendant lessons for our own day.

Economic Insights From The Book Of Mormon, Lindon J. Robison Jul 1992

Economic Insights From The Book Of Mormon, Lindon J. Robison

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Economic systems are distinguished by their emphasis on equity and efficiency. Market controls are justified because of the need for equity. Free markets are justified because of the need for private incentives and efficiency. Most countries of the world today have adopted a combination of controls and free-market incentives. The Book of Mormon teaches that only through caring can equity and efficiency be simultaneously achieved.

“Secret Combinations” Revisited, Daniel C. Peterson Jul 1992

“Secret Combinations” Revisited, Daniel C. Peterson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The claim that the Gadianton robbers in the Book of Mormon are merely a reflection of nineteenth-century Masons, who were referred to in the late 1820s as “secret combinations,” is false since an 1826 use of the phrase establishes that those words were not used exclusively to describe Masons.

A Correlation Of The Sidon River And The Lands Of Manti And Zarahemla With The Southern End Of The Rio Grijalva (San Miguel), Janet F. Hilton, John L. Hilton Jul 1992

A Correlation Of The Sidon River And The Lands Of Manti And Zarahemla With The Southern End Of The Rio Grijalva (San Miguel), Janet F. Hilton, John L. Hilton

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

We construct a detailed geographical model of the Nephite homeland areas of Manti, Zarahemla, and the river Sidon using the Book of Mormon text of around 80 BC. This model assumes that these areas are located in Mesoamerica, that the names of their surrounding seas do not necessarily correspond to local compass directions, and that the directions stated in the text are to be understood in the nontechnical normal English sense. We then describe the southern end of the Grijalva river basin, located across the southern part of the Mexico–Guatemala border. We nominate this area as a possible candidate for …
