Presenting Italian Comparative And Superlative Forms Of Adjectives To College L2 Beginners, Ilona Klein
Presenting Italian Comparative And Superlative Forms Of Adjectives To College L2 Beginners, Ilona Klein
Faculty Publications
This study treats the necessity to de-emphasize the focus on grammar teaching alone in L2, and to introduce methods which are not teacher-centered, so as to enable students to interact more among each other.
By using comparative and superlative forms of adjectives – but in reality using a sequence of teaching techniques that could be applied to other grammatical situations – this article presents the use of sea shells as a visual and tactile aid which allows students to shift their L2 efforts from an abstract notion to a concrete usage.
This study offers a tool to attempt a balance …
The Effect Of Health Insurance On Retirement, Brigitte C. Madrian
The Effect Of Health Insurance On Retirement, Brigitte C. Madrian
Faculty Publications
FOR DECADES health insurance in the United States has been provided to most nonelderly Americans through their own or a family member's employment. This system of employment-based health insurance has evolved largely because of the substantial cost advantages that employers enjoy in supplying health insurance. By pooling large numbers of individuals, employers face significantly lower administrative expenses than do individuals. In addition, employer expenditures on health insurance are tax deductible, but individual expenditures are generally not.1
Despite these cost advantages, there is widespread dissatisfaction with this system of employment-based health insurance. Many people are excluded because not all employers …
Phytoplankton In A High-Elevation Lake, Colorado Front Range: Application To Lake Acidification, Dale Toetz, John Windell
Phytoplankton In A High-Elevation Lake, Colorado Front Range: Application To Lake Acidification, Dale Toetz, John Windell
Great Basin Naturalist
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the status of phytoplankton in Lake Albion in the Green Lakes valley, Colorado Front Range, with respect to lake acidification. The research was conducted during the inventory phase of the Long-Term Ecological Research program of the University of Colorado at the Niwot Ridge/Green Lakes valley site. Lake Albion is a small subalpine lake on the terminal end of the Green Lakes valley (13 ha, mean depth 6 m, and surface pH 6.51). Net plankton were collected six times during June–August 1984. Ancillary data on nutrients, temperature, chlorophyll a, and Secchi disc …

Long-Term Fluctuations Of An Isolated Populaton Of The Pacific Chorus Frog (Psuedacris Regilla) In Northwestern Nevada, Norman H. Weitzel, Howard R. Panik
Great Basin Naturalist
In 80% of the years between 1975 and 1989 chorus frogs were able to produce offspring that completed metamorphosis and became members of the next generation. During 3 of these 15 years (1975, 1983, and 1986), floods annihilated chorus frogs in the breeding pond. Between 1905 and 1989 this geographically isolated population of Pseudacris regilla, the Pacific chorus frog, located at the western edge of the Great Basin in northwestern Nevada, became reestablished after 10 natural physical disturbances including spring flash floods, numerous kill-offs by sudden drastic rises in water temperature, and stream dry-ups. Ninety percent of the frogs …
Association Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies With Cattle Point Attractants In The Northern Great Plains, Daniel S. Licht, Kenneth D. Sanchez
Association Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies With Cattle Point Attractants In The Northern Great Plains, Daniel S. Licht, Kenneth D. Sanchez
Great Basin Naturalist
In October 1991 we recorded all black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies and cattle points in a 1248-km2 study area in southwest North Dakota and southeast Montana. Cattle point attractants were defined as fabricated water tanks and long-term supplemental feed sites. We found that a significant number of prairie dog colonies encompassed or adjoined cattle point attractants (p < .001). Prairie dog colonies associated with cattle point attractants were a mean distance of 1.0 km from the next nearest town. The existence of cattle point attractants may encourage prairie dog colonization. Conversely, refraining from using long-term cattle point attractants can discourage prairie dog colonization.

Human Fatalities Caused By Venomous Animals In Utah, 1900–90, Richard C. Straight, James L. Glenn
Great Basin Naturalist
An examination of death certificates at the Utah Bureau of Health Statistics from 1900 through 1990 indicates that Utah has a very low incidence of human fatalities due to venomous bites and stings. During this 91-year period, 20 fatalities were recorded from bee (10) or hornet (1) stings, spider bites (4), and rattlesnake bites (5). There were eight additional fatalities during the early part of this century recorded "insect bite," "apparently insect bite," or "unknown agent poisoning," some of which may have included spiders. No deaths were recorded from Gila monster or scorpion evenomizations, although in 1962 one death in …

Developing New Japanese Collections And Services At The University Of California, San Diego, 1988-1993, Eiji Yutani
Journal of East Asian Libraries
March 15 of this year marked the fifth anniversary of my arrival at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). On a bright, warm spring day in 1988,1 moved to the arid, scenic suburban La Jolla campus from the equally beautiful and balmy city of Berkeley where I had worked as a Japanese bibliographer for the century-old University of California, Berkeley (UCB) Library for two and a half decades. The past five years here in southern California have been one of the finest chapters of my professional life — perhaps the last — and a truly fascinating one. As I …
Late Bloom In The Desert: The East Asian Library Collection And Services At Arizona State University, Ai-Hwa Wu
Late Bloom In The Desert: The East Asian Library Collection And Services At Arizona State University, Ai-Hwa Wu
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Unlike the majority of East Asian library collections which were established with the full support and well thought-out plans from the library administration, the East Asian collection at ASU started in 1968 with a somewhat make-do arrangement. There was no librarian hired or designated to take charge of the basic library functions of East Asian language materials; the cataloging responsibility for these materials was added to the duties of a catalog librarian who happened to have a Chinese language background and was given an assistant who knew the Japanese and Korean languages.

My initial thought about what to contribute to this commemorative issue included such matters as International Interlibrary Loan (IILL), resource sharing, shared cataloging projects and, in general, defining proper fields of cooperation between the European Association of Sinological Librarians (EASL) and the Committee on East Asian Libraries. Since these matters were already voiced and discussed during EASL's visit to Washington and other Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) libraries in April 1992,1 (as chairman of EASL) decided not to repeat them again. However, it goes without saying that these issues should not be dropped or neglected and it is my sincere …

Celebrating the one-hundredth issue of the CEAL Bulletin is, I believe, a good opportunity to think about the future of the East Asian library. This essay is, however, not to forecast the future course of the East Asian library, but rather to present a vision, or to throw out some thoughts on desirable future developments in the East Asian library.

A Branch Apart: East Asian Collections In A Research Library Context, Diane E. Perushek
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Much has been written in library literature of late about access and ownership and how libraries should respond organizationally to the new role libraries are developing to meet the dual challenges of pervasive information technology and reduced budgets. There are repeated calls for libraries to give customized service, be intimately aware of users' needs and deliver documents at the point of use. In an article on the efficacy of branch libraries entitled "Organization Misfits," it is posited that departmental (or "branch") libraries, due to their size and flexibility, can provide models for this type of service with little change to …

Letters From 1915 To The End Of The War, Othmar Ammann, Lilly Ammann
Swiss American Historical Society Review
My dear parents,
Tomorrow the last steamship that can bring you our Christmas greetings is leaving, so that means: hurry. Just a few words, but from the heart.
One is carried along here in the non-ending stream of business so much that one can hardly catch one's breath in order to appreciate the ideal side of life. However, with the approach of the holidays, spirits are lifted. With great excitement and wonderment, young and old await the festive days. What will Christmas bring, how will the New Year begin? This is what each one is asking himself and with thousands …

Finally I get to write you a few lines from duty. As Papa probably has already informed you, I went from Basel to Monthal, where I met Mama and Werner, as well as Rosa and Manja Labhart from Moscow. Werner was very happy. He is thin but looks strong and healthy. He did not want to answer my question of whether he would like to come back to America with me after the war. But I am decided about bringing him back with me. On the same evening I also visited Onkel Hermann and David in Zurich. I also met …
