Exceptional Fish Yield In A Mid-Elevation Utah Trout Reservoir: Effects Of Angling Regulations, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, David Barnard, Thomas Pettengill Jan 1996

Exceptional Fish Yield In A Mid-Elevation Utah Trout Reservoir: Effects Of Angling Regulations, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, David Barnard, Thomas Pettengill

Great Basin Naturalist

We used creel surveys to evaluate how a change from a 6-mon to a year-round fishing season affected the sport fish harvest in East Canyon Reservoir (Utah), a 277-ha mesoeutrophic system. Under the year-round season, fishing effort was 840 angler-h·ha−1·yr−1, and 360 trout ha−1 were captured. Catch rates were proportional to estimated trout densities in the reservoir, ranging from 1.06 during the winter ice fishery, to 0.18 fish angler−1·h−1 in July. Ninety-nine percent of fish harvested were rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus myskiss). Thirty-two percent of the 300,000 75-mm fingerling trout stocked …

Habitat Affinities Of Bats From Northeastern Nevada, Mark A. Ports, Peter V. Bradley Jan 1996

Habitat Affinities Of Bats From Northeastern Nevada, Mark A. Ports, Peter V. Bradley

Great Basin Naturalist

Bat surveys were completed in 6 habitat types in eastern Nevada between 1980 and 1994. Twelve species of bats and 578 individuals were identified from 33 trap localities in 144 trap nights. There were weak correlations between bat species richness and January maximum temperatures (0.728, P < 0.05) and mean annual days with 0° C or lower (−0.704, P < 0.05). Bat species richness exhibited no correlation with annual normal precipitation, January minimum temperatures, July minimum temperatures, and July maximum temperatures. It appears that bat species richness is highest in portions of northeastern Nevada typified by sedimentary deposits (limestone, dolomite). Igneous mountain ranges (basalt, volcanic ash) generally had moderate bat species richness, and metamorphic ranges (quartzite) typically had low bat species richness. Notable range extensions include Antrozous pallidus (from central Nye County north to the Nevada-Idaho border, approximately 450 km), Tadarida brasiliensis (approximately 350 km north), and Pipistrellus hesperus (approximately 350 km north). Also, the presence of Lasionycteris noctivagans, Lasiurus cinereus, and Corynorhinus townsendii was confirmed.

Arizona Distribution Of Three Sonoran Desert Anurans: Bufo Retiformis, Gastrophryne Olivacea, And Pternohyla Fodiens, Brian K. Sullivan, Robert W. Bowker, Keith B. Malmos, Erik W. A. Gergus Jan 1996

Arizona Distribution Of Three Sonoran Desert Anurans: Bufo Retiformis, Gastrophryne Olivacea, And Pternohyla Fodiens, Brian K. Sullivan, Robert W. Bowker, Keith B. Malmos, Erik W. A. Gergus

Great Basin Naturalist

We surveyed historic collecting localities in south central Arizona during July, August, and September 1993–94 to determine the presence of 3 little-known Sonoran Desert anurans, Bufo retiformis, Gastrophryne olivacea, and Pternohyla fodiens. All 3 species were present at most historic localities visited under appropriate conditions (following rainfall in July and August). Pternohyla fodiens was restricted to San Simon Wash and associated tributaries in south central Pima County. Gastrophryne olivacea ranged from Vekol Valley in extreme southern Maricopa County south to the Mexican border, and southeast near Tucson and Nogales in Pima and Santa Cruz counties. Bufo retiformis occurred over …

From Presence To Practice: Jesus, The Sacrament Prayers, The Priesthood, And Church Discipline In 3 Nephi 18 And Moroni 2-6, John W. Welch

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

This paper explores several relationships between the texts in Moroni 2–6 and the words and deeds of Jesus in 3 Nephi 18. The opening chapters of Moroni contain the words that Jesus Christ spoke to the twelve when he ordained them to the high priesthood, the words used by the Nephites in administering the sacrament, and also a few words by Moroni about baptism, church membership, congregational worship, and ecclesiastical discipline. This study demonstrates that these instructions and procedures were rooted in the words and deeds of the resurrected Jesus in 3 Nephi 18 as he administered the sacrament, gave …

Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Highway Mortality Of Mule Deer On Newly Constructed Roads At Jordanelle Reservoir, Utah, Laura A. Romin, John A. Bissonette Jan 1996

Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Highway Mortality Of Mule Deer On Newly Constructed Roads At Jordanelle Reservoir, Utah, Laura A. Romin, John A. Bissonette

Great Basin Naturalist

In this paper we evaluated traffic characteristics and vegetation and topographic features associated with mule deer kills on 3 highways (US 40, SR 32, SR 248) in northeastern Utah. We also compared number, and sex and age composition of roadkills to that of the living population observed during spotlight counts. From 15 October 1991 to 14 October 1993 we documented 397 deer roadkills: 51.6% were does, 18.9% bucks, 21.7% fawns, and 7.8% could not be classified. Sixty-seven percent of adult kills were ≤2.5 yr of age. Kill composition compared closely to spotlight counts. Of 1515 spotlight deer, 65.2% were does, …

Lds Counselor Ratings Of Problems Occurring Among Lds Premarital And Remarital Couples, Travis R. Adams Jan 1996

Lds Counselor Ratings Of Problems Occurring Among Lds Premarital And Remarital Couples, Travis R. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

A fundamental purpose of this study was to provide marriage preparation providers with counselors perceptions of potential marital problem areas. A structured questionnaire was sent to LDS counselors, defined as members of the Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists (AMCAP). These LDS counselors rated 29 problem areas that LDS couples, (members members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), might encounter in a first marriage or remarriage. Results (N=231) were analyzed in an attempt to determine the most frequent, most damaging and most difficult problems to deal with in LDS first marriages and remarriages.

Findings suggest that "communication", …

Testimony In Art: John Hafen's Illustrations For “O My Father”, Dawn Pheysey Jan 1996

Testimony In Art: John Hafen's Illustrations For “O My Father”, Dawn Pheysey

BYU Studies

When artist John Hafen was a young man, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sent him to the Julian Academy in Paris so that he could improve his skills and further the kingdom by painting murals for the Church. Towards the end of his life, Hafen used the artistic skills he had developed to create eight illustrations for the famous poem “O My Father” by Eliza R. Snow. His lifetime of struggle gave him a spiritual maturity that is clear in his sincere and beautiful work. The art for "O My Father" has been called one …

From Junction City To Denmark, Visti Favrholt Jan 1996

From Junction City To Denmark, Visti Favrholt

The Bridge

Standing on the deck in the cold of the night, I could

distinguish lights some distance away on both sides of the

ship. It was clear we were in a kind of channel. Another

passenger said it was a Norwegian fjord. How he could

tell, I didn't know, because it was pretty dark out there.

But one thing, was very clear. The captain of our ship, for

all his golden buttons and stripes, must have got lost

because he was supposed to find Denmark. Columbus

could have done better. I stood there in the dark and

thought about the matter …

The Brigham Young University Folklore Of Hugh Winder Nibley: Gifted Scholar, Eccentric Professor And Latter-Day Saint Spiritual Guide, Jane D. Brady Jan 1996

The Brigham Young University Folklore Of Hugh Winder Nibley: Gifted Scholar, Eccentric Professor And Latter-Day Saint Spiritual Guide, Jane D. Brady

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the stories which revolve around folk legend Hugh Winder Nibley and what those stories mean to the people of Brigham Young University. Folklore reveals who we are and what is important to us. But, interestingly, folklore tends to reveal more about the person telling the story than about the subject of the story itself. People can't remember every story they hear. The ones they do remember are important to them. The stories are important because they fulfill basic needs of the teller. Such needs are a desire to look up to a hero, a need to fit …

Journey: Connections To A Pioneer Past, Judy Shell Busk Jan 1996

Journey: Connections To A Pioneer Past, Judy Shell Busk

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a record of a journey into the pioneer past both literally and metaphorically. The physical journey retracing the Oregon and Mormon trails was made in September of 1993, the year I was a National Endowment for the Humanities/Reader's Digest Teacher-Scholar; however, my intellectual and emotional journey into the lives of pioneer women covers several years of study. I compare my life experiences with those of pioneer women whom I studied, using geographical settings on the trail trip as memory triggers. My husband, as my traveling companion, plays an important role in this journey of discovery. Major themes …

Aerodynamic Mechanisms Underlying Treatment-Related Changes In Vocal Intensity In Patients With Parkinson Disease, Christopher Dromey, Lorraine Olson Ramig Jan 1996

Aerodynamic Mechanisms Underlying Treatment-Related Changes In Vocal Intensity In Patients With Parkinson Disease, Christopher Dromey, Lorraine Olson Ramig

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to document changes in aerodynamic and glottographic aspects of vocal function in patients with Parkinson disease who received two forms of high effort treatment. Previous reports (Ramig, Countryman, Thompson, & Horii, 1995) have documented increased sound pressure level (SPL) following treatment that trained phonation and respiration (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment: LSVT), but not for treatment that trained respiration only (R). In order to examine the mechanisms underlying these differences, measures of maximum flow declination rate (MFDR) and estimated subglottal pressure (Psub)were made before and after treatment. A measure of relative vocal fold adduction (EGGW) …

The Parkinson Larynx: Tremor And Videostroboscopic Findings, Christopher Dromey, Kathe S. Perez, Lorraine Olson Ramig, Marshall E. Smith

Faculty Publications

Summary: Patients with Parkinson's disease have a high incidence of speech, voice, and laryngeal abnormalities. To characterize laryngeal abnormalities, visual-perceptual ratings of endoscopic and stroboscopic examinations of 22 patients diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease and 7 patients with Parkinson's-plus syndromes were carried out by four trained viewers. Incidence of tremor, tremor location, phase closure, phase symmetry, amplitude, and mucosal waveform were scored. Tremor was observed in one or more of these conditions--rest, normal pitch and loudness, or loud phonation--for most of the 29 patients. Fifty-five percent of the idiopathic Parkinson's disease patients had tremor, with the primary location being vertical …

Let's Surf-The-Net! World-Wide Web (Www) Sites In Italy, Or: How/Why Include A Web-Browser Component In Culture And Civilization Classes, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

First, this essay details the technical elements required to set up a computer for Web-surfing, then it discusses the rationale for a Web-browser component in Culture and Civilization courses. The first part of this study (the technical portion) is geared specifically toward teachers with little or no familiarity with the Internet and the World-Wide Web. In the second part of the article, the applied-pedagogy aspects of Web-browsing are provided for all colleagues in the profession, proficient or not in cyberspace surfing. This article argues that the internet and the World-Wide Web are here to stay and that, within certain limitations, …

Development Of A Method For Studying Thematic Content Of Psychotherapy Sessions, P. Scott Richards, Susan D. Lonborg Jan 1996

Development Of A Method For Studying Thematic Content Of Psychotherapy Sessions, P. Scott Richards, Susan D. Lonborg

Faculty Publications

The authors developed a measure for categorizing the nature of the topic that clients and therapists discuss from moment to moment during psychotherapy. The Counseling Topic Classification System (CTCS) contains 55 topics and 8 emotional categories. It was used to code the thematic content of Donald Meichenbaum's and Hans Strupp's initial therapy sessions with a client named Richard. Our findings provided preliminary evidence that the CTCS is useful for coding the core topic of initial therapy sessions and that thematic content may be an important process and contextual vari- able. Methods are described for studying thematic content as a contextual …
