Human Trampling Effects On Regeneration And Age Structures Of Pinus Edulis And Juniperus Monosperma, Alex S. Tonnesen, James J. Ebersole Mar 1997

Human Trampling Effects On Regeneration And Age Structures Of Pinus Edulis And Juniperus Monosperma, Alex S. Tonnesen, James J. Ebersole

Great Basin Naturalist

We examined effects of human foot traffic on age structures and densities of seedlings and saplings of Pinus edulis (Colorado pinyon) and Junisperus monosperma (one-seed juniper) in a heavily used urban park, Garden of the Gods, Colorado. Age structures show no stand-destroying disturbances, but they do contain small peaks 85–95 yr ago (minimum age), which have been interpreted as responses to heavy grazing. For Pinus edulis reverse J-shaped age structures indicate a strongly reproducing population, while flat age structures of J. monosperma show low present reproduction. Young trees showed strong preferences for establishing under existing trees and shrubs and not …

On The Taxonomic Status Of Eriogonum Robustum (Polygonaceae), A Rare Endemic In Western Nevada, Kristin F. Kuyper, Ulla Yandell, Robert S. Nowak

Great Basin Naturalist

Evidence from the morphology, genetics, and biogeography of a rare endemic from western Nevada, Erigonum robustum, is presented to determine the most accurate taxonomic classification. Previous authors have classified E. robustrum Greene both as a species and as a variety E. lobbii Torrey & Gray. However, results of a morphometric comparison for 9 characters establish that significant morphological differentiation exists between E. robustum and E. lobbii. In addition, results of a genetic study using protein electrophoresis indicated that genetic differentiation may exist between these 2 taxa. Furthermore, the 2 taxa are geographically, ecologically, and reproductively isolated. Finally, the …

Distribution And Abundance Of Native Bonneville Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Utah) In Southwestern Utah, Dale K. Hepworth, Michael J. Ottenbacher, Louis N. Berg Mar 1997

Distribution And Abundance Of Native Bonneville Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki Utah) In Southwestern Utah, Dale K. Hepworth, Michael J. Ottenbacher, Louis N. Berg

Great Basin Naturalist

The Bonneville cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki utah; BCT) was once abundant throughout the Bonneville Basin. In southwestern Utah, however, only 3 local populations of the subspecies were known to exist in 1977, when conservation efforts to protect and replicate them began. By 1995 remnant populations were known in 6 streams, and replicate populations had been established in an additional 16. Populations of BCT in southwestern Utah streams were surveyed by electrofishing in 1994 and 1995 to describe the subspecies' status. Estimated densities of age-1 and older BCT ranged from 118 to 546 fish per km. Biomass estimates ranged …

Evaluation Of Fish Diplostomatosis In Strawberry Reservoir Following Rotenone Application: A Five-Year Study, Victor H. Inchausty, Richard A. Heckmann

Great Basin Naturalist

Strawberry Reservoir, Wasatch County, Utah, was treated with rotenone in August 1990. For 5 yr following treatment, about 2000 fish from 5 different species were examined for eye metacercariae (Diplostomum). Incidence dropped from 88.0% before to 0.1% after treatment for cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki), from 93.0% to 0.1% for rainbow trout (O. mykiss), and from 19.0% to 10.0% for redside shiner (Richardsonius balteatus). Average numbers of metacercariae per eye also dropped from 6.8 to 0.1 for cutthroat trout, from 23.1 to 0.1 for rainbow trout, and from 18.9 to 0.1 for redside …

Asian Tapeworm (Bothriocephalus Acheilognathi) In Native Fishes From The Little Colorado River, Grand Canyon, Arizona, Robert W. Clarkson, Anthony T. Robinson, Timothy L. Hoffnagle

Great Basin Naturalist

Examination of gastrointestinal tracts of native cyprinids from the Little Colorado River (LCR) in Grand Canyon, Arizona, 1990–1994, revealed varying rates of prevalence and infrapopulation levels of Asian tapeworm (Bothriocephalus acheilognathi). Mean prevalence was 28% (range 0–78%) in humpback chub (Gila cypha) and 8% (range 0–46%) in speckled dace (Rhinichthys osculus), with infrapopulations as high as 46 and 28, respectively. We also note Asian tapeworm infection of nonnatives common carp (Cyprinus carpio), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), and plains killifish (Fundulus zebrinus) from the LCR. Reported pathogenic and chronic …

Swiss Recollections, Arnold H. Price Feb 1997

Swiss Recollections, Arnold H. Price

Swiss American Historical Society Review

I am naturally very much pleased to have been honored to give an account of my diverse encounters with Switzerland and matters Swiss. And in this connection, I should point out that I have no Swiss ancestors and that my relationship to Helvetia is purely elective on my part. I was born in Bonn on the Rhine (a well-known Swiss export), where my father was an English-language instructor; my mother came from a Rhenish family. While growing up in Germany, my parents decided that I should spend my summer vacation at a home (Kinderheim) near Flims in Graubünden. …

Comparative Power Of Three Author-Attribution Techniques For Differentiating Authors, John B. Archer, John L. Hilton, G. Bruce Schaalje Jan 1997

Comparative Power Of Three Author-Attribution Techniques For Differentiating Authors, John B. Archer, John L. Hilton, G. Bruce Schaalje

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Over the last twenty years, various objective author-attribution techniques have been applied to the English Book of Mormon in order to shed light on the question of multiple authorship of Book of Mormon texts. Two methods, one based on rates of use of noncontextual words and one based on word-pattern ratios, measure patterns consistent with multiple authorship in the Book of Mormon. Another method, based on vocabulary-richness measures, suggests that only one author is involved. These apparently contradictory results are reconciled by showing that for texts of known authorship, the method based on vocabulary-richness measures is not as powerful in …

A Short Addition To Length: Some Relative Frequencies Of Circumstantial Structures, Brian D. Stubbs Jan 1997

A Short Addition To Length: Some Relative Frequencies Of Circumstantial Structures, Brian D. Stubbs

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

In previous articles I have discussed the nature and prominence of certain linguistic structures in the Book of Mormon that are typical of hal-clauses translated from Hebrew or Egyptian. This article compares the frequencies of those structures in three works produced through the instrumentality of Joseph Smith: the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, only the first of which is a translation from an ancient Near Eastern language. The results of this preliminary investigation into styles and these linguistic structures as found in these three works …

“As A Garment In A Hot Furnace”, John A. Tvedtnes

The Sacred Tree Of The Ancient Maya, Allen J. Christenson Jan 1997

The Sacred Tree Of The Ancient Maya, Allen J. Christenson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Sacred trees, representing the power of life to grow from the underworld realm of the dead, are a common motif in the art and literature of the ancient Maya of Mesoamerica. Such trees are similar in concept to the tree of life described in the Book of Mormon, as well as to the mythic traditions of many other contemporary world cultures. Hieroglyphic inscriptions and sixteenth-century highland Maya texts describe a great world tree that was erected at the dawn of the present age to stand as the axis point of the cosmos. In its fruit-laden form, it personified the god …

Feasting On The Word: The Literary Testimony Of The Book Of Mormon, Richard Dilworth Rust Jan 1997

Feasting On The Word: The Literary Testimony Of The Book Of Mormon, Richard Dilworth Rust

Maxwell Institute Publications

Though the King James Version of the Bible has long been admired for the elegance and beauty of its language, its companion volume, the Book of Mormon, has only recently begun to be truly appreciated for its own literary merits.

In Feasting on the Word, Richard Rust shows the Book of Mormon to be not only a bounteous doctrinal storehouse but also a treasury of literary riches, bidding us to taste, touch, see, and hear in order to experience things of the Spirit. Rust explains that the text was planned purposefully and shaped artistically so that form and content …

The Influence Of Out-Group Network Ties On The Television Usage And Attitudes Of Mormon Women, Lois D. Brown Jan 1997

The Influence Of Out-Group Network Ties On The Television Usage And Attitudes Of Mormon Women, Lois D. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Analysis of survey data collected from more than 400 LDS women (n=429) indicates that as the number of non-LDS or inactive LDS network associates increases, so does the women's identification with modern female TV characters. The frequency of network conversations about television also correlates to several television behaviors and attitudes such as watching entertainment and informational TV programming, identifying with modern characters, and regarding TV as useful. Mirroring the national trend, LDS women who are more educated use television less. A model is presented which details the flow and impact of personal network influence on the television habits and attitudes …

Damped Diocotron Quasi-Modes Of Non-Neutral Plasmas And Inviscid Fluids, S. Neil Rasband, Ross L. Spencer Jan 1997

Damped Diocotron Quasi-Modes Of Non-Neutral Plasmas And Inviscid Fluids, S. Neil Rasband, Ross L. Spencer

Faculty Publications

Computations of damped diocotron oscillations (quasi-modes) are described for non-neutral plasmas and inviscid fluids. The numerical method implements a suggestion made by Briggs, Daugherty, and Levy some 25 years ago [Phys. Fluids 13, 421 (1970)] to push the branch line that forms the continuum into the complex w-plane by solving the mode equation in the complex r-plane. For the special case of power-law density profiles the calculation finds the same quasi-mode frequencies found recently by Corngold [Phys. Plasmas 2, 620 (1995)]. It is found that the feature of the continuum eigenfunctions which indicates the presence of a nearby quasi-mode is …

Radar Backscatter Measurement Accuracy For A Spaceborne Pencil-Beam Wind Scatterometer With Transmit Modulation, David G. Long, Michael W. Spencer Jan 1997

Radar Backscatter Measurement Accuracy For A Spaceborne Pencil-Beam Wind Scatterometer With Transmit Modulation, David G. Long, Michael W. Spencer

Faculty Publications

Scatterometers are remote sensing radars designed to measure near-surface winds over the ocean. The difficulties of accommodating traditional fan-beam scatterometers on spacecraft has lead to the development of a scanning pencil-beam instrument known as SeaWinds. SeaWinds will be part of the Japanese Advanced Earth Observing Satellite II (ADEOS-II) to be launched in 1999. To analyze the performance of the SeaWinds design, a new expression for the measurement accuracy of a pencil-beam system is required. In this paper the authors derive a general expression for the backscatter measurement accuracy for a pencil-beam scatterometer which includes the effects of transmit signal modulation …
