Small Business Promotion And Microlending: A Comparative Assessment Of Jamaican And Israeli Ngos, Benson Honig Apr 2000

Small Business Promotion And Microlending: A Comparative Assessment Of Jamaican And Israeli Ngos, Benson Honig

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Loan programs in two different countries, Israel and Jamaica, are compared and contrasted, in order to identify common elements of project design, selection, and institutional norms. Utilizing agency theory, this article examines what types of borrowers successfully navigate the credit market and to what extent the bureaucratic processes employed by institutions influence and bias outcomes in unpredicted ways in organizations. Entrepreneurs are well recognized as coming from a wide range of backgrounds; indeed, it is the very heterogeneity of their origins that allows many to provide the newness of perspective so necessary for their activities. However, hidden or tacit institutional …

Client Exit Surveys: A Tool For Understanding Client Drop-Out, Anton Simanowitz Apr 2000

Client Exit Surveys: A Tool For Understanding Client Drop-Out, Anton Simanowitz

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

The ability of microfinance institutions (MFIs) to reach and to demonstrate a positive impact on their clients is increasingly recognized as a core principal in poverty-focused microfinance, and there is a growing move toward lower-cost, practitioner-friendly approaches to impact assessment. Interviews with program drop-outs are an important source of information, and they are incorporated into a number of impact-assessment systems. This article explores how useful impact information can be gained from drop-out interviews and presents ideas from the experience of the Small Enterprise Foundation (SEF) in South Africa. Drop-outs provide a very valuable source of information for program improvement, relating …

How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell Apr 2000

How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell

Theses and Dissertations

The news media link anthropological discovery and the communications discipline. In this study, press stories about the Yanomami Indians of northern Brazil and neighboring Venezuela have been studied and narratively analyzed according to Narrative Paradigm Theory. While not an audience study, plausible interpretations of ideal audience member values and insights into the question of human identity are presented. It is argued that the media are storytellers who tell the audience about itself by telling it about others recursively.

Press coverage of the Yanomami is divided into eight general categories. These include the environment, effects of "civilization," warfare/violence, massacre, gold miners, …

Modeling The Statistical Time And Angle Of Arrival Characteristics Of An Indoor Multipath Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Brian D. Jeffs, A. Lee Swindlehurst, Quentin H. Spencer Mar 2000

Modeling The Statistical Time And Angle Of Arrival Characteristics Of An Indoor Multipath Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Brian D. Jeffs, A. Lee Swindlehurst, Quentin H. Spencer

Faculty Publications

Most previously proposed statistical models for the indoor multipath channel include only time of arrival characteristics. However, in order to use statistical models in simulating or analyzing the performance of systems employing spatial diversity combining, information about angle of arrival statistics is also required. Ideally, it would be desirable to characterize the full spare-time nature of the channel. In this paper, a system is described that was used to collect simultaneous time and angle of arrival data at 7 GHz. Data processing methods are outlined, and results obtained from data taken in two different buildings are presented. Based on the …

Alternate Path Routing For Multicast, Daniel Zappala Mar 2000

Alternate Path Routing For Multicast, Daniel Zappala

Faculty Publications

Alternate path routing has been well-explored in telecommunication networks as a means of decreasing the call blocking rate and increasing network utility. However, aside from some work applying these concepts to unicast flows, alternate path routing has received little attention in the Internet community. We describe and evaluate an architecture for alternate path routing for multicast flows. For path installation, we design a receiver-oriented alternate path protocol and prove that it reconfigures multicast trees without introducing loops. For path computation, we propose a scalable local search heuristic that allows receivers to find alternate paths using only partial network information. We …

Initial Negotiations, Donald Tritt, Erdmann Schmocker, Leo Schelbert, R. Steven Wisdom, Kent Anderson

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Initiation of a Potential SAHS Swiss American Center (SAC) Project: From the Minutes of the SAHS Annual Meeting, held on October 10, 1998 at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D. C., Dr. Sabine. Jessner, Secretary: "Donald Tritt asked the members to consider the creation of a Swiss American Center to preserve and foster Swiss-American culture. He had literature on ethnic centers created by Americans of Danish, Norwegian, Irish, and other ethnic backgrounds. A Swiss Center might include museum exhibition space, meeting facilities, a library, and an archive. Discussion followed. This possibility met with enthusiastic response. Among those speaking in …

The Separation, Erdmann Schmocker, Leo Schelbert, Donald Tritt

Swiss American Historical Society Review

This is in response to your message dated 8-20-99 and faxed 8-26-99. After much thought and discussion we have come to the conclusion that a further involvement of the SAHS in the planning of a Swiss American Center to be located in New Glarus has to be suspended to enable the SAHS President to consult by mail the members of the SAHS Board of Advisors as well as the SAHS membership in order to reach a decision whether the SAHS can be a partner in that project as now pursued. The extensive discussions of the past months and especially also …

The members of the Board are to take necessary steps such as initiating fund-raising, establishing the Foundation, creating an Advisory Board, and working out by-laws in close cooperation with their respective constituencies, …

Numerical Aspects Of Discrete And Continuum Hybrid Models In Cell Biology, J. C. Dallon Feb 2000

Numerical Aspects Of Discrete And Continuum Hybrid Models In Cell Biology, J. C. Dallon

Faculty Publications

In this paper we introduce a method of modeling which mixes continuum and discrete variables, and explain two models in cell biology that use this method. The first application deals with wound healing, more specifically the collagen alignment in scar tissue formation and the second models early aggregation in the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum. We solve these models using numerical techniques similar to the particle-in-cell method which requires that the discrete and continuum variables are interpolated one to the other. The implementational and numerical details are discussed in an informal and practical manner with particular attention given to the …

Out Of The Dust, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

This article details three topics. First, Oliver Huntington was an early LDS pioneer who wrote or dictated numerous reminiscences, including on his association with Joseph Smith. On 16 February 1895, he wrote the names of the three Nephites who “do not sleep.” Historians find that some of what he recorded does not square with other reports. Without corroborating statements from other sources, we cannot know if he is correct. Second, Monument 6 near Palenque, Mexico, prophesies the descent of the god Bolon Yokte K’u. This monument allows confidence that the practice of prophesying future happenings was going on within a …

Recent genetic studies indicate that Polynesians were connected to ancient America. Careful reading of native sources led European scholar Michel Graulich to conclude that pre-Columbian Americans held beliefs that may arise out of the Christian tradition. Whether he or those he opposes are correct, the caution to allow more than one interpretative stance remains appropriate. Interpretations of scriptural history are possibly “contingent upon the theoretical inclinations” of the investigators. The historical process of the Anufo people of the Ivory Coast territory suggests how “robbers” or “secret societies” could have grown to be players on the sociopolitical scene in Mesoamerica.
