Image Reconstruction And Enhanced Resolution Imaging From Irregular Samples, David G. Long, David S. Early Feb 2001

Image Reconstruction And Enhanced Resolution Imaging From Irregular Samples, David G. Long, David S. Early

Faculty Publications

While high resolution, regularly gridded observations are generally preferred in remote sensing, actual observations are often not evenly sampled and have lower-than-desired resolution. Hence, there is an interest in resolution enhancement and image reconstruction. This paper discusses a general theory and techniques for image reconstruction and creating enhanced resolution images from irregularly sampled data. Using irregular sampling theory, we consider how the frequency content in aperture function-attenuated sidelobes can be recovered from oversampled data using reconstruction techniques, thus taking advantage of the high frequency content of measurements made with nonideal aperture filters. We show that with minor modification, the algebraic …

Language Acquisition In Children With Autism, Tina Taylor Feb 2001

Language Acquisition In Children With Autism, Tina Taylor

Faculty Publications

By definition, children with autism have deficits in communication. Often, when parents notice that something is "different" about their child, it is that he does not acquire language at the same rate as his peers, that the child uses what language he has in an idiosyncratic fashion (e.g., repeating phrases from videos, using pronouns incorrectly), or that the child appears to understand only that language which might be reinforcing to him (e.g., not responding to "Look at Mommy," but responding to "Do you want a cookie?)" When these "red flags" are apparent, parents should beware of misguided advice such as …

Evidence suggests that ancient Mesoamericans may have had horses. Excavations have produced horse bones that archaeologists believe date to before the Spanish Conquest. The article also mentions an artifact found in Bolivia that may have characters in a Semitic script. Locals have asked for assistance in examining the piece, but it is not yet clear whether it is relevant to the Book of Mormon.

Relationships Between Centaurea Maculosa And Indigenous Plant Assemblages, Susan A. Kedzie-Webb, Roger L. Sheley, John J. Borkowski, James S. Jacobs Jan 2001

Relationships Between Centaurea Maculosa And Indigenous Plant Assemblages, Susan A. Kedzie-Webb, Roger L. Sheley, John J. Borkowski, James S. Jacobs

Western North American Naturalist

Ecological impacts of invasive plants include displacement of indigenous species and declines in species richness and diversity. The objective of this study was to characterize the functional relationship between plant community composition and Centaurea maculosa Lam. (spotted knapweed) within a Festuca idahoensis / Pseudoroegneria spicatum habitat type in Montana. Density, cover, and biomass of all species were collected along a gradient of spotted knapweed cover ranging from 0% to about 100%. Step-down regression was used to determine the relationship among C. maculosa, indigenous species, species richness, and Shannon-Weavers diversity index. Regressions showed that indigenous perennial grass cover, species richness, …

Post-Breeding Season Movements Of Columbia Spotted Frogs (Rana Luteiventris) In Northeastern Oregon, Evelyn L. Bull, Marc P. Hayes Jan 2001

Post-Breeding Season Movements Of Columbia Spotted Frogs (Rana Luteiventris) In Northeastern Oregon, Evelyn L. Bull, Marc P. Hayes

Western North American Naturalist

Movements of Columbia spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris) were determined after breeding to provide managers with information on habitat requirements. We radio-tagged 47 adults and observed movements occurring with 22 frogs. Eleven frogs remained in breeding ponds, and 11 moved to other ponds or river stretches during spring and summer 1998. Distances frogs traveled to other water bodies ranged from 15 to 560 m. Movements appeared to be influenced by availability of habitat and aquatic conditions. Eleven of 16 frogs located within 100 m of other permanent water sources moved, while no frogs at an isolated breeding pond moved. …

Taking The Scenic Route: From Denmark To America Via Australia, Borge M. Christensen Jan 2001

Taking The Scenic Route: From Denmark To America Via Australia, Borge M. Christensen

The Bridge

From Copenhagen across the Atlantic to America, occasionally via Germany or England, Danish emigrants usually followed the most direct route. The Atlantic is the ocean in the Danish Immigrant Museum's trademark "Across Oceans, Across Time." A few found their way to the New World via South America. But the young cabinetmaker in this story went the other way around. He circumnavigated the globe and stopped a few years in Australia before he finally settled in America.

Spatial Evaluation Of Feedlot Runoff And Fehyd Computer Program Jan 2001

Spatial Evaluation Of Feedlot Runoff And Fehyd Computer Program

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

In this study 6 feedlots that are located on a watershed in North Dakota are evaluated considering the State Laws and literature with respect to their potential to cause water pollution. In the evaluation ArcView GIS software is used. Feedlots are evaluated considering the distance to surface water and aquifers, soil type, and slope-aspect criteria. The results found that all six feedlots evaluated needed runoff control facilities in order to meet all State Laws and/or literature criteria.

Metacognitive Expressions In La Respuesta A Sor Filotea, A Seventeenth-Century Text By Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Alfredo Urzúa B. Jan 2001

Metacognitive Expressions In La Respuesta A Sor Filotea, A Seventeenth-Century Text By Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Alfredo Urzúa B.

Quidditas

In the Respuesta de la poetisa a la muy ilustre Sor Filotea de la Cruz, her famous letter/treatise, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648/51–1695) eloquently defends her right to study, learn, write poetry, and pursue academic matters. In this document, Sor Juana repeatedly refers to her intellectual activities as arising from an innate desire in her. This “desire to know,” that she “knows not whether to take as a Heaven-sent favor or as a punishment,” was indeed a recurrent theme in her mental explorations. Sor Juana’s Respuesta a Sor Filotea constitutes an extraordinary example of an early essay-like …

The Power Of Suggestion: Inertia In 401k Participation And Savings Behavior, Brigitte C. Madrian, Dennis F. Shea Jan 2001

The Power Of Suggestion: Inertia In 401k Participation And Savings Behavior, Brigitte C. Madrian, Dennis F. Shea

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we analyze the 401(k) savings behavior of employees in a large U.S. corporation before and after an interesting change in the company 401(k) plan. Before the plan change, employees were required to affirmatively elect participation in the 401(k) plan. After the plan change, employees were automatically and immediately enrolled in the 401(k) plan unless they made a negative election to opt out of the plan. Although none of the economic features of the plan changed, this switch to automatic enrollment dramatically changed the savings behavior of employees. We have two key findings. First, 401(k) participation is significantly …

Russia's Other "Mormons": Their Origins And Relationship To The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Eric A. Eliason, Gary Browning Jan 2001

Russia's Other "Mormons": Their Origins And Relationship To The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Eric A. Eliason, Gary Browning

BYU Studies

When Mormon missionaries entered Russia in 1990, they were astonished to hear about "Mormon" settlements already existing in the Samara region. Other evidence of Mormonism appeared: for example, locals used the term "Mormon crosses" to describe a unique style of crucifixes in cemeteries. In this article, the authors delve into the questions of whether or not sects with ties to mainstream Mormonism existed in pre-perestroika Russia or if unrelated groups earned the nickname "Mormon" for living in unusual family arrangements, similar to polygamy. Using data gathered from Latter-day Saint missionaries who served in Russia in the late 1990s as a …
