International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this work, the goals of the ongoing research project “Development of an Intelligent Data Analysis System for Knowledge Management in Environmental Data Bases” are presented. This project started in 2000, and the Spanish Government will finance it until 2003. Its main goal is to design and develop a prototype of a tool for intelligent data analysis and implicit knowledge management of databases, with special focus on environmental databases. It is remarkable the high quantity of information and knowledge patterns implicit in large databases coming from the monitoring of any system or dynamical environmental process. For instance, historical data collected …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

More than 250 submerged archaeological sites were identified in the Lagoon of Venice, which account for an historic and artistic heritage of extraordinary value. These sites are endangered by several environmental and human factors: erosion, chemical pollution, organisms (mainly wood borers), motor-boat traffic, fishery activities, and robbers. A Decision Support System (DSS), named ArcheoRisk, was developed to include the safeguarding of archaeological sites within the environmental management of the Venice lagoon and to select most effective safeguarding/rehabilitation interventions, whenever needed. The DSS relies on a Geographical Information System platform (Arcview) and is composed of two modules: (1) assessment of archaeological …

Experiences In An Integrated Assessment Of Water Allocation Issues In The Namoi River Catchment, Australia, R. A. Letcher, A. J. Jakeman Jul 2002

Experiences In An Integrated Assessment Of Water Allocation Issues In The Namoi River Catchment, Australia, R. A. Letcher, A. J. Jakeman

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Namoi river catchment in northern NSW is an important irrigation region. However water resources in this region are increasingly stressed. Both surface and groundwater supplies are overallocated in many areas of the catchment. Management options to reduce allocations in line with available supply and environmental requirements are expected to have long term social, economic and environmental implications. This paper looks at an integrated assessment model which has been developed to assess long term outcomes of management options for water allocation in the catchment. The development of this tool has been undertaken using an iterative approach with key stakeholders. Feedback …

“Behold The Condescension Of God” A Scriptural Perspective On Three Nativity Scenes, Doris R. Dant, Richard G. Oman Jul 2002

“Behold The Condescension Of God” A Scriptural Perspective On Three Nativity Scenes, Doris R. Dant, Richard G. Oman

BYU Studies

In the midst of the Christmas season's commercialization, frenzied preparations, and parties, families worldwide set aside time to arrange a nativity scene on a mantelpiece or table. More than any other traditional Christmas object, these nativity sets bid us heed the message of Christ's birth. What the nativities specifically say differs with the endless variations played out by their creators and those who arrange the scenes, but certain scriptural themes are common. To show how some of these themes are presented by nativity scenes, this article will analyze three world-class nativities created by Latter-day Saint Gerd Sjökvist, Harrison Begay Jr., …

Model Coupling And Integration Via Xml In Them3 Simulation, Andreas Hoheisel

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Complex real-world systems are currently developing into a decisive instrument for IT-supported problem solving for a great number of problems posed by science, economy and society. Like in many environmental simulation systems the Man Model Measurement (M3) Simulation (http://mmm.first.fraunhofer.de) contains numerous single scientifically founded models coupled to each other to reflect the complexity of our world. The unpredictable human factor is considered by actively involving real people into the simulation by a Virtual Reality framework. The evolution and enhancement of the M3 system will be provided by an open software API. This paper will focus on the control and the …

A Decision Support Gis For The Clean Water Act Permit Review Analysis, Wei (Wayne) Ji, Rima A. Wahab, Jia (Jane) Ma Jul 2002

A Decision Support Gis For The Clean Water Act Permit Review Analysis, Wei (Wayne) Ji, Rima A. Wahab, Jia (Jane) Ma

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Section 404 of the Clean Water Act is the primary federal statute of the United States that regulates the discharge of dredged or fill materials into lakes, rivers, and wetlands. The Section 404 permit review process involves comprehensive assessments of physical, biological, ecological, and socioeconomic impacts of potential human alterations on aquatic ecosystems across spatial scales. Such assessments require the integration of management decision-making with innovative data handling techniques and assessment methodology. The Section 404-permit process is often hindered by the lack of well-developed scientific information and the technical tools for efficient data analysis. The individual permit review frequently becomes …

Agent-Based And Integrated Assessment Modelling For Incorporating Social Dynamics In The Management Of The Meuse In The Dutch Province Of Limburg, Jorg Krywkow, Pieter Valkering, Jan Rotmans, Anne Van Der Veen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The European project FIRMA (Freshwater Integrated Resource Management with Agents) aims to improve water resource planning by combining agent-based modelling and integrated assessment to describe physical, hydrological, social and economic aspects of water resource management in an integrated way. This paper describes an approach that couples an agent-based model with an integrated assessment model as a conceptual framework. The aspired outcome of the model is to highlight the consequences of agent activities on each other as well as on the environment. The aim is to provide a DSS for decision makers in a water management situation. The case study presented …

Catchment Modelling – A Resource Manager’S Perspective, J.E. Caminiti Jul 2002

Catchment Modelling – A Resource Manager’S Perspective, J.E. Caminiti

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Models are invaluable tools for resource management. Models help resource managers develop a shared conceptual understanding of complex natural systems, allow testing of management scenarios, predict outcomes of high risk and high cost environmental manipulations, and set priorities. Catchment modelling is a specialist field, and different modelling approaches are specialist areas in themselves. There are a plethora of models available that apply to integrated catchment management, from micro to landscape scales, from deterministic models to broad-brush models. Different philosophies abound; with some experts advocating top-down systems approaches and others who dismiss these as being too uncertain and based on opinion …

A Regional Water Quality Model Designed For A Range Of Users And For Retrofit And Re-Use, R. A. Vertessy, J. M. Rahman, F. G. R. Watson, R. M. Argent, S. M. Cuddy, S. P. Seaton Jul 2002

A Regional Water Quality Model Designed For A Range Of Users And For Retrofit And Re-Use, R. A. Vertessy, J. M. Rahman, F. G. R. Watson, R. M. Argent, S. M. Cuddy, S. P. Seaton

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We discuss the motivations for, and software design concepts underpinning, the development of a regional water quality model. The Environmental Management Support System (EMSS) was developed to predict daily fluxes of runoff, total suspended sediment, total nitrogen and total phosphorous through a large-scale river network. It was built using a custom environmental modelling framework called Tarsier, founded on the Borland C++ Builder rapid application development environment. Three autonomous models are integrated within the EMSS, but are loosely coupled so that alternative models could be retrofitted into the system if desired. The three models share common data handling and visualisation routines …

Designing A Multi-Agent System For Integrated Protection In Agriculture, A. Perini, A. Susi Jul 2002

Designing A Multi-Agent System For Integrated Protection In Agriculture, A. Perini, A. Susi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Integrated Protection (IP) in agriculture consists of a set of practices aimed at favoring the set upof a development model characterized by a reduced environmental impact. The application of IP practicesin plant disease management by growers and agronomists requires both specialistic skills, historical data andinformation on chemicals and on low impact techniques for pest management. These sources of informationand knowledge are distributed among different actors in the agriculture production system.Recent approaches in developing decision support systems for agriculture, and more generally for environmentalproblems management, tend to adopt a “systemic” approach. That is to say a problem is considered for itsdependencies …

Classifying Environmental System Situations By Means Of Case-Based Reasoning: A Comparative Study, Héctor Núñez, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Ulises Cortés, Quim Comas, Montse Martínez, Manel Poch Jul 2002

Classifying Environmental System Situations By Means Of Case-Based Reasoning: A Comparative Study, Héctor Núñez, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Ulises Cortés, Quim Comas, Montse Martínez, Manel Poch

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The step of identifying to which class of operational situation belongs the current Environmental System situation is a key element to build successful Environmental Decision Support Systems (EDSS). Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is a good technique to solve new problems based in previous experience. Main assumption in CBR relies in the hypothesis that similar problems should have similar solutions. When working with labelled cases, the retrieval step in CBR cycle can be seen as a classification task. The new cases will be labelled (classified) with the label (class) of the most similar case retrieved from the Case Base. In Environmental Systems, …

The Streames Project: Linking Heuristic And Empirical Knowledge Into An Expert System To Assess Stream Managers, Joaquim Comas, Esther Llorens, Manel Poch, G. Markakis, T. Battin, S. Gafny, E. Maneux, E. Martí, M. Morais, M. A. Puig, M. Pusch, J. L. Riera, F. Sabater, A. G. Solimini, P. Vervier

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The increase in stream nutrient loads from anthropogenic sources has become a serious problem, especially in developed regions. Humans affect streams by modifying the landscape in ways that increase the transport of nutrients to surface waters, by directly dumping urban or industrial sewage into the stream, or by modifying streams in ways that reduce their ability to respond to increased nutrient loads. In Mediterranean regions these problems are compounded by the scarcity of water. The decision-making processes involved in water quality management require extensive human expertise or extensive computation with large data sets. In this sense, the STREAMES project aims …

Environmental Foresight And Structural Change, M. B. Beck Jul 2002

Environmental Foresight And Structural Change, M. B. Beck

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Policy-makers and the public, it has famously been said [Brooks, 1986], are more interested in the possibility of non-linear dislocations and surprises in the behavior of the environment than in smooth extrapolations of current trends. How indeed should we design our models to generate environmental foresight, to detect, in particular, threats to our environment lying “just beyond the horizon”? In facing this prospect of potentially profound dislocations in behavior, the problem is that the number of state variables in the model, whether they interact, how they interact, and the form of their interactions, may be evolving over time. What may …

Immersive, Interactive Exploration Of Changing Landscapes, Christian Stock, I. D. Bishop Jul 2002

Immersive, Interactive Exploration Of Changing Landscapes, Christian Stock, I. D. Bishop

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

It is expected that the structure of rural communities and the visual landscape of the Cudgewa Valley in northeastern Victoria, Australia, will change markedly within the next 20 years. We are creating a portable environment for landscape simulation, using geographic information systems and virtual reality technology. This will allow the community and stakeholders of this valley to propose alternative land cover configurations, move through realistic renderings of the consequent landscape, and review outcomes on a variety of environmental, economic and social scales. A detailed three dimensional visual model of the region will be rendered using OpenGL Performer. People will also …

An Architecture For Modelling Individual Behaviour And Landscape Scale Outcomes In An Intelligent Agent-Based Simulation Of Environmental Management, L. J. Smith, R. Itami, I. D. Bishop Jul 2002

An Architecture For Modelling Individual Behaviour And Landscape Scale Outcomes In An Intelligent Agent-Based Simulation Of Environmental Management, L. J. Smith, R. Itami, I. D. Bishop

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This work describes a software architecture that couples intelligent agent technology with Geographic Information System (GIS). The agents simulate individual behaviour, while GIS-based simulation models represent the landscape that is observed and acted upon by the agents. Our motivation in developing the software is to assist in understanding and resolving complex, semistructured, environmental management problems, where multiple actors participate in decision-making and management. Like real stakeholders, agents are individuals and have different knowledge and interests. The agents’ design is based upon the Belief, Desire, and Intention (BDI) theory of intelligent agents and implemented in Visual Basic. Agents are initialised with …

Continuous Contaminated Site Monitoring (Ccs M) Integrated Remote Real-Time Supervision For An Old Coking-P Lant, Frédéric Portet, Konrad Szafnicki, Jacques Bourgois, Véronique Milon Jul 2002

Continuous Contaminated Site Monitoring (Ccs M) Integrated Remote Real-Time Supervision For An Old Coking-P Lant, Frédéric Portet, Konrad Szafnicki, Jacques Bourgois, Véronique Milon

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The purpose of the Continuous Contaminated Site Monitoring (CCSM) is to develop a real time management methodology for PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) contaminated aquifer resulting from coal activity. For full-scale experimentation, since June 2000 an old coking plant site has been instrumented (sensors, analysers, datalogger, programmable logic controller, etc….). Its follow-up currently continues with remote supervision, via telecom connection. The Contaminated Sites Monitoring is a necessity to control the evolution of pollution and therefore the risk to human health or environment. With aromatic hydrocarbons contamination, one is generally satisfied with selective investigation, in fact incomplete and non-representative of the reality. …

Simulation Of Pesticide Percolation In The Soil Based On Cellular Automata, Stefania Bandini, Giulio Pavesi Jul 2002

Simulation Of Pesticide Percolation In The Soil Based On Cellular Automata, Stefania Bandini, Giulio Pavesi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the last decades, the use of pesticides has increased exponentially agricultural production. However,it is a well known fact that excessive use of pesticides can be hazardous both for the environment andhuman health. It is thus essential to assess thoroughly the impact on the environment of a given pesticide beforeits application. When they are sprayed on crops, pesticides are absorbed by the soil. Then, when waterflows through the soil because of rain or floods, chemical substances can be released into it. The amount ofpesticide released into water mainly depends on the chemical properties of the pesticide itself and the physicaland …

Trees, Dendrograms And Sensitivity, R. D. Braddock Jul 2002

Trees, Dendrograms And Sensitivity, R. D. Braddock

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Dendrograms and minimum-weight spanning trees (MWST) are discrete structures which arise inclustering theory, networks, and where strategic choices are made between discrete options. The discrete structureof the solution tree varies discontinuously with respect to changes in the dissimilarity or cost matrix. Tarjan[1982] has obtained bounds on the changes to the elements of the cost matrix, where the structure is not altered. These results are extended to describe the sensitivity of the tree structure with respect to changes in the costmatrix. The sensitivity of the structure to the addition of a node and arcs is solved using potential loops in thetree. This …

A Spatially Explicit Modelling Approach To Socioeconomic Development In South Africa, L. Erasmus, A. S. Van Jaarsveld, P. O. Bommel Jul 2002

A Spatially Explicit Modelling Approach To Socioeconomic Development In South Africa, L. Erasmus, A. S. Van Jaarsveld, P. O. Bommel

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

South Africa finds itself at a development cross road: optimism for "high road" development is bisected by a wasteland of poverty and overpopulation. Intervention policies are largely "faith-based", even in the face of rising uncertainties surrounding population growth, HIV/Aids and resource availability. Added to this are the complexities of disparate spatial development and social scenarios, mass urbanization and immigration. In order to confront these threats, decision makers need analytical tools that can be used to explore potential intervention policies for their efficacy, desirability and inadvertent consequences in nontarget sectors. Such tools should adequately address uneven spatial development across environmental, economic …

Data Assimilation And Uncertainty Analysis Of Environmental Assessment Problems, Renata J. Romanowicz, Peter C. Young Jul 2002

Data Assimilation And Uncertainty Analysis Of Environmental Assessment Problems, Renata J. Romanowicz, Peter C. Young

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Stochastic Transfer Function (STF) and Generalised Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) techniques are outlined and applied to an environmental problem concerned with marine pollution dose assessment. The methods are used to estimate the amount and associated probability distributions of radionuclides transferred to marine biota from a given source: the British Nuclear Fuel Ltd (BNFL) repository plant in Sellafield, U.K. The complexity of the processes involved, together with the large dispersion and scarcity of observations regarding radionuclide concentrations in the marine environment, require efficient data assimilation techniques. In this regard, the basic STF methodology searches for identifiable, linear, Gaussian model structures that …

Making Frameworks More Useable: Using Model Introspection And Metadata To Develop Model Processing Tools, J. M. Rahman, S. P. Seaton, S. M. Cuddy Jul 2002

Making Frameworks More Useable: Using Model Introspection And Metadata To Develop Model Processing Tools, J. M. Rahman, S. P. Seaton, S. M. Cuddy

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Several modern development environments allow executable components, such as hydrologic models, to carry Metadata describing the properties and capabilities of the components. These metadata may be restricted to the names of properties, and their respective data types, or may extend to other information, such as classification of properties (eg. input or output), numeric constraints on parameters (eg. between 0 and 1, or greater than 0) or aliases (eg. rainfall, also known as precipitation). Introspection in these environments allows tool developers to write programs and other components that make use of these metadata to provide generic model processing tools, while allowing …

Multi-Criteria Decision Support System And Data Warehouse For Designing And Monitoring Sustainable Industrial Strategies An Italian Case Study, C. Di Mauro, J. P. Nordvik, A. C. Lucia Jul 2002

Multi-Criteria Decision Support System And Data Warehouse For Designing And Monitoring Sustainable Industrial Strategies An Italian Case Study, C. Di Mauro, J. P. Nordvik, A. C. Lucia

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Decision-making processes for managing and defining policies related to social and environmental impacts from industry are becoming more and more complex. Raising public concerns on environmental issues requires public authorities to collect more accurate information related to impacts of industry. Overlaps between environmental, social and political interests, and rapid speed of change contribute even further to the complexity. Unfortunately, this multifaceted information is spread throughout multiple repositories. Thus, there is a need to integrate the available information within a structured network and to design a decision support system suitable for helping decision makers to define sustainable policies. This paper reports …

Nano-Technology Patenting In The Usa, Dora Marinova, Michael Mcaleer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In January 2002, the Australian Research Council categorised research related to nano-materialsand bio-materials as one of its four priority funding areas. Such projects are considered to be of paramountimportance because of the recognised potential of these technologies to improve product efficiency, conserve natural resources and help alleviate environmental problems. This paper uses a TechnologicalStrengths (TS) model based on patent statistics to: (1) analyse trends in the patenting of nano-technologiesin the USA, using data from 1975 to 2000 for patents lodged at the US Patent and Trademark Office; and(2) examine Australia’s contribution to the development of these technologies. The four elements of …

Multi-Model Integration In Decision Support System: A Technical User Interface Approach For Watershed And Lake Management Scenarios, David Lam, Luis F. León, Stuart Hamilton, Norm Crookshank, Derek Bonin, David Swayne Jul 2002

Multi-Model Integration In Decision Support System: A Technical User Interface Approach For Watershed And Lake Management Scenarios, David Lam, Luis F. León, Stuart Hamilton, Norm Crookshank, Derek Bonin, David Swayne

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Computer simulations using mathematical models provide useful tools to investigate different scenarios based on watershed management strategies and environmental conditions. To study the impact of these strategies and conditions, different models must be linked or coupled following hydrological pathways in air, soil and water. To connect one model to another successfully, we need to resolve a number of computational issues such as the compatibility of software tools and the consistency of the temporal and spatial scales and model assumptions used. To keep track of these issues and to provide efficient algorithms to resolve them, we propose to use a technical …

Modeling And Analysis Of Biofilms Formation And Evolution In Wastewater Treatment Processes Using Multi-Agent Systems, Laurent Lardon, Jean-Philippe Steyer, Nicolas Bernet, Christophe Le Page Jul 2002

Modeling And Analysis Of Biofilms Formation And Evolution In Wastewater Treatment Processes Using Multi-Agent Systems, Laurent Lardon, Jean-Philippe Steyer, Nicolas Bernet, Christophe Le Page

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Biofilms are complex but omnipresent and industrially important structures. Many studies were devoted to build mathematical models for biofilm analysis but most of them were based on classical continuous approaches. On the other side, only very few studies were directly based on the functional mechanisms to obtain virtual systems which mimic the descriptive observations and allow to predict the state of a biofilm and its possible evolution. This paper will present a non-classical approach based on multi-agent systems for the analysis of biofilm formation. This model shows the spatial repartition of biomass within the biofilm and the impact of the …

Combining Object-Oriented Programming And Relational Databases For Multi-Scale Spatially- Integrated Agent-Based Models, J.G Polhill|A, Nick Gotts, Alistair N. R. Law Jul 2002

Combining Object-Oriented Programming And Relational Databases For Multi-Scale Spatially- Integrated Agent-Based Models, J.G Polhill|A, Nick Gotts, Alistair N. R. Law

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Object-oriented (OO) programming has limitations when used to implement abstract multi-scale, spatially-integrated, agent-based models, that could potentially be addressed using relational databases (RDB). Although this would involve rethinking the approach to designing such models, the combined OORDB approach has a number of appealing advantages for multi-scale simulations, such as allowing the user rather than the programmer to specify the scale at which various land-use processes take place. It also provides a basis for a more realistic representation of the relationship between agents and their environment

Emissions Trading Experiments: Investment Uncertainty And Liability, Takao Kusakawa, Tatsuyoshi Saijo Jul 2002

Emissions Trading Experiments: Investment Uncertainty And Liability, Takao Kusakawa, Tatsuyoshi Saijo

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We conducted three experiments on emissions trading. In experiment 1, we found very high efficiency under no investment uncertainty. In experiment 2, we introduced irreversibility of investment and investment time lag. Under these conditions, we found two cases: the success case and the failure case. Then we introduced three liability rules: seller's liability, Kyoto-first liability, and country-first liability. We found a new case called the theoretical price increase case under country-first, and the intentional bankruptcy case under Kyoto-first.

The Role Playing Games In An Abm Participatory Modeling Process: Outcomes From Five Different Experiments Carried Out In The Last Five Years, Patrick D’Aquino, Olivier Barreteau, Michel Etienne, Stanislas Boissau, Sigrid Aubert

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Since 1996, we have used Role Playing Games (RPG) with our Multi-Agent System (MAS) platform, CORMAS (Bousquet et al. 1998), in different experiments about local land use management, water management, negotiations between foresters and breeders, and preservation of wild genetic resources by local peasants. Each experiment tested a different sort of coupling between RPG and CORMAS, from a RPG simply explaining the MAS model to a RPG strongly evolving in the different steps of the modeling itself. Each experiment tested also different objectives for this linking, from the improvement of the modeler's knowledge about the issue to the support of …

Some Novel Information Systems For The Empowerment Of A Decision-Making Process On A Territory: Outcomes From A Four Years Participatory Modeling In Senegal, Patrick D’Aquino

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Maps, the Geographical Information Systems (GIS), the Role-Playing Games (RPG) and the other participatory supports, the Multi-agent Systems (MAS): all are modeling supports designed through their conceivers' perception. Even in participatory approaches, these designing and modeling can take off towards technocratic, but often unconscious, drifts. Yet, a true empowerment of local governance means to let stakeholders and their principals totally handle their information and modeling systems. The mere access to information is certainly a first step but it is far from a true power over it, so long as this local people are not able to select, process and …
