Environmental Interaction In Summer Algal Communities Of Utah Lake, Mark C. Whiting, Jack D. Brotherson, Samuel R. Rushforth
Environmental Interaction In Summer Algal Communities Of Utah Lake, Mark C. Whiting, Jack D. Brotherson, Samuel R. Rushforth
Great Basin Naturalist
Utah Lake is a shallow eutrophic lake in central Utah. It is characterized by high nutrient and silt loads and by large algal blooms in late summer and early fall. Phytoplankton samples and environmental data were taken from June through August 1974. Phytoplankton species were identified and then quantified in a Palmer counting cell. Environmental continuum theory was employed to describe algal succession, and regression analysis was used to discover interactions between algal communities and the environment. Phytoplankton communities in June were characterized by high species diversity. As the lake environment became stressed in late summer due to higher turbidity, …

Algal Response To A Thermal Effluent : Study Of A Power Station On The Provo River, Utah, Usa, Lorin E. Squires
Algal Response To A Thermal Effluent : Study Of A Power Station On The Provo River, Utah, Usa, Lorin E. Squires
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of a thermal effluent on the attached algae of the Provo River, Utah, USA, was studied from 1975 to 1977. Data for macroscopic and microscopic algae were collected and analyzed. Diatoms, Cladophora glomerata, and Hydrurus foetidus dominated the flora. The thermal effluent significantly affected the algal flora in a section of river 100 to 135 meters long immediately below the discharge point. Cladophora growth was increased and Hydrurus was absent in this area. In addition, diatom production was often higher and diversity lower than in the rest of the river. Community structure was unique from all other adjacent …

The Algal Flora Of The Campus Of Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, Cheng Mou-Sheng, Samuel R. Rushforth
Great Basin Naturalist
The algal flora of the Brigham Young University campus is more diverse than previously thought. Sixty-eight genera containing 160 species of Chlorophyta, Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta, and Cyanophyta were collected and identified. The greatest number of species was obtained from a small pond in the arboretum, with progressively fewer species obtained in the irrigation canal partly surrounding the campus and in specialized habitats in the greenhouses.

Biological Studies On Cryptobia Atraria Sp.N. (Kinetoplastida: Cryptobiidae) In Fishes From The Sevier River Drainage, Utah, J. Stephen Cranney
Theses and Dissertations
Fish culture for both food and sport utilization has been greatly increasing throughout the world. The editor of Fish Farming Industries (1973) predicted an increase by 1977 in the United States of 83% for catfish producers, 49% for trout farmers, and 91% for bait dealers. Concomitant with the renewed interest in fish culture has been a corresponding need to further understand fish diseases.
High School Students Achievement Of College Level Work Through The Phase Achievement System (Pas), Dwight D. Lassen
High School Students Achievement Of College Level Work Through The Phase Achievement System (Pas), Dwight D. Lassen
Theses and Dissertations
Senior high school students in a Human Biology course were given college level work through the Phase Achievement System (PAS), a biology course at Brigham Young University (BYU). Statistical analysis showed significant growth in high school student learning through the PAS. When ability to work with PAS was measured, significant differences between the high school and college groups were not evident. A high percentage of college and high school students dropped out of the PAS, probably becasue students could fail at the PAS without experiencing academic failure.

The Biology And Food Habits Of Typhlodromus Mcgregori Chant (Acarina: Phytoseiidae), Brian A. Croft
Theses and Dissertations
Phytoseiid mites were first studied from an economic standpoint by Parrott et al. (1906), who described the value of Seius pomi Koch in controlling the pear leaf blister mite Eriophyes pyri (Pgst.). The taxonomic and biological studies of Garman (1948), Nesbitt (1951), and Chant ( 1959) stimulated additional interest in phytoseiids as predators, and in recent years they have been studied rather extensively as biological control agents of phytophagous mites.
