Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin
Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin
Theses and Dissertations
Recently the need for a more clearly defined structural basis for American local history has become acute. Concepts used in national history often fall short of the needs of local history. As a result, both professionals and amateurs are producing a rash of community histories without the benefit of adequate guidelines.
This thesis draws together a number of concepts useful in the development of American local history as a viable academic field of study. It tests these concepts in presenting the history of community in Winder, a small, rural population set in southeastern Idaho.
Medieval Studies In America And American Medievalism, Herwig Wolfram
Medieval Studies In America And American Medievalism, Herwig Wolfram
Quidditas
As far as one can tell, Ernst Robert Curtius appears to have been the first Central European so fascinated by American interest in the Middle Ages that he promised a study on the subject. He called this particular interplay oof academic, amateur, and popular interest "American Medievalism." According to his bibliography, the projected work never appeared, but a lecture he was asked to present to an American audience in 1949 was published in both the North American and Hispano-American editions of his famous book European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages.
Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry
Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry
Theses and Dissertations
"The Witness" can be viewed as Clinton F. Larson's poetic manifesto that points the direction for much of his subsequent work. Although his poetic "mormonism" has been questioned by several of his critics, this thesis shows that Larson definitely expresses his Mormon faith in "The Witness" as a metaphorical quest for mythic consciousness. While searching in the poem for sacred space and time, Larson seeks to become closer to the divine and powerful center of being, creating at once a metaphor for his quest to understand and assimilate Christ's atonement and a poetic voice from which he can speak for …

Purrysburg, An Archaeological Survey, Larry Lepionka
Purrysburg, An Archaeological Survey, Larry Lepionka
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
An archaeological reconnaissance of the colonial site of Purrysburg, on the Savannah River in Jasper County, South Carolina, has been conducted intermittently through the year 1979, with the goal of locating structural or other artifactual remains of the original Swiss settlement established here in 1733. Work was restricted to a surface search with only limited subsurface testing. Brick outcroppings occurred at various locations but their date could not be ascertained without extensive excavation. Artifact scatters including datable ceramics were common and suggest a peak in occupation between 1790 and 1820, well after the initial Swiss settlement. Early and middle 18th …

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank
Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank
Theses and Dissertations
In the struggle for self-government which occupied the Mormon population of Utah between their entry into the Great Basin in 1847 and statehood in 1896, the issue of polygamy dominated public discussion. The non-Mormon population of the United States generally objected to the practice of polygamy, in large part because of Victorian attitudes towards sexual activity and the presumed physical and mental results of violating Victorian sexual norms. It was assumed by most Americans that polygamy, by violating those norms, caused real physical damage to the Latter-day Saints in Utah; damage that disqualified them from holding full and equal political …

Ecological And Community Relationships Of Eriogonum Corymbosum (Polygonaceae) In The Uinta Basin, Utah, Jack D. Brotherson, Karen J. Brotherson
Ecological And Community Relationships Of Eriogonum Corymbosum (Polygonaceae) In The Uinta Basin, Utah, Jack D. Brotherson, Karen J. Brotherson
Great Basin Naturalist
Ecological and community relationships of 10 different plant communities in the Uinta Basin, Utah, where Eriogonum corymbosum was found to grow were studied and described. Each community was sampled to determine the amount of ground cover, percent composition, frequency, and density of participating species. Physical site factors, viz., soil texture, total soluble salts, pH, cation exchange capacity, and amounts of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium were determined. The 10 communities were compared to determine the degree of similarity between them. Correlations between individual plant species and measurable characteristics of the community were attempted. Evidence is presented that the distributional patterns …
