Cultural Adjustment Factors Of Senior Missionaries On Assignment In The South Pacific For The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Jonathan W. Shute Jan 2000

Cultural Adjustment Factors Of Senior Missionaries On Assignment In The South Pacific For The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Jonathan W. Shute

Theses and Dissertations

The number of senior missionaries serving missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has increased in recent years. Many of these volunteers travel overseas and are therefore immersed in a different culture. Some of them adjust successfully and others do not. The purpose of this research was to assess senior missionaries' perceptions of the type of preparation they made and training they received before departure, the expectations they had of their assignment, the people and way of life in the islands, and the accuracy of those expectations, the challenges they faced, the factors that they felt helped …

Fronting And Palatalization In Two Dialects Of Shoshoni, Dirk Elzinga Jan 2000

Fronting And Palatalization In Two Dialects Of Shoshoni, Dirk Elzinga

Faculty Publications

In Western Shoshoni, a Uto- Aztecan language spoken in northern Nevada, coronal obstruents are found in distributional patterns which depend on the presence or absence of a preceding front vowel ([i] or [e]). In the pattern I refer to as FRONTING, alveolar stops alternate with dental stops - dental stops occur following front vowels (la), while alveolar stops occur elsewhere (lb); this pattern is common to all dialects:

Representing Culture: Reflexivity And Mormon Folklore Scholarship, David A. Allred Jan 2000

Representing Culture: Reflexivity And Mormon Folklore Scholarship, David A. Allred

Theses and Dissertations

When writing about a culture, ethnographers can convey important insights about society. However, ethnography can also misrepresent culture. To address this fact, reflexive ethnography attempts to influence both the methodology and the rhetoric of writing about culture. Reflexivity seeks to acknowledge the bias of the researcher. To include the voice of the cultural insiders, and to more closely represent the dynamics of cultures that always have an element of hybridity. However, reflexive ethnographies can also be unwieldy and impractical. Therefore, one must find a pragmatic application of reflexivity.

Reflexivity can have application to Mormon folklore studies. The most important Mormon …

Pitirim A. Sorokin On Order, Change And The Reconstruction Of Society: An Integral Perspective, Barry V. Johnston Oct 1999

Pitirim A. Sorokin On Order, Change And The Reconstruction Of Society: An Integral Perspective, Barry V. Johnston

Comparative Civilizations Review

Integration is simultaneously an epistemology, psychology, sociology of change and theory of history. It is the theoretical foundation of Sorokin’s general sociology and later works on the crisis of modernity, altruism and social reconstruction. This paper delineates the evolution of the concept from Social and cultural Dynamics to Sorokin’s work at the Harvard Research Center in Creative Altruism. What results from this chain of historical analysis is an integrated conceptual approach to the nature of humanness, knowledge, conflict resolution, and prosocial forms of human organization. As a result, integralism broadens sociological discourse and yields new insights into social problems and …

Ecological Impacts Of Pogonomyrmex On Woody Vegetation Of A Larrea-Ambrosia Shrubland, Simon A. Lei Jul 1999

Ecological Impacts Of Pogonomyrmex On Woody Vegetation Of A Larrea-Ambrosia Shrubland, Simon A. Lei

Great Basin Naturalist

Plant species richness, density, and frequency were quantitatively examined within Pogonomyrmex rugosus (seed-harvester ant) nest discs and at various distances from nest discs in a Larrea tridentata–Ambrosia dumosa (creosote bush–white bursage) shrubland in southern Nevada. Woody vegetation at and near the edge (perimeter) of nest discs showed decreased species richness, density, and frequency compared with vegetation in adjacent reference areas (nonnest; 4 m beyond discs). Four of 17 species were found with significantly lower density and frequency on nest discs than at greater distances from the nest. Thirteen of 17 species were not found on nest discs at all. Species …
