An Analysis Of Cattle Grazing On Steep Slopes, William Wayne Patton May 1971

An Analysis Of Cattle Grazing On Steep Slopes, William Wayne Patton

Theses and Dissertations

A field study was made to correlate cattle grazing patterns of steep terrain with the rest-rotation grazing system. Line-plot transects were positioned across each of three heavily grazed, steep canyons. The rest-rotation system as practiced on the Gooding Cattle Allotment is resulting in good forage use as the animals are grazing forage on slopes up to 60%. Level contour trails extending across slope faces made it possible for cattle to graze on steep slopes at distances up to 80 chains from water. Contour trails originate at watering loctions; hence better distribution of water could be expected to result in better …

The distribution of the mammals has been correlated with the distribution of the vegetation zones of the mountains which varies with the elevation. The study points out which of the various mammals are found in the various vegetational communities and how the distribution varies from community to community.

The Hyobranchium And Throat Myology Of The Ambystomidae Of The United States, John E. Krogh May 1971

The Hyobranchium And Throat Myology Of The Ambystomidae Of The United States, John E. Krogh

Theses and Dissertations

The 16 species and subspecies of the Ambystomidae of the United States are placed into six groups according to their throat morphology as follows: The Dicamptodon group, the Rhyacotriton group, the A. annulatum-A. cingulatum group, the A. gracile-A. jeffersonianum-A. mabeei-A. macrodactylum-A. maculatum group, the A. talpoideum group, the A. opacum-A. texanum group, and the A. rosaceum-A. t. tigrinum-A. t. melanostictum-A. t. nebulosum group. Dicamptodon appears to be the most primitive group and Rhyacotriton the most specialized. Based on the morphology of the throat region it is suggested that A. rosaceum be placed in the tiger salamander group as a subspecies …

Eutrophication Of Small Lakes, Lynn T. Kenison May 1971

Eutrophication Of Small Lakes, Lynn T. Kenison

Theses and Dissertations

An estimate was made to determine the amount of nitrate and phosphate entering Utah Lake in 1968. To make this estimate, the flow data for 1968 and the nitrate and phosphate concentrations for 1970 were used. This was done because of the lack of information. The results show that the total nitrate added to Utah Lake in 1968 was 7,638,000 pounds. The total phosphate added was 1,740,200 pounds. Of this amount, 12,4 per cent of the nitrate and 18.0 per cent of the phosphate was released from the lake through the Jordan River. The rest remained in the lake to …

An Ecological Life History Of Tall Bluebell In Utah, Verl B. Matthews May 1971

An Ecological Life History Of Tall Bluebell In Utah, Verl B. Matthews

Theses and Dissertations

The ecological life history of tall bluebell, Mertensia arizonica Green var. leonardi (Rydb.) Johnston (M. leonardi Rydb.), was investigated during 1963 and 1964. Summer field studies were conducted on the Mud Creek Sleep Allotment of the Uinta National Forest, Wasatch County, Utah. Laboratory and herbarium studies were carried out at Brigham Young University. Specific objectives were to investigate seed germination, seedling development, root system, phenology, palatability, and describe the physical site factors where bluebell occurred. A study of this species was necessary because much of the herbage produced in certain areas of aspen range is not utilized. This condition occurs …

A Taxonomic Revision Of The Weevil Genus Tychius Germar In America North Of Mexico (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Wayne E. Clark Apr 1971

A Taxonomic Revision Of The Weevil Genus Tychius Germar In America North Of Mexico (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Wayne E. Clark

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

A study of morphological characters of 4,000 adult weevils used in preparing a key and descriptions indicates there are fifteen North American species in the genus Tychius Germar. Adults occur on plants in the genera Astragalus, Baptisia, Hedysarum, Lotus, Lupinus, and Oxytropis.

The genus is divided into two species groups. The T. sordidus group appears to have representatives in the Old World fauna, but the T. semisquamosus group is probably native to North America. New names, Tychius caesius, and T. hirsutus are proposed for T. armatus Green, 1920 (not Tournier, 1873), and T. hirtellus LeConte, 1876 (not Tournier, 1873) respectively. …

Notes On Eriogonum - Vi : A Revision Of The Eriogonum Microthecum Complex (Polygonaceae), James L. Reveal

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

This revision discusses seven closely related species of Eriogonum (Polygonaceae) found in the western United States of North America. One of the two major species, E. microthecum, is composed of nine varieties which range over a wide area of the Far West. The other major species, E. effusum, is found over a more restrictive geographical range mainly east of the Continental Divide. The remaining five species are primarily restricted to the Colorado-Green river drainage basin of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and northern Arizona. Together these entities form the core of a group of plants known as Section Corymbosa. …

A Taxonomic Study Of Crotaphytus Collaris Between The Rio Grande And Colorado Rivers, William Ingram Iii, Wilmer W. Tanner Apr 1971

A Taxonomic Study Of Crotaphytus Collaris Between The Rio Grande And Colorado Rivers, William Ingram Iii, Wilmer W. Tanner

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

Little work has been done previously on the taxonomy of Crotaphytus collaris baileyi. This and the demonstration by Fitch and Tanner that C. c. baileyi is a heterogeneous grouping prompted the present study. Only the populations of the type material, the Upper Colorado River Basin, and the Chihuahuan Desert were studied. Multivariate, variance, canonical and discriminant analyses of external characters were performed, and pattern-coloration characters were examined on living specimens.

The results of the analyses show significance between all three populations. The discriminant functions distinguished between the populations with 80% reliability and patternal characters were discriminatory with near 100% reliability. …

This study is a taxonomic revision of Cryptantha subgenus Oreocarya (Boraginaceae), together with descriptions of species, synonyms, distribution maps, and discussions. The present treatment recognizes fifty-seven species and fourteen varieties, all separated by means of a comprehensive key, A history of the group, along with a discussion of distribution, ecology, and phylogeny is presented. As a basis for the comparison of taxa much of the research has been concentrated on morphological variation in herbarium specimens. Particular attention has been directed to a study of pubescence types, branching patterns, flowers, calyces, and fruit. The herbarium research has been correlated with extensive …

Land Use In Wah Wah And Pine Valleys, Western Utah, Joseph R. Murdock, Stanley L. Welsh Jan 1971

Land Use In Wah Wah And Pine Valleys, Western Utah, Joseph R. Murdock, Stanley L. Welsh

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

This is a review of the use of public lands in Wah Wah and Pine Valleys in western Utah for grazing of livestock, mining, and other private enterprises. The total area of the two valleys is approximately 1,440 square miles of which about 30 square miles are privately owned. From the time grazing of domestic livestock was initiated in the 1870's and 1880's until 1934, the land was free public domain and was grazed on a first-come, first-served basis. Passage of the Taylor Grazing Act in 1934 ended free use of public lands. Existing evidence indicates that by 1934 the …

Evolution Of The Iguanine Lizards (Sauria, Iguanidae) As Determined By Osteological And Myological Characters, David F. Avery, Wilmer W. Tanner Jan 1971

Evolution Of The Iguanine Lizards (Sauria, Iguanidae) As Determined By Osteological And Myological Characters, David F. Avery, Wilmer W. Tanner

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The problem of phylogenic relationships within the iguanine phyletic line and the Madagascar iguanids have been investigated in order to explain the discontinuous distribution exhibited by the members of the family Iguanidae. Owing to inconclusive results from cytology and histological methods, the comparative morphology of the anterior osteology, myology, tongues, and hemipenes were used to determine relationships.

An examination of the above structures of the members of the iguanine phyletic lines and a comparison with the Madagascar iguanids indicates the following: ( 1 ) The Madagascar genera Chalarodon and Oplurus appear to be more closely related to each other than …

History Of The South African Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1853-1970, Farrell Ray Monson Jan 1971

History Of The South African Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1853-1970, Farrell Ray Monson

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the South African Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1853-1970) describes the progress of the Church in South Africa from its inception until the present time. Missionary proselyting activities in the land are traced, and the major historical developments of the mission are discussed.

In 1853 three missionaries began Mormon proselyting activities in the Cape Province and within six months they had baptized forty-five persons, established two branches, and organized the first conference of the Church.

Despite mob violence and opposition from the clergy, civil authorities, and the press, the Church continued to …

A Study Of Rock Music To Determine Its Declared Position Relative To Unchastity, The Use Of Drugs And The Departure From Traditional Concepts Of Family And Religion, E. Lynn Balmforth Jan 1971

A Study Of Rock Music To Determine Its Declared Position Relative To Unchastity, The Use Of Drugs And The Departure From Traditional Concepts Of Family And Religion, E. Lynn Balmforth

Theses and Dissertations

One of the social phenomena of our time (1960s) has been the popularization of a kind of music among the youth known as rock 'n' roll. It was the intent of this study to determine if the medium of rock did, in fact, maintain a posture of promulgating unchastity, the use of drugs and departure from traditional concepts of family and religion.

Supported by statements from leading rock musicians it was found that the big beat had a cultural root in the Negroid race. Coupling the big beat gospel rhythms of the south with the white country and western music, …

Theses and Dissertations

It was the purpose of this study (1) to analyze the teaching methods of the L.D.S. and non-L.D.S. religious educational movements in Southeastern Utah among the Indians since 1943; and (2) to determine the similarities and differences between the teaching methods of these religious educational movements.

It was found that (1) the teaching methods used among the Indians in the earlier period of religious instruction were more typical of the culture and traditions of the Indian people than the methods used today, (2) the teaching methods most frequently used were: instructional singing, workbooks, catechization, lecture, storytelling, testimony and spiritual experiences …

History Of Utah's Salt Industry 1847-1970, John L. Clark Jan 1971

History Of Utah's Salt Industry 1847-1970, John L. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Utah salt makers have extracted salt from three sources, the principal of these being brine from Great Salt Lake. Other sources are saline beds in Great Salt Lake Desert and subterranean halite formations in central Utah.

This study traces the development of methods used to recover and refine salt by the industry, in general, and by specific companies. It provides brief, historical sketches of the major corporations and the economic, legal, and environmental factors affecting their growth.

Utah produces about 1 per cent of the nation's salt, exporting over half of it from the state. The major factors limiting the …
