Understory Characteristics Related To Site Quality For Aspen In Utah, James H. Warner, Kimball T. Harper Apr 1972

Understory Characteristics Related To Site Quality For Aspen In Utah, James H. Warner, Kimball T. Harper

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

An analysis has been made of the basic ecology of aspen forests of the mountainous areas of Utah and northern Arizona. Forty-nine study areas have been examined in respect to density, height and age of the tree cover, tree reproduction, and composition and biomass production of the understory. A graphic model of interspecific assocations among prevalent understory species has been prepared by a cluster-analysis procedure based on presence and absence of species in 1,225 small quadrats (0.25 m2) uniformly distributed among the 49 stands. The model separates species of relatively stable as opposed to rapidly seral aspen forests. …

New Synonymy In The Bark Beetle Tribe Cryphalini (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Stephen L. Wood

Great Basin Naturalist

A lectotype designated for Bostrichus asperatus Gyllenhal resulted in the clarification of the status of Cryphalus Erichson and the removal of Trypophoeus Fairmaire from synonymy. All species described by A. D. Hopkins in Hypothenemus Westwood and Stephanoderes Eichhoff were reviewed. New synonymy included: Bostrichus asperatus Gyllenhal (B. abietis Ratzeburg); H. birmanus (Eichhoff) (H. maculicollis Sharp. S. perkinsi Hopkins. S. sterculiae Hopkins. S. psidii Hopkins); B. crudiae (Panzer) (B. plumeriae Nördlinger, Cryphalus hispidulus LeConte, S. differens Hopkins, S. paraguayensis Hopkins, S. polyphagus Costa Lima, S. uniseriatus Eggers, S. hivaoea Beeson, S. lebronneci Beeson); H. californicus Hopkins (H. …

Small Rodent Populations And Biomass In Three Sagebrush Communities Of Rush Valley, Utah, David W. Nichols Feb 1972

Small Rodent Populations And Biomass In Three Sagebrush Communities Of Rush Valley, Utah, David W. Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

Three desert Artemisia tridentata communities in Rush Valley, Utah were trapped for small rodents during the summer of 1970 in a mark-recapture study. Population densities were estimated using several indices for each population category. Animals were weighed and rodent biomass calculated for each species throughout the summer. Populations, biomass, and other data were then analyzed to gain a better understanding of A. tridentata community types of the Great Basin. Peromyscus maniculatus, Eutamias minimus, and Reithrodontomys megalotis were common to area 1. Peromyscus maniculatus, E. minimus, and Perognathus parvus were common to areas 2 and 3. The peak estimated standing crops …

The Perception Of Sacred Space: The Case Of Utah And Other Sacred Places In Mormondom, Roger L. Henrie Jan 1972

The Perception Of Sacred Space: The Case Of Utah And Other Sacred Places In Mormondom, Roger L. Henrie

Theses and Dissertations

Sacred space is that part of the total environment which is perceived as sacred by individuals and religious groups. Sacred places may be conveniently divided into five generic categories: mystical, historical, and functional sacred places; and homelands, and places connected with the future fulfillment of prophecy. Sacred places of all five types are found in Mormondom. The temples, as mystical sacred places, were the most sacred. The Sacred Grove was the most sacred historical place. Utah was the most sacred present homeland. The future City of Zion, believed by many to be built in the future in Jackson County, Missouri, …

The Development Of Municipal Government In The Territory Of Utah, Alvin Charles Koritz Jan 1972

The Development Of Municipal Government In The Territory Of Utah, Alvin Charles Koritz

Theses and Dissertations

In 1846 the Mormons were expelled westward from Nauvoo, Illinois. Beyond the borders of the United States, the Mormon Church absorbed the civil functions of municipal government, a pattern which continued in the Great Basin and received the sanction of state authority in 1849 under Deseret.

As the political arm of the "Kingdom of God," the Council of Fifty influenced local political development as its members simultaneously occupied elective offices in both the territorial legislature and municipal government.

During the first decade as a territory, Utah's city charters generally followed the pattern established by Nauvoo in 1840. However, in the …

A Study Of Mormon Knowledge Of The American Far West Prior To The Exodus (1830-February, 1846), Lewis Clark Christian Jan 1972

A Study Of Mormon Knowledge Of The American Far West Prior To The Exodus (1830-February, 1846), Lewis Clark Christian

Theses and Dissertations

The American West prior to 1800 was relatively an obscure and unexplored region. However, by 1846, it had been traversed by no less than three government expeditions, and numerous mountain men and adventurers. There was an abundance of guides, maps, and books in print by 1846 for the homeseeker traveling west of the Mississippi River.

The Mormon knowledge and interest in the West began as early as 1832. Throughout the 1830's and early 1840's, as the saints moved West in the face of persecution, the Rocky Mountains were often spoken of as the future Zion of the Church. In 1842, …

Food Preferences Of The Cliff Chipmunk, Eutamias Dorsalis, In Northern Utah, E. B. Hart Sep 1971

Food Preferences Of The Cliff Chipmunk, Eutamias Dorsalis, In Northern Utah, E. B. Hart

Great Basin Naturalist

Food consumption by the cliff chipmunk, Eutamias dorsalis, was observed in northern Utah in the natural habitat during May, June, July of 1965, 1966. Plant food sources nearest the cliff den sites were used in early spring, and as the season progressed, chipmunks increased ranges proportionately with the positioning of specific maturing food plants. Total daily frequencies of plant use suggested the following plants as prime energy sources in order of observed usage: Tragopogon, Balsamorhiza, Poa, Lomatium, Bromus, Crepis, Amelanchier, Agoseris.
